Citizen Kane Interview, 1942 | Rita Hayworth & Orson's Theater Interview (Marlene Dietrich, Joseph Cotten), 194331 Jul 202200:28:25

Two interviews in one post.

  • First is his interview discussing the premiere of Citizen Kane at the Geary Theater in San Francisco. Dorothy Comingore is also interviewed, she played 'Susan Alexander Kane' in the film. The interview aired May 28, 1941.
  • Second interview took place in Hollywood for the Mercury Wonder Show on KMTR. The Wonder Show was a magic, variety, and comedy performance stage production that Orson created for the military and the general public. Military soldiers and crowd participants are interviewed before talking to Marlene Dietrich, Joseph Cotten, and Rita Hayworth and Orson, just after their marriage. I enjoy the interviewer rushing people on and off the mic, funny to me. This interview aired September 7, 1943.

Macbeth Follies (unaired, comedic Shakespeare), 194010 Jul 202200:31:48

Macbeth Follies never aired on radio, it includes Orson and actors from his Mercury Theatre on the Air group having fun. This was recorded April 26 or 27, 1940.

It's a comedic take on scenes from Shakespeare's Macbeth. NOTE: There are a couple of very mild cursing/swear words.

The Adventures of Harry Lime: Too Many Crooks, 195105 Jun 202200:31:27

We welcome a new program to the podcast, The Adventures of Harry Lime, this first episode is titled, Too Many Crooks. This episode aired August 3, 1951.

Plot: Harry gets a telegram from a banker in Budapest, asking for help from an upcoming bank robbery.

Orson Welles reprises his role of Harry Lime from the popular 1949 film The Third Man. The radio series is a prequel to the film, and depicts the many misadventures of the con-artist in a somewhat lighter tone than the film.

Around the World in 80 Days (musical version, Jules Verne): Mercury Summer Theatre of the Air, 194629 May 202200:32:33

This week is the first production from, The Mercury Summer Theatre of the Air, with an adaptation of the Jules Verne novel from 1873, Around the World in Eighty Days. This is the musical short version, sometime later he did a non-musical version that was an hour. I strongly prefer the second version.

Music by Cole Porter. Cast includes: Orson Welles (Fix), Arthur Margetson (Phileas Fogg), Larry Laurence (Passepartout), Mary Healy (Princess Aouda), Julie Warren (Molly Muggins).

This is the greatly shortened version of the Broadway play that Welles produced. The expensive musical extravaganza opened on Broadway in May 1946 but closed after 75 performances. The Broadway show was considered a huge flop.

After New York drama critic Robert Garland wrote disdainfully that the show had "everything but the kitchen sink", Welles had a kitchen sink brought to him onstage during his curtain speech.

Although Broadway audiences reportedly loved Around the World, its precarious finances—and the theatre's inadequate air conditioning—could not sustain it through the summer, and Welles was forced to close it. He personally lost an estimated $320,000 (equivalent to $4,450,000 in 2021) on the production. Due to bad legal advice, he was unable to claim the loss on his taxes, and it took him many years to pay the debt. [some notes here from Wikipedia]

Lady Esther: The Interlopers, Song of Solomon, I'm a Fool, 194124 Apr 202200:32:37

The Orson Wells Show (Lady Esther) with three short stories: The Interlopers, Song of Solomon, I'm a Fool. This episode aired September 29, 1941.

If you remember, just a few weeks ago I'm a Fool was also done for his Mercury Theatre On The Air -- guess he really liked that story. I enjoy his portrayal in that story, he does a great voice of an innocent and inexperienced young man. If you missed it, go to the April 3rd post to hear the Mercury Theatre On The Air version.

  • The Interlopers written by Hector Hugh Munro (aka Saki) (December 1870 - November 1916)
  • Song of Solomon written by 'Unknown'
  • I'm a Fool written by Sherwood Anderson (September 1876 – March 1941)

Bob jokes that Orson had an "Ensign" (pronounced 'In-sin') in his family tree. ‘Ensign’ is a junior rank of a commissioned officer in the armed forces. As the junior officer in an infantry regiment was traditionally the carrier of the ensign flag, hence the name.

Groucho Marx on The Orson Welles Almanac, 194406 Mar 202200:33:37

This week features the legendary Groucho Marx on The Orson Welles Almanac. This episode aired Wednesday, 9:30 p.m. EST on January 26, 1944.

The Orson Welles Almanac (also known as The Orson Welles Comedy Show) was a variety program on CBS Radio.

The idea of doing such a variety show occurred to Welles after his success as substitute host of The Jack Benny Program. Welles had an ongoing battle with program sponsor, Mobil, which shortened the life of the series. For example, Welles bristled at a suggestion that if Duke Ellington appeared on the show he should play the role of Welles's servant. [Wikipedia]
