Who’s Protecting Your Dog? 30 Sep 202600:20:42

In this episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, I examine the shocking animal-cruelty case involving a Connecticut woman accused of repeatedly using a shock collar on a caged dog. I also discuss the USDA’s newly announced plans to strengthen oversight of federally regulated dog breeders—and what those protections do and do not guarantee.

Finally, I explain how to find a truly evidence-based dog trainer, what professional credentials actually mean, and why owners should investigate a trainer’s methods before placing a dog in their care.

The Connecticut case remains pending, and the allegations have not resulted in a conviction.

Follow Dog Gone Positive Training for evidence-based training advice, industry news, and honest conversations about dog welfare.

Balanced Training & Shock Collars: What Are We Really Teaching?23 Sep 202600:22:01

In this episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, I’m reviewing a training short from a balanced dog-training company that uses a shock collar as part of its training approach.

We’ll break down what’s happening in the video, why the dog’s behavior may look like “success,” and what we need to consider when punishment or discomfort is being used to change behavior.

Does a dog complying mean the dog understands what we want? What is the shock collar actually teaching? And could we accomplish the same training goal without using an aversive tool?

I’ll walk through what I see as a positive reinforcement dog trainer and explain why how we get the behavior matters just as much as the behavior itself.

When Are You Ready for Another Dog? | Peggy Frezon, Part 516 Sep 202600:17:54

In the final part of my conversation with Peggy Frezon, author of Goodbye to a Good Dog, we discuss a deeply personal question many people face after losing a beloved pet: Should I get another dog—and how will I know when I’m ready?

There is no correct timeline and no single answer. Some people welcome another dog quickly, while others need more time or decide not to adopt again. A new dog can never replace the one you lost, but when the time feels right, they can open your heart to a new and entirely different relationship.

A heartfelt thank-you to Peggy for sharing her wisdom, faith, personal experiences, and compassion throughout this five-part series.

Saying Goodbye with Love: Knowing When the Time Is Right | Peggy Frezon, Part 302 Sep 202600:10:16

In Part 3 of my conversation with Peggy Frezon, author of Goodbye to a Good Dog, we discuss one of the most painful decisions a pet owner may ever face: knowing when it is time to say goodbye.

How can you tell whether your dog still has a good quality of life? Are the difficult days beginning to outnumber the good ones? We talk about recognizing changes in comfort, mobility, appetite, enjoyment, and everyday activities—and why you should not have to make this decision alone.

Your veterinarian can help you understand your pet’s condition, discuss available options, and work with you as a team. Although no one can remove the heartbreak, having honest conversations and reliable information can help you make a loving, informed decision based on your pet’s needs.

Wheelchair Repair Nightmare Part 2: They Said It Was Fixed28 Aug 202600:11:14

My wheelchair repair nightmare continues. In Part 2, I took my chair to another medical equipment specialist who told me the problem was fixed. Unfortunately, it wasn't.

When Grief Begins Before Goodbye: Anticipatory Grief and Pet Loss | Peggy Frezon, Part 226 Aug 202600:09:42

In Part 2 of my conversation with Peggy Frezon, author of Goodbye to a Good Dog: Healing, Comfort, and the Hope of Heaven After the Loss of Your Pet, we have an honest discussion about anticipatory grief—the sadness and fear that can begin while a beloved pet is still with us.

We also explore the many different ways people experience grief. Some people openly express their emotions, while others are quieter or more stoic. There is no single “right” way to grieve, no required timeline, and no measure of how deeply someone loved based on how their grief appears to others.

We also address the painful judgment pet owners sometimes face from people who say, “It was just a dog,” “It was just a cat,” or “You should be over it by now.” The loss of a pet can be every bit as real and devastating as losing any other member of the family. Grieving pet owners deserve compassion, understanding, and the freedom to process their loss in their own way.

Why Senior Dogs Are Worth the Heartache | Goodbye to a Good Dog with Peggy Frezon – Part 120 Aug 202600:19:17

In Part 1 of my conversation with author Peggy Frezon, we discuss her new book, Goodbye to a Good Dog: Healing, Comfort, and the Hope of Heaven After the Loss of Your Pet.

Peggy shares how she and her husband began rescuing senior dogs, why these often-overlooked dogs deserve loving homes, and what they have taught her about love, loss, and saying goodbye. Although adopting a senior dog may mean having less time together—and eventually experiencing tremendous grief—Peggy explains why the love, joy, and companionship make it worth the pain.

36 Border Collies Rescued: How Did This Go On for Years?13 Aug 202600:14:10

A Palm City, Florida, woman is facing 72 charges after 36 Border Collies were rescued from horrifying living conditions. Authorities say the dogs were confined inside a home filled with feces, urine and debris—and reports indicate that Animal Services had responded to concerns at the property numerous times since 2020.

In this short episode, I discuss the suffering these dogs endured, the difficult connection between animal hoarding and mental health, and the question many people are asking: How was this allowed to continue for so long?

The dogs are now receiving care through the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, but their physical and emotional recovery is only beginning.

SPECIAL EPISODE: Catastrophic Wheelchair Repair Took My Independence11 Aug 202600:19:39

This week's episode is different. I'm stepping away from dog training to share something very personal that's happening to me right now.

This documents my experience with @DMEofAmerica and what has happened since my wheelchair repair was attempted.

What was supposed to be a routine repair to my rigid manual wheelchair has turned into a nightmare that has completely disrupted my independence.

Last week, I brought my wheelchair in to have the front caster forks and bearings replaced. During the attempted repair, one of the forks was bent and the chair was damaged. My wheelchair is now sitting without its front forks or casters and is completely unusable.

Since Wednesday, I have been relying on a transport chair that does not meet my mobility needs. This isn't simply uncomfortable or inconvenient. I cannot independently put the brakes on. I can't properly reach my sink to wash my hands or dishes. Cooking and using the microwave have become difficult or impossible. I can't go outside with my dogs the way I normally do. My body is hurting from spending days in a chair that was never designed to replace my everyday wheelchair.

A replacement loaner was supposed to be brought to me Friday. I provided my measurements, but the chair that arrived was too large and had to be sent back. I then went through the entire weekend in the transport chair.

This video documents what has happened, the condition of my wheelchair, and what it actually means when a disabled person's primary mobility equipment is taken out of service.

A wheelchair isn't just a piece of equipment. Mine is what allows me to move through my home, take care of myself, go outside with my dogs, and live my life with independence.

I am sharing this because what has happened should not be considered acceptable treatment of anyone who depends on mobility equipment.

Balance Training Part 4: Is It Animal Abuse? Science, Ethics & Better Alternatives05 Aug 202600:22:13

n Part 4 of my Balance Training series, I explore one of the most controversial questions in dog training: Is balance training animal abuse? We discuss why some trainers believe positive reinforcement is only effective for puppies, what the science tells us about training adult dogs, and how simple tools like a clicker can help capture and reinforce the behaviors you want—without using fear, pain, or intimidation.

I also cover Florida's new law requiring veterinarians to inform clients that they have the freedom to fill prescriptions through their veterinarian or the pharmacy of their choice.

In Part 3 of my Balance Training series, I take a closer look at what pet owners should consider before hiring a dog trainer. Balance Training & Animal Welfare – Part 2: Trust Over Fear23 Jul 202600:27:03

What does it really mean to build a strong relationship with your dog? In Part 2 of this series, I dive deeper into why trust, communication, and positive reinforcement create more reliable behaviors than fear or intimidation ever can.

We take a closer look at aversive training tools, including shock collars, prong (pinch) collars, and choke chains, and discuss how these methods can damage the bond between dogs and their people while affecting both learning and welfare.

I also discuss the heartbreaking story surrounding Ridglan Farms and the rescue of thousands of beagles bred for laboratory research. We follow the funding trail, exploring how taxpayer-funded grants and the USDA intersect with commercial breeding operations that supply animals for research, and what "animal welfare" really means in these situations.

Whether you're a pet parent, trainer, or simply someone who cares about animals, this episode encourages you to think critically about the choices we make for the animals in our lives and how those choices shape their physical and emotional well-being.

If you enjoyed this episode, please follow the podcast, leave a review, and share it with someone who wants to build a better relationship with their dog.

Balance Training for Dogs: What Every Pet Parent Should Know (Part 1)16 Jul 202600:24:37

What exactly is "balanced" dog training, and what does that term really mean?

In Part 1 of this series, I take a closer look at balanced training, punishment, and the potential impact aversive training methods can have on the relationship between you and your dog. We discuss how trust can be affected when punishment is used, why this can create liability and safety concerns, and why it's important to understand the long-term effects of the training methods you choose.

I also share my personal experience using a shock collar on one of my own dogs many years ago, what I learned from that experience, and why my approach to training changed. We talk about why punishment is often not the most effective way to teach behavior and I reference research that has shaped modern, reward-based training.

This is just the beginning. There is far too much information to cover in a single episode, so this is Part 1 of a series exploring the science, ethics, and practical realities of balanced training.

Whether you're a new puppy owner or have shared your life with dogs for years, this episode will help you make more informed decisions about the methods you choose and the relationship you want to build with your dog.

🐾 In Part 2 of this dog nutrition series, I'm sharing my real-life experience transitioning my dogs to fresh food and some of the challenges we encountered along the way.

In this episode, I sit down with Lantz Tucker’s mom, Crystal, and discuss how you can help Pawsitive Tails, a 501 (c) (3) foster and adoption organization, and how her son Lantz asked one question that changed everything for this rescue group. We talk about how her son Lantz, lost his life and was poisoned and murdered by one choice. Crystal talks about how ONE PILL changed everything and the need for four people to talk about it. This is not addiction. It is about getting this important life-saving information to everyone. Please check out the links below for the Lantz Tucker Memorial Fund to learn more and to help pets in dire need. At Pawsitive Tails, Crystal and all of her volunteers dedicate their lives and homes to care for these unwanted pets. This is a full-time job that requires expertise and dedication from a team working toward a common goal! Save as many unwanted pets' lives as possible, and find them loving homes forever. But that takes help from you and from me. This episode talks about how you can donate and what you can donate to Pawsitive Tails. Check out their Amazon WISHLIST too! What If It Were Your Dog?25 Mar 202600:11:39

In this episode, I sit down with Lantz Tucker’s mom, Crystal, and discuss how you can help Pawsitive Tails, a 501c3 Foster and adoption organization that rescues pregnant moms, goes through the birthing process, in addition to all the veterinary care, massive amount of cleaning, and raising of the litters, socialize them to other pets, people, children, great trains, and begins if not, fully completes house training, no matter how small or large, and of course Pawsitive Tails, rescue daddy's too so they are not euthanized. These pregnant moms are going to be euthanized the minute they go into local shelters because of a lack of resources and volunteers. Pawsitive Tails, Crystal, and all of her volunteers dedicate their lives and homes to care for these unwanted pets. This is a full-time job that requires expertise and dedication from a team working toward a common goal! Save as many unwanted pets' lives as possible, and find them loving homes forever. Dogs & Cats Need Your Help!!18 Mar 202600:10:43

Some stories are hard to tell… but important to share.

In this episode, I sit down with Lantz Tucker’s mom, Crystal, and discuss how to apply for help with your pet if you cannot afford a veterinarian bill for their care. Also, do you fall through the cracks? Not anymore! The Lantz Tucker Memorial Fund does not discriminate against people who make slightly too much to qualify for other grants at shelters or other organizations.

Crystal shares the story of the first pet that The Lantz Tucker Memorial Fund was able to help and the kismet of a rose tattoo ❤️

The Lantz Tucker Memorial Fund was created because of one simple but powerful question Lantz  asked: “Why not?”Why can’t pet parents get help when they can’t afford veterinary care? Why should an animal suffer because someone doesn’t have enough money? Why should pet owners have to surrender their pets because they can't afford an expensive treatment? Please help and donate today to a worthy 501(c) (3) organization where 100% of the funds go to the care of people's pets.

Lantz may no longer be with us, but his compassion continues to change lives—both human and animal. ❤️

How One Question Started Helping Pets in Need11 Mar 202600:16:30

Some stories are hard to tell… but important to share.

In this episode, I sit down with Lantz Tucker’s mom, Crystal, to talk about the life of her son and the love that continues to carry his legacy forward.

The Lantz Tucker Memorial Fund was created because of one simple but powerful question Lantz  asked: “Why not?”
Why can’t pet parents get help when they can’t afford veterinary care? Why should an animal suffer because someone doesn’t have enough money? Why should pet owners have to surrender their pets because they can't afford an expensive treatment?

That question stayed with his mom—and today, because of that conversation she had with Lantz, this fund helps pet parents who just need a little help to save their animals.

Lantz may no longer be with us, but his compassion continues to change lives—both human and animal. ❤️

In today’s episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, we dive into what it truly takes to run a successful show and how meaningful it is to have a loyal audience that supports the information Jon shares week after week — whether they’re tuning in to listen or calling in with a question for one of Jon's expert guests.

Jon, a longtime friend and the incredible host of Talkin’ Pets, joins me for an engaging conversation about animal cruelty laws and the impact the current administration has had on environmental and endangered animal protections — many of which have been rolled back.

It’s an honest, behind-the-scenes discussion you won’t want to miss.

Puppy Culture: What Every Puppy Raiser, Foster, & Breeder Must Do!21 Jan 202600:20:00

In this episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, with Chrissy from @pittiehoarder, we go deeper into the fascinating world and the skills puppies should and need to learn before they ever meet their human families. We discuss how early, positive exposure to touch prevents future behavioral issues and why reading body language is the foundation of a trust-based relationship. The simple exercises to help prepare your puppy for a lifetime of nail trims, ear cleanings, grooming, veterinary visits, and everyday handling exercises are paramount to having a better-behaved dog. Socialization with all people, in all situations, can save your pets and you a lifetime of stress and anxiety. Crate training is vital, and being around and socializing with other pets is vital, too. The Silent Language of the Den 14 Jan 202600:19:47

What Humans Can’t Teach: Lessons from Mom

We often think of ourselves as the primary teachers for our puppies. We teach them "sit," "stay," and "fetch." But there is a hidden curriculum that only another dog can deliver—lessons in social etiquette, emotional regulation, and the "rules of being a dog" that no human can replicate.

In this episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, with Chrissy from @pittiehoarder, we’re diving into the fascinating world of maternal canine instinct and the vital skills puppies learn before they ever meet their human families.

The Mom-Only Curriculum:

 * The "Bite Inhibition" Masterclass: When a puppy plays too roughly, Mom doesn't give a lecture. She uses a specific correction—a growl or a physical nudge—that teaches the puppy exactly where the line is.

 * The Art of "Doggy Zen": Mother dogs are masters of ignoring attention-seeking behavior. By not reacting to every whine, she teaches her pups the vital skill of self-soothing and patience. This is something humans need to do for unwanted behaviors, like demand barking or whining in a crate.

 * Body Language Fluency: From the subtle flick of an ear to the tension in a tail, puppies learn the nuances of canine communication by watching and reacting to their mother’s non-verbal cues.

 * The Boundaries of Respect: She shows them when it’s time to play and, more importantly, when it’s time to be still and respectful of others' space.

Why This Matters for You

Understanding what your dog learned in those first eight weeks can change how you train and bond with them today. It helps us realize that sometimes, we aren't "fixing" a behavior—we're just trying to translate a lesson they've already started learning.

🎧 Listen now wherever you listen to podcasts.

Let’s Discuss: What’s one "quirk" your dog has that you’re convinced they learned from their mama? Let us know in the comments! 👇

What does body language have to do with my dog's thyroid?07 Jan 202600:14:43

In this episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, I have a great discussion with Chrissy from @pittiehoarder for a second time to discuss body language. She talks about how her dog Hunk's behavior started to change slowly, and he wasn't enjoying going for a ride anymore. He also gained weight and had patches of missing hair. After changing veterinarians and getting a tip from one of her followers, she asked about hypothyroidism. After some bloodwork, she found that he indeed had low thyroid production. Can Furlanthropy Raise Funds For Dog Training?31 Dec 202500:26:51

In this episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, I continue my conversation with Adam Spencer, CFRE, founder of Furlanthropy. I shared with Adam my idea to start a 501(c)(3) for dog training. I want dog training to be accessible to everybody. Adam had a wonderful idea and informed me that I could start a fundraiser for dog training on Furlanthropy's site! How Can You Help Your Veterinarian & Staff With Compassion Fatigue?25 Dec 202500:10:43

Compassion Care for Those Who Care for Our Pets

In this emotional episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, I continue my conversation with Adam Spencer, CFRE, founder of Furlanthropy, to confront one of the most common crises in veterinary medicine today: Compassion Fatigue. The life-saving care and the emotional support veterinarians, veterinarian technicians, assistants, and front desk staff give their clients takes a toll. Veterinarians are 2-3 times more likely to die by suicide as compared to other professionals.

We go to a veterinary office with a healthy pet for a routine checkup, or our pet in crisis who needs immediate care. In those moments, we expect compassion, understanding, and expertise—for our pets and for ourselves. But how often do we stop to think about what the people on the other side of the exam table are carrying? Veterinarians, technicians, assistants, front desk, and other staff work in a profession rooted in love and empathy. Yet it comes with an emotional cost few of us fully see. Compassion fatigue, burnout, moral distress, long hours, and repeated exposure to grief take a profound toll.

When we are in crisis with our pets, it can be nearly impossible to hold space for anything else. But consider this: the veterinarian standing in front of you may have just walked out of the exam room next door after euthanizing another family’s pet—perhaps one they’ve known since puppyhood or kittenhood. And now, they must take a breath, steady themselves, and walk into your room offering calm, care, and compassion all over again.

That emotional whiplash happens multiple times a day.

What Is Compassion Fatigue?

Compassion fatigue is the emotional and physical exhaustion that comes from prolonged caregiving and repeated exposure to trauma and grief. It doesn’t mean a lack of caring—it means too much caring for too long without enough support.

How Can We Help Our Veterinarians and Their Staff?

Small acts matter more than we realize:

• Practice patience. Delays, tough news, or difficult conversations aren’t personal—they’re often the result of someone else’s emergency or loss.

• Use kind language. Stressful moments can escalate quickly. A calm tone and respectful words can make a world of difference.

• Say thank you—and mean it. A genuine “I appreciate what you do” carries weight.

• Leave positive reviews. These help morale more than you might imagine, especially after difficult days.

• Support fair care. Veterinary teams want to help every animal, but they face financial, ethical, and emotional limits.

• Acknowledge their humanity. They are professionals—but they are also people who grieve, love, and hurt.

If you’ve ever felt supported, comforted, or guided through one of the hardest moments of pet ownership, that care came at a cost to someone who chose this profession out of love.

Mental Health Resources for Veterinarians & Veterinary Staff

If you are a veterinarian, technician, or staff member—or you love someone who is—support is available:

• Not One More Vet (NOMV)

NOMV Created by Dr. Nicole MacArthur October 1, 2014, following the suicide of world-renowned veterinary behaviorist Dr. Sophia Yin.

• AVMA Wellbeing & Peer Support Resources

The American Veterinary Medical Association provides mental health tools, wellness education, & confidential peer assistance.

https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/wellbeing

• 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (U.S.)

Call or text 988 for immediate, confidential support—24/7.

International:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines

• Local Veterinary Peer Support Groups

Many state and regional veterinary associations offer confidential peer-to-peer programs.

Asking for help is not a weakness. It is a sign of strength—and survival.

Can I Use CRYPTO To Pay For My Pets Emergency Vet Bill?17 Dec 202500:20:27

What happens when saving a beloved pet’s life comes down to money?

In this bold episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, I sit down with Adam Spencer, CFRE, founder of Furlanthropy, to confront one of the most uncomfortable conversations in veterinary medicine today: the rising cost of life-saving care and the emotional toll it takes on pet parents and veterinarians. We pull back the curtain on what veterinary teams face when clients can’t afford treatment—and why this reality is breaking hearts on both sides of the exam room.

Adam also challenges the way we think about giving. What if helping animals didn’t have to look like writing a check? From donating stock to using cryptocurrency, Furlanthropy is redefining how generosity works in a modern world—and making critical care possible for families who would otherwise have no options.

This episode is a must-listen for pet lovers, animal advocates, and anyone willing to question the system—and believe compassion can still win.

In this powerful episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way,  my interview with Adam Spencer CFRE, the founder of Furlanthropy, shines a light on the impact high cost of life-saving treatments for pet parents and veterinarians.  We dive into the inspiration behind his mission to change the way pets receive lifesaving medical care. Adam shares how adopting his dog, who had been surrendered because her original family couldn’t afford treatment, opened his eyes to a heartbreaking reality faced by thousands of pet parents.

That moment sparked the idea for Furlanthropy, a 501 (c) (3) charity that brings communities together to fund crucial medical needs for pets in crisis. Adam discusses openly about the moment everything shifted, the emotional journey that followed, and why he believes no animal should lose their home—or their life—because of financial hardship.

Do You Know What Your Dog Is Communicating To You?19 Nov 202500:17:55

Join Maria in the latest episode of The Dog Gone Positive Way, where Maria shows new dog socialization with your already existing dog. Maria encourages you to record your dog, watch the video, and try to decipher what your dog's body language says. We must take all the pressure off the dogs and lower expectations to what they can handle, not what we want. It is all about our pets, not us. When we take the pressure off and stop interfering, it is actually a beautiful thing to observe and learn what our dogs' bodies are really telling us. Our dogs primarily communicate with us through their body language, and of course, with one another. Of course, there is vocalization, but even before vocalization happens, there is body language. It is hardwired into us and into animals. It is part of survival. It can be so subtle that the human can’t even detect it. She shares a video of the first week of interaction with Tony, and a newly adopted dog, Love. A tail is one part of a dog’s body that is an information highway! Ever think about what happens when the is docked or the ears are cropped? What about their ears and the rest of their body? There is so much to discover just by watching dogs interact with one another without interfering, as long as it's a safe interaction, obviously. Remember, Maria encourages people to watch videos with the volume off, which gives you a new perspective on what you are seeing when you watch dogs play or what you think might be play. Join her as she in the new series on dog body language and newly adopted pets. These are some of the many questions that are answered for you in this Body Language Series. So sit back, relax, listen, and gain some more knowledge about what your dog’s tail is actually telling you. #bodylanguage #dog #Dogbehavior  #dogtrainer  #tails #tail  #pets  #introduction  #newpet #multidog #Rehoming #Anxiety  #wags #tailwag #Socialization   #tailwagging #appeasement #dogaggression #Boundaries #Safety #ears #crop #dock #gentleleader #headcollar #dogmom #dogtraining#piloerection #tongueflick #whaleeye #communicationbreakdown
