| #396: Coming in from Toronto, Canada: The Reed Effect! | 10 Jun 2022 | 01:04:46 | |
Coming in once again from Toronto, Canada: The Reed Effect bends, beguiles, and rocks with "Trampled Under" - their next full-force single/video from their album 1973. With Lead Vocalist/Guitarist Kirk Reed continuing to honor the memory of his late brother, Chris Reed (bass/backing vocals), The Reed Effect has carried forward their mission to feed the hungry ears of the music masses worldwide. "Trampled Under" is the foundational track upon which their album 1973 that has been solidly built. WATCH -- PREVIOUS RELEASES FROM THEIR ALBUM 1973 - "Rise Up" and "Fine Here" "Trampled Under" is arguably the strongest track from this album. It definitely stands out as it's the darkest and most emotional. All the other tracks are rockers. Also, the song was all developed around Chris's unique bass line. I remember Chris, Bryan Fontez, and I spent the better part of a day just working out the main riff until we were happy with it. We feel it reached its highest potential."' - Kirk Reed 2020 was a hard year for all of us and The Reed Effect has definitely felt that pain. Chris Reed, bassist, vocalist, bandmate, friend, and brother tragically took his own life on October 10th, 2020, just as the new music was about to be released. Being very close, Chris's death hit Kirk hard. But Kirk feels it is important to let the world hear this music - not just as a tribute to Chris and his legacy, but as a celebration of their collaboration and brotherly love. All the links!!!! | #387: "Awake At Last" release new single and announce tour! | 15 May 2022 | 01:06:24
Awake at Last released their new single titled "Bloodline" to all digital outlets! "Bloodline" is available at: WATCH Awake At Last - Bloodline (Official Music Video): Awake At Last returned with a new single "Bloodline" on April 29th. Produced by Erik Ron (Godsmack, Black Veil Brides, I Prevail), the hard-hitting track contains plenty of angst at the current state of the world. “Bloodline is written from a perspective of frustration, and a reluctance to accept the current state we all live in. The song questions the media, and how during such a dark time people seemed to be more divided than ever, rather than come together. It asks the question of whether or not we can learn from history, or if we are doomed to repeat it. I wanted it to connect to the listeners who couldn’t help but worry about what is going to happen next and whether or not we can rely on the current state of media and information to be prepared for it.” - says the band's vocalist, Vincent Torres. | #300: Athens-based metal outfit W.E.B. | 13 Nov 2021 | 00:57:37
Forged in 2002 out of a “necessity to scream, blast, and create emotions and get on stage to exchange them with an audience,” Greece’s W.E.B. have steadily forged a path to becoming one of the premier European symphonic extreme metal bands expressing darkness and death through adrenaline and poetry. An output that’s both candid and theatrical, W.E.B.is here to move you, provoke you, and invite you on a journey through raven dark and starless nights. With four albums already under their collective belt, 2021’s fifth full-length, Colosseum, is inarguably the band’s greatest and most direct work to date. “We wanted this album to be as straightforward as we could make it. We wanted it to be aggressive and to the point, and at the same time we have pushed literally everything, higher, faster, louder, harder. It is our most metal album,” states guitarist/vocalist Sakis Prekas. With Colosseum, the band welcomes two new members: drummer Nikitas Mandolas, who joined following the recording of 2017’s Tartarus and whose playing is perfectly suited to the music W.E.B. make, and bassist/vocalist Hel Pyre. “Apart from the great lyrics and the perfect bass performance, she offered her brutal and clean vocals on many parts of the album, leaving her own mark of fire. This is a completely new element for W.E.B. that really gave a unique character to the material.” With the lineup solidified, writing commenced in early 2019, sending ideas back and forth to one another, subsequently honing each song over many pre-production sessions. “With no references, when we make music, our only thoughts are that we want to make it sound as awesome as we can,” states Sakis. The dramatic orchestrations are of course a large part of that, with Christos Antoniou of Septicflesh handling this aspect of the sound as he has on previous W.E.B. releases. “Metal is the most revolutionary music genre ever to exist; adding to it symphonic orchestra makes the experience even more epic and emotional in a massive way. We want our music to inspire the senses, thus we aspire to make it intense from our perspective.” This episode is proudly brought to you by: Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off Mack Weldon: https://www.mackweldon.com/suckit Promo Code "SUCKIT" for 20% off! | #299: The Fury that is Death Metal Band, "Genocide Pact" | 12 Nov 2021 | 01:00:59
GENOCIDE PACT returns with their eponymous new full-length, set for release December 3rd via Relapse Records. An overdose of gut-wrenching death metal, Genocide Pact is heavy, engrossing, and undoubtedly brutal. “This album reflects on the feeling of watching the world crumble while dealing with personal tragedy,” says guitarist/vocalist Tim Mullaney. True to his word, every track on Genocide Pact is a sonic assault brimming with palpable malaise. From the guttural screams in the album’s opener “Led To Extinction,” to the driving double bass that carries “Perverse Dominion,” and a head rattling low end on “Deprive Degrade,” Genocide Pact is wholly negative death metal. The fury behind Genocide Pact captures the band’s collective frustrations and personal journeys through these turbulent times. “You turn on the news and see mass shootings, a global pandemic, endless war, and corporations and politicians trying to sell you bullshit,” says Mullaney. “You pick up your phone and another friend or family member has died. On top of that, you’re broke as fuck and work endlessly for a boss that doesn’t even know your name. You find yourself paranoid, pissed off, and embracing nihilism.” GENOCIDE PACT has learned to embrace the negativity, churning out one of 2021’s ugliest and unforgiving records. Genocide Pact will be released on CD, LP and digital formats. Find physical preorders HERE and digital downloads / streaming services HERE. | #293: Richmond Instrumental Post-Rock Band, "SHY, LOW" | 04 Nov 2021 | 00:53:23
SHY, LOW are true masters of the exquisite craft of stark contrasts and broad dynamics, from delicate crescendos to the grandiose power of the riff… a craft that lies at the heart of every outstanding instrumental rock record. With Snake Behind The Sun the Richmond, Virginia-based four-piece has made an epic album brimming with creativity, groove, heaviness, and truly outstanding songwriting -- a record that is intricate and mature, yet gloriously anthemic at the same time. Indeed, Snake Behind The Sun is an astounding and immensely diverse record that will appeal to fans sitting on all ends of the broad spectrum of modern heavy rock music Snake Behind The Sun is available on CD, LP, and digital formats. Find preorders at THIS LOCATION. Fans of Pg. Lost, This Will Destroy You, Caspian, And So I Watch You From Afar, Russian Circles, Thrice, etc. pay heed. Recorded, mixed, and produced at Vudu Studios in Long Island, New York by Mike Watts (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Glassjaw, Hopesfall, Tides Of Man), SHY, LOW’s Snake Behind The Sun pulls from elements from previous eras of the band, but also pushes into new territory. The result is a slicker, more modern, layered three-dimensional sound. “The recipe for achieving that began with a lot of pre-production on our end,” comments guitarist Zak Bryant. “We demoed the entire record at home prior to entering the studio, reworking some songs several times before calling them done. From there, it was Mike [Watts]. After hearing his work with bands like O’Brother, Lume, Glassjaw, and others, we grew very fond of the drum sounds he got, and his ear for overall mix balance and production.” The other important ingredient was drummer Dylan Partridge -- who at the time of recording, was a commissioned drummer and is now a fix band member -- and the phenomenal drum room at Vudu Studios. These two elements were crucial in creating the overall vibe and atmosphere for the record. “Holing up in the studio for three weeks to track the record was extremely beneficial and something none of us had done in the past -- it gave us the ability to really fine tune the songs alongside a producer, and the ability to experiment with various gear not normally at our disposal,” recalls Bryant. The album title is a metaphor for the notion that darkness and negativity can remain hidden even among seemingly positive forces and positive beings in one’s life. As a matter of fact, the snake crawled out from behind the sun, while the band was in the studio recording the album: “By week three, there were talks of New York state locking down; with one day left before the lock down was alleged to go into effect, it became a mad dash to finish tracking the record so we could book it home to Richmond, Virginia,” says bass player Drew Storcks. Of the new single, "These Fast Times," the band says, "We live in a lifetime where our lives are laid out on a strict timeline. The hourglass empties itself at a fast pace but we are so blinded by evolution, that we hardly see the end of its race. As we grew up younger, it seemed like we weren't so rushed to live our lives ; possibly the main source of that was the lack of technology and progress as we see it today. Maybe it’s time to go back to our old habits and live more instead of consuming more. We may have evolved as per say, but in another way it seems like we’re getting further away from how our human lives were intended to thrive." | #287: New Music Friday with Beauty School Dropout! | 23 Oct 2021 | 01:07:18
Los Angeles-based three-piece BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT (BSD) take on their innermost demons in a bloodthirsty, action-packed music video for their catchy single “Demons,” taken from their debut EP BOYS DO CRY, released on October 8. The video was directed by Danny Pollack (Machine Gun Kelly, The White Stripes) and is available to watch on VEVO or streaming directly below. “This video is basically exactly what the song means to us,” elaborates the band. “We die… our own bullsh*t kills us. Except Bardo, he’s actually a sober nerd, we just thought that was funny.” BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT display a seamless mixture of pop, alt-rock, punk and hip-hop across BOYS DO CRY’s six vivid tracks—including their recent single “I Love It” feat. Jason Aalon Butler of Fever 333 which is currently receiving airplay on SiriusXM’s Octane channel. The EP was executive produced by 4x Grammy Award-winning producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) and Butler. BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT was formed in 2020 by vocalist Cole Hutzler and bassist Brent (ex-Strangefaces), along with producer and guitarist Bardo. The trio have developed a dedicated fanbase garnered from their viral TikTok videos--which have over 900k views and showcases the band’s own ‘renegade rock’ take on mainstream pop singles—in addition to their gripping live performance which has seen them perform three sold-out Los Angeles shows in the past year and a national tour with Royal & The Serpents and Pvris. The band recently guested on Royal & The Serpents’ set at Emo Nite Vegas Vacation in Las Vegas performing their single “Starphucker” on which Royal & The Serpents is featured. | #286: Drug Addiction and The Emotion of Music with Pop Rock Artist, Kulick | 22 Oct 2021 | 01:08:58
Rising modern pop-rock act KULICKhas debuted "The People I Know (Dont Like Me)" the second single off his forthcoming EP 'Everyone I Know Will Die,' due out in 2022. Kulick says, This is a song about not fitting in with who you’re around and being very aware of it. Kulick will be heading out on the road supporting The Spill Canvas on the band's fall headline tour. Dates kick off November 4th and run through November 21. Tickets for all shows are now available at www.thespillcanvas.net. The tour follows on the heels of his recent series of headline shows earlier this month. An artistic visionary, singer-songwriter, producer, audio engineer and lover of life, Kulick continues to mesmerize music fans with an ever-growing catalog of deeply personal, yet relatable songs that combine his roots in heavy rock music with ultra-catchy pop melodies, resulting in a sound all his own. With his previous album, the highly introspective ‘Yelling In A Quiet Neighborhood’ (and its acoustic companion piece ‘Sitting In A Quiet Coffeehouse’), the artist, also known as Jacob Kulick, further challenged himself by expanding his sound while tackling subjects close to his heart with his songwriting. Various singles off of ‘Yelling In A Quiet Neighborhood’ landed on a number of highly coveted Spotify and Apple Music playlists (resulting in over 5 million streams worldwide), while also garnering spins on major radio stations around the country. Kulick continues to broaden his fanbase via glowing media coverage in several national and international media outlets including Spin Magazine, American Songwriter, Substream, The Noise and Rock Sound, which called it "...an emotional and enthralling take on dark alt-pop." | #284: Scranton, PA Band, Maguas | 20 Oct 2021 | 00:45:14
An emo-leaning, alternative rock outfit based in Scranton, PA, The Maguas are Erik Miller (Vocals), Matthew Jenkins (Lead Guitar), Daulton Rissinger (Rhythm Guitar), Luke Prusinski (Bass), and Brandon Ossont (Drums). Established in 2018, the band released their debut EP, ‘Good Beer,’ the following year. The six-track, self-produced record was a demonstration of the collective’s unique songwriting capabilities, boasting songs written by each member prior to their coalescence. The notable exception, however, was, “Funeral.” The closing track brought them back together for an anthemic display of their aggressive pop-punk power, which soon accentuated performances alongside the likes of Forever Came Calling, Assuming We Survive, and We Were Sharks. Partnering with producer Nik Bruzzese (Man Overboard, The Wonder Years), The Maguas set to work on their sophomore release in early 2020. ‘One of Us Is Lying’ dropped later that year, quickly garnering significant traction within the scene and earning them recognition from an array of outlets including The Popko Project, New Noise Magazine, and Alternative Press. Once again working with Bruzzese, the band is now setting forth on their third iteration with an anticipated release in 2021. With a solid foundation underfoot, they’re diving deep into dark and vulnerable lyrical thematics to advance their signature “novel yet nostalgic” emo sound. Following the successful release of their first single of 2021 "Drifter", The Maguas are beyond excited to share their highly anticipated second single “Shapeless.” "Shapeless" Music Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPdZisLsjbADirected, shot, and edited by Alex Zarek Tickets to the December 8th Toys for Tots Benefit Concert: Moshing Around the Christmas Tree Toys for Tots Benefit Feat. | #385: The Band LENNE releases their debut EP "A Sympathetic Antipathy" | 08 May 2022 | 01:05:59
A Sympathetic Antipathy is the culmination of a few years of musical collaboration. The project was produced & co-written by Morgan Rose along with Leonard Cerzosie Jr., Corey Lowery, and Jim Taylor. In its various stages of recording, engineering talents include Jose Urquiza, James "Fluff" Harley, and Mike Ferretti. The initial inspiration for the EP was the passing of Lenny's mother after years of battling ALS. Tracks like "Miracle" were written about that struggle. Rose & Cerzosie have a history of writing & recording together and included a remastered version of a song they wrote with The Infinite Staircase in 2013 called "No Amends". Other musicians featured on the EP include Chris Caffrey of Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Justin Taylor of Alborn. Lenne has plans to play in support of their new EP throughout 2022. The current band line up consists of heavy hitting, Maryland musicians Mike Slaski, Rob Landon, and Stephen Hybdzinski; alongside Evan Crider ,Taylor from PA and Cerzosie from NY. "This was originally supposed to just be a session in Atlanta with Morgan & Corey. The plan was to do a song in honor of my mom. We ended up having such cool, sometimes borderline morbid chemistry. Funny fact? The original song that started this whole thing didn't even make the EP. We went along this darker, heavier path while still maintaining all the melodies we initially created" says Leonard Cerzosie Jr. The Dark Side Of Music | Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thedarksideof_music The Dark Of Music (@thedarksideof_music) • Instagram photos and videos https://www.instagram.com/thedarksideof_music/ Black Rose Media (theblackrosemedia.com) https://www.theblackrosemedia.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thedarksideofmusic/support

| #279: SYMPHONIC ROCK SINGER-SONGWRITER, IVA TORIC | 08 Oct 2021 | 01:01:06 | |
Hauntingly evocative symphonic rock singer-songwriter IVA TORIC spent the summer following the early days of the global pandemic writing material for her sophomore album DEAD RECKONING due in fall 2022. The record includes instrumentation from Gregg Cash (guitars, bass, arrangement) and Dylan Howard (drums) and was recorded with producer/engineer Jim Kaufman and assistant producer Ryan Molder, all of whom previously worked with IVA on her debut 2020 album The Devil’s Mark. Grammy Award-winning engineer Ted Jensen (Evanescence, Alice In Chains, Green Day) handled mastering duties. IVA premiered DEAD RECKONING’s debut single “Wasting Water” with a resonant music video yesterday (September 23) via Ghost Cult Magazine. The video was recorded by Myles Erfuth and incorporates nature elements from the shooting location in Kernville, CA. “Wasting Water” is available now across all digital platforms HERE and its music video can be seen streaming below or directly via YouTube HERE. ‘Wasting Water’ invokes the power of water to describe a deteriorating domestic relationship,” declares IVA. “I wanted to explore the reciprocal existence between humans and water--how it both nourishes us and destroys us, and how we both cherish and waste it. As we change the course of rivers and pollute groundwater, we simultaneously need water to survive. We try to control it, but it breaks free of our chains and causes mass destruction. It is profound to think how similar our relationship with water is to our relationships with each other, with time, and with life itself. My songwriting is about tapping into the collective human experience, so this song is both deeply personal and universal. As you listen, ask yourself ‘in what aspects of my life am I wasting water?’’ Iva Toric Merch Code "suckitpod" for 10% off Black Rose Media (theblackrosemedia.com) This episode is proudly brought to you by: Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off Mack Weldon: https://www.mackweldon.com/suckit Promo Code "SUCKIT" for 20% off! | #277: Karma Kids "Vibes Part 2" Album Preview! | 06 Oct 2021 | 00:55:08
Karma Kids was formed in 2019 by Jon Benjamin and Zaac Wesco. They ran with the dubbed sub-genre “emocore” debuting with a double album, “Dystopian Dream” in early 2020, which featured driving early 2000’s emo instrumentals with screaming vocals. The band started gaining traction notably from the single “Matrix” which featured Bowling For Soup’s Jaret Reddick. Throughout 2020, they recruited Vito Hicks, Brandon Sloan, and Topher Kirnec to complete the five piece. In late 2020, the band ditched the screaming vocals and put out an EP titled “Chemical Drugs”. Shortly after the release, the band announced a partnership with Legend Recordings/InGrooves Music Group to handle distribution. Once again, they move to another corner of the emocore horizon with “vibes part 2.” by adding in elements of emo rap into the songs. “vibes part 2.” is due out October 8th. | #267: The Band Watersdeep, RETURNS! | 21 Sep 2021 | 00:56:02
Happy Monday! We are now getting back to regular programming now the Blue Ridge Rock Fest is behind us. So today we kick off a new week with the band Watersdeep! We talk to them about their experience at BRRF, new upcoming music, and a big concert announcement! Watersdeep is a five piece emotional pop punk/post hardcore band from the Washington D.C. area. The band consists of Gabe Jaar on lead vocals, Rohan Enamandra on guitar and backing vocals, Brandon Jones on guitar, Clare Raiguel on bass guitar, and Max Gilder on drums. Gabe Jaar and John Martin originally started Watersdeep as an acoustic duo, playing covers on their local college radio. After a few months of writing music and playing live radio gigs and open mic nights around their college campus, Gabe and John made their way into the local music scene by playing local venues all across the DMV. Their debut EP Sunken Feelings came out on December 21st, 2016. Around the summer of 2017, John stepped down as the lead vocalist for Watersdeep, leaving Gabe to continue Watersdeep as a solo acoustic project. In 2018, Rohan stepped up as a fill in bassist, which quickly led to his permanent position in the band. As Gabe and Rohan recruited the rest of Watersdeep's members, Rohan switched to guitar. The group released their third studio release, titled "Trust Issues", in January 2020. Their latest release, "A Distant Memory", has an old school vibe with a modern metal twist. The group now boasts two 7 string guitars, expanding upon their original vision with room for plenty of musical experimentation. | #259: Blue Ridge Rock Festival Rising Talent, Dying Oath! | 07 Sep 2021 | 00:51:13
This episode is by far the most emotional I have ever been on a show. I won't lie, but I break down and I do very hard. However thanks to Dying Oath, the moments got easier. I want to thank Mindy and the Guys in Dying Oath for being there when I needed them most. Due to the emotion of this episode I am bringing it to you without commercial interruption. Dying Oath plays Friday at Blue Ridge Rock Fest on The Clinic Stage. Dying Oath may be new to the scene, but it has been in the works for quite some time... The band originated with many different members. Through time and tryouts, they finally managed to put together the right musicians with the right amount of heart, drive, and dedication to push the project to new heights. Originating from Rural Retreat, a small farm town in Southwest Virginia, the band has seen its share of hardships and struggles. Just finding members who met all of necessary criteria took over a year to accomplish. Nonetheless, Dying Oath has proven that although the area is dominated by Country and Bluegrass, that Metalcores crunchy rhythms and sweeping melodic leads accompanied by a combination of delicate clean and hardcore vocals, can indeed succeed to some extent. The members of Dying Oath include: Mindy Jackson - Hardcore vocals Josh Hagee - Lead Guitar Jeb Baxley - Clean Vocals Ryan Endicott - Rhythm Guitar Gage Freeman - Percussionist Ryan Matney - Bass Guitar In an effort to showcase some of the material that the band had been working on meticulously for the past several months, Lead Guitarist Josh Hagee decided to pick up the gear necessary to make rough recordings of their tracks and jump on a local event happening in Rural Retreat. Although the tracks were much less that studio quality, the fans of the local scene really connected with what they heard. This combined with a performance at "Rock Retreat III" hosted by DMP Presents and organized by Adam Seelbach (Inferior Design), launched the band into a status they never expected. Dying Oath continues to push the envelope of the local metal community with the support of many other local acts and endorsements from Maverick, Hellfire Radio, Alloy X and Alloy Radio, Dirtbag Clothing, an Artist Development program with Will Baker of Eye to Eye Records and Hollow Intent, and an unheard of partnership with a Haunt Scene podcast known as Haunted Honeymooners.
