“I don’t think there is anything in our history that prepares us for what we have to do next. I think we have a lot of promising signs. It seems like the real work is still ahead of us. To me it feels that we’re making this up as we go along, we’ve made a couple good steps, we know the problem really well. Rick Moody was born in New York City. He attended Brown and Columbia universities. Frederic Tuten grew up in the Bronx. At fifteen, he dropped out of high school with aspirations to become painter and live in Paris. He took odd jobs and eventually went back to school, earning a Ph.D. from NYU. He travelled through Latin and South America, studied mural painting at the University of Mexico and wrote about Brazilian Cinema Novo. He taught at the University of Paris, acted in a short film by Alain Resnais, co-wrote the film Possession, and conducted summer writing workshops with Paul Bowles in Tangiers. The recipient of many awards for his writing, Tuten’s short stories, art and film criticism have appeared in ArtForum, the New York Times, Vogue, Granta and other publications. "So, to be able to develop an ecological mind, one must be ecological minded and really understand what it means to be interdependent and interconnected. So that brings together every kind of species we can think of, and we need to filter this way of thinking because when we are in a natural environment, we feel energized and uplifted. But how long does it last? And what do we do with it? To me, ecological mindedness, the topic of ECHIC (European Consortium for Humanities Institutes and Centres) is exactly this: being committed, developing a commitment towards the environment and towards well-being. It's only when we are really interdependent that we can thrive. And this was the core of this conference from various perspectives in an attempt to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue."

Paola Spinozzi is Professor of English Literature at the University of Ferrara and currently serves as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation. She is the coordinator of the PhD Programme in Environmental Sustainability and Wellbeing and the co-coordinator of Routes towards Sustainability. Her research encompasses the ecological humanities and ecocriticism, utopia and sustainability; literature and the visual arts; literature and science; cultural memory. Bruce Wolosoff is a composer and pianist whose work has been recognized for the way it integrates modern, classical, jazz, and blues together into "an authentic American voice".

In recent years, Wolosoff has been composing music in response to visual art. "Astronomer's Key", inspired by the artwork of Milton Resnick, was commissioned by the Roswell Artists in Residence Foundation for the Montage Music Society in celebration of the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program's 50th Anniversary. “The Loom”, inspired by the watercolors of Eric Fischl, was commissioned by the Eroica Trio and premiered at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. “for April” a work for cello and piano inspired by the charcoal drawings of April Gornik was recorded by Wolosoff with cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio and released as part of a book of Gornik’s drawings.In July 2018, Bruce Wolosoff’s “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra” was recorded in London by Sara Sant’Ambrogio and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Grzegorz Nowak.

A frequent collaborator in the field of dance, Wolosoff has collaborated with choreographer Ann Reinking on two ballets for Thodos Dance Chicago. “The White City” was named "Best Dance of 2011" by the Chicago Sun-Times, and a film version of “A Light in the Dark”, based on the story of Helen Keller and Ann Sullivan, received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement for Arts Programming. Wolosoff’s recording “Darkling, I Listen” is being used for a new Ann Reinking ballet based on the life of John Keats.

An accomplished pianist as well, Bruce Wolosoff received early acclaim for a recording of piano music by Busoni. More recently, he has performed and recorded his own compositions, including "Shenandoah Variations", “Many Worlds", "Four Blues", and "Darkling, I Listen”. Wolosoff’s discography also includes “Songs without Words” on Naxos American Classics.

Born Peter Warren Finlay, the “DBC” stands for “Dirty But Clean”. “Pierre” was a nickname bestowed on him by childhood friends after a cartoon character of that name. Pierre was awarded the Booker Prize for fiction on 14 October 2003 for his novel Vernon God Little. He is the third Australian to be so honoured, although he has told the British press that he prefers to consider himself a Mexican. In an interview with the Guardian (U.K.), Pierre explains his varied upbringing:I grew up with a real sense of cultural homelessness…. I haven’t been successful in fitting in anywhere. I clearly wasn’t Mexican, although I could move in that culture as easily as anywhere. I’m a British national but wasn’t quite from here; and I went to school with a lot of expat Americans…. In July 2005, Peter Boal became artistic director, succeeding Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, artistic directors since 1977. The Company of nearly fifty dancers presents more than 100 performances each year of full-length and mixed repertory ballets at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall in Seattle and on tour. The Company has toured to Europe, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Canada, and throughout the United States, with celebrated appearances at Jacob’s Pillow and in New York City and Washington DC.

He has choreographed for the Regional Dance America gala in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s NEXT STEP, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School’s annual School Performance. In 2015, he choreographed Signature for PNB’s mainstage repertory, and in 2017, he choreographed Shifted Figures for Sculptured Dance, a collaboration between Pacific Northwest Ballet and Seattle Art Museum presented at Seattle’s Olympic Sculpture Park.

Christopher D’Ariano | Corps de Ballet

Christopher D’Ariano is from The Bronx, New York. He studied at Ballet Tech, the School of American Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and he attended summer courses at Ballet Tech, Boston Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. He was the recipient of the School of American Ballet Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise. How would the life of Jesus be told through the eyes of his mother? How can literature help us understand history and the nature of identity?

Maciej Hen was born in 1955 in Warsaw. He graduated from the Cinematography Department at the Film School in Łódź. For years he has been trying his hand at diverse activities, from music to all fields of journalism and television lighting design. As a prose writer, Hen has published four novels so far: Według niej (2004, DUE; the English translation, According to Her, published in 2022 by Holland House Books, was shortlisted to the EBRD Literary Prize in 2023), Solfatara (2015, W.A.B., 2016 Gombrowicz Prize and shortlisted for the Norwid Prize and the Angelus Prize), Deutsch dla średnio zaawansowanych, Segretario and one non-fiction book, Beatlesi w Polsce (The Beatles in Poland).

"I wondered who could be a better narrator of the story of Jesus than his own Jewish mother? When I was young, as a European Greco-Christian, I was aware of some of my Jewish history, but writing According to Her, I tried to imagine the issue of someone considered to be a Messiah or prophet by some Jewish followers.
