Seize the Tune (Part 1 of 2) | 07010 Sep 202300:34:26

Ladies and gentlemen of the musical realm, let me introduce you to a true musical dynamo – the one and only Grant J Ward!

From the tender age of 5, when most kids are still learning to tie their shoelaces, Grant’s heart was already resonating with the magic of music. A young boy, determined as ever, relentlessly pestering his non-musical parents for piano lessons. And after three years of his melodic persistence, at the age of 8, the piano became his gateway to a world of enchantment.

As he journeyed through primary and secondary school, the symphonic threads of his destiny wove a captivating tale. By the time he was 12, Grant’s creative spirit couldn’t be contained, and he began crafting his own harmonious stories through songwriting. At 14, he was already harmonizing with school choirs, his nimble fingers dancing across the piano keys in rehearsals and dazzling performances.

At the remarkable age of 15, he embarked on a new rhythm, sharing his musical wisdom with the world by teaching private piano lessons. And oh, the tunes he must have shared!

He’s lent his melodic genius to numerous esteemed institutions and projects, including collaborations with the likes of Antix Theatre Company, The Victorian College of the Arts, and the Australian Girls’ Choir. As a singer, songwriter, and composer, his portfolio reads like a lyrical adventure novel, with five stage musicals under his belt, including the enchanting ‘Café Butterfly’.

The infamous Spin Round collections have not only captured hearts but also taught us that music can indeed make the world go ’round.

And now, dear music teachers, it’s our great pleasure to introduce you to Grant J Ward, the orchestrator of inspiration!

Blending Medicine and Music (Part 1 of 2) | 06430 Jul 202300:28:55

Allow me to introduce you to a remarkable individual who effortlessly combines the worlds of medicine and music, Dr. Ryan Williams! Hailing from the prestigious University of Queensland School of Medicine, Ryan is not your ordinary doctor. While he excels in the field of general practice and medical education, he also holds a deep-rooted passion for music.

Ryan’s journey into the world of melodies began at the tender age of 8 when he first picked up the viola and piano. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, he later expanded his repertoire to include the flute, bassoon, and percussion during his high school years. With his diverse musical talents, Ryan became an integral part of the Queensland Youth Symphony, where he spent two years playing the viola under the guidance of the internationally renowned conductor, John Curro OAM. Together, they embarked on exhilarating tours to South Korea, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Germany, even culminating in a stunning performance at the World Expo 2000 in Hannover. Talk about a symphony of accomplishments!

In addition to his medical pursuits, he pursued undergraduate degrees in Arts and Education at the University of Queensland. Upon graduation, he found himself not only a doctor but also a German and science teacher at Ferny Grove State High School. Little did he know that this role would thrust him into the limelight of the instrumental music department at Ferny Grove, where his talents as a conductor shone bright. Leading several ensembles and collaborating with acclaimed pianist Brachi Tilles, he conducted the unforgettable performance of Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. Who knew medicine and music could harmonize so beautifully?

Ryan’s love for classical music goes hand in hand with his deep appreciation for European culture. As a true aficionado, he embarked on an exchange program in Frankfurt at the age of 17, immersing himself in the rich tapestry of the continent’s finest musical, artistic, and historical venues. His thirst for knowledge and passion for European languages earned him scholarships to study in Germany and Russia, allowing him to fully immerse himself in the culture that has shaped the great composers he admires.

Dr. Ryan Williams is not just a medical doctor or a talented musician—he’s a vibrant blend of both, seamlessly balancing his professional responsibilities as a GP and Medical Educator with his role as the conductor and artistic director of the Queensland Medical Orchestra since 2010. His dedication to both medicine and music is awe-inspiring, and his infectious enthusiasm brings joy to those around him.

Let’s give a resounding applause to the extraordinary Dr. Ryan Williams—a musical maestro who heals hearts both through his medical expertise and the captivating melodies he orchestrates.

Thriving in Challenging Schools: Building Relationships in Crisis | 15714 Sep 202500:14:35

Welcome back to Thriving in Challenging Schools. In our last episode, we looked at practical strategies to help you survive the day-to-day chaos. Today, we’re shifting the focus to something even more powerful: building relationships in crisis.

Because here’s the thing—sometimes your toughest students are also the ones most desperate for connection. I’ll never forget the Year 6 boy who asked me to marry him, or the one who swore he’d stolen and eaten the teacher’s pythons. These moments might sound funny—or completely outrageous—but behind them is the bigger question: How do we build trust and connection with kids who seem determined to push every boundary?

In this episode, we’re going to unpack three strategies to help you do just that:

  • How to strategically include your biggest troublemakers in ways that change the game.
  • How to meet kids where they are—rather than where we wish they were.
  • And why giving responsibility first can be the key to earning real respect.

So if you’re ready to turn some of your greatest challenges into surprising allies, let’s dive in.

REAL FINE Advice for Graduates | 05711 Jun 202300:24:33

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Crescendo Music Education Podcast, where today, we’re cranking up the volume on advice for new graduates venturing into the world of teaching music. It’s time to ignite your passion, fuel your creativity, and make learning music an unforgettable experience for every student!

I’ve used the acronym REAL FINE for my advice for graduates, here we go!

R – Relationships are the most important thing! Mostly with your students, but do not forget your fellow teachers, admin and families. Other staff are different to us.

E – Experiment. Learn constantly. Try new things. BUT keep what works, and don’t just flit from activity to activity. Keep sound pedagogy in mind. It is good to be out of your comfort zone – that is how we learn.

A – Ask for help. Get a mentor or two!

L – Look after yourself. Self-care, mental health – this will be a tough ride and you can hang on a lot easier if you are fit and well.

F – Fun, flexible

I – Ignorant – it is OK to be ignorant – you don’t know what you don’t know.

N – Network. Share with, and learn from others

E –   Extra  – All the other things – organised, creative, classroom management and procedures, smile and laugh, be YOU.

Thriving in Challenging Schools: Practical Survival Strategies | 15607 Sep 202500:15:16

Welcome back to Thriving in Challenging Schools. This is Episode 2 of our series, and today we’re diving into something every teacher in a tough environment needs: practical survival strategies.

Let me ask you this—what if I told you a coffee machine could actually save your sanity? Or that the secret to surviving a challenging school might already be sitting in the boot of your car? Sounds a bit crazy, right? But these are the kinds of real-world, low-cost, zero-permission-needed strategies that can make the difference between just scraping through the day and actually keeping your joy and creativity alive.

In this episode, we’ll talk about three practical tools you can start using right away:

  • How to create your own little “islands of civility” during the school day.
  • Why having a Plan B in your back pocket can be a lifesaver when chaos strikes.
  • And how to simplify lessons when the wheels fall off, so you can focus on what really matters.

These aren’t theories or big policy changes—they’re strategies you can put into action today, without needing anyone’s approval. So grab your coffee (or your emergency stash of drumsticks!) and let’s explore some simple but powerful ways to not just survive, but thrive, in even the most challenging school settings.

Thriving in Challenging Schools: Mindset Mastery | 15531 Aug 202500:15:46

Are you finding that behaviour management is becoming more and more difficult? Every year, schools seem to include a greater number of children with special needs, often with little or no additional support. If you want to hear what I’m doing, the changes I’m making, and the mindset shifts that are helping me stay afloat after 40 years in education — then you’re in exactly the right place.

This episode is about how we can reset, reframe, and rebuild our confidence — not by chasing perfection, but by mastering our mindset. Over the next 12–15 minutes, I’ll share three practical shifts that are helping me navigate the toughest teaching environments yet:

  • Reframing obstacles as opportunities to grow,
  • Focusing on what I can control,
  • And celebrating those small, but powerful, micro-wins that remind us why we keep showing up.

So grab a notebook, settle in, and let’s talk about what it really takes to keep going — with courage, with creativity, and with a mindset that works for us, not against us.

TOGETHER SING

This year we have over 500 conductors/Teachers sign up representing over 150,000 singers from every State and Territory in Australia and some from Overseas.

The aim of Together Sing is to raise awareness of the value of Music Education and singing together to improve mental health and wellbeing.

Together Sing is a culminating week-long event during Mental Health Week. Participating schools and community groups sing a song specifically composed for the occasion. Digital downloads including lyrics, audio files, scores and other support material are available for all registered participants free of charge. This has been made possible through our partnership program coordinated by Kodály Qld. Together Sing Partners have generously donated time and expertise to provide these resources. Please take time to peruse and possibly support these partners.

In the months leading up to the performance week, schools and community groups can use the song and support materials to engage in activities based around the music, singing and the benefits of making music together including belonging, community and confidence.

During Mental Health Week, participants gather in their own context to perform the song together and immerse themselves in the joy and benefits of making music together. Performances do not have to be part of Mental Health Week – they can be at any time that works for you!

Our 2022 song, Where We Begin, is composed by a fabulous Australian Composer, Slade Gibson and arranged by another of our favourite Australia Composers, Will Brown. Listen on this page then register here for the score, audio and video files and more free resources.
