Jace is joined by writer Brian "Smitty" Smith and artist Marz Jr to chat about the Sybound Comet book, Transformers Worst Bot Ever. This is Transformers as you have never seen them before. The Gen One characters are definitely recognizable, but there is over-the-top characterization and laugh out loud humor. The guys chat about the challenges in adapting such well-known characters but putting their own spin on it both narratively and visually. This is such a fun book and great for readers of all-ages. If you are trying to get your younger ones to read, this is a great gateway book to get them excited about comics and reading! Join us to hear all about it!

DC Spotlight March 16, 2021 Releases16 Mar 202101:18:04

Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom! do a deep dive into the DC titles for the Week of March 16, 2021. They look at the new Superman anthology, Red & Blue and discuss how the stories are all very emotional and look at the impact that Superman has in them as well as on him. There is also a lot of talk about the limited color palette and how that plays with the mood of the stories. Both the guys are really enjoying Catwoman and issue #29 is no exception. It continues to be one of, if not the BEST monthly title DC is putting out. Brian Michael Bendis makes his debut on Justice League and while the art is spectacular, it's hard to get a read on the narrative because there is so little of it. On the other hand, the back up Justice League Dark story is jam-packed with narrative despite having less pages to work with. Finally the much anticipated Tom Taylor Nightwing lives up to all the hype and expectations. Jace goes so far as to call it a perfect comic and give it a 10/10. Emotional at times, lighthearted at others, it gives everything a fan of Dick Grayson could want. There's plenty of Barbara Gordon, Alfred makes an appearance, in a way and there is a puppy! Stunningly good.

House of X #6 | X-Tuesday16 Mar 202100:45:29

Jace and Jon-Paul break down the final issue of House of X. We see the speech Xavier gave to all humanity regarding the sovereign nation of Krakoa as well as the reasons behind it. They discuss the ramifications of that statement as well as of the supposed "miracle" drugs the mutants are offering the rest of the world. Also we see the ruling council of 12 mutants make the first laws for this new mutant nation. The Quiet Council, as they are called, is made up of a wide cross section of mutants, but whether that is actually a good thing is yet to be determined. Finally we see that council pass judgement on Sabertooth and it is a harsh judgement indeed, what fall out from that, if any, might we see in the future? Only time will tell.

Bad Idea Take Over with Dinesh Shamdasani & Warren Simmons14 Mar 202101:23:19

Jace chats with the co-CEO's of Bad Idea to get the lowdown and Eniac #1, allocations and launch day. There are a TON of rumors flying around out there, so we are here to set the record straight. We talk about why there weren't enough first printings to go around, how Bad Idea came up the number of books to be printed and how they hope to resolve this going forward. Also plenty of talk about the speculation market and just why are all those rules in place anyway. How come there will be no trades or digital? We ask it all, plus some listener & forum questions as well. If you have heard about Bad Idea and aren't sure what to think ... this is the podcast you MUST listen to.

Freedom Fighters #4, Shazam #4, Justice League #21 & Hawkman #11 | Friday Spotlight12 Mar 202101:13:11

Jace breaks down four great DC books. Freedom Fighters #4 finally has Uncle Sam returning with the current team of Freedom Fighters having done enough to restore the spirit of 76 for the people of this version of America. Will Uncle Sam's return be enough to turn the tide of the resistance against the Nazi's? In Shazam #4 we start to discover just how much trouble the Shazam family is in at the hands of King Kid, who has scattered our heroes across the Magiclands. However, help may be on the way from an unexpected ally. In Justice League #21, the imposter Superman stands revealed as the World-Forger explains his deception and the plan he has to save the multiverse. The sacrifices he is asking the League to make may prove more than they are willing to make though. So how it will all play out, and why is a beloved character claiming to have destroyed Superman and siding with the World-Forger in imprisoning more than have the living beings in the multiverse for all time? Have to read on to find out. Finally in the pages of Hawkman #11, we find out that even the combined might of all of Carter Hall's past lives may not be enough to defeat the Deathbringers once and for all. What will it take for Carter Hall to achieve victory and finally let his past be in the past?

DC Spotlight Friday | March 9, 2021 Releases12 Mar 202102:03:02

Jace and Rocky from ComicBoom! discuss in detail the DC comics from March 9, 2021. Superman #29 kicks off an all new era where the consequences of everything Jon Kent has been through the last few years. Joker #1 might as well be called Jim Gordon and we are all in on this. Wonder Woman #770 show much promise for the Amazon Princess and the guys really liked it. Green Lantern #12 is an incredible finish to the Morrison/Liam era of the Emerald Warrior. Rorschach #6 gets us to the halfway point of this great series from Tom King embracing the pulp feel of the original Watchman series. Batman Urban Legends #1 gives us back the classic feel of timeless Batman stories that we feel may have been missing recently.

Both J.T. and Jonathan talk in detail about developing the look and feel of the world, especially choosing the right animals for the characters and imbuing them with emotion and agency. There's so much to discover about the work behind the novel, but don't worry, we don't give anything away. No spoilers here! The guys also chat about choosing to crowdfund and release this project through Kickstarter and building community. So give it a listen and go pledge!

New Comic Wednesday March 10, 202110 Mar 202100:53:16

Jace take s spoiler-free look at some books from this week that he already had a chance to read. Knock 'em Dead by AfterShock continues to do just that, with one of the best lead ins to a final issue we have read in a long time. A couple of other AfterShock titles are really delivering action as well, Maniac of New York #2 & Scout's Honor #3 continue to be exceptional. Commanders in Crisis #6 also has an awesome ending and we can't wait to see what it leads to. This book perfectly captures writer Steve Orlando's love of comics. Children of the Atom #1 gives us a look at a new generation of mutants who may be much more than they seem. Batman Urban Legends is a great anthology that harkens back to a more timeless period for the caped crusader. Spider-Man gets a new costume and a bit of a new direction in issue #61 and it is a breath of fresh air. Meanwhile in Daredevil, Chip Zdarsky continues to deliver one of the most emotionally complex superhero stories we've ever read. Truly a must-read. Plus Jace gives a rundown on some other titles you might want to be on the lookout for.

Powers of X #5 | X-Tuesday09 Mar 202100:44:21

We also see the moment When Xavier and Magneto bring the White Queen into the fold and why Sebastian Shaw, the Black King, is a necessary ally as well. Then we jump to the thousand years in the future timeline and look at the consequences of the man-machine alliance making a deal with the Phalanx. The question of why Hickman is includes thus currently unexplored timeline remains a mystery, but that doesn't stop the guys from speculating.

House of X #5 | X-Tuesday09 Mar 202101:04:10

Jace and Jon Paul take a look at House of X #5. We begin to see just how groundbreaking the story Hickman is crafting truly is. This is the issue that explains how the mutants of Krokoa have found a way to fundamentally alter their loves FOREVER. The guys love the intricacy of the idea, but wonder at the moral questions that it might raise. We also see the outcome of the UN vote to recognize Krokoa as a sovereign nation. Plus the call has gone out from Xavier to all mutants everywhere, good, bad or indifferent, they are all invited to come make their home on the new island nation.

Maniac of New York Spotlight with Elliott Kalan | AfterShock Monday08 Mar 202101:00:52

Jace chats with writer Elliot Kalan about his previous comic work, breaking into the industry and most importantly, Maniac of New York from AfterShock. It's the hit new comic from one of our favorite publishers and it is all about a serial killer who has become like a walking natural disaster in New York City. The police and government are so busy pointing fingers and covering their own butts, they have all but given up on catching Harry the Maniac. What would it be like to live in a city where you get your Harry the Maniac report long with subway/road conditions and your weather report? Terrifying, but in an all too plausible way. Join as we chat about this with Elliott as well as plenty of love for his creative partners, artist Andrea Mutti & letterer Taylor Esposito.

Legion of Super-Heroes #2 improves over the first issue and end on a high note. Aquaman #2 is a masterpiece and solidifies that series as the best of all the Future State titles. Suicide Squad is ok, but the reason to pick up that issue is the Black Adam back-up. We get Superman both in the Superman Vs Imperious Lex & House of El, but only one feels like the real Man of Steel/ Jon us for all the details about each of these issues.

Tesselation Kickstarter Spotlight with Mike Phillips03 Mar 202100:44:54

Well Mike's comic Tessellation attempts to answer that question for his main character as we look at several different timelines that diverge from a single event. Join us to learn more about it.

Also we are introduced to a new Swamp Thing, the Magistrate just begins to plant seeds in Gotham and it's a new take on the Crime Syndicate of Earth-3. The Book of the Week for both Jace and Jay is Nocterra though, as the nightmare landscape created by Scott Snyder and Tony Daniel is fascinating and the narrative woven throughout the first issue is compelling with characters that immediately intrigue you.

It is a story that explores what it means to be a hero and even more than that, what it means to be a good person, a man who provides. Likewise with Future State House of El #1, which should have felt grand and epic but was a bit lacking, listen in to find out why the guys felt that way. Meanwhile at AfterShock Kaiju Score ending with a bang and Nuclear Family #1 is an intriguing start to that title. There's plenty more books everyone gave spoiler-free thoughts on and Jace gives a run down of some other titles you might want to be on the lookout for.

House of X #4 | X-Tuesday23 Feb 202101:12:20

Jace and Jon-Paul break down House of X #4, the single most action-packed issue of the whole series. We knew the staked were high and the risk was great, but we weren't prepared for the consequences the X-Men face when their mission to stop the Mother Mold from coming online goes sideways. From the art, to the pacing to the emotion, this issue or pitch perfect as the creative team is firing on all cylinders. Plus, when confronted with the hard, cold facts about the number of mutants and how they have already been hunted to the brink of extinction the guys fully embrace the actions taken by Charles, Magneto & Moira.

House of X #3 | X-Tuesday23 Feb 202101:02:19

Jace and Jon-Paul tackle one of the most action-packed issues of the entire series. Cyclops leads his team of mutants to the edge of the sun to try to take out the orbital platform that will serve as the Mother Mold. If this machine comes online it will eventually lead to the creation of Nimrod and the downfall of all mutants. It's safe to say the stakes have never been higher. We also discuss the ramifications of mutants no longer allowing themselves to be governed by human law. There's a lot going on in this issue so join us!

Silver Surfer #37 | Marvel Chronology - Thanos Reading Order22 Feb 202100:28:07

Jace takes a look at Siler Surfer #37 as the Sentinel of the Spaceways continues his search for Thanos. He heads to Titan to learn as much as he can about the Mad Titan from his father Mentor. While on Titan he also encounters Eros again much to his chagrin and meets Drax the Destroyer for the first time.  Unfortunately for everyone involved the resurrection of Drax by Chronos is not without it's problems. Drax doesn't exactly display superior intelligence or tactical thinking this time around. Complicating things even further, Drax also seems to be missing the sixth sense he previously possessed which allowed him to track Thanos throughout the cosmos leading to a very annoyed Silver Surfer. When brute strength doesn't help Surfer to ditch the ever-annoying Drax, he turn to more unconventional, even humorous, means.

Action Comics #1010 | Superman Sunday21 Feb 202100:38:39

Jace talks about Action Comics #1010 as the Leviathan Rising story nears it's conclusion. Clark and Lois are undercover as Spyral agents trying to get some answers while Jimmy and Amanda Waller are still hidden away at the fortress of solitude. Meanwhile Bones is questioned by someone claiming to be Kate Spencer but he suspects it is Leviathan right away and gives away nothing to her. The art is great and we like a lot of what is here, but there are a few narrative choices which threaten to pull us out of the story. Listen in for all the details.

Future State Friday Week 619 Feb 202102:16:55

Jace is joined by Trevor from Dark Knight Nation and Rocky from ComicBoom! to discuss week six of Future State from DC Comics. It's a bit of a rough week as we continue to see series come to a close, but we don't' get conclusions. Even some books we had that started with promise don't really live up to the ending we were hoping to see. It's not all bad as there are a few stories the guys like, but it's the weakest overall week since the Start of Future State. We know there are some DC fans out there enjoying it, and we are glad that is the case, so join us to hear why we feel this event is falling short and let us know why you think it's succeeding if you are digging it.

Witchblade Vol 2 #'s 1-6 | Top Cow Thursday18 Feb 202101:44:11

We get a brand new bearer of the Witchblade who is strong, authentic and loyal to her friends. However, she is not without her flaws and has suffered some pretty major traumas throughout her life. How will that affect her using the Witchblade? Could that be part of the reason the Witchblade chose her? Only time will tell, but this series is off to a great start with a compelling case of supporting characters and some incredible art. Even New York City itself is a character in the story in a way it never has been before in a Top Cow book.

The Last Ronin #2 picks up where #1 left off, but the guys wonder how much the long delay between issues hurt the series. Future State Catwoman #2 ends one of the best titles DC has put out during this peek into the future so you should give it a look. This week takes a bit of a down turn in quality, which the guys weren't really happy about. The second issues are starting to be released and they are supposed to wrap up these storylines and give us some conclusions to the threads that have run throughout Future State. Unfortunately it seems many of the titles may have a less than satisfying conclusion. That being said, it's now all bad and some of the books are definitely worth your time.

New Comic Wednesday February 10, 202110 Feb 202101:13:26

Jace, Manny and Jay talk about some of the comics they have read for the week of February 10, 2021. It's not the best week in comics, but there are a few titles that really stand out. Scout's Honor #2 shows that this title from AfterShock is going to be a wild ride from start to finish. Also from AfterShock Red Atlantis #4 is still giving us that action movie feel with plenty of spy and espionage story beats as well. Knock 'Em Dead, also from AfterShock gets a Book of the Week nod from Manny and Jace as this story really hits its stride in issue #3. Jay gives his Book of the Week to Radiant Black, which is not only the biggest launch of the week, but the biggest launch of the year so far. Shades of early Spider-Man or Invincible, with great artwork and colors. Don't miss this one!

Powers of X #2 | X-Tuesday09 Feb 202101:01:53

Jace and Jon-Paul continue to break down the re-launch of the X-Men corner of the Marvel Universe from the mind of Jonathan Hickman. In the second issue of Powers of X, we see the real world consequences of the lives Moira MacTaggert has lived. It spurs an unlikely alliance that changes everything and sets the stage for what's to come. Hickman gives us plenty of glimpses into those futures starting with seeing Cyclops with a confidence and swagger we can't recall him ever having before, but we like it! Further into the future we see Apocalypse showing confidence as well, but his confidence may be crossing the line into arrogance and could cost his team dearly. Finally as we glance over a thousand years into the X-Men's future it's time for everyone to put on their thinking caps, because Hickman's going to Hickman. By this we mean, he gives us some wild, esoteric and theoretical concepts that take a bit of brain power to understand.

Uncanny X-Men #15 | X-Tuesday09 Feb 202100:33:03

Jace takes a look at Uncanny X-Men #15. Captain America shows up to give the X-Men some advice and offer some help, but Scott & Logan aren't sure they can trust him. Meanwhile it seems like Dark Beast may be the one they should worry about because he seems to be plotting something. Our heroes don't find out what it is until after they are called into action to face off against the MLF who now count Banshee and Hope Summers among their members. Confronting his granddaughter doesn't exactly go the way Cyclops might want or expect, but luckily Wolverine is there to be sure she doesn't get away with it. It's a different side of Hope and only time will tell if Scott can reconcile what Hope has done to him.
