Why 70% of Kids Quit Sports by 13 & How Parents Can Stop Killing the Joy of the Game featuring Jonathan Carone11 Dec 202500:55:08

If you're a parent with a kid in youth sports—rec, competitive, or full-blown travel—today's episode will hit home. I sit down with Jonathan Carone, creator of Healthy Sports Parents, for a powerful conversation about what youth sports have become, why burnout is skyrocketing, and how well-meaning parents (including me in the early years) unknowingly make the experience more stressful for their kids.

We break down shocking stats—like why 70% of kids quit sports by age 13, why travel leagues are burning families out, and how overtraining is causing injuries in 9-, 10-, and 11-year-olds. Jonathan brings immense wisdom about the car ride home, sideline behavior, when to step in with coaches, and how to raise confident, resilient athletes without crushing the joy of the game.

Timeline Summary:

[0:00] The surprising reason most kids quit sports by age 13.

[2:14] Larry shares his own evolution from "obnoxious sideline dad" to quiet encourager.

[3:41] Introducing guest Jonathan Carone of Healthy Sports Parents.

[4:10] Why travel sports are wrecking family time and burning kids out.

[4:40] The truth about scholarships and NIL fantasies.

[5:00] How the car ride home can make or break a kid's love for the game.

[6:04] The pressure kids feel once sports stop being fun.

[7:04] Why rec leagues are disappearing—and why that matters.

[8:29] How travel sports exploded over the last 25 years.

[10:25] A realistic look at what travel sports demand from families.

[12:09] Early onset injuries from overscheduling and year-round seasons.

[14:21] Real-life stories of parents whose kids never get a break.

[16:06] Why travel sports can destroy family dinners and family culture.

[17:05] The fear-based mindset driving parents to overcommit.

[19:47] The burnout cycle and why most kids stop enjoying the sport.

[20:05] The psychology behind parents who push too hard.

[21:13] Self-love vs. self-glory and how they influence parenting.

[22:29] The myth of scholarships and how rare they really are.

[23:24] How unhealthy pressure destroys a child's love for physical activity.

[24:13] Why running became punishment for our generation.

[26:33] Protecting kids' mental health in the digital age with Bark.

[31:43] What parents should be doing on the sidelines.

[34:36] The car ride home: three things you should ALWAYS say.

[35:42] When and how to give feedback the right way.

[38:44] Using a 5-to-1 positivity ratio to help kids grow.

[41:22] Being an "obnoxious encourager."

[43:33] The power of tone and why it changes everything.

[45:04] When coaches only play to win—and your kid never gets in.

[47:04] Teaching kids to advocate for themselves, age by age.

[49:20] How ADHD affects emotional regulation in sports.

[53:14] The long-tail impact of how we parent through sports.

[54:18] Generational change starts with how we show up today.

Five Key Takeaways
  1. Kids quit because the game stops being fun—not because of screens, school, or injuries. Pressure from adults is the biggest culprit.
  2. Travel sports demand 6–15 hours per week before adding training or lessons, often at the cost of family dinners and downtime.
  3. Overuse injuries are exploding in kids as young as 9 due to year-round seasons and lack of rest.
  4. Parents often push due to fear, self-validation, or scholarship fantasies, even though less than 5% of athletes ever receive any scholarship money.
  5. The car ride home should NEVER be coaching time. The only things kids need to hear are: "I loved watching you play," "Where do you want to eat?" and "What do you want to listen to?"

Digital Predators Are Targeting Our Kids, Here's How We Can Protect Them10 Dec 202500:21:17

In this solo December episode, I continue a month-long series dedicated to educating parents about the real dangers our kids face online. After last week's story about Adam Tate, today I share two more real cases—one involving sextortion and another involving swatting—that every parent needs to understand. These aren't rare events. They're happening quickly, quietly, and often right under our noses while our kids sit in their bedrooms playing games like Roblox, Fortnite, and more.

You'll hear the heartbreaking story of 17-year-old Ryan Lass from San Jose, who took his own life within hours of being extorted by an overseas criminal network. Then we break down the tragic case of Andrew Finch, a 28-year-old father of two who was killed after a swatting prank triggered a full SWAT response to the wrong house. Both stories highlight how dangerous the digital world has become—and why we must be proactive, aware, and deeply involved in protecting our kids' online lives.

Timeline Summary:

[0:00] Introduction

[1:02] Why December episodes are focused on online safety and protecting kids.

[1:50] Recap of last week's episode about Adam Tate and the Sean Ryan interview.

[2:32] Why sinister online activity is escalating and why parents must stay informed.

[3:02] Introducing two new stories: a sextortion case and a swatting case.

[3:48] Explanation of "swatting" and why even young kids are now doing it.

[4:48] Beginning Ryan Lass's story — a high school senior extorted online.

[5:38] How a predator posed as a woman and launched a rapid blackmail attack.

[6:07] FBI findings and identification of the international criminal ring.

[7:41] Why Ryan's case matters: he was targeted, not reckless.

[8:37] How modern predators manipulate teens using panic and pressure.

[9:02] Parents' blind spots about who kids are connected to online.

[10:17] Reminder that kids are connected to global predators—not just friends.

[11:03] Introduction to Andrew Finch's swatting case.

[12:06] The false 911 call describing a violent hostage situation.

[12:57] How Andrew Finch was shot despite having no involvement.

[14:01] Why swatting is deadly—and how it grew out of gaming communities.

[15:39] The seriousness of online conflict and its real-world consequences.

[16:33] How swatting and predator activity now infiltrate gaming platforms.

[16:54] Why Bark is one of the most effective tools for monitoring kids' devices.

[17:19] The need for proactive online supervision—like helmets for digital life.

[18:18] A recent incident with my own son that Bark helped me catch early.

[19:09] The urgency of protecting our kids from online predators.

[19:32] Directing listeners to the show notes and resources at thedadedge.com/1412.

[20:10] Additional resources including PenTester, YouTube links, and conversation guides.

[20:27] Free "Conversations for the Car" PDF for kids ages 5–18.

[20:45] Encouragement for parents: we fight this fight together.

Five Key Takeaways
  1. Predators are organized, trained, and global. Kids on gaming systems are interacting with far more than just "friends."
  2. Sextortion happens extremely fast. In Ryan's case, the window from first contact to death was only hours.
  3. Swatting is no longer just a gaming prank—it's deadly. The Andrew Finch tragedy shows how quickly it can turn fatal.
  4. Parents must stay vigilant, informed, and engaged. Safety now requires ongoing conversations and digital monitoring.
  5. Tools like Bark can save lives. Monitoring texts, DMs, and online chats can catch danger long before it escalates.

Are you taking ownership of your business, relationships, health, and future? Or are you blaming things outside yourself for a stagnant life? What is preventing you from living as your best self?

It's the ego.

Why Men Are Better Together06 Jun 201900:45:21

Today I'm sitting down with everyday dad and alliance member, Mike. He's having a great time now being a father, but it wasn't always this way.

Mike is the father of an 8 year old daughter and a 5 year old son. When his son was first born, he couldn't understand why he didn't feel a connection to his baby. He thought something was wrong with him but was afraid to tell anyone about it. As his kids grew, his noticed his patience was thin, and he was worried he'd end up being "the dad that yelled a lot." He was also afraid that he wouldn't have all the answers to the questions his kids asked, and he suffered chronic anxiety. This was a huge catalyst for change.

One of the hardest things for men to do is ask for help, but Mike was tired of doing life on his own. He didn't want to lean on his wife for everything either. That's when he made himself a priority and joined The Dad Edge Alliance.

Listen to Mike's journey, and why men are better together!

Raising Financially Responsible Kids23 May 201900:34:05

Money is a generational issue. Most of us weren't taught it, our parents weren't taught it, and our grandparents weren't taught it. Unless we break the pattern, our kids will have the same issues, overspending on credit cards and not investing enough to provide a secure future.

What lessons are you teaching your kids about money?

What about personal accountability, savings, and investing?

How do they see you spend money?

There is a balance between money management and enjoying life. We don't have to teach a scarcity mindset for our kids to be money smart.

Today we talk to a special guest who tells us his dad's approach to raising financially responsible kids and how it made him leagues ahead of his peers of the same age.

Turning Shame and Regret into Power16 May 201900:38:09

All of us at some time in our lives will face a time of darkness and despair. It could be financial ruin, divorce, a health crisis, or a shameful mistake. Chances are that when we are struggling through a difficult time, we won't let anyone know about it. When someone asks us how we are, we'll say, "I'm fine."

In this case FINE means:

  • F*cked up
  • Insecure
  • Neurotic and
  • Emotional

We tend to take our frustrations out on those around us, blind to the damage we are causing. Addictions can take over when we feel like there is no other way to calm the chaos.

We're excited to bring Joe Burnham back on the show. He is a Dad Edge Alliance mastermind member who was on the podcast previously to talk about his life after getting arrested in a prostitution sting. Today he tells us how no one is beyond redemption and that it is possible to recover from a downfall by turning shame and regret into power.

Master the Key: How to Free Your Potential with Mike Flynn13 May 201901:00:28

Everyone is talking about finding your "why" or your purpose in life. The idea is that once you know your why, everything else falls into place. But what if you don't know your why or how to find it? What do you do when you realize you are trapped in a story that you would have never written for yourself? How do you become who you were created to be?

Today we have Mike Flynn back on the show. He is the host of the Impact Entrepreneur podcast and has just released his new book, Master the Key: A Story to Free Your Potential, Find Meaning and Live Life on Purpose.

Mike is going to teach us the 4 elements of ownership, why me must learn to sit in silence with ourselves, and how to find our why. He also reveals the most important key to stepping into our destiny—to believe we are worthy of it.

What I Learned About Motivation That Saved My Marriage18 Apr 202500:26:43

How often do we find ourselves waiting for motivation to magically appear, especially in our closest relationships?

I've been there too, more times than I'd like to admit. But here's the hard truth I've learned: motivation isn't a reliable spark; it's something we create.

In this deeply personal episode, I'm getting raw and honest about the reality of motivation in marriage. I'm sharing behind-the-scenes moments from my own journey with Jessica, the times I let motivation slip, and the small, intentional actions that helped me rebuild connection and intimacy. It's not about grand gestures; it's about showing up even when you don't "feel" like it.

Become the best husband and leader you can: www.thedadedge.com/mastermind

In this episode, I'll explore:

  • Why relying on "feeling" motivated is a recipe for disconnection in your marriage.
  • The insidious ways that distance can quietly creep into even the strongest relationships.
  • The power of small, consistent acts of love to reignite intimacy and connection.
  • Practical strategies to prioritize your spouse, even when life feels overwhelming.
  • How to break the cycle of waiting for motivation and start leading with action.

Here's what research supports about the power of action and intention:

  • Studies show that couples who engage in regular, small acts of kindness report a 28% increase in relationship satisfaction.
  • Research indicates that setting specific, shared goals increases the likelihood of improved communication and intimacy by 35%.
  • Prioritizing quality time has been shown to reduce feelings of loneliness in relationships by 20%.

If you're ready to stop waiting for motivation and start actively building a stronger, more connected marriage, this episode is for you. Let's take that first step together.

Digital Minimalism with Cal Newport06 May 201900:58:10

Today's show is about distraction. Tech can be our best friend and worst enemy. Our devices are no longer normal telephones. They've become our constant companions. Texts, emails, social media and loads of content compete for our attention every hour of the day. We are more distracted and overwhelmed than ever before. It not only affects our work life but can do irreparable damage to our family life as well. Will our kids grow up missing their parents who are always on their phone?

Cal Newport is a bestselling author and the father of three boys. You won't find him on any social media, because he doesn't have any. He the author of six books, including, most recently, the New York Times bestseller, Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World.

Cal is going to tell us how tech is engineered to keep us on our phones and steal time away from our lives. He also talks about how it affects our memory and anxiety levels. Cal teaches us what boundaries to set for screen time with our kids and gives us a 30-Day plan to step away from tech and rebuild our digital lives in a way that serves us.

Don't waste another minute being distracted from the things that are most important to you.

How to Parent Kids with Anxiety and Depression01 May 201900:43:49

More kids are suffering from anxiety and depression than in any other previous generation. What is it like to raise kids who suffer from anxiety and depression? How can partners align without pointing fingers and being hurtful?

I went on the Parenting Survival Podcast to talk about the struggles I had parenting my son who has anxiety issues. Most dads are ill equipped to manage this problem, and a special skill set is required along with understanding and patience. I discuss how to use emotional validation and tactical empathy to connect and communicate with our kids as well as our wives. I also give advice on how ladies can better communicate with their men without putting them on the defensive.

A Father's Journey Inward18 Apr 201900:32:23

On Thursdays we like to interview every day dads. Today we talk to Dad Edge Alliance member, Ben. His mission was to become the best father he could be to his 6 year old son and a 4 year old daughter. He knew that they were picking up on what he did, not what he said, but sometimes he had a hard time being calm. After struggling with anxiety most of his life, he realized he needed to find a way to stay patient, especially when the kids were crying and things were stressful with work.

Ben had to go inward to face his flaws, to confront the truth about who he was and who he wanted to be. This unlocked the journey to living his life according to his values, to staying calm through the storm by accepting others as they are and letting go of the need to control.

How to Become a Master Lover with Intimacy Coach Elisa Popescu15 Apr 201901:20:29

Warning: Dads, this episode is explicit. Make sure you're not with the kids while listening.

Today, we are going to talk about how to become a Master Lover.

After we get married and have kids, we step into the role of dad. Our wives go into mothering mode, and we lose the all-consuming passion that we felt in the beginning of the relationship.

Elisa Popescu is an Intimacy and Relationship coach and the creator of The Master Lover Program. She is going to tell us the 5 Core Needs of a Woman and how we can use them to ignite our wives' sexual energy. She also identifies the 5 Core Needs of Men and how being aware of them will help us take the lead and get back to that primal bedroom experience we crave.

Idea Overwhelm: How to Start Taking Action11 Apr 201900:20:50

Today is the 3 year anniversary for Thursday Throwdown and the 4th year anniversary since the launch of The Dad Edge/Good Dad Project Podcast! Thanks to all our fans for making the show such a wild success.

Today's show is about all you podcast listeners. We're calling out the content zombies.

What is a content zombie? Those of us who binge on podcasts, listen to tons of audiobooks, download all the free guides, read all the articles, and watch all the videos on how to improve our lives, but never put the information we learn into practice. Instead of choosing one idea and sticking with it, we just keep sucking up more content. No matter how good it is, it's useless to us because we are not implementing it.

In this episode, we talk about how to choose the best idea and start taking action so you can avoid stagnation and always be moving forward in life. Don't be a content zombie!

This problem is rampant and out of control. It's not a matter of if. It's a matter of when. Arm yourself with everything you need to know about identity theft in this episode.

Marriage Partnership in Action04 Apr 201900:15:00

Last month for Thursday Throwdown, we covered the 4 Elements of a Legendary Marriage with Lance Salazar. Over 4 weeks, he broke it down into: The Individual, The Partnership, Becoming Friends, and Becoming Lovers. Today I'm going to talk about the marriage partnership in action.

I applied a quasi business-like approach to working with my wife to make sure we were on the same page when it came to responsibilities. This included a weekly meeting where we "frontloaded" and planned everything in advance from who was taking the kids to school to what we were having for dinner. We even synchronized our schedule in a Google calendar. Is it worth doing all this tedious planning? How does it benefit our marriage?

Listen and find out!

Is work-life balance an unattainable myth? Most of us have tried everything to find out a way to evenly distribute our time and energy across work, life, and family. Many of us may have also discovered that this is one of the most difficult things to achieve. It almost seems impossible. But it's not.

Today's guest is James Sudakow. He is the father of four kids and the author of Out of the Blur: A Delirious Dad's Search for the Holy Grail of Work-Life Balance. He used to suffer from superhero syndrome, trying to be everything to everyone all the time. Eventually, he realized that he wasn't showing up in the way that he wanted to at home or at work and came up with his own plan to analyze his behavior and change his ways.

In this episode, James Sudakow talks about the superhero syndrome and outlines the common traps we fall into when it comes to prioritizing our to do list. He gives practical solutions for breaking common habits that suck our time and energy and shows us that a sane, productive, fulfilling life is not as mysterious as we think.
