Meet Your Dark Side - Rex Riepe, Eristics, DSPod #28112 Sep 202402:42:06

Rex Riepe is a philosopher who created the Eristics Test as a tool for helping people understand how they process emotions. In his view, emotions are a deeply rational aspect of our personalities that argue for us to take specific actions in three spheres - the self, the world, and society. We discuss the structure that he has developed for understanding the relationship between emotions, how he identified the fundamental building blocks of our interior landscapes, the way that different personalities fit together, and how unexamined emotional strategies can take on a life of their own. Transactional Quantum Mechanics - Dr. Ruth Kastner - DSPod #28008 Sep 202402:05:32

Dr. Ruth Kastner is a historian of Physics and philosopher of Science who is preoccupied with rational interpretations of quantum mechanics. She serves as the third pole of the transactional quantum mechanics big tent where she, alongside John Cramer and Carver Mead, argue that the apparent mysteries of quantum mechanics can be rationalized by modeling everything from light to gravity as an exchange between atoms. Our conversation explores how she became enamored with this alternative approach to physics, the question of how accurate our models really are when it comes to the subatomic world, why the word "electron" is hopelessly confused, and why moving backwards in space and time aren't as different as they might seem at first glance. Physics vs Mysticism - Dr. M.S. DeLay & A. V. Bendebury, DS Pod #27905 Sep 202401:53:17

We sit down for a discussion about the futility of rationalism, by way of William James' Varieties of Religious Experience. We start with the question of utopias, and try to diagnose why, if they're doomed to fail, it's still worth trying to create them, and then move on to the question of the scientific project - which seems to be an attempt to create a rationalist utopia. James' take on mystical experiences - that they're nearly universally accessible, though rarely long dwelt in - seems to suggest that there is something about the tremulous experience of being alive that will leave us with the feeling of being part of something larger than ourselves no matter how rational we get. So, then, if we can never escape the mystical experience, is it worth trying? And if it is, and we take the project of science to be worthwhile, where does the mystic live? Magic, CIA Research & ESP Abilities - Dr. Dean Radin, IONS - DSPod #27801 Sep 202402:42:19

Dr. Dean Radin is an investigator of parapsychological phenomena whose career has spanned Bell Labs, Stanford Research Institute as part of the Stargate Project, Princeton, and who is now the Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. Radin approaches his search for evidence of psychokinesis and extrasensory perception as an engineer, and has spent his career building devices that can be reproducibly (though subtly) affected by the minds of experimental subjects that have ranged from his colleagues at Bell Labs to thousands of participants from across the web. We talk about how the buttoned up engineer started studying such esoteric phenomena, working for the CIA, how there's no proof that can convince a skeptic, his recent research that suggests that mental action can affect the outcome of quantum experiments, and his radically transparent approach to research.

Push the River, It Pushes Back - Kevin Fedarko, Author - DS Pod 27729 Aug 202401:57:08

Kevin Fedarko is a writer, journalist and river guide explores the interface between wilderness and industrialization, most recently through the lens of the Grand Canyon. Fedarko recently published "A Walk In the Park," the story of his somewhat ill-conceived but ultimately successful quest to walk the trail-less expanse of desert wilderness that hides beneath the canyon's rims. We talk about the struggle to tell a story about the Colorado and the canyon that contains it that avoids the conventional morality tale of environment good, technology bad; the astonishing feat of engineering, unseen since the Great Pyramids that holds back Lake Powell; the punishment of untrailed nature; and the mythology of science, man as an island, and the wilderness as something we both crave and fear. Then I Am Myself The World - Christof Koch, Neuroscientist, DS Pod #27625 Aug 202402:45:42

Christof Koch is a neuroscientist who studies consciousness, and is best known for integrated information theory. IIT is a consciousness-first theory, which states that the experience of being someone (or something) is directly related to the causal powers of the underlying system. Up until relatively recently, Koch was something of a materialist - he believed that it would be possible to find the specific series of neural events in the brain that produce lived experience. A series of events, which he details in his new book "The I Am Myself the World" have led him to embrace more of an idealist perspective, which says that we are instantiations of a a much larger universal consciousness that permeates the universe. We talk to him about his transformation, the nature of consciousness and will, what it "causal powers" of a system have to do with consciousness, and the value of mystical experiences. Building a State From Scratch - The Venus Project, Simon Michaux, DSPod #27524 Aug 202402:26:29

The Venus Project was started in the 1980s by Jacques Fresco and Roxanne Meadows with the aim of showing that it was possible to lead a more human centered existence… as long as you built outside of the capitalist market system. Over the decades, the fortunes of the project have fluctuated - from an initial burst of enthusiasm and action (Meadows and Fresco built almost all the structures on the property by hand themselves) to the grinding reality of what it means to grow a stable and vibrant community, to the immense surge of popularity just as Fresco’s life came to an end. Project members Roxanne Meadows and Nate Dwindiddie come by the show with previous guest Simon Michaux to talk about the failures and successes of the project, and what it might look like when its reborn as the framework for Michaux’s Prometheus Project. Harmonic Keys to Olfaction and Consciousness - Dr. Luca Turin, University of Buckingham - DSPod #27418 Aug 202402:58:28

Dr Luca Turin is a biophysicist, writer, and perfume connoisseur whose work on fragrances seems to suggest that we don’t smell molecules, per se - we smell the complex vibrations of an atomic structure. Turin came to be convinced of this model for olfaction at the expense of the standard model of receptors binding smell molecules just on the basis of their shape due to a prediction he made about the smell of sulfur. If the pungent odor of rotten eggs and brimstone was due to the vibrational frequency of the sulfur atom attached to the molecule, then any other atom with a similar vibrational frequency, no matter its shape, should also smell of sulfur. He found a compatible molecule in an unexpected place, and the rest fell into place. We talk about his nascent passion for perfumes, why people are so reluctant to smell things, and the overlap between smell, resonance, and consciousness. Another Failed Bureaucratic Utopia - Drs. M.S. DeLay & A.V. Bendebury - DSPod #27315 Aug 202401:47:51

Today we're examining the impact of bureaucracy and financialization on modern society through the lens of David Graeber's "Utopia of Rules," with reference to another of his works, "Bullshit Jobs." We explore how these forces shape political ideologies, wealth extraction, and everyday life. Starting with the alienation caused by bureaucratic systems, the discussion moves through the fusion of finance and bureaucracy, which influences both worker-corporate relationships and democratic processes. Then we look into the global justice movement's exposure of systemic violence and the role of technology in societal challenges as a potential model for criticism. We also address the perception of value shaped by financial abstractions, the issues within the retirement system, and the personal reassessment prompted by psychedelics. The podcast concludes with a discussion on the potential of worker ownership and the importance of societal renewal through new linguistic templates to combat institutional stagnation. Transactional Interpretation Explains Quantum Spookiness? - Dr. John Cramer, U. Washington, DSPod #27212 Aug 202402:34:36

Today we're looking at how atoms talk to one another using light. This transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics, was developed by today's guest, Dr. John Cramer and former guest, Dr. Carver Mead back in the 1980s. We cover key concepts such as the double atom, handshake process, and the roles of Schrödinger and Heisenberg's approaches. The conversation explores wave function collapse, non-locality, and advanced potentials, along with the influence of ghost waves, time reversal, and phase relationships in energy transactions. We then examine the evolution of quantum mechanics interpretations, the intersection of physics and philosophy, and critiques of string theory. The episode concludes with insights into cosmology, the uniqueness of life, anti-aging research, and the development and material interpretations of the transactional interpretation.Tell us your thoughts in the comments! Human Hybrids, Autism & Discrete Evolution - Dr. Emily Casanova, Loyola University - DS Pod 27109 Aug 202402:18:23

Dr. Emily Casanova is a professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at Loyola University in New Orleans who studies autism, human/neanderthal hybridization, and sundry soft tissue disorders that are often co-inherited with autism. Her research has shown that autism spectrum disorders are underpinned by a complex network of genetic interactions whose first emergence can be traced back to human/neanderthal interbreeding nearly 40,000 years ago. This suggests that, contrary to popular belief, the grounds for autism spectrum disorders long predate the first diagnoses made in the early 20th century. We talk about why it’s so hard to come up with a genetic cause for autism, why “species” might not mean what we think it does, intricacies of embryogenesis, and why environmental causes are so hard to talk about. How the Economy Actually Works - Dr. Yeva Nersisyan, Franklin and Marshall - DS Pod 27005 Aug 202402:47:18

Dr. Yeva Nersisyan is a professor of economics at Franklin and Marshall College whose research focus includes Modern Monetary Theory, Post-Keynesianism, and the Institutionalist traditions. She has published widely on the subject of banking and financial instability, which is why we invited her on to talk about how the economy *actually* works. MMT theorists argue that Neo-classical economists have a deeply limited understanding of the economy, as demonstrated by the Fed’s recent inability to control inflation by adjusting interest rates - which is basically the only lever available to it. We discuss how it seems that no one who is sitting at the top of the economic pyramid seems to understand how to shift the course of the economy, how providing jobs is the key to stability, the emergence of modern economic policy in the post-war years, and much more. Henry Corbin's Poetic Fabric of Reality - Dr. Tom Cheetham, Author - DS Pod #26901 Aug 202403:03:43

Dr. Tom Cheetham is a naturalist, poet, and author who has spent the last few decades of his life engrossed in the work of Henry Corbin, who inspired a century of studies of the unconscious mind. Corbin’s aim was to understand the line that cut across the mystic traditions of the world, in the hopes of finding something that was the universal ground of being. To that end, he searched for answers in the work of everyone from Continental philosophers, to the medieval gnostics, to the Persian mystics and honed in on something he called the “imaginal realm,” inhabited by angels who guide their human charges towards a life of meaning and profundity. We talk with Cheetham about the nature of inspiration, the universal ground of experience, the search for truth, and the visionary power of psychedelic experiences Sign up for our Patreon and get episodes early + join our weekly Patron Chat https://bit.ly/3lcAasB AND rock some Demystify Gear to spread the word: https://demystifysci.myspreadshop.com/ Check out (00:00) Go! Endless War - Dr. Jeremi Suri, University of Texas, Austin - DSPod #26828 Jul 202402:31:56

Dr. Jeremi Suri is a professor of Public Affairs and History at the University of Texas, Austin whose recent work explores the idea that the American civil war never ended. Suri argues that the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse at the end of the Civil War was just a superficial conclusion of outright hostilities, not a true end to the massive division that ran across America during colonial times. Our conversation with Suri centers around the question of where these divisions come from, what has entrenched them, why the same social rifts are opening not just in America, but all around the world. Most importantly, we wrestle with what can be done about a seeping wound of discontent that refuses to heal. Needle in the Hay Sense-Making - Drs. M.S. DeLay & A.V. Bendebury DSPod #26726 Jul 202401:50:46

The last few weeks we've had some really explosive theories on the show, which have caused a stir in the comments and beyond. We sit down to talk about the philosophy behind why we believe exploring far out theories is so important, and use Paul Feyerabend's Against Method as the backbone for our discussion. We introduce the idea of scientific anarchy, which encourages us to lean into the uncomfortable reality that ideas cannot be prized simply because of their age, or their apparent agreement with existing data. The history of science is littered with theories that were wrong but useful, detectors that are engineered to give us the results we are expecting, and the weighty knowledge that the absence of evidence tells us nothing about what we'll find when we take a closer look at the inner workings of nature. Reverse Physics - Dr. Gabriele Carcassi, U. Michigan, DSPod #26518 Jul 202402:59:56

Prof. Gabriele Carcassi is a University of Michigan Physicists who became obsessed with a simple question during his training. Where do the mathematics of physics actually come from? They are handed down to us as students as if they were immutable laws of nature… but are they? Or are they simply mathematical transformations that have long ago left the realm of reality and made their home in the spheres of theory? It turns out that we really don’t know where the line between pure theory and physical reality can be drawn! Luckily, Carcassi and his research partner Prof. Christine Aidala have dedicated their time to deciphering what they call the “Assumptions of Physics,” a project which they hope will let them take apart the basic principles of the foundational science and put the whole thing back together again in a way that makes much more sense. Could We Be This Wrong About the Solar System? - Simon Shack, Tychos - DSpod #26414 Jul 202403:01:05

Simon Shack is an amateur astronomer, independent researcher, and author. He is the modern champion of an old idea, last held in Tycho Brahe’s time, that the sun is not at the center of the solar system. At first blush, this sounds preposterous, for we have hundreds of years of data that supports the heliocentric Copernican model. But the more you listen, the more your mind melts, because not only does the data fit… it seems to fit better than the conventional model in multiple cases. We spend the conversation unpacking Simon’s model, figuring out what makes it run, the assumptions that make sense, and the loose threads that still need to be woven in. It is a WILD ride, and a truly great exploration of what it means when the same set of observations can produce a radically different interpretation. To follow along visually, check out https://www.tychos.space/ where you can find a copy of Simon’s book and the Tychosium, a stellarium-type simulator built to show the inner workings of the model. A Sudden Savant: Futons to Fermions, Quantum Holography, and a New Calculus - Jason Padgett, #26311 Jul 202402:33:33

Today's episode features Jason Padgett, a physicist and artist whose path to a mathematical conception of reality began with a violent attack in his early 30s. We discuss this transformation after brain injury. How with zero mathematical background he found himself reinventing calculus. We discuss his attempts to bring himself into line with peers who had a very different formal training. Then we discuss his particular theoretical projects in physics. In particular he has developed a theory of informational constants of nature, which he calls holographic quantum information theory in an effort to unify quantum mechanics and Einsteinian relativity. To make sense of that we unpack concepts like cubits, hidden information, and quantum vector spin models. We close with a discussion of probabilistic reality and the nature of material reality versus mathematical models. Endgame: Big Tech Bytes the Dust - Jim Keller, Tenstorrent, Tesla, Apple, AMD, Intel #26207 Jul 202402:53:25

Jim Keller is a microprocessor engineer who has run the gauntlet of today’s leading tech companies during their peak performance years. He’s designed for Intel, AMD, Apple, and Tesla, he’s worked for Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, he’s survived the boom and bust cycle of the tech world, and is still surfing a wave of progress at least partially of his making. He’s currently CEO of Tenstorrent,  an AI chip startup that’s out to unseat NVIDIA, and is the co-founder of Atomic Semi, which aims to produce the world’s first tabletop semiconductor fabrication device. Normally, Jim’s interviews are all about the technical aspects of his work - chips, computer architecture, and the future of AI. We sat down for a conversation about the soft-power side of progress - building teams, surviving bubbles, why small orgs are better, how no one knows how to maintain the sweet spot between chaos and order, and the weird coincidence of living on a planet that’s basically made of the raw materials needed for computers.

Morphic Realities: Picasso Physics, Myth, & The New Philosophy - Formscapes, Kehlan Morgan #26130 Jun 202402:26:31

Today on the show we are meeting up with Kehlan Morgan, from  @Formscapes  on YouTube. Kehlan is a master of the past and helps wrestle with a wide range of favorite philosophical dilemmas. We question whether matter can produce consciousness or if it's a separate phenomenon. We discuss intergenerational memory and Sheldrake's theory of morphic fields, proposing a collective memory beyond genetics. We examine of the distinction between description and explanation in science, and how it impacts our understanding of reality. We critique modern science's disempowering effects, including the inversion of beneficial myths and the exploitation of unseen forces. Finally we glean insights from Rudolph Steiner's work, highlighting a schism between relational reality and objective reality, questioning the dominance of physics and exploring the limitations of a monistic worldview. What Stops Our Interstellar Future? - Devon Eriksen, Theft of Fire #26027 Jun 202402:00:57

Devon Eriksen is the author of the ongoing Space Orbital trilogy, which opened up with Theft of Fire, described as a "Shoot-em-up space opera, [of] mysterious alien artifacts, freedom-minded Belters versus corporate oligarchs..." In his work, Devon explores many of the themes we tinker with on the show - particularly the ethics of space exploration. A steadfast exploration of space-colonization, Devon brings a very different perspective to the human project not often embraced by the analytic academics we often encounter, who seem to be concerned with de-growth and the scaling back of our material economy. We talk about the role of government in space exploration, the colonial perils of the past in the context of the New Frontier, and the role of fiction in shaping objective reality.

No Petroleum, No Problem? - Dr. Simon Michaux, Geological Survey of Finland # 25923 Jun 202402:59:25

Dr. Simon Michaux is a professor of geometallurgy at the Geological Survey of Finland. After having spent several years in private industry, he was laid off during one of the regular busts that inevitably accompany booms in the mining sector. In that period, Simon found a new appreciation for the material basis of civilization while taking temporary work as an organic farmer. When he returned to intellectual work as a professor, he brought this real-world understanding to geopolitical assessments, presenting his analyses to everyone from economists to UN delegations. Ultimately, what separates Simon from his peers is his ability to suggest a realistic solution set to the difficulty of planning a technologically accelerating future within the confines of a fundamentally finite material ecosystem. He lays out a set of alternative approaches to nuclear power, combustion power, and engines that will absolutely make you stop and reconsider the possibilities. His presentation begins with the idea that we may be running out of petroleum, but that doesn't mean we have to be running out of fuel. A subsequent podcast will explore Simon's ongoing work to demonstrate his principles in an idealized city-of-the future in the desert of Peru. More on his Prometheus Project to come, very soon. What's Making People So Fat? - DemystifyPod #25820 Jun 202402:05:18

Dr. Barbara Corkey is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry at Boston University. Over her prolific and outstanding academic career she went deep into the mechanics of metabolic disease. Along the way, she stumbled upon some shocking insight about the nature of obesity as she watched the epidemic unfold in real time. Despite the popular wisdom that weight gain is a simple matter of calories in v. calories out, Dr. Corkey came to understanad that there was a sea of environmental toxins wreaking havoc on our food supply which seemed to influence weight outcomes more than anything else. Her revelations reach into every aspect of the food supply and the organization of our modern civilization. What do you make of it? Tell us your thoughts in the comments! Understanding Nature Without Models? - Dr. Gopi Vijaya, DemystifyPod #25716 Jun 202402:15:15

Dr. Gopi Vijaya began his scientific career in solar physics but quickly branched out into fields as diverse as projective geometry, Goethean Science, foundations of astronomy, calculus, and the Reciprocal System of physics. Our conversation begins with the relationship between science and technology and moves into the philosophical realm asking seemingly bizarre questions like - can we do science without models? Also - how do we collaborate as thinkers without competing? Along the way we explore outstanding anomalies in light, electromagnetism, gravity and color theory. It's a wild ride through many of our favorite topics here. Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Transhumanism: Path to Transcendence or Extinction? - Dr. Miklos Lukacs, USMP - DemystifyPod #25613 Jun 202402:00:47

Dr. Miklos Lukacs is a Research Professor of Science and Technology Policy at the University of San Martin de Porres in Lima, Peru. He also happens to be one of the leading critics of transhumanism, which he defines as the technologically-driven push for super longevity, super intelligence, and super wellbeing. Lukacs argues that this campaign threatens the historical relationship between humans and technology, where our tools serve us, rather than the other way around. He worries that by placing such an outsize importance on external tools, we allow ourselves to be molded into an entirely new form that emerges not from bottom-up evolutionary forces, but from an external, top-down locus of control. Our conversation lays out the basics of what Lukacs identifies as transhumanism, and then turns to an exploration of how to balance progress with tradition. What Happens When the Party Ends? - Drs. A. V. Bendebury & M. S. DeLay - DemystifyPod #25509 Jun 202401:28:01

Anastasia has been reading Vaclav Smil's Energy and Civilization, so we decided to sit down for a meta conversation about petroleum, prime movers, and geopolitics. This solo chat ties together a bunch of the conversations we've had on the show in the last year about climate, technology and the energy transition. Historically, we've been pretty skeptical when people start banging on about the need to transition to a completely electric grid, but Smil makes a really compelling point - all human endeavors depend on motive power. We go further to consider the downstream consequences of the prime movers we rely on, the risk of this being the last civilization for the next 20 million years, and the strange software called "progress" that was installed in humans when we departed from our primate roots. Can Intuition Outperform Reason? - Dr. Michael Hughes, DemystifyPod #25407 Jun 202402:29:08

This is Dr. Hughes second appearance on the podcast. His background is in biochemistry and biophysics of protein folding, and water hydration structures. But today we're digging under the floorboards of science itself. Is it possible to have a science that isn't built on some set of assumed values? To tackle this issue, we dig into esoteric mysticism - particularly the work of Rudolph Steiner, who prophesized many of the features of the world we see today back in the late 19th century. This leads us to a path where we explore the modern scientific approach to understanding nature, grounded in materialism in all its splendor and shortcomings, asking where do we go from here? What does a healthy science of the future actually look like? Tell us your thoughts in the comments! Can Donut Economics Change How We View Progress? - Kate Raworth, DSPod #25230 May 202401:46:54

Kate Raworth is an Economist best known for “donut economics,” a model that attempts to map the balance between essential human needs and planetary boundaries. She proposes that the last few hundred years of economic theories were created with a monomaniacal focus on growth that was only possible on a planet with relatively untapped natural resources. After more than two hundred years of industrial development, older economic theories cannot be applied to the necessities of today. Namely, a sustainable material economy for the generations yet to come. We talk about what an economic system that provides for everyone’s basic humans needs can look like, places that have started putting donut economics to use, and how to balance personal responsibility with survival in an unjust system. How Much Money Can We Print? - Warren Mosler, Modern Monetary Theory - DSPod #25127 May 202402:41:36

Warren Mosler is an economist, hedge fund manager, and proponent of modern monetary theory, an economic model that posits fiscal crises are caused by governments not spending enough money. From Mosler’s perspective, the reversal of any recession starts with getting very comfortable with deficit spending. Opponents argue that unchecked spending eventually leads to inflation of the currency and economic collapse, which Mosler argues is impossible as long as you know how money actually works. We dive deep into chartalism, the theory about the creation of money that sits at the heart of MMT, lay out why deficit spending doesn’t have to lead to inflation, and why the Federal Government’s checks will never bounce. Invisible Light Matters - Scott Zimmerman, DSPod #25023 May 202401:43:49

Scott Zimmerman is a mechanical engineer whose life took a sharp turn when he started to think about the relationship indoor lighting, biology, and solar radiation. He believes that near-infrared light, an invisible component of sunlight from ~800 to 3,000 micrometer wavelengths, is vital for human health. Unfortunately, these are the exact frequencies that our indoor lights and digital devices are incapable of producing. Zimmerman believes that the shift away from incandescent lighting inside of homes has contributes massively to wide-spread hormonal issues in modern population. His mechanism is that our skin, the largest endocrine gland in the universe, is actually a light harvesting organ that uses all the components of light to produce everything from sex hormones to vitamin D. We talk to him about the effect of sunlight on the human body, how he transitioned from mechanical engineering to making lightbulbs, the active harm of blue light, and much more.Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! Goodbye to Dark Matter - Dr. Raj Gupta, Cosmologist, DSPod #24919 May 202401:40:19

Dr. Rajendra Gupta is a physics professor at the University of Ottawa who was in the headlines a few months ago for his assertion that the universe might be at least twice as old as we realize. He’s back at the radical reshaping of physics with his latest paper, which proposes that we can do away with dark matter and dark energy. Currently, these invisible substances are thought to make up something like 70-90% of our universe, depending on who you ask. But they’re invisible, undetectable, placeholders for some force or particle that can make the math work out. As an alternative, Gupta proposes modeling the universe with two ideas in mind. One, that the constants of nature are not, in fact, constant and two, that the red light shift seen in the cosmos that is considered to be a signature of expansion is actually the fingerprint of “tired light.” Together, these concepts allow him to recalculate the mechanics of the universe without relying on dark matter and dark energy, which is pretty cool. We talk about the impetus for this work, the meaning of tired light, why expansion isn’t going away any time soon, and the future of physics. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! Where do Physical Constants Come From? - Thad Roberts, DemystiCon '24, DSPod #24817 May 202402:23:35

Another talk from our recent April conference in Austin, TX, with Thad Roberts from The Physics Monastery. Thad speaks about his institute's recent progress in an ongoing struggle to comprehend the secrets of the constants of nature. These are the steady quantities that scale all the behaviors of the natural world, from electricity and magnetism, to gravity, or even elasticity. It seems strange that there are these fixed numbers inside of all our scientific formulas, but the physical significance is often forsaken. Even worse, we often have no idea why the constant is fixed as it is. Why is the speed of light limited? Why does the electron orbit at that speed? Why are they related just so? These questions and more get aired out in depth. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! Extremes of Consciousness Research - Andres Emilsson & Dr. Ogi Ogas, DSPod #24712 May 202402:51:34

Humans have long encountered experiences that challenge their rational ideas about the world. Encounters with angels, demons, fairies, gnomes, or other spirits have been the standards of folklore since time immemorial. We agree with Jung that these revelations are scientifically valuable, though best explored though any lens but materialism; i.e. physics. When we learn about common bizarre experiences, we learn about ourselves. Author Ogi Ogas joins us again, alongside Qualia Research Institute's Andrés Gómez Emilsson, to discuss close encounters with the modern version of those elusive, yet timeless, entities. We begin with the phenomenological approaches to studying consciousness. We then compare both guest's experience with non-human minds. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! The Deuterium Dilemma - Dr. Stephanie Seneff, MIT, DSPod #24609 May 202401:40:50

Today we are sitting down with Dr. Stephanie Seneff, an MIT researcher, who has spent more than a decade obsessively investigating the role that industrial herbicides play in the modern health-scape. This is our second conversation with Dr. Seneff, following up on our detailed discussion of the myriad ways that the herbicide, glyphosate, interferes with cellular processes throughout the body. This time we are digging a bit deeper into how herbicides affect the balance of deuterium, or heavy hydrogen, in the body, and how this dysregulation might promote various disease states. We also go much further into the solution sets facing humanity as these startling realizations become more and more difficult to ignore. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! The Day Physicists Broke Reality - Dr. Alberto Martinez, UTAustin, DemystiCon '24 DSPod #24506 May 202402:17:46

Today we're proud to share another talk from DemystiCon '24 with legendary history of physics, Dr. Alberto Martinez from the University of Texas, Austin. This is our second podcast with Dr. Martinez, unpacking the hidden history of the physicists that brought us to the strange quantum foundation for reality where reality stops making sense. In his talk, Dr. Martinez explores a few key moments where things appear to have gone astray around the turn of the 20th century. He then entertains a luxuriously deep Q&A session exploring solution sets, alternative approaches to physics education, and the role of epistemic humility in truly productive science. Professor Martinez is a prolific, and ingenious author and we can't recommend his books enough. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! Free Speech, Civil War, & the Public Square - Dr. M.S Delay & Dr. A.V. Bendebury, DSPod #24402 May 202401:20:24

It's our final solo conversation from the tour and we're breaking down an issue that we have held different perspectives on for quite some time: the limits & importance of free speech. In part, we are responding the documentary "This Place Rules" by Channel 5 creator, Andrew Callaghan, which tracks the absurdity, hipocracy, and more than anything, the profiteering surrounding the buildup to the 2021 invasion of the Capitol in Washington D.C. Shilo argues that it could have been avoided if dissidents hadn't had their voices removed from the internet. Nastia isn't convinced, on account of the power of the incentives backing the revolt. In the end, we circle around the need for a de-algorithmatized public forum, which might provide the basis for an actual democratic republic. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! Liquid Sun, Mercury's Precession, Solar Cycle +Q&A - Dr. P.M.Robitaille, DemystiCon '24, DSPod #24328 Apr 202402:36:53

This presentation was recorded on April 7th, 2024 at the first DemystifySci conference in Austin TX. Dr. Pierre-Marie Robitaille presents an overview of his multi-decadal quest to understand the material basis of the stars. He also reveals a new theory to explain Mercury's anomalous precession - one that doesn't revert to warped spacetime or mathematical acrobatics. In the process, a clever solution to the mysterious solar cycles of magnetism is revealed, along with a possible mechanism for planetary formation, and sun spot production. Dr. Robitaille has faced an onslaught of attacks from the astrophysical community since he first turned his attention to the sun, perhaps because the material basis of the sun underpins all astrophysical revelations of modern times from black holes to the big bang. Like it or not, the material understanding of the sun appears to be in dire need of revision, and Dr. Robitaille has some unimpeachable concerns about the status quo. The Paradox of Progresss - Dr. M.S Delay and Dr. A.V. Bendebury, DSPod #24225 Apr 202401:18:22

It’s week 5 on the road, and we’re deep in the weeds about the question of what we, as scientists, owe the world. Technological progress alone seems like a weak orienting principle, as does abandoning the pursuit of knowledge completely. So how do we hew a path that makes sense, when it seems like the institutions and organizations around us have gone astray? To help us make sense of the interface between science and ethics, we turn to an essay called “To Young Scientists,” read by Ayn Rand at MIT in the 1960s. Rand was writing at the peak of the nuclear age, where the destruction of the species, if not the planet, seemed imminent. Today, the threat of nuclear conflict looms once again, but the cutting edge risk lies in the ceaseless development of machine learning and AI technologies that threaten to engulf all of human practice. There are no easy answers at hand, but we eke out a few basic principles that can serve as the starting point for building a life where progress & meaning can align. The Secret to Impossibly Precise Stonework of Ancient Times - Marcell Fóti, DSPod #24121 Apr 202401:41:17

Marcell Fóti is an ancient mysteries researcher who is trying to figure out how the ancient Egyptians and other cultures were able to carve stones with sub-millimeter precision with relatively primitive bronze tools. Fóti’s experiments with geopolymers - ceramic polymers that can easily be mistaken for natural stone - have led him to the conclusion that the inexplicable stonework of the ancient world doesn’t have to remain a mystery. We talk to him about Natron Theory, the five part explanation for how Egyptians made their false stones, the role that natural salt deposits play in the development of a stone-making civilization, evidence that precise stonework and natron are correlated around the world, and the open questions about the ancient stone makers that remain. Techno-futurist SkyGod & UAP Mania - Dr. M.S Delay and Dr. A.V. Bendebury, DSPod #24019 Apr 202401:05:49

On the road between Austin and Santa Fe we make a pit stop in Roswell, New Mexico and sit down to make heads or tails of the UAP phenomena. Both of us are skeptics who want to believe, but are cursed by a nature that prevents us from committing to a single perspective. Climate is Changing, But... - Dr. Steve Koonin, NYU - DSPod #23914 Apr 202402:21:02

Dr. Steven Koonin is a theoretical physicist, former Chief Scientist at BP, former Under Secretary for Science at the Department of Energy in the Obama administration, and is currently a professor of Civil and Urban Engineering at NYU. He is also the author of Unsettled, a book about the abilities and limits of climate science. We talk with him about the great distance between the scientific reports and public conception, the social unrest that's seeded by unwarranted fear of impending catastrophe, and the delicate art of speaking out against motivated consensus. Is Tech Causing Human Speciation? Drs. M.S. DeLay & A. Bendebury, DSPod #23804 Apr 202401:28:59

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 This is our second week on the road and we're broadcasting from uber-sunny Joshua Tree, California. Today we start out with the observation that a dominant faction of the techno-futurist community seems to believe that if our civilization maximizes intelligence, everything will be just fine in the end. We intuitively balk at this promise - and in general, we are skeptical at the lack of vision about what that future might look like. To understand this belief we have to understand what is meant by "intelligence." Then we have to consider the alternatives. We look at the evolution of this dream/nightmare from the earliest days of computer science through the lenses of sci-fi authors like Bradbury & PKDick up through a recent JRE interview with Ray Kurzweil. Is Water the Dark Matter of Biology? Dr. Michael Hughes, DSPod #23731 Mar 202402:40:48

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 Today we are hanging out with our friend Dr. Michael Hughes, a post-doctoral fellow at St. Jude's Research Hospital in Memphis. Michael has a long history of trying to understand the role that water plays in fundamental biological operations from structural assembly to diseases like Alzheimers and Prion disorders. Presently, he is hard at work on a biological theory of everything where water plays out the role of central actor in biological processes from form to consciousness. Our conversation today begins with Michael's journey into the water rabbit hole, exploring the strange way that water structures itself within cells. We work toward an understanding of water as a photo-electrically, an electro-statically sensitive molecule capable of mechanically altering cellular function in response to conscious and external signals. We hope to have Michael back to explore a mutual fascination with the historic interface of spirituality and science by way of Rudolph Steiner and Western esotericism. In our first On Tour Solo Edition we're examining how a theorist's metaphysics shape their inquiry. We establish metaphysics as the underlying assumptions that allow for the logical processing of a natural phenomenon. We see how several of our guests have differed in metaphysics, particularly with respect to fundamental physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. Are the Pyramids Made of Synthetic Stone? - Dr. Michel Barsoum, DSPod #23524 Mar 202401:48:45

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 Dr. Michel Barsoum is a materials scientist at Drexel University who is the champion of a controversial theory about the great pyramids of Giza, which says the pyramids were not fully carved from natural stone, but were cast from a geopolymer concrete mixture. For decades, Egyptologists have dismissed the notion that the pyramids incorporated any human-made cement-like materials. But Barsoum's team at Drexel University has uncovered startling new evidence from advanced microscopy analysis of pyramid samples. We talk to him about becoming entranced with the deep history of Egypt, the process of determining the true nature of a stone, and the open questions about this lost civilization that keep him up at night. What if these discoveries are enough to reshape our understanding of just how advanced and ingenious the ancient Egyptian builders were? Is Quantum Spookiness the Result of a 300 Year Old Rivalry? - Dr. Helen De Cruz, DSPod #23421 Mar 202402:16:42

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 In this episode we are exploring the origins of the metaphysics that underpin the modern approach to a scientific understanding of nature with Dr. Helen De Cruz, who is the Danforth Chair in the Humanities at Saint Louis University. Professor De Cruz' research focuses on philosophy of cognitive science and philosophy of religion, with an eye for historic progressions through ideologies across the ages. In her own words, she is guided by the following question: "We spend what seem on the face of it outlandish amounts of time and energy on these pursuits, which appear to be inessential in keeping us alive in the struggle for survival and reproduction. Why do we make life even more complicated than it already is?" We aim this line of inquiry at understanding the state of today's modern physical conception of the universe: a highly mathematized, often paradoxical interpretation of fundamental material reality. Did Newton & Einstein Get Gravity & Inertia All Wrong? - Dr. André Assis, DSPod #23317 Mar 202402:22:50

This is our second conversation with esteemed physics professor, Dr. Andrê Koch Torres Assis. Following our earlier discussion of Weber's electrodynamics, we now move into Professor Assis' other passion: Machian dynamics. Mach is perhaps one of the most well-known behind-the-scenes players in the saga of modern physics. Einstein and others often point to Mach as inspiring their ideas but it is often unclear exactly what Mach was proposing when he said that inertia was simply the result of the gravity of the sum total of all of the distant celestial bodies acting upon something locally. In this podcast we explore Mach's ideas through a few simple experiments. Please tell us your thoughts in the comments!
