The Hardest Stitch Isn't the One You Think | The Crochet Stitch #1525 Jul 202600:07:24

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View this week's newsletter: The Hardest Stitch Isn't the One You Think.

If you've ever looked at a ball of yarn and wondered...

"What if I mess this up?"

You're not alone.

This week we're talking about one of the biggest obstacles nearly every crocheter faces, not learning stitches, choosing yarn, or reading patterns...

It's simply making that very first chain.

Whether you're picking up a crochet hook for the very first time, starting a challenging new pattern, or returning to crochet after a long break, this episode is a reminder that you don't have to feel ready before you begin.

You'll hear why beginner mistakes aren't failures, they're some of the best teachers you'll ever have.

Every loose stitch teaches tension.

Every crooked edge teaches stitch count.

Every project teaches something you'll carry into the next one.

We'll also ask this week's community question:

What's stopping you from starting your next crochet project?

  • Fear of making mistakes?
  • Confusing patterns?
  • Not having the right yarn?
  • Waiting for "next weekend"?
  • Or something else entirely?

Plus, we'll highlight one of Yarn Over Hook's favorite beginner resourcesโ€”the Crochet Stitch Libraryโ€”filled with tutorials, stitch guides, inspiration, and educational resources designed to help crocheters build confidence one stitch at a time.

This week's featured episode from Exploration Crochet dives even deeper into overcoming the fear of the first chain and reminds us that every experienced crocheter started exactly where beginners are today.

We'll also cover everything happening this week across Yarn Over Hook, including:

  • ๐Ÿงถ The Great Summer Mosaic CAL Part 6 (Zesty Citrus)
  • ๐ŸŽ‰ The 200th episode of Crochet & Chat
  • ๐Ÿงบ Summer Stash Bash recap
  • ๐Ÿ‘• Luther Top Check-in
  • ๐ŸŸช Square Up Saturday
  • ๐ŸŽ ReRe's Summer Stash Bash WIP Bag Giveaway

We'll finish with a reminder every crocheter needs to hear:

You don't become a crocheter because your first project is perfect.

You become a crocheter because you begin.

What Does Your Favorite Yarn Color Say About You? | The Crochet Stitch #1417 Jul 202600:09:49

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: What Does Your Favorite Yarn Color Say About You?

Before you choose your next skeinโ€ฆ

Pause for a second.

Have you ever noticed you almost always gravitate toward the same colors?

Maybe your shelves are filled with soft sage greens.

Maybe every blanket somehow becomes rainbow.

Maybe your favorite color changes every season.

Color is one of the most personal choices we make as crocheters. Two makers can create the exact same pattern using the exact same yarn and end up with projects that feel completely different simply because of the colors they choose.

In this episode, we're exploring how color influences the feeling of a crochet project, sharing simple ways to make choosing color palettes less overwhelming, and introducing the newest free Yarn Over Hook Cheat Sheet: Choosing a Color Palette.

You'll also hear about our newest community personality quiz, "What Does Your Favorite Yarn Color Say About You?", where you'll discover whether you're:

๐ŸŒˆ The Color Adventurer

๐ŸŒฟ The Nature Maker

โ˜๏ธ The Cozy Minimalist

โœจ The Creative Mixer

Plus, we celebrate another milestone in the Summer Stash Bash with 1,381 donated soap sacks, preview Part 5 of the Great Summer Mosaic CAL, and look ahead to another week of crochet shows, Crochet & Chat, Summer Stash Bash with Stitches, the Luther Top Crochet Along, and Square Up Saturday.

Whether you love bold complementary colors, calming monochromatic palettes, earthy neutrals, or joyful rainbow combinations, this episode will help you approach your next project with a little more confidence and hopefully a little less second-guessing.

Summer Stash Bash Is Here: Turn Your Yarn Stash Into Kindness16 May 202600:04:33

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: Summer Stash Bash Is Here: Turn Your Yarn Stash Into Kindness ๐Ÿงผ

This week, weโ€™re kicking off something especially meaningful: the 2026 Summer Stash Bash, a Yarn Over Hook community crochet challenge in partnership with S.A.C.K., which stands for Supporting A Community with Kindness. Together, weโ€™re inviting crocheters to turn yarn from their stashes into handmade comfort, practical care, and global goodwill.

In this episode, we share how Summer Stash Bash supports S.A.C.K.โ€™s mission to provide essential toiletries to underserved communities. Many people cannot use government assistance programs like SNAP to purchase hygiene products, which makes donations like soap, shampoo, and other toiletries especially meaningful.

The goal for this yearโ€™s challenge is simple and powerful: help the Yarn Over Hook community crochet and donate 1,000 soap sacks worldwide. Each soap sack should include a bar of soap, turning a handmade crochet project into a practical care item for someone who needs it.

We also preview this weekโ€™s Yarn Over Hook livestream schedule, including Crochet & Chat with the Checkered Tote by MitchesGetStitchesUS, Stitches! with another round of Just Get the Pattern, a members-only Rosa Tee session by Lola Crochets, and Square Up Saturday with crochet charts and granny squares.

Plus, we celebrate the official launch of The Crochet Stitch Podcast, the new weekly audio companion to The Stitch newsletter. Each week, Sammi Jai will bring you a quick audio version featuring Yarn Over Hook updates, upcoming livestreams, crochet events, community highlights, featured resources, and simple ways to create, learn, and connect.

Whether youโ€™re joining a livestream, starting your first soap sack, catching a replay, or listening while you crochet through your latest WIP, weโ€™re so glad youโ€™re here.

Celebrate Local Yarn Store Day | April 2516 May 202600:04:06

Welcome to this special edition of The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: Celebrate Local Yarn Store Day Today ๐Ÿงถ

In this episode, weโ€™re celebrating Local Yarn Store Day, happening Saturday, April 25, 2026. This annual event is all about showing love to independently owned yarn shops and the creative communities they help support. For crocheters, it is also a meaningful opportunity to visit your favorite local yarn store, discover something new, and help make crochet more visible in the broader fiber world.

We talk about why local yarn stores matter, not just as places to buy yarn, but as gathering spaces, learning spaces, and community spaces. Many shops celebrate the day with special events, trunk shows, giveaways, exclusive patterns, yarn launches, and community stitching time.

Youโ€™ll also hear simple ways to make the most of Local Yarn Store Day, including visiting a shop near you, asking about crochet-friendly events or classes, bringing a current project, buying yarn or tools, sharing the shop on social media, or inviting another crocheter to come along.

Whether you are stopping in to say hello, picking up supplies for your next project, or sharing your favorite local yarn shop with the Yarn Over Hook community, your visit matters.

Local Yarn Store Day is a beautiful reminder that crochet is community.

Grab your hook, visit your favorite LYS, and celebrate the people, places, and makers that keep crochet connected.

Yarn Over Hook helps crocheters create, learn, and connect.

Yarnbow Resin Hooks, Popcorn & This Week in Crochet | April 2016 May 202600:03:28

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: The Crochet Stitch: Hooks, Popcorn, and This Week in Crochet

This week, weโ€™re talking crochet hooks, whimsical makes, community updates, and whatโ€™s happening across Yarn Over Hook.

In this episode, we share a community review from longtime Yarn Over Hook member Kelli, who tested a Yarnbow resin crochet hook in size J / 6.0 mm. Kelli found the hook strong, sturdy, and smooth with bulky yarn, especially compared to some resin hooks that can feel fragile. While it did not replace her favorite metal hooks, she found it to be a dependable and attractive option she would happily use again.

We also highlight Sammiโ€™s latest crochet replay, featuring a whimsical popcorn project inspired by a Disney Sea popcorn bucket. Itโ€™s a cozy, playful crochet session with lo-fi vibes, creative stitching, and a project that feels delightfully unexpected.

Plus, we preview this weekโ€™s Yarn Over Hook live schedule, including Letโ€™s Crochet & Chat, #WIPWednesday, and Square Up Saturday, with projects ranging from the Festival Blanket to crochet popcorn and granny square chart reading.

Youโ€™ll also hear about the latest episode of Exploration Crochet, hosted by ReRe: Yarn Bombing: From Door Handle to Wall Street, along with a quick community board reminder for pattern testers, crochet events, yarn crawls, and maker patterns.

Whether youโ€™re looking for a cozy crochet replay, a thoughtful hook review, a new podcast listen, or a reason to join the next livestream, weโ€™re glad youโ€™re here.

View the Newsletter: Take the โ€œWhatโ€™s in Your WIP Bag?โ€ Challenge

Before you listen any further, grab the WIP bag closest to you.

Do not clean it.

Do not organize it.

Do not remove the mystery receipt, loose yarn tails, or project you forgot was in there.

This week, we are opening our project bags and taking an honest inventory.

In this episode, we introduce the โ€œWhatโ€™s in Your WIP Bag?โ€ challenge, where crocheters can calculate their score based on the tools, supplies, yarn tails, backup projects, and mystery items currently hiding inside their project bag.

We also talk about what your score might say about your WIP bag style, whether you are a WIP Bag Minimalist, a Prepared Maker, a Crochet Problem Solver, or fully operating out of a Traveling Yarn Room.

Plus, we introduce the newest Yarn Over Hook community personality quiz: What Kind of WIP Bag Crocheter Are You?

Are you:

The Light Packer?

The Prepared Project Planner?

The Cozy Crocheter?

The Mobile Yarn Studio?

There is only one way to find out.

This week, we are also celebrating 1,290 donated soap sacks for the Summer Stash Bash soap sack challenge, continuing the Great Summer Mosaic CAL, and previewing a full week of Yarn Over Hook shows, including Crochet & Chat, Summer Stash Bash with Stitches, a YouTube Members Exclusive, and a special guest episode with Drew about learning how to spin yarn.

So open your bag, count your points, laugh at what you find, and remember that every WIP bag tells a story.

Free Crochet Cheat Sheets for Your Next Project | The Crochet Stitch #1204 Jul 202600:08:21

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: Save This: Free Crochet Cheat Sheets for Your Next Project

This week, weโ€™re talking about the little crochet moments that can make a project feel more confusing than it needs to be: pattern abbreviations, chart symbols, yarn fiber choices, hook sizes, gauge, and color palettes.

That is exactly why Yarn Over Hook created the new Crochet Cheat Sheet Hub.

The Crochet Cheat Sheet Hub is a free collection of Yarn Over Hook resources designed to help crocheters feel more confident before they begin, while they make, and when they are helping another crochet friend figure something out.

In this episode, we walk through the new free cheat sheet hub, including resources for reading crochet patterns, understanding crochet chart symbols, choosing yarn fibers, substituting yarn, and building intentional color palettes.

We also share this weekโ€™s community question:

Which crochet moment makes you reach for help first?

A. Pattern abbreviations

B. Chart symbols

C. Picking the right yarn

D. Choosing colors

E. All of the above, respectfully

Plus, we look ahead to the week of July 6 on Yarn Over Hook, including Crochet & Chat, Summer Stash Bash with Stitches, the Viscountess Top members-only project, and Square Up Saturday.

Whether you are learning to read your first crochet pattern, practicing crochet charts, choosing yarn from your stash, or deciding whether those colors really do go together, this episode is here to help.

Could You Write a Crochet Pattern? What Makes a Good Pattern21 Jun 202600:07:55

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: Could You Write a Crochet Pattern? Letโ€™s Talk About It

This week, weโ€™re talking about something that can feel surprisingly intimidating: writing crochet patterns.

Not just following them.

Not just saving them.

Not just saying, โ€œI could probably figure that out.โ€

Actually writing one.

Recently, Romanโ€™s Skinny Scarfโ„ข became an official Yarn Over Hook pattern. And yes, it is technically a pattern made mostly of chains. But it also became something bigger.

It started as a community joke. Then it became a call to arms. Then it became a reminder that sometimes the first pattern you write does not have to be complicated to be meaningful.

So this week, weโ€™re asking: What makes a crochet pattern good? And what stops more crocheters from writing one?

In this episode, we talk about why a good crochet pattern does not have to be fancy, 40 pages long, perfectly photographed, or filled with complicated stitches. But it should help another maker feel supported.

Because a good pattern is not just a set of instructions. It is a guide. It is a little voice saying, โ€œYouโ€™ve got this. Hereโ€™s what comes next.โ€

We also invite you to take this weekโ€™s Yarn Over Hook quiz and find out what kind of crochet pattern person you are. Are you The Pattern Follower, The Pattern Modifier, The Pattern Collector, The Pattern Tester, or The Pattern Editor?

Then we look ahead at this weekโ€™s Yarn Over Hook livestream schedule, including tips for crocheting blankets in the summer, Summer Stash Bash with Stitches Featured Pattern No. 4, a YouTube Members Exclusive session continuing the Viscountess Top by MJโ€™s Off The Hook Designs, and Square Up Saturday with mystery granny squares and community choice.

This weekโ€™s latest video features Mosaic Sunglasses by Remington Lane Crochet and five things Sammi has learned so far about mosaic crochet.

We also celebrate Furls Crochet Hooksโ€™ 14th birthday and spotlight Romanโ€™s Skinny Scarfโ„ข as an official Yarn Over Hook pattern. It is simple, mostly chains, and somehow full of community lore, beginner-friendly confidence, and heart.

Writing a crochet pattern can feel intimidating because it asks you to share not just what you made, but how you think. It asks you to slow down, explain your choices, count your stitches, and support someone you may never meet.

That is generous work.

Maybe your first pattern will be a blanket. Maybe it will be a bag. Maybe it will be a granny square. Maybe it will be 503 chains and a dream.

Whatever it is, we are glad you are here.

Keep creating. Keep learning. Keep connecting.

Yarn Over Hook helps crocheters create, learn, and connect.

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

This week, crochet is taking us to Wollongong, New South Wales, as we spotlight Crochet Guild Australiaโ€™s 2026 Crochet Convention, happening from 19โ€“21 June 2026.

Centered around the theme Made to Last, this three-day convention brings together crocheters, fiber artists, educators, and makers for workshops, a yarn market, guest tutors, and community connection. The featured educator lineup includes Toni Lipsey of TL Yarn Crafts, Krisztine Anna Edรถmรฉr of K.A.M.E. Crochet, Rhondda Mol of Oombawka Design Crochet, Arunima Goel of KnitterKnotter, Abbey of Abbeymade, Jenny King, and Linda Dean.

We also ask this weekโ€™s community question: which crochet situation would you rather survive? Losing at yarn chicken with only three stitches left, discovering mismatched dye lots halfway through, frogging three rows, weaving in 47 ends, finding a knot at the worst possible moment, or realizing you used the wrong hook size?

Plus, we share this weekโ€™s Yarn Over Hook livestreams, including Crochet & Chat with the French Market Bag, Summer Stash Bash with Stitches, a YouTube Members exclusive project, and Square Up Saturday with granny squares and crochet charts.

We also highlight the latest video, Joining a Fun Summer Mosaic CAL, and feature Yarn Me Calm, a fibre art studio based in Portarlington, Victoria, on Australiaโ€™s beautiful Bellarine Peninsula.

Whether crochet shows up for you as a convention, a CAL, a market bag, a granny square, a soap sack, or ten quiet minutes with your hook and yarn, it all counts.

Grab your project and join us for this weekโ€™s stitch.

Yarn Over Hook helps crocheters create, learn, and connect.

Happy Worldwide Crochet in Public Day | The Crochet Stitch Podcast13 Jun 202600:04:18

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: Happy Worldwide Crochet in Public Day

Today is Worldwide Crochet in Public Day, and we are celebrating one of the simplest, most joyful ways to make crochet visible: taking your current project somewhere out in the world.

You do not need a big plan.

You do not need a perfect project.

You do not need an official event.

You just need your yarn, your hook, and a place where crochet can be seen.

In this special episode, we talk about what Worldwide Crochet in Public Day is, why it matters, and how crocheters can participate from almost anywhere. Maybe you are stitching at a local yarn shop, a coffee shop table, a library chair, a park bench, or your favorite crochet-friendly community space. Wherever you are, one crocheter in public still counts.

We also invite you to take the Yarn Over Hook Crochet Spot Quiz to find your perfect public crochet personality. Are you a Library Stitcher, Park Picnic Maker, Cafรฉ Crocheter, Local Yarn Shop Loyalist, or Creative Wildcard?

Then we share simple ways to make the most of Crochet in Public Day, including visiting a local yarn shop, bringing a portable project to a park, inviting a friend for a mini sit-and-stitch, checking local event listings, or creating your own small crochet moment.

We would also love to hear where you are stitching today. Share your project, your setup, your yarn shop visit, your cafรฉ table, or your favorite public crochet spot. Tag Yarn Over Hook on Instagram and invite a crochet friend to take the quiz too.

Worldwide Crochet in Public Day is a beautiful reminder that crochet is community. Every stitch, every conversation, every curious question, and every project shared helps make crochet more visible in the world.

So grab your yarn, take your crochet somewhere public if you are able, and let the craft be seen.

Keep creating. Keep learning. Keep connecting.

Yarn Over Hook helps crocheters create, learn, and connect.

62 Soap Sacks and Counting: Help Us Reach 1,00031 May 202600:05:50

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: 62 Soap Sacks and Counting: Help Us Reach 1,000

This week, Summer Stash Bash is officially underway, and the Yarn Over Hook community has already created 62 soap sacks toward our goal of 1,000 handmade soap sacks, each donated with a bar of soap.

That means we are on the board, the hooks are moving, and every finished sack is helping turn extra yarn into something useful, handmade, and deeply human.

In this episode, we share the latest Summer Stash Bash community count, invite you to join the challenge, and talk about how small crochet projects can become a shared act of creativity, care, and kindness. Grab your cotton yarn, make a soap sack, include a bar of soap, and help us move closer to 1,000.

We also ask this weekโ€™s community question: Which crochet stitch do you enjoy making the most? From granny stitch and moss stitch to shell stitch, bobble stitch, puff stitch, and Tunisian simple stitch, we want to know what stitch you are currently loving.

Then we look ahead at this weekโ€™s Yarn Over Hook livestream schedule, including more progress on the Pandoraโ€™s Box Blanket by Mickey from The Crochet Crowd, the first featured Summer Stash Bash with Stitches! soap sack pattern, a YouTube Members Exclusive session continuing the Rosa Tee by Lola Crochets, and Square Up Saturday with mystery granny squares, color play, and crochet chart reading.

This weekโ€™s latest video is all about Sammiโ€™s summer crochet wearable lineup, featuring the crochet wearables queued up for the season.

We also spotlight TL Yarn Crafts, the creative home of designer, instructor, and author Toni Lipsey. Known for modern crochet patterns, approachable teaching, and practical projects, TL Yarn Crafts is a valuable resource for crocheters looking for inspiration, confidence-building instruction, and beautiful things to make.

Plus, we celebrate the launch of the new Crochet Maker Language Tees in the Yarn Over Hook shop. Whether you are a peaceful Stitch Sage, a generous Heart Crafter, a joyful WIP Warrior, or a creative Pattern Alchemist, there is now a tee for your crochet personality.

Whether you are working on a soap sack, a blanket, a tee, a granny square, or your latest WIP, we are glad you are here.

Keep creating. Keep learning. Keep connecting.

Yarn Over Hook helps crocheters create, learn, and connect.

Summer Stash Bash Kickoff: Stash Yarn, Soap Sacks & Crochet Kindness24 May 202600:06:10

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: Summer Stash Bash is kicking off! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿงถ

This week, Summer Stash Bash is back, and weโ€™re turning stash yarn into kindness. Yarn Over Hook is partnering with S.A.C.K., which stands for Supporting A Community with Kindness, for a community challenge with one big goal: crochet and donate 1,000 soap sacks, each with a bar of soap, to local communities around the world.

In this episode, we share details about the Summer Stash Bash kickoff livestream happening Wednesday, May 27 at 1:30 PM PT, including a giveaway for two handcrafted resin crochet hooks from Yarnbow, a family-run business based in Austin, Texas known for handcrafted Glissando resin crochet hooks.

We also ask this weekโ€™s community question: What are your favorite stash-busting crochet projects? From soap sacks and granny squares to dishcloths, scrap blankets, amigurumi minis, and the yarn that has been waiting the longest in your stash, this is your chance to share what you love making when your stash gets a little too powerful.

Then we preview the full week at Yarn Over Hook, including a new blanket WIP with the Pandoraโ€™s Box Blanket by Mickey from The Crochet Crowd, the Summer Stash Bash with Stitches! Kickoff & Giveaway, a members-only Rosa Tee session by Lola Crochets, and Square Up Saturday with mystery granny squares, color play, crochet charts, and Claire Montgomerieโ€™s decks.

Plus, we highlight Sammiโ€™s latest video, Iโ€™m FINALLY Learning Tunisian Crochet!, for anyone who has had Tunisian crochet on their โ€œone day Iโ€™ll learn thatโ€ list. Trying something new can feel awkward at first, but that is part of the fun.

This weekโ€™s featured pattern maker is Remy A Crafty Hedgehog, created by Alexis Kavros, with playful crochet patterns, fiber art, creative storytelling, videos, community, and beginner-friendly crochet inspiration. We also spotlight the free Mini Jellyfish Crochet Pattern in the Yarn Over Hook marketplace.

We also share a new episode from Exploration Crochet, titled Crochetโ€™s Long History of Being Problematic โ€” to Somebody, a thoughtful listen for anyone interested in crochetโ€™s history, culture, and complexity beyond the hobby itself.

Whether you are joining Summer Stash Bash, working through a blanket WIP, learning Tunisian crochet, playing Name That Stitch, listening to Exploration Crochet, or simply crocheting a few quiet rows today, weโ€™re glad youโ€™re here.

Grab your cotton yarn, your favorite hook, and your summer crochet energy.

What Would You Tell Your Beginner Crochet Self? | May 17th19 May 202600:06:10

Welcome back to The Crochet Stitch, the weekly crochet podcast from Yarn Over Hook, the global home of crochet.

View the Newsletter: What would you tell your beginner crochet self?

This week, weโ€™re asking a simple but meaningful question:

What would you tell your beginner crochet self?

If you could go back and start your crochet journey again, what would you change? What would you keep the same? Would you worry less about perfect stitches, buy different yarn, try new techniques sooner, or simply remind yourself that every tangled skein and uneven row is part of learning?

In this episode, we reflect on the beginner crochet journey, the lessons we learn over time, and the little pieces of advice that can make the craft feel more joyful, less intimidating, and more connected.

We also share whatโ€™s happening across Yarn Over Hook, including community updates, crochet resources, upcoming events, shop submissions, and ways for makers to get involved. Whether youโ€™re joining a livestream, catching up on a replay, submitting an event, sharing a crochet-friendly shop, or working through your latest WIP, thereโ€™s a place for you here.

This episode is a reminder that crochet is not about being perfect from the beginning. Itโ€™s about learning, experimenting, making mistakes, finding your rhythm, and becoming part of a creative community along the way.

So grab your hook, think back to your first stitches, and join us for this weekโ€™s episode.

Yarn Over Hook helps crocheters create, learn, and connect.
