Zane Ventures - Access to Startup Capital for Diverse Founders With Shila Nieves26 Apr 202200:53:46

Just 1.2% of the record $137 billion invested in US startups in the first half of 2021 went to Black entrepreneurs, and only 2% went to women-founded companies, according to a blog post from Crunchbase. If you aren't familiar with the challenges non-white, non-male founders of startups face getting capital in the United States, these numbers are actually better than they have been in the past. There was a great wakeup call in 2020 to the barriers to capital diverse founders face.

Zane Ventures is not new to the party, but they are using this new found corporate and traditional investor consciousnes and awareness momentum to be a disrupter in the capital market place. Through their long-standing Zane Access program they have mentored 1200 startups with diverse founders.  With the launch of their venture fund they are able to invest in bold founders who have innovative business models and are building early-stage technology solutions with early traction, whether in dollars or data.

Shila Nieves Burney is the Founding & Managing Partner of Zane Venture Fund.  Zane mentors and invests EARLY, reducing barriers for diverse founders to reveal their talents and reshape our communities. With the participation of Sig Moseley, considered a preeminent angel investor in the Southeast, and notable African-American successful entrepreneurs, Tope Awotona Zane of Calendly, George Azih of LeaseQuery, and Sjegun Otulana of Harmony Venture Labs, Zane is on their way to be a true catalyst for change for diverse founders in the Southeast Capital Community. #1 Method for Employee Attraction and Retention in Current Job Market From PayActiv20 Apr 202200:47:41

Did you know? 44% of the American workforce makes less than $20 an hour and are living paycheck to paycheck. Much of that hourly wage employee sector is considered essential workforce to keep our economy humming, as evident in the pandemic triggered shut down and in the current supply chain crisis.

For this Compassionate Capitalist Show, Karen Rands is joined by Sabina Bhatia, Chief Customer Officer at PayActiv, to talk about the impact 'financial insecurity and well being' of hourly wage workers have on the profitability and scalability of businesses.
Earned Wage Access is rapidly becoming the #1 way for companies to attract and retain their non-salary employees. Understanding HOW high turnover and job vacancies, and how distracted and anxious employees effect quality control and customer experience, is critical for both founders and investors. The soft dollar impact on the financial performance of a company and stagnation of a company to reach their growth targets directly correlates to the ROI of an investment.

With great passion and focus, Sabina Bhatia has been instrumental in building the financial category of Earned Wage Access from infancy to mainstream adoption as the most important employee wellness benefit of 2022. As a Chief Customer Officer at Payactiv, she acts as a daily advocate and amplifier for the needs of thousands of corporate clients and millions of lower-income workers. • How he created a reliable system for self-managing 6 single family homes while still working my full-time pharmacist job. (It involves attracting high quality tenants, tenant empowerment, and creating the right team.)
  • The (completely avoidable) mistakes that cost him over $30K on my first investment...and how new real estate investors can make sure to avoid them.
  • And the motivation that keeps him striving to become a true Compassionate Capitalist.

Mastering Video Communication for Founders - with Alfred Poor12 May 202500:48:02

In this episode, I sit down with communication expert Alfred Poor to talk about a skill every entrepreneur needs but only few truly master - how to show up and stand out on video. Whether you are pitching to investors, leading a virtual team or presenting at a conference, your presence on screen can make or break your message.

We talk about the practical stuff like posture, eye contact, and why those fancy virtual backgrounds might be hurting more than helping. We talk about the importance of being intentional in how you communicate, how to ease presentation jitter and why strong openings and closings are key to leaving a lasting impression.

If you are a founder or visionary leader, this conversation will give you the tools to connect with your audience, build credibility and guide them towards that all-important next step in your business journey.

After listening to my conversation with Alfred Poor on this episode of The Compassionate Capitalist Show, here are six key lessons I want you to take to heart when showing up on video:

  •  How you present yourself on screen can make or break your pitch.
  • A good webcam, clean background, and proper lighting go a long way.
  • Eye contact matters, so, look at the camera, not the screen.
  • How you sit or stand directly impacts your confidence and how others perceive you.
  • Don’t use scripts, use bullet points instead and speak from the heart to truly connect.
  • Always lead your audience somewhere. A clear call to action keeps the conversation moving forward.

Black Economic Empowerment and Prosperity Part 2 (Update) with Karen Rands17 Feb 202200:49:56

In celebration of Black History Month, we brought back Karen's popular 2 part podcast series on Black Economic Prosperity - Past Present and Future. Catch new intro and update too.  The wealth gap between white and black communities because of systemic racism and the resulting obstacle for building equity and wealth  is astounding.  This is part 2 of Karen Rands' series on Black Economic Empowerment and Prosperity.

This episode addresses the 10X prosperity gap, as reported by the Brookings Institute (AVG Black Household net worth is just $17,150 in 2016, while the average white household is $171,000) and suggests causes for that vast divide that compounded over time and builds upon the research and insights provided in Episode 1.

Here, Karen discusses the cycles of prosperity for Blacks in a segregated America, often followed by violence and out right biased legislative and financial practices intended to help enrich White while prohibiting Blacks from participating in those same economic and educational opportunities.

Karen touches on the challenges with public education, higher education, and societal beliefs that infect the black identity in America and the historic lack of capital and offers insight into new opportunities for Black Americans.

Karen provides a strong call to action for successful black business owners, and 'white' corporations, investors, VCs and Family Offices to be proactive in efforts to engage and uplift minority entrepreneurs and black business owners.

The many links referenced in the podcast can be found in the blog post for this segment at were at this page but a website migration broke it:   https://www.karenrands.co/compassionate-capitalist-the-black-lives-prosperity-past-present-future-pt2/  We are working to rebuild it.

Karen believes that teaching about wealth creation as an investor in entrepreneurs is a profound way to bridge the wealth gap for the next generation.

Black History - The Black Lives Economic Story- Past, Present, Future Part 1 Replay with Karen Rands17 Feb 202200:22:01

True equality comes with economic prosperity. This is a replay of Karen's historic, informative, and popular look at The Black Lives Economic Story - Past Present & Future PT 1.

The Compassionate Capitalist Podcast will explore the history of black enterprise, and government policies intended to aid in economic prosperity, and the racist practices that created barriers and obstacles to African American prosperity so that wealth and education gap which exists today has its roots dating back to the late 1800.  History shows time and time again how naive, well intentioned white people, in the spirit of compromise, released authority and control to other white people that had a sole intent to harm and hinder black people from achieving equality - socially and economically. There are many examples of progress being made and initiatives seeking to grow black entrepreneurship, wealth creation, and reinvestment into the communities that have been neglected and abandoned.   As we look forward with these new sources of funding and entrepreneur development, we must also look back to see how to fix the fissure that over a 100 years of systemic racism has caused in our communities.  If you are opposed to giving hand outs, then give a hand up.  Work to get the loopholes that enable racists to harm and prevent the success and empowerment of people of color out of our financial, judicial, and legislative systems.

What Would This Compassionate Capitalist Do with $1OOM or even $1M? Karen Rands Shares All09 Feb 202200:35:01

How would you answer the question:
What would you do if you were given $100M no questions asked ?
How would you benefit the world with that gift that would compound the impact?
That is what Karen was asked at a recent entrepreneur/investor event she attended.
Well not exactly.  Not the part about benefiting the world or compounding the impact.
That is just how she thinks.
As the founder of the Compassionate Capitalist Movement, it is on her heart to leave a legacy, her 'thumbprint' on the world, that amplifies wealth creation through increasing the available capital actively seeking qualified entrepreneur endeavors to invest in and produce a multiple on that money so that it can be reinvested again and again and again.

In this episode, Karen talks about the Compassionate Capitalist Movement, and the actions she would take, the programs she would create, and types of projects she would lead investment in if she was blessed with such a financial gift (or investment, or sponsorship) whether $100M, $10M, $1M or even $100K.

An investment in her vision for the Compassionate Capitalist Show as the megaphone for the Compassionate Capitalist Movement would accelerate the delivery of education, workshops, deal syndication, and wealth for the entrepreneurs and investors that join.

Successfully Raising Capital from Angel Investors with Nathan Beckord18 Jan 202200:33:55

On this episode of The Compassionate Capitalist Show, Nathan Beckord, Founder and CEO of Founder Suite, and Karen Rands will talk about what steps a founder needs to take to increase the odds of seed round and subsequent  funding rounds successful.

The steps to complete a successful capital raise are predictable, yet most entrepreneurs make the same common mistakes.  Even with all the free resources available through economic development organizations, incubators and accellerators, and an abundance of entrepreneur programs in colleges and universities, Nathan estimates that 98% of the startup founders have no idea about how to raise capital.  And as Karen has often stated, there is a science to the art of raising capital.

With over a decade of experience working with 150 startups as Interim CFO, business development, and many advisory roles, and deep experience with financial equity markets, Nathan Beckord started his own startup FounderSuite.com to provide software tools and formulized guidance to entrepreneurs seeking to raise seed stage and growth stage capital. With access to the investing preferences of over 200,000 investors, nearly a 1/4 of the entrepreneurs using the research and relationship tools on this SaaS platform have successfully raised nearly $3 Billion in capital in just 5 years since inception.https://foundersuite.com/

Elizabeth Holmes -Investors Learn the Cost of Limited Disclosure & Transparency - Karen Rands Weighs In11 Jan 202201:00:35

Karen Rands provides context, prior to the replay of her popular podcast on transparency and disclosure between entrepreneurs and investors, for the fraud perpetrated by Elizabeth Holmes, Founder and CEO of Theranos, a company that sought to develop and manufacture a medical device that could identify, monitor, and deliver therapeutics for disease detected through a prick of blood. Introductory comments set the stage for lessons to be learned by all investors.

Elizabeth Holmes had all the characteristics of the ideal startup founder:

  • visionary capable of big noble ideas
  • intensely competitive
  • internally motivated -strong drive and determination
  • highly intelligent
  • charismatic Except one: commitment to truth & transparency

Yet, she had the fatal flaw that often comes along with these other characteristics, which can hide underneath the surface only to reveal itself when faced with undeniable defeat:
+ total inability to accept and admit failure, due to a fragile ego and innate since of entitlement to succeed at any cost, and therefor not learn from it.

This case is also an example of the weight and validity that investors will place on the tacit endorsement of an early prominent investor, who may not be able themselves to identify the red flags and believe that with enough money a deal can be fixed. Their own ego won't let them admit they made a bad investment decision so they continue to invest good money after bad, with a wish and a prayer it will work out. In some cases, it does. In the case of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, and the $945M invested, it did not.

$5 million – the Science of Success, with John Mitchell - Think It, Be It04 Jan 202200:46:33

Think It, Be It Founder, John Mitchell, joins Karen Rands on The Compassionate Capitalist Show to share the Science of Success.  Feeling stuck, John used tried and true, but often overlooked, methods to figure out his personal breakthrough to go from earning a few hundred thousand a year to growing his own business to $5M in Revenue, and a big windfall when he sold it at a $25M valuation. John discovered the disconnect between his efforts and the results that had been holding him back - the beliefs locked into his unconscious mind.

John shares with Karen how he used science to amplify his (and our) innate ability to succeed when we apply science to align our conscious goals and objectives with the 'auto-pilot' manifestations of desires and action by our sub-conscious mind.

John Mitchell's 12 min a day program takes the principals of the famed Think & Grow Rich book by Napoleon Hill, and puts them into an actionable and relevant framework to chart your way to your ideal life of health, happiness and prosperity.  What a great way to start off the YEAR!!

John's team has created a special opportunity to complete a short assessment and schedule a free consultation call with him. You can also download his proprietary "thinking tablet guide", and more....

Raising Capital with REG CF and Interstate Exemption with Dar'shun Kendrick28 Dec 202100:37:08

This final episode of 2021 for The Compassionate Capitalist Show offers information and encouragement on using Georgia's REG D 504 Crowd Funding Intrastate Exemption from Federal securities regulations for general solicitation and the expanded nationally REG CF crowdfunding capitalization tool.  Startup entrepreneurs and small business owners have methods and tools to legally raise capital from investors at all income levels.

Unfortunately, as you will hear in this lively conversation between Karen Rands and Dar'shun Kendrick, the Invest Georgia Exemption (IGE) arguably one of the simplestways to raise capital, particularly for under represented founders, yet is considered 'a best kept secret'. Dar'shun explains the opportunity and challenges for black and women founders addressed with these regulatory exemptions of how and who you raise capital from to start and grow your business. Karen shares how exciting IGE and REG CF are for investors to participate in the entrepreneurial success of those small businesses in their community even when they don't have 6 figures, hundreds of thousands of dollars, to invest.

These programs are the foundation for the democratization of the capital markets and the Compassionate Capitalist Movement.

Dar'shun Kendrick, JD/MBA/Investment Adviser Representative is the Founder of Kendrick Advisory & Advocacy Group (KAAG). They help companies raising investor capital focus on growing their company by handling all the regulatory aspects. KAAG has helped companies raise over $1B in capital, while saving companies millions in unnecessary fees and costs. KAAG emphasizes their work with black and women founders to meet their unique capital raising challenges and needs. More info http://kaag.co

Compassionate Capitalist Show - The Fearless Mindset with Joe Evangelisti of LEAD14 Dec 202100:37:43

Fear is the biggest killer of momentum and a sneaky thing that lingers in the dark recesses of our hearts and minds to limit our subconscious belief that we can achieve what we have set out as our 'big thing' with the business we are starting or growing. Investors often can check all the right boxes when it comes to evaluating the potential of a business investment, with the one big variable that can't be predicted: "Does (Do) the Founder(s) have what it takes to LEAD the company to a profitable exit?"
Karen Rands talks with Joe Evangelisti about the entrepreneur mindset and how founders can identify the barriers to their personal and business success so they can pivot mentally and business wise to reach their full potential. During their discussion, they will explore the benefits of hiring coaches and turning to mentors as a way to  make the mindset shift to become fearless and why it is an important budget line item for entrepreneurs, executives, and investors to help mitigate the risk of a startup and high growth company.

Joe Evangelisti is an experienced entrepreneur, host of The Legacy Blueprint Podcast, and a high-performance coach, logging over 5000 hours of coaching entrepreneurs and business professionals on making life-changing transformation and become fearless in their pursuit of success.  Learn more at http://JoeEvangelisti.com  and http://legacybuilder.coach

Let’s Talk Business Finance with Dominick Wallace05 Aug 202500:58:08

In this episode of The Compassionate Capitalist Show, I’m joined by Dominick Wallace, a business lending expert, to answer key questions many entrepreneurs face: Should you borrow? What kind of funding? When’s the right time?

We cover the three types of money businesses use to grow: investor capital, revenue, and debt. While investor funding often feels like the best route, we explain why smart use of debt can actually cost less in the long run and help you stay in control.

Dominick and I talk about how using business credit, instead of your personal credit can make a big difference when applying for loans. And for those who already raised capital, using those funds to unlock a revolving credit line can give your business a cushion when cash flow dips.

The truth is, another economic storm is coming. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Preparing now could be the difference between staying afloat and shutting down, just like many businesses experienced during the pandemic.

If you're thinking about funding options or want to prepare for the unexpected, listen to this podcast and feel free to send in your questions.

Takeaways

  • Debt serves a critical function when raising capital.

  • Understanding different types of debt is crucial for entrepreneurs.

  • Cash flow management is essential for business success.

  • SBA loans can provide significant support for startups.

  • Creative financing strategies can help overcome funding challenges.

The Art of Pitching: How to Win Over Investors29 Jul 202501:07:47

In today’s episode of The Compassionate Capitalist™ Show, I team up with Erik Nelson, President of Coral Capital, Mountain Share Transfer, and Sterling Holdings, for a deep dive into one of the most mission-critical skills for any founder: the investor pitch.

Whether you’re a startup founder preparing for your first angel pitch or a growth-stage CEO aiming to engage an investment banker for a potential IPO, your pitch deck can either open doors, or close them. This is your chance to tell a compelling story that sparks interest, builds trust, and moves investors to act.

Together, Erik and I break down the essentials of a winning investor presentation; what belongs in your deck, how to position your business model, what investors really want to know, and how to avoid the common pitfalls that derail even promising companies.

We also explore the nuances of investor psychology, how to leave room for curiosity (and follow-up questions), and why practice and preparation are non-negotiable. This episode was first recorded for our Capital Conversations series, and I’m excited to now share it with my Compassionate CapitalistTM audience.

This is your playbook for building a pitch that gets remembered and funded, whether you’re raising your first round or refining your pitch for institutional capital.

Key Takeaways

  • A pitch deck is not a business plan; it's a visual representation of your business.

  • The goal of an investor presentation is to secure a follow-up meeting, not immediate funding.

  • Investors want to know how they will make money from your investment.

  • Understanding your market size is crucial for attracting investors.

  • Your management team plays a vital role in gaining investor confidence.

  • Financial models should be dynamic and reflect real business scenarios.

  • Tailor your presentation to the audience you are addressing.

  • Leave investors wanting more to encourage follow-up discussions.

  • Practice your pitch to ensure clarity and confidence.

  • Be prepared to address uncertainties and have a plan B.

Navigating the Compassionate Capitalist Compass: Family Office Governance & Best Practices with Guillermo Salazar29 Aug 202400:38:04

A "Family Office" is remarkable entity that High-Net-Worth & Ultra-High-Net-Worth Families use to manage their wealth as it grows, and preserve it for their future generations.  A family office provides a wide range of services tailored to meet the needs of HNWIs. From investment management to charitable giving advice, family offices may offer a dedicated team of specialists to service these clients.  Today we are excited to explore the intersection of family businesses and compassionate capitalism on the show. Guillermo Salazar, Founder of Exaudi Family Business Consulting, author and global speaker, shares his insights on best practices establishing and maintaining an effective family office.

Key Points:

1: Define a Unifying Business Purpose based on Shared Values
- In the world of family businesses, establishing a clear and unifying purpose for the business is the critical first step. Guillermo Salazar emphasizes that this purpose extends beyond financial success and aims to unite the family and business values. This fosters better communication among family members and lays the foundation for a shared vision, much like a company's mission. By creating an effective family charter, the owners can define the firm's purpose and equip themselves with the tools to identify and manage the next generation of leaders, ultimately preparing for a successful generational transition.

2: Understanding the Essence of Family Offices
- Family offices offer a holistic approach to managing the financial and investment needs of affluent individuals or families. Unlike traditional wealth management firms, they bring a wide range of services under one roof, including financial planning, investment management, wealth transfer planning, tax services, and more. Family offices can be tailored to the specific needs of HNWIs, addressing both financial and non-financial concerns, such as managing family assets, private schooling, and travel arrangements.

3: The Decision Between Single-Family and Multi-Family Offices
- Karen and Guillermo delve into the decision-making process for high-net-worth families to decide between single-family offices and multi-family offices (MFOs). Single-family offices are dedicated to serving one ultra-affluent family, offering a highly personalized approach. On the other hand, MFOs cater to multiple clients, resembling traditional private wealth management practices. The decision between these options often comes down to cost and control, with HNWIs weighing the benefits of sharing the expenses for specialized resources versus having exclusive control over their family office's services.

This episode of "The Compassionate Capitalist Show," is important for all listeners that are working to create great wealth.  Some day you will need to pave your path to the intersection of family businesses and compassionate capitalism, uncovering the essential steps for success, and the role of family offices in managing wealth, and the decision-making process behind choosing the right family office model.

Guillermo Salazar's extensive experience in family business governance and succession planning provides valuable insights for families looking to navigate the complexities of both business and wealth management.

Forecasting Future Workforce Needs (and Being Ready): Cary Sparrow's Data-Driven Analysis19 Aug 202400:48:09

In today's conversation, Karen Rands will unpack the pivotal role statistics and wage data play in employment, the impact of the pandemic on labor markets, and the ongoing "Great Resignation." Her guest, Cary Sparrow will share insights from his fascinating journey from nuclear submarine officer to technology entrepreneur. Cary is the CEO of one of the leading Labor Market Data analytics company that enables Corporate Executives and Business Owners see real-time global pay trends and labor market intelligence to budget and plan resource requirements to be ready far into the future.  The WageScape data platform is the largest and fastest source of real-time labor market data.

We'll explore the current labor shortage, wage pressures, and shifting dynamics in workforce management. Cary’s expertise on pay equity, transparency, and the evolving skill requirements shaped by AI and automation will shed light on critical shifts affecting CEOs, CFOs, CMOs, and HR execs alike.

In this podcast you will learn:

**The Changing Expectations of Workers**
The pandemic sparked a shift in worker priorities, leading to the "Great Resignation," where employees re-evaluated their career paths and life choices. Today, workers expect more than just a paycheck—they're looking for comprehensive benefits packages that include flexibility, mental health support, and career growth opportunities. In fact, job ads mentioning benefits or bonuses jumped from 4% to 40%, reflecting this trend.
Key Take Aways:
1. How these trends impact and influence a company's performance and strategic planning for the future.
2. Wage pressure, work condition requirements, rising demand for pay equity and transparency and the impact they have on the bottom line.

**The Shift in Workforce Skills for Future Jobs**
With the rise of AI, automation, and remote work, companies are recognizing the need for new skill sets. As industries evolve, skills like data science, AI, and cybersecurity are in high demand, while traditional qualifications are taking a backseat to adaptable and innovative thinking. Additionally, the concept of fractional executives—experienced professionals offering flexibility at lower costs—is gaining popularity, especially in mid-market companies.
Key Take Aways:
1. Challenges due to an aging workforce and younger workers not having appropriate skills.
2. Value of gaining experience of senior executive and the flexibility of hiring them as interim/parttime management
3. Challenges for growing companies anticipating and matching talent to company's development phases and corporate culture.

**The Value of Data for Budgeting and Future Planning**
As wages fluctuate and skill requirements change, it’s vital for companies to stay ahead by using detailed labor statistics. Tools like Wagescape provide critical insights into wage inflation trends and hiring health, helping businesses budget effectively and predict market shifts. For example, wage inflation is stabilizing but still presents localized challenges, making it essential for organizations to use data to plan compensation strategies and ensure pay equity.

Key Take Aways
1. Concerns and Impact of the push on wages at the entry level or for low skilled employees.
2. When does the economy of scale of the new tech of automation and AI replace the 'minimum wage' worker.
3. Importance of having data to predict future pay trends to be able to plan budgets and growth requirements.
