| Fighting Stage 4 Bowel Cancer - How Runner Jackie Robertson was Diagnosed with No Symptoms | 28 Aug 2024 | 01:08:42 | |
The Jackie Robertson Podcast: Towards the end of 2023, just a couple of weeks after running a half marathon, the very fit and healthy Waikato mum went in for a routine blood test that changed her life. Jackie was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer that had also metastasized into her liver. For Jackie, who had zero symptoms, this news was extra tough because she is also the mother of a non-verbal son on the autism spectrum. This is Jackie Robertson's story. It’s not pretty…but it is powerful and inspiring. Thanks so much to the incredible team at ANZ for supporting this episode. ANZ has been proud partners of the cancer society for 34 years now. | Michaela Blyde on Winning Gold in Paris, Meeting her Idol, Overcoming Bullying & Body Image Issues | 25 Aug 2024 | 01:58:17
Michaela Blyde has just recently returned from the Olympics in Paris where she won her second gold medal, playing Rugby Sevens for the Black Ferns I think this will go down as one of my favorite episodes of all time- just because of her attitude, energy, enthusiasm and authenticity. And just because she’s bloody hilarious and fun to be around. We talk a lot about her recent Olympic experience, including being drug tested immediately after winning gold and going viral after meeting her sporting idol, the legendary Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (it's a great story- doesn’t get more Kiwi than this) We also talk about her upcoming wedding to another Gold medalist, her children’s book, body image, the challenges and rewards of elite training, goal setting, manifestation, journaling and so much more. Michaela is the real deal- a role model on and off the field. This episode is jam packed with cool lessons and stories. | Dame Lisa Carrington - Will the Paris 2024 Olympics Be Her Last? Managing Self Doubt & More! | 24 Jul 2024 | 01:22:24
Dame Lisa Carrington is the Greatest NZ Olympian of all time- 5 gold medals and 1 bronze medal over the past 3 Olympic Games. And maybe she will add to that at the Paris Olympic Games. This podcast is a re-release. It first came out at the start of 2023. I decided to rerelease it in time for the Paris Olympics because it was such a cool conversation. Also, the podcast has grown so much since it came out I thought there would be a lot of new listeners who are unaware Lisa has even been a guest. This is such a cool conversation. We see Lisa on TV, usually smiling on the podium with a gold medal around her neck followed by a 30-second sound bite on the news. But I have never heard Lisa be this candid before. Ever. This is a true look into the mind of a world-class athlete. You’ll get to know her strengths, weaknesses, flaws, fears, insecurities, and everything in between. There are so many cool lessons and insights in this conversation: The challenges female athletes face, such as maintaining balance between a demanding sports career and personal life ambitions. Lisa opens up about the rigorous discipline required in her everyday life to be so good for so long. We explore her early beginnings in Surf Life Saving, the crucial role played by her mentor Ian Ferguson, and the sacrifices required to train at an Olympic level from a young age. Her reflections on body image and the scrutiny of being visibly muscular. Then we chat about the Paris Olympics- will these Games be the last time we see Lisa Carrington compete at this level? This episode is packed with valuable lessons for anyone- whether you want some tips to make your own life better or just learn more about a Kiwi icon. .

| Jono Ridler (NZ record holder for longest open water swim) | 10 May 2023 | 01:01:11 | |
Just 4 days before recording this podcast, Jono Ridler had SMASHED the New Zealand open water swim distance record when he swam 99 kilometers (previous record was 80km) His 33 hour non-stop swim without a wetsuit started on a fine Tuesday morning and finished on a very story Wednesday night. I really hope you guys like this chat. Jono is not a big name guest…he’s just a regular guy who has done something incredible and inspiring. Actually, to give you an idea of just how regular he is, after finishing this 99km swim on Wednesday night he spent Thursday in Hospital then was back at work on Friday! . I absolutely love that- ordinary people doing extraordinary things There are lots of lessons in here about staying positive and not giving up when things get hard. Even some techniques that any of us can use to achieve greatness in our own lives, whatever your goal is. Thanks very much to my mates at Radix nutrition for sponsoring this episode. | Campbell Johnstone: First openly gay All Black. | 07 May 2023 | 01:13:41
Campbell Johnstone made a name for himself in NZ rugby circles as an All Black and Canterbury Crusaders rugby star in the early 2000's, He made a name for himself internationally in early 2023 when he became the first ever openly gay all black. This is his story. This is as they say in rugby, a podcast of two halves- the first half zooms in on his sexuality and the second half looks back on his rugby career which included three super rugby titles. We chat about his decision to do the interview on Seven Sharp with Hilary Barry, growing up gay and his earliest sexual experiences, coming out to his parents, dabbling with the Grindr dating app and much more. Then we look back on his rugby career- his thoughts on Razor Robertson as a coach, the hilarious reaction from his dad when he told him he was an All Black, his awkward haka experiences and more. I really enjoyed Campbells company and I hope you guys love this conversation and get something from it. Thanks very much to the absolute legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. I start every day with their protein powder mixed with ice cubes and a bit of trim milk. If you are not using protein powder- you should give it a go. Its not just for weightlifters…its useful for anyone who wants to hang on to the muscles you already have (which is so important, especially as you get older). | Billy Evans (Boston police commissioner) | 30 Apr 2023 | 01:04:16
William "Billy" Evans. It was an absolute honor and a privilege to spend an hour with Billy Evans in Boston, just 2 days after the 2023 Boston marathon (which he ran with his two sons). Ten years ago, Billy ran the Boston marathon, then shortly after finishing, he and his entire Boston police force had to get to work to try and find out who was responsible for the two bombs that went off near the finish line of the marathon. If you have seen the Netflix documentary series, “American Manhunt: The Boston marathon bombing” you will be familiar with Billy. He is the first face you see in episode one. He is also the person responsible for capturing one of the two bombers alive after he called for a ceasefire after an intense shoot-out on a boat. Billy has lived in Boston his whole life and spent his entire adult life in law enforcement. He is a passionate runner, husband, dad, and Bostonian. And I could not believe my luck when he kindly agreed to sit down with me while I was in his city. In our hour we talk about his relationship with running, his upbringing and losing both his parents at a young age, his decades as a cop in Boston then the Boston bombing, a case that defined his career. Thanks very much to my mates at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. These guys are doing incredible work with their small team from their big factory in Waikato. And it’s an honor to have a front row seat as they take on the world: They do a whole range of exceptional products- I start the day with a protein shake using their powder (usually banana or coconut). | Suzy Cato | 23 Apr 2023 | 01:19:20
SUZY CATO. I think for the most part Suzy is a New Zealander who needs no introduction. Chances are if you are in your 20s or 30s now, she was a big part of your childhood (she is the undisputed queen of children’s TV in Aotearoa). In this episode, I had the pleasure of diving deep into her life and career. We explored her beginnings in radio, her transition to TV, and how she met her husband, Steve. We also discussed Susie's experiences dealing with the heartbreak of losing a baby and being let go from TV3, as well as how she bounced back from those terrible experiences. We talked about Susie's relationship with exercise and her childhood growing up in Kaikohe. We touched on Suzy’s personal experiences with prioritizing mental health, coping with grief and navigating career changes. We also discussed her stints on reality TV with Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer. She is such fun company and I really hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks to the legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. These guys are doing BIG things from their factory in the Waikato and I feel genuinely fortunate to be associated with them- great people doing great things: Hosted on Acast. Mike Rudling is the founder and CEO of Radix Nutrition (who are the sponsors of this podcast). The team at Radix Nutrition asked if I would consider having Mike on as a guest and I didn’t hesitate to say yes. We discuss the origins of this company which he started in the Bay of Islands 10 years ago when he was 23. We dive into Mike's childhood in England and his experiences with dyslexia and boarding school. We also explore his transition from competitive swimming to cyclist and the mental health challenges Mike faced after being forced to give up on his dream of professional sports. This "Bite size" episode comes from my full conversation with Mitch James. The purpose of these is that you may give it a listen, decide you want to hear more, then go back and check out the full episode. I'd be curious to know if this ever works or not LOL. It just seemed like a smart idea in my head. This episode with Mitch was incredibly special to me. Mitch was the very first guest on this podcast when it launched a year ago. Since then, a lot has changed for both of us so I wanted to get him back for a catch up episode. Some of you may have heard that very first episode. I’m guessing most of you guys haven’t heard it. But either way, This WAS NOT a recap episode. We cover completely new stuff. Including a track-by-track deconstruction of Mitch’s recent album, Patience. Thanks very much to the legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. | Rich Farrell (NZ Strongman and depression survivor) | 06 Apr 2023 | 00:46:44
Rich Farrell!! I suspect you have not heard the name before. Rich isn’t famous, but he is one of the physically strongest men in New Zealand. Using his stage name “the madness” he goes to competitions and lifts boulders and logs, flips big tractor tyre's, those sorts of things. He went through a lot of ups and downs before finding himself and then finding this sport that gave him focus and purpose. He has never told his full story publicly before, so I thank him for the opportunity. He only wants to share his journey in the hope that it can help some other people. This chat needs to come with a trigger warning. It does contain chat about depression and suicide. Thanks very much to the legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. | Sir Ashley Bloomfield | 02 Apr 2023 | 01:12:43
Sir Ashley Bloomfield was the director general of health when Covid-19 came to New Zealand early in 2020. He became one of the most recognizable faces and names in New Zealand for his daily 1pm briefings with the PM which because essential viewing. We sat down for this podcast conversation on the 3rd anniversary of New Zealand’s initial Covid lockdown. He turned up to my place on a bike (not one with a battery either, full old school bike) wearing a correctly fixed helmet, of course. We chat about his marathon running experiences and why he is taking a break from mountain biking for a while. His early life growing up and meeting his wife Libby at medical school. The anxiety of facing the media at 1pm every day and the terror of doing radio interviews with Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB. His relationship with Jacinda Ardern during the pandemic and their relationship now The viral "spread your legs" moment. His Knighthood and much more. We had limited time so there was a lot of stuff I would have liked to cover that we didn’t get round to. But I can’t thank Dr Bloomfield enough for being so generous with his time, experience and stories. I loved his company and our chat- he came in with really good energy. I genuinely hope you guys like it too. Thanks to my friends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. If you haven’t tried their stuff, you should give them a go:

| Bite size: Rachel Hunter reflects on her break up with Rod Stewart | 30 Mar 2023 | 00:06:44 | |
Rachel Hunter was a secondary school student in Auckland when she was "discovered" by a photographer as she ran along an Auckland beach. She soon became one of the world’s most in demand models, earning a reputation only a handful of people had as a “super model.“
In this "bite size" clip taken from our full conversation, Rachel and I speak openly about her ex-husband and the father of her children, Rod Stewart, She reveals why she has never read the parts about herself in his book and reflects on that moment she told him the relationship wasn't going to last and her feeling about him now. Even though they broke up over 20 years ago, I know this is a tough subject so I can't thank Rachel enough for going back there and reflecting. If you like this bite size podcast, please go and listen to the whole conversation when you have time. It was a very enjoyable one to do. | ZANE ROBERTSON- A worldwide exclusive interview | 27 Mar 2023 | 00:42:55
On Tuesday March 22, it was announced that NZ distance runner, Zane Robertson had received a seven-year ban for failing a drug test. Four years was for taking the banned substance EPO, an additional three years was for trying to cover up his failed test. At the age of 33, this likely spells the end of his professional career. Zane and I connected to have this conversation the morning after, Thursday March 23. In this podcast, a tired and understandably emotional Zane talked openly and frankly about the announcement and the events leading up to it. Rachel Hunter was a secondary school student in Auckland when she was "discovered" by a photographer. She soon became one of the world’s most in demand models, earning a reputation only a handful of people had of people had as a “super model.“ So, what business does she have being on a podcast called Runners only? Glad you asked! She literally was out running when she was “discovered.” This conversation was so enjoyable. We cover a lot of ground including the moment she quit school to become a model- great story…it involves a phone call to the school office landline while she was mid math’s exam. Her reflections on Andy Hayden and how she got a gruff ex All Black to be her manager (Spoiler: it was a lot harder than you'd think). We chat about the iconic Trumpet ad, posing for Playboy and staring in the iconic Stacie’s mom music video. Why she has never read the chapter about herself in the Rod Stewart autobiography. We talk about Rod a lot…probably way more than she was comfortable with- sorry Rach!! LOL The death of her mum, becoming a grandmother, menopause and much much more. Mitch James is a well known New Zealand singer. He is also a marathon runner. But he is so much more than those things. He is one of the most authentic, vulnerable and transparent people I have ever met. A true open book. 100% BS free. There are some serious things we touch upon- including mental health and suicide. And I respect Mitch for his honesty. Warning- He DOES like to swear...so keep that in mind if you are with little kids or anyone who is easily shocked. PS: Mitch has a new song called "History" coming out later this week. Look out for it. It's probably awesome. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In the 90’s and early 2000s, Adam Parore was a star of the NZ cricket team. Then he could be seen on the cover of Women’s Day every other week. Over a decade ago he went to ground and there has been very little written about him in the public domain ever since. This conversation is sort of in three different chapters: The cricket career, including being mentored by his mate Martin Crowe. Climbing Mount Everest….and almost dying the day before he made it to the summit. Why he removed himself from the public eye, his loves and losses and the toll that’s played on his mental health and a bunch of other really special stuff that I loved and I hope you do too. This "Bite size" podcast is an except taken from my full conversation with Dai Henwood. The hope is that, perhaps, after listening to this you may deicide to download and listen to the full episode with Dai at a later date when you have more time on your hands. Dai has been a part of the local comedy and TV scene for over 20 years. Starting as a stand up comedian he ended up as one of the team captains on 7Days, a role he held for over a decade. More recently he has hosted big mainstream TV shows like Family Feud, DWTS and LegoMasters. In late January 2023 he announced publicly that he had been living with cancer for 3 years. Since then his treatment has included fourteen rounds of chemotherapy, high-dose radiation, three lung surgeries and having parts of his liver and bowel removed. But after the cancer spread to his lungs and lymph nodes, his oncologist told him the cancer was incurable. In this snippet, Dai and I discuss his biggest fears and regrets in life. Thanks very much to Radix Nutrition for making this episode possible. Made in the Waikato and shipped anywhere in the world. Their protein powders are incredible. | Bite size: Dean Lonergan on his "rock bottom" moment in life | 02 Mar 2023 | 00:07:36
This "bite size" podcast episode is a portion taken from my full conversation with Dean Lonergan. The idea of these smaller podcasts is that, if you like what you hear, you may go on to bookmark/download/listen to the full conversation. Also, I know we all have limited time, but everyone can find 7 minutes to listen to a podcast. Dean Lonergan was a Kiwi rugby league player in the late 80s and early 90s. He is reluctantly most remembered for a sickening head clash where he was knocked out cold and convulsing on the field…before returning to play on only 6 minutes later. Since retiring from sport, he had a very successful career in breakfast radio before reinventing himself once again and becoming New Zealand’s most well known sports promotors, introducing the fight for life concept to NZ. | A Helmet Saved His Life - Sam Clarke was Shot in the Head During 2023 Auckland Shooting | 17 Jul 2024 | 01:21:02
SAM CLARKE On the morning of July 20th 2023, New Zealand was shocked by a shooting at Commercial Bay in Auckland’s CBD. A man on electronically monitored bail took a gun to the construction site where he was working. He killed two colleagues with a shotgun, wounded seven other people, including a police officer, and then killed himself. Sam Clarke, a husband and father, was shot that day. But he is not included in that list of victims. Sam was working his dream job as a member of the NZ police Armed Offenders Squad when he was hit in the helmet by a bullet from the gunman. It was a job he loved, but a job he had to turn his back on because it nearly cost him his life. This is part of his story. In vivid detail he talks about the morning of July 20 and how it played out from the perspective of an on-duty cop. Dealing with a concussion and struggling to reassure his loved ones, he was ok in the immediate aftermath. The comprehensive support provided by the police force, including psychological and medical help. The emotional and physical toll the incident took on him. And the transformative power of therapy and vulnerability. Some of Sam's personal experiences about overcoming anxiety, dealing with flashbacks and much more. It’s the first time Sam has done anything like this, and I can’t thank him enough for his courage in being so open and vulnerable with sharing his experience. Follow Sam's new business, Response Rise: He is using the skills he learned in the Police to teach others what to do in armed offender incidents, confrontational situations, retail crime and more. | Episode 55: David Seymour (ACT party leader) | 29 Jan 2023 | 01:39:30
David Seymour is probably most famous for two things- being the leader of the Act party for almost a decade. And twerking in lycra on DWTS! We talk about his relationship with other politicians including Jacinda Ardern and Winston Peters. We talk about the death of his mum to cancer in his early 20 and why he has never watched the DVD she made for him in her final weeks, his whole DWTS experience, all the strange little moments he has gone viral for, his relationship with alcohol and how drunk was he really at the last election night? I understand politics is a murky area. So polarising. But I genuinely care what you guys think so please let me know. Are you keen to hear more from any of the people who run our country? | Teuila Blakely on Shortland Street, Snapchat Scandal, Relationship with Oscar Kightley & More! | 14 Jul 2024 | 01:36:57
Teuila Blakely is a total bad-ass and this was such a treat. You may know her from her work on the old music channel C4, or Shortland Street, Bro-Town, Sione's Wedding or even DWTS or a zillion other things. But this is less about her career and more about her journey- some pivotal moments that have shaped her personal and professional life. From the challenges of being raised by a very tough mum, to then becoming a teenage solo-mum, humiliating experiences with racism, her beautiful friendship with her ex-fiancé Oscar Kightely, how she went from McDonalds to movies and so much more. Including THAT snap-chat incident. Teuila is a genuine trailblazer, and it was an honor to have her share some of the less glamourous aspects of her life. She is as authentic as it gets and an open book.

| Episode 54: Dame Lisa Carrington | 22 Jan 2023 | 01:22:33 | |
Dame Lisa Carrington is possibly the most esteemed guest on the podcast so far. Not only the very first Dame but also the greatest NZ Olympian of all time with 5 gold medals and hundreds of other accolades to her name. I always thought she was a good role model. Now I know for certain that she is! Thanks to my friends at Radix Nutrition for getting in behind this episode. Shane Cameron is one of New Zealands best known boxers. He is now a sucessful businessman. Shane and I sat down for this podcast way back in January. Long before the podcast “Runners Only!” even launched. Being on the cusp of being an actual boomer, I lost this entire audio file and some others…or so I thought. They turned up the other day on an SD card (long born story). Shane’s a good dude and I forgot how enjoyable our conversation was. We talk in depth about the “fight of the century” against David Tua (and how long it took him to recover mentally from the beating), Dancing with the stars, life before and after boxing, the Commonwealth games, and heaps more. This “bite size” podcast episode comes from my full conversation with Rachel Maia. If you like this snippet, feel free to listen to her whole remarkable story when you have a spare hour. Rach is mum of three from Whanganui. She is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. Hell of a story. She only got the leg amputated 3 years ago after sucking up a lifetime of pain from a climbing wall injury she suffered in her teens. In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee. | Episode 50: Rachel Maia | 11 Dec 2022 | 01:14:07
Rachel Maia from Whanganui is total bad-ass. But just DON’T call her “Inspirational.” (She explains why during our conversation). As well as being a mum to three kids, Rachel is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. What makes this even more remarkable is the backstory. When she was 16, Rachel had a freak fall from a reasonably small height at an indoor climbing wall and broke both her ankles. Then years later as an adult she decided to return to the spot she loves…even though it had, in many ways, ruined her life. In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee. It’s a hell of a journey and I really hope you guys like it. Rachel Maia is a woman on a mission to remind each and every one of us that we all have unlimited potential. Need to warn you, there were a couple of sound and microphone issues with this episode. I’m so sorry about that. If you are listening with earplugs in it may not be too annoying (hopefully) but yeah, its an incredible story so I hope Rach's story is bigger than the technical difficulties. Dom

Speaking to media at the time about her sons passing, Kendras sister Nic said: “He was just one of a kind. He was so loveable, so witty. Life without him is going to be dim. We still are broken, and we will be for a long time. I’m dreading the rest of my life to be fair.” In this poignant bite size clip taken from our full conversation, Kendra reflects on Jordy and how she managed her own grief while being stuck in MIQ, away from her family. Kendra Cocksedge was part of the Black Ferns team who just recently won the Rugby World cup in front of a packed Eden Park crowd. That final was her very last game after 15 years in the team. That win put the bow on what has been a mindblowing career: 15 years in the NZ Black Ferns. 2015 world player of the year. And in 2018 the first woman to ever win the Player of the Year at the NZ rugby awards. When I caught up with Kendra I offered her transport to my place. She declined and said she could make her own way there….then she turned up on a lime scooter. I really enjoyed getting to pick her brains and find out what makes her tick and I hope you guys do as well. Dom
