Reputation Travels Faster Than Your Resume16 Mar 202600:15:04

Send us a Message!

Your name moves faster than your resume in construction, and that truth can either build your future or quietly close doors behind you. We dive into the art of climbing without burning bridges—how to pursue responsibility, income, and influence while protecting the relationships that outlast every project.

We start by separating gratitude from loyalty. You do not owe a company forever, but you do owe people respect for the role they played in your growth. From there, we unpack the most common ways bridges burn—messy exits, public complaints, and mishandled client transitions—and offer practical tools to avoid them. You will hear why becoming undeniable in your current role beats chasing a title, how to recognize informal power on a job, and the difference between rising from strength versus running from frustration.

We also explore leverage the right way. Recruiters will call and owners will hint at advancement, but measured choices keep your runway clear. We talk about building horizontal relationships—peer respect among superintendents, PMs, and field crews—so your base is wide, not wobbly. When it is time to move, you will know how to give notice, manage handoffs, protect clients, and thank the people who mattered. And if you stay, we name the traits that actually get you promoted: reliability, clear communication, calm problem solving, and true ownership.

By the end, you will have a playbook for reputation equity—the quiet currency that gets your name requested on bids and projects. Ambition is welcome here; carelessness is not. Subscribe, share with a teammate who is eyeing their next step, and leave a review with your best tip for leaving well. What do you wish you had done differently on your last move?

Eggs, Egress, And Earning Respect09 Mar 202601:00:15

Send us a Message!

What does it take to turn a 5 a.m. chow line into a blueprint for leading mission-critical construction? We sit down with Kera, a former Army culinary specialist whose real edge was never the spatula—it was logistics, compliance, and performance under pressure. She walks us through the surprising complexity of doors, frames, and hardware, where codes, egress, and security converge and where a single lock can determine safety and success across the life of a building.

We unpack how a chance mentorship shifted her from hospitality and executive support into a 19-year construction career, and why veterans thrive in this space. Kara explains how federal projects raise the stakes: if a blast door fails or a camera goes down, the impact is immediate and serious. That mission mindset reshapes design decisions, demands tighter collaboration with veteran-heavy vendor teams, and rewards leaders who can plan, adapt, and deliver.

Kera’s leadership playbook is grounded and practical: competence earns respect, not title; show up early; do what you say you’ll do; measure your impact by the growth of your people. She shares candid stories of navigating bias as a woman in a male-populated industry, choosing clarity over confrontation, and turning uncomfortable moments into teaching chances. We also dive into identity after service, the power of USO community, and how faith and a later-life degree in ministerial leadership strengthened her integrity and resilience amid personal loss.

If you’re a veteran eyeing construction—or anyone curious about how soft skills become hard results—this conversation offers a clear path forward. We cover tangible entry points across design, engineering, spec writing, logistics, project management, and field roles, and why skills and certifications can outrun degrees. Listen, share with someone in transition, and tell us: which service skill are you turning into your next career step? Subscribe, leave a review, and join us as we keep building stories that matter.

When Rest Feels Unsafe: Choosing Depth Over Speed05 Jan 202600:25:25

Send us a Message!

What if rest didn’t feel like failure? We open the year with a quiet, unhurried conversation about choosing depth over speed, especially for veterans and builders who were trained to move toward noise, deadlines, and pressure. When usefulness becomes identity, stillness can feel unsafe—so we name that tension and learn how to carry strength without losing our humanity.

I share why structure comforts until it outlives its season, how exhaustion can hide beneath applause, and the moment when “pushing through” stops being leadership and becomes avoidance. We sit with the grief almost no one names: the loss of brotherhood when you leave a unit or a crew. You don’t miss the chaos; you miss being known. We talk about letting that grief soften rather than harden you, honoring what was without demanding it stay the same, and rebuilding by reordering—not erasing—your past.

Faith has a place here too. Early faith often trades in outcomes, but maturity asks for trust when control won’t cooperate. Transition can’t be brute‑forced; it has to be walked, patiently and honestly. Along the way, we revisit what legacy actually is: not a speech or a ceremony, but your daily posture—how you show up tired, how you repair mistakes, how you treat the people in your care, and whether you can rest without apology. Real leadership creates space, protects margins, invites candor, and teaches calm through self‑regulation, not performance. And we face the hidden invoice for unchecked hustle: when we don’t choose where the cost lands, family pays it by default.

If you’ve been praised for endurance so long that stopping feels dangerous, this is your permission to slow down. Start smaller than you think—five quiet minutes, one clear boundary, a single honest no. Subscribe, share this with a teammate who’s carrying too much, and leave a review with one small change you’ll commit to this week. Your life should have room for you inside it.

From Rotor Blades to Roof Lines13 Oct 202500:35:17

Send us a Message!

What happens when a Night Stalker trades flight ops for flat roofs—and still refuses to miss the mission? We sit down with Dylan Kirkpatrick, a former 160th SOAR crew chief, who rebuilt his sense of purpose by owning the full stack of commercial roofing: business development, estimating, and project management in the booming Dallas–Fort Worth market.

Dylan walks us through the habits forged in special operations—meticulous planning, relentless tempo, and uncompromising integrity—and how they transfer directly to high-stakes construction. He unpacks the steep learning curve of product mastery, from manufacturer systems to screw counts that make or break million-dollar proposals, and explains why a partnership mindset earns trust when roofers are first to be blamed for leaks. Along the way, we talk frankly about identity after service, survivor’s guilt, and the ongoing toll of suicide in both veteran and construction communities, grounding big goals with family support and everyday routines that keep him steady.

If you’re curious how to build a book of business from zero, get onto GC bid lists, or diversify into building owners and property management groups, Dylan shares concrete steps and targets—like crossing $1.1M in awarded revenue within months and pushing for $1.5M by year’s end. We also explore the wider DFW landscape—data centers, healthcare, K–12, and high-end interiors—and why now is a prime window for veterans and career changers to enter trades like roofing, HVAC, electrical, or GC operations with tools such as SkillBridge.

Subscribe for more real-world playbooks from veterans thriving in construction. If Dylan’s journey helped you, share this episode with a teammate, leave a review, and tell us what mission you’re chasing next.

Finding Purpose After Service: A Skillbridge Success Story23 Sep 202501:03:48

Send us a Message!

After 21 years in the Army, Master Sergeant Karl Muller faced a crossroads common to many veterans—how to transition from the structured military environment to a fulfilling civilian career. The decision to retire wasn't made lightly. Despite earning a spot on the promotion list to Sergeant Major, Carl recognized that another series of moves would take a toll on his family. "I looked at my wife, Maria, and she just wasn't happy," Karl reflects. "Those weren't tears that were celebratory. It was pain because I was dragging my kids from school to school."

Enter the Department of Defense SkillBridge program, a powerful but underutilized resource that connects transitioning service members with civilian employers for internships during their final months of service—all while maintaining their military salary and benefits. For Karl, this opportunity led to Builders First Source, a national distributor of construction materials, where he now manages multi-family construction projects in Lubbock, Texas.

What makes Karl's story particularly compelling is that he had zero construction experience. Yet the leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and disciplined approach he developed through multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan made him an ideal candidate. "Your skills in the military will have you learn faster than ever," Karl explains, having mastered complex aspects of construction project management in just four months that might take others years to grasp.

The parallels between military service and construction run deep. Both require precise teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt when plans go sideways. As Karl puts it, "We don't just build projects, we build teams, communities and a future worth fighting for, just on a different battlefield." For veterans seeking a tangible way to apply their skills, construction offers the satisfaction of creating something visible and lasting—a stark contrast to the often intangible nature of military achievements.

Want to support veterans in your community? Consider participating in the SkillBridge program at your company. As Karl powerfully states, "You've heard somebody say 'thank you for your service,' but nothing says t

The War is Over, Now We Build08 Sep 202500:37:26

Send us a Message!

Ted Baumgardner's journey from Marine Corps intelligence officer to construction technology entrepreneur offers a compelling roadmap for veterans seeking meaningful work after service. Growing up in a South Jersey construction family with parents who ran union businesses in Atlantic City, Ted had building in his blood—but first answered the call to serve after 9/11, attending the Naval Academy and becoming a Ground Intelligence Officer.

What makes Ted's story particularly valuable is how directly his military skills translated to construction. As an intelligence officer, his job was "organizing chaos"—collecting battlefield information and delivering it in a synthesized, actionable format to commanders. When he joined his family's glass and glazing business after eight years of service, he discovered the construction industry faced similar challenges with information overload. Estimators and project managers were drowning in drawings, specifications, and communications, often spending half their time just organizing files rather than applying their expertise.

"Building skyscrapers is the closest thing to war in a peacetime environment," Ted quotes, highlighting why veterans find such natural homes in construction. Both domains thrive on teamwork, shared mission, and overcoming physical and mental challenges together. The sense of camaraderie that veterans miss after leaving service exists abundantly on construction sites, where creating something tangible with your team provides profound satisfaction.

Ted offers a philosophical perspective on finding purpose after military service: "When the revolution was over in 1783, George Washington went back to the plow. The whole point of war is to achieve peace. And then, what do we do in peacetime?" The answer lies in building communities. "If it wasn't for folks in construction, we wouldn't have places to live, work, or worship. All of this is done because men and women dedicate themselves to working together and creating things that otherwise wouldn't exist, and there's nothing more meaningful than that."

Connect with Ted on LinkedIn to learn more about transitioning from military service to a fulfilling construction career—he's passionate about mentoring others following this path.

Navigating Career Transitions: From Military to Construction to Insurance12 Aug 202500:29:00

Send us a Message!

Career transitions can feel like starting over, especially when you've invested years building your expertise and identity. In this deeply personal episode, Scott opens up about his journey from 14 years in construction to a new career in insurance—a shift that felt remarkably similar to leaving military service.

For many veterans, construction offers familiar comfort: structure, discipline, physical challenges, and a daily mission. Scott shares how he progressed through various roles from project engineer to operations manager, learning what true leadership means along the way. But the grind eventually took its toll. The constant pressure, long hours, and struggle to maintain work-life balance led to difficult questions about sustainability and purpose.

This isn't a story about "not being able to hack it," but about recognizing when your heart is no longer fully committed to the mission. Scott candidly discusses how he leveraged his military and construction background to build a new career in property and casualty insurance, where he continues serving the construction community, just differently. "Instead of building structures, I'm building security and peace of mind," he explains.

The episode offers powerful insights for anyone facing a career crossroads: your identity is bigger than your job title; growth requires leaving your comfort zone; community support is essential; and patience with yourself matters. Most importantly, Scott emphasizes that your mission doesn't end when your uniform or career changes—it simply evolves.

Whether you're a veteran considering a career shift, someone questioning your path in construction, or facing any significant life transition, this episode provides honest perspective and practical advice from someone who's been there. Connect with Scott on LinkedIn to continue the conversation about navigating life's challenging transitions.

Quiet Discipline, Loud Results02 Mar 202600:10:49

Send us a Message!

Discipline gets a bad rap as loud and rigid, but the kind that actually moves careers in construction is quiet, steady, and relentlessly reliable. We break down how the habits forged in service—showing up when it’s inconvenient, keeping standards when no one’s watching, and regulating emotions under stress—translate into a powerful edge on site, in sales, and in leadership. The payoff isn’t noise; it’s trust. And in construction, trust is currency that opens doors, wins bids, and secures second chances.

Across this conversation, we unpack the difference between motivation and commitment, and why veterans are trained to operate from the latter. We talk about the practical signals of discipline—punctuality, preparation, organized thinking, clean execution—and how those small, repeatable actions compound over years into an unmistakable professional brand. We also challenge the pitfalls: how unexamined discipline can harden into rigidity, how ego isolates, and why humility is the force that keeps standards strong while staying adaptable to change orders, client needs, and evolving methods.

You’ll hear a straightforward playbook for sharpening your edge without burning out: protect your mornings for training and focus, guard your body and energy, honor your word in the small things, and build trust by being the person who doesn’t panic when pressure rises. We emphasize that discipline is a tool, not your entire identity, and that consistency—applied patiently—beats charisma over time. If you’ve ever wondered whether your reliability really sets you apart, this is your proof and your plan.

If this resonated, subscribe, share it with a teammate who brings the quiet steady, and leave a review to tell us what habit has compounded the most in your career.

Your Grit Called; It Wants A Day Off23 Feb 202600:10:28

Send us a Message!

The quiet danger isn’t missing deadlines—it’s losing yourself while still hitting them. We dig into why veterans in construction often mistake burnout for high performance, how chronic stress differs from the military’s surge-based stress, and why the mantra “I’ve handled worse” can mask a long, slow drain of meaning. This isn’t a story about weakness; it’s about duration, load, and the patterns that turn grit from a superpower into a liability.

We break down the subtle signals that many of us ignore: numbness where there used to be drive, irritability with crews and family, and the creeping fantasy of quitting with no plan. Then we get practical. You’ll hear a clear distinction between rest and recovery, plus small, sustainable steps that actually restore capacity—honest self-assessment, naming limits, shedding unnecessary load, rebuilding boundaries, and asking for support before the blowup. No silver bullets, no hustle slogans. Just real tools that work on real job sites.

Leaders have a bigger role than they realize. Culture sets the pace. We talk about modeling disengagement, rewarding sustainable execution instead of heroics, and tracking chronic exposure with the same care we bring to safety. If you feel trapped between obligation and exhaustion, you’re not broken; you’re overloaded. The fix isn’t quitting everything—it’s changing something. Strength isn’t endless endurance; it’s knowing when to adjust your pace so you can build a career that lasts without burning out the person doing the work.

If this conversation hits a nerve, share it with someone on your crew, subscribe for part three, and leave a review with one change you’ll try this week. Your voice helps more veterans work—not just hard, but sustainably.

If you're a military veteran in the construction industry, or you're in the construction industry and support our military vets, and you'd like to be a guest on the podcast you can find me at constructionvetpodcast@gmail.com , or send me a message on LinkedIn. Rebuilding Identity Beyond Rank And Role16 Feb 202600:11:45

Send us a Message!

The moment the uniform comes off, the noise drops—and the harder questions echo. We open up about the silence that follows separation, the sudden return of every choice, and why “freedom” can feel like drift when the structure that once organized your life disappears. Instead of sprinting into a new title to patch the hole, we get honest about the quiet grief many veterans carry and the subtle ways it shows up as irritability, restlessness, or emotional flatness.

Together we unpack the temptation to over-identify with the next role and call it resilience. We draw a hard line between usefulness and worth, then explore how to build identity on anchors that do not move: values, principles, and for some, a renewed or redefined faith. You’ll hear practical ways to practice identity rather than hunt for it—how you speak when you’re tired, how you treat people who can’t advance you, how you rest without a spreadsheet to justify it. We share why patience is not passivity but the only path to depth, and how families often sense the drift before we do.

This conversation is for veterans who feel “between structures” and anyone who loves them. We honor the past without getting trapped in it, and we set a course for integration—carrying forward discipline, mission, and service into a wider life that isn’t defined by rank or role. If the question “Who are you without the uniform?” makes you uneasy, good. That’s the starting line. Press play, sit with the question, and let the answer take time. If this resonates, subscribe, share with a fellow veteran, and leave a review to help others find the show.

How An Air Force Vet Built A Sales Career That Serves Construction09 Feb 202600:47:34

Send us a Message!

What if the skills you earned under pressure—decisive action, accountability, and care for your team—were the exact traits that make you great at serving builders? That’s the heart of our conversation with Air Force veteran Brandon, who traded security forces and deployments for a construction-adjacent sales role where reliability and relationships win the day.

We dig into the real transition—messy, human, and often humbling. Brandon shares how leaving the structure of service collided with personal upheaval, how TAPS helped and where it fell short, and why therapy, faith, and community became non-negotiables. He walks through the early stumbles in sales, the awkward jump to speaking with executives, and the moment he reframed the job: stop pushing, start listening, ask sharper questions, and deliver outcomes that matter on a jobsite. From fallen units and damaged fence to preventative planning for porta potties, waste tanks, and service schedules, he explains how small details shape morale, productivity, and profit.

You’ll hear why construction professionals respond to blunt honesty, how veterans connect faster on site, and what separates a true partner from a drive-by “car salesman.” We talk trade coordination, poll planning, doing it right the first time, and the leaders who keep evolving instead of hiding behind “that’s how we’ve always done it.” Brandon offers grounded advice for veterans entering sales—be patient, be humble, and keep asking for help—and a challenge to construction leaders: give grace, set clear expectations, and measure vendors by their response when things go sideways.

If you care about building teams that communicate, deliver, and grow, this story will land. Subscribe, share this with someone navigating their own transition, and leave a review to help more veterans and builders find practical guidance and a community that’s got their back.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Respect14 Aug 202300:06:43

Send us a Message!

Ever caught yourself belittling a co-worker, or perhaps, been at the receiving end of such treatment? It happens more than we'd like to admit, especially in our industry. In this candid conversation, we dig deep into the uncomfortable realities of how people in the building industry treat each other - and it's not always pretty. We talk about the hierarchy that seems to permit those higher up to talk down to subcontractors, or an owner to a GC, and share a gut-wrenching story about a drywall guy being publicly berated.

But it's not all doom and gloom. Change is brewing, and respect is slowly finding its way back into our workspaces. As a product of this industry who started in my mid-20s, I share how learning to respect those older and more experienced than me has profoundly shaped my professional journey. We also emphasize the importance of treating everyone as part of the same team, irrespective of their role or status. Ending on a hopeful note, we invite you - our listeners - to extend a heartfelt apology to someone you may have disrespected. Let's remember, we're all here for the same mission - to make the world a better place. And that starts with a little more respect for each other.
