Ric Charlesworth - “What might seem impossible and unlikely but if we did it, it would make a big difference?”16 Nov 202100:04:55

Emma Doyle has long been a fan of Coach Ric Charlesworth after reading his book in her early coaching years called: The Coach - Managing for Success. Then in January of 2018, she had the pleasure of speaking at the Australian Open Grand Slam Coaches Conference alongside Ric Charlesworth. Of course, Emma will never die wondering and asking the question 'what if...' and so she jumped at the opportunity to interview him on The Coaching Podcast. In this episode, you will hear his honest account of his biggest coaching failure and such interesting sliding doors moments in his life. Finally, his question for The Coaching Podcast is one that we must always ask of ourselves, that is: “What might seem impossible and unlikely but if we did it, it would make a big difference?”

Read more about Ric Charlesworth's bio here:
“There is a difference between being tired, and exhausted.” A sentence which rings through when describing Ric Charlesworth, and his approach to sporting pursuits and life itself. Charlesworth is a sporting icon, both for his playing efforts and later his coaching successes. During his sport, he studied Medicine and worked in Politics, but he will forever be known as The Coach. He specialises in knowing what triggers people (himself included) to be the best, and be their best. After retiring from coaching the Kookaburras in 2014, Charlesworth continues to spend his time working, part-time motivational speaker and full-time Dad.
Sport – as a player: Charlesworth was an avid cricketer. He played for 8 years in the WA state team. But his first love was hockey, in the National team playing 18 years for WA, and National teams for 17 years. Throughout this period, he was selected for 5 and went to 4 Olympics with the Australian team.
It was here in his own sporting life that he learnt the difference between being tired, and exhausted. He learnt that if he could take anything from his own playing days, it would be that to be a good coach you must distinguish the difference between the two, and push people beyond what they thought was possible. "In my 14 years of coaching National teams, both men and women, I have never met a player who knew how good they could be."
Sport – as a coach: Charlesworth prided himself on preparation and being willing to try new ideas. Sometimes it is necessary to select based on attitude, rather than skill. A strong attitude ensures the individual has both the desire and ability to be pushed.
Hockeyroos coach for 8 years (1993-2000); 2 Olympic Gold medals & 2 World Cup Golds. They sat ranked #1 in the world for the entire period with Charlesworth as coach. Kookaburras coach for 6 years (2009-2014); Olympic Bronze, 2 World Cup Golds & Commonwealth Games titles.
He treated his coaching as an opportunity to elevate the sports ambitions of both himself, and others, placing emphasis on bettering the people he had and finding new and exciting talent. Adding value to the athletes and building depth in his squad. It was his background in medicine and politics that provided him with an unusual blend of expertise for his life as a coach.

Daniel Flynn - Find a coach or a mentor who can help you see your blind spots09 Nov 202100:05:49

Emma Doyle had the pleasure of meeting a total young game-changer, in person, back in 2017 named Daniel Flynn. She was blown away and moved by his purpose for being on this planet. He reminds us all to find a mentor who can call you out on your blind spots and ask yourself the question - 'why are you here? What's your purpose?'

Be prepared to be inspired. Emma bought a copy of his book and his TEDx talk can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTZC6PmsqGI

About Daniel in his own words:
In 2008, I led a group of people who launched Thankyou and have seen it grow from a small start-up become one of Australia’s leading mainstream social enterprises.
12 years on, Thankyou’s products are stocked by major retailers in Australia, with every product contributing to helping end global poverty. To date, Thankyou has raised over $17 million to impact the lives of people across 22 countries.

In 2015 I had the privilege of writing a best-selling book, Chapter One, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx44cXeKC7s) a story that generated $1.4 million in sales in its first month using an unorthodox ‘pay-what-you-want’ model. I’m passionate about disruptive marketing and am honoured to have led our team to execute some truly unconventional and highly successful campaigns that led to Thankyou products being stocked by some of Australia’s biggest retailers.

As part of my role, I love to speak to audiences around the world, telling stories and motivating people to realise that they too can make their own ideas a reality.

Valorie Kondos Field - "Know thy self"20 Jul 202100:45:11

Valorie Kondos Field and Emma Doyle met when they were both speakers at The Winning Summit. They instantly connected on many coaching levels and this episode is no different. There are so many pearls of wisdom to be heard and vulnerable moments shared straight from the heart. ENJOY!

Valorie is the retired head coach of the seven-time NCAA Champion, 22-time Regional and 18-time Pac 12 Champion UCLA Women’s Gymnastics team. Inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, the four-time “National Coach of the Year” was also named “West Region Coach” of the Year and Pac 12 “Coach of the Century” for her solid track record as a preeminent coach. Affectionately known by her gymnasts as “Miss Val,” her reputation is only one reason that 46 former US national team members came through her program and why half of the last two Olympic teams committed to UCLA. Valorie’s coaching success can be attributed to her extraordinary leadership and mentorship of young student-athletes, and the way in which she used gymnastics as an avenue through which to teach valuable life lessons, while encouraging individuality and joy.

Something Valorie learned from the late John Wooden, the legendary and most successful collegiate basketball coach of all time, who was one of her biggest inspirations, as well as a close mentor and friend. Valorie began her career as a professional ballet dancer and choreographer for the Washington, DC and Sacramento Ballet Companies. Although never a gymnast herself, she’s transferred to her student-athletes all she learned in the world of classical dance. The result of which resulted in nearly three decades of coaching one of the premier athletic programs in any sport, mentoring hundreds of elite athletes, including Olympic champions Simone Biles, Jordan Wieber, Kyla Ross, Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez and viral sensations Katelyn Ohashi and Nia Dennis, among others.

Also known as the nation’s foremost gymnastics choreographer, Miss Val’s many credits include choreographing and directing a myriad of live variety shows, such as the NCAA Opening Ceremonies for Women’s Basketball, a flash mob of famed female athletes and coaches at the inaugural Aurora Games, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar roast, CBS’s “Jump, Jive & Thrive” Breast Cancer Research Foundation benefit, and 26 years of cirque-type shows for SeaWorld’s Summer Nights and the San Diego Zoo. Current projects include additional live stage shows, TV specials, events and the development of a theatrical musical, plus the highly anticipated post-Olympic “Gold Over America Tour” featuring an all-star team of female gymnastics champions, headlined by Simone Biles and also featuring Katelyn Ohashi, which will begin in Fall 2021 and is slated to visit more than 35 U.S. cities, celebrating powerful female athletes in a high-octane, fun-filled experience. She is a dynamic and charismatic speaker with an extensive schedule of “Corporate Coaching” events for national companies including JP Morgan Chase, General Electric, Gucci and Jackson National Life Insurance, and has contributed to various panel discussions including Bustle’s “Rule Breakers” and the ESPNW Summit. In her TEDWomen 2019 talk, Miss Val inspires people to reevaluate their definition of success. She maintains that real success is developing champions in life, and that in order to motivate success, we need to inspire those whom we lead without compromising the human spirit. As a recent breast cancer survivor, Valorie’s positive outlook and hope-filled message is impactful. She empowered her athletes to use their voices, to celebrate themselves, and to enjoy the elite sport that has damaged so many in the past.

She also shared her motivating and inspirational messages with the world, with her book, “LIFE IS SHORT, DON’T WAIT TO DANCE: Advice and Inspiration from the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame Coach of 7 NCAA Championship Teams,” which was released in Fall 2018 by the Hachette Book Group. It expounds on her life philosophy: “Don’t wait to see what life is going to hand you, take control of your life and design ~ choreograph it exactly how you want it to turn out.” In her free time, Valorie is active with the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation, LA 84 Olympic Foundation, WISE (Women In Sports & Events), BCRF (Breast Cancer Research Foundation), Unite For Her, and many other charitable organizations, close to her heart. She resides in Fayetteville, Arkansas with her husband, retired UCLA Football Coach, Bobby Field

Vlado Platenik - Empathy, passion, and knowledge Makes a Great Coach13 Jul 202100:52:31

Are you curious to know more about how do you break free from the mass of wannabes and qualify for Wimbledon? If you answered yes to this question, then this episode on The Coaching Podcast is one not to be missed with Slovakian Coach, Vlado Platenik. What does Vlado think makes a great coach? Empathy, Passion, Knowledge!

In the glossy world of ‘Grand Slam’ tennis coaches, there are very few Grand Slam Development Tennis Coaches i.e. tennis coaches that work in the trenches taking ‘nobodies’ with no ranking points, no money, into ‘somebodies’ Top 100, Top 64… and beyond. A former professional tennis player from Slovak has taken four players from lower-ranking to Top 100 WTA, four players to Top 20 WTA. His players have qualified for more than sixty Grand Slam Tournaments and qualified for more than fifteen Wimbledon’s. Are there other coaches that can equal those results in developing young talent? Rather than coaching a player that’s already broken through.

Each player development process takes around three years of Vlado’s life dedicated to this one person. His current client is Veronika Kudermetova ranked 32. Vlado has now been on WTA Tour for twenty + years spending eleven months of the year away from his own family. There’s a Winning life off-court on tour and a Winning game on court on tour. And his teenage daughter (Ela Platenikova), schooled in Vlado’s ‘method’ also dreams of Wimbledon! She is 17 years old, number 2 in Slovakia in her age, playing ITF juniors and ITF women tournaments. Vlado's can be reached via his e-mail: platenik76@hotmail.com

Casey Dellacqua - A great coach is someone who is an effective communicator, demonstrates respect and has fun.08 Jul 202100:14:43

What a real treat it is to have Casey Dellacqua on The Coaching Podcast. Emma Doyle has known Casey for many years and watched her development closely over the years. In this episode, she talks about the Wimbledon semi-final matchups as well as the importance of keeping tennis fun. What does Casey think makes a great coach? Someone who is an effective communicator, demonstrates respect and has fun.

Casey Dellacqua retired from professional tennis in 2018 as one of Australia’s most popular and classy representatives. The West Australian was an integral member of the Australian Fed Cup team and a dual Olympian. Dellacqua first captured the nation’s heart when she made her Australian Open debut as a 17-year-old in 2003.

Dellacqua joined the world’s top 50 for the first time in 2008 following a breakthrough Australian Open where she made the fourth round. Shoulder and foot surgeries in 2009 and 2010 halted her progress before the left-hander returned in 2011, winning six ITF Pro Circuit titles in a row, as well as the French Open Mixed doubles title with American Scott Lipsky. Dellacqua enjoyed enormous success on the women’s doubles tour and was ranked as high as number three in the world. She made the 2008 French Open final with Francesca Schiavone, and was a finalist with a close friend and now world No.1 Ash Barty at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, all in 2013.
Dellacqua rose to a career-high singles ranking of 26 in 2014. A fall at the China Open in 2015 left Dellacqua with concussion symptoms that lasted for more than a year and led to the end of her singles career. She eventually left the game to spend more time with her growing family before being honoured with the Spirit of Tennis Award at the end of 2018.

Dellacqua is now a respected commentator and is passionate about growing and developing the game in Australia through mentoring and coaching.

    • Tennis reaction time is 0.5 seconds, in comparison to racing car drivers' who must react within 0.2 seconds.
  • 12.01: Can business people access flow state? Yes, because when you take the speed away, the pressure remains and people respond to pressure in the following ways:
    • 1) Walk away
    • 2) Get angry
    • 3) Blame circumstances or other people (trying to protect our self-esteem)

    Trust = Co3Re3
    Trust is Co3Re3 = [Communication x Cooperation x Commitment] x [Reciprocity x Results x Rewards].
    • Trust evolves from one element to the other: Communication leads to Cooperation, which leads to Commitment… Reciprocity (trust but verify, keeping it fair) leads to Results and Rewards. The impact is exponential (to the cube).
    • The alignment of these Co3Re3 factors makes Trust in Teams exponentially powerful. It allows people to create common languages that IGNITES high positive energy and pride to attain meaningful achievements.
  • 21.07: Book: The Glass is Full and a Half - A Memoir of Transformation by Carlos Salum

Football Coach #156: David Wheadon - The Art and Science of Coaching19 Mar 202400:35:46

Welcome to The Coaching Podcast. In today's episode, we have the privilege of hosting David Wheadon, a renowned coach whose insights redefine the essence of coaching. With a career spanning decades, David's wisdom illuminates the intricate fusion of empathy, teaching, and people management that defines effective coaching. From unraveling the art of empathy to navigating the delicate balance between science and art in coaching, David's perspectives offer invaluable lessons for coaches at every level.

Here is a summary of the key points;

  • 1.20: Cats or dogs?
  • 1.46: Coaching = People Management + Teaching
    • Teaching is the act of making learning happen
    • If you are going to be a teacher, you have to be a good people manager. At the base of this is EMPATHY - understanding the perspective of the other person.
    • You have to know what motivates someone - what 'bait' do they want?
  • 4.10: How can a coach improve in the art of empathy?
    • Ask questions and listen to the answers (stop talking)!
    • What's behind what they are saying is often not the truth.
  •  7.06: What do you mean by the art and science of coaching?
    • "I believe that coaching is an art based on a science."
    • The artist coaches last longer in sports as long as they surround themselves with scientists.
  • 9.46: Skill Acquisition - all open skills require you to teach decision-making first, technique second (but not secondary), because the best players are often the 'smartest' (they are in the right place at the right time). Make sure you expose players to different ways of solving problems.
  • 13.07: The Yips: Any sport/skill where there is time to think about failure is difficult.
  • 15.42: Coaching Philosophy = The beliefs and principles on which your decisions and actions are based! Having a well-developed coaching philosophy (that evolves) will help you during times of uncertainty.
  • 16.54: Once you choose a philosophy, have a mentor take the opposite view to challenge you on what you believe to be true.
    • "Players 'feel', coaches 'see'. Therefore, teach your players to teach other players what they know (focus on their strengths - the fastest way to improve their self-esteem).
    •  They started coaching during the matches.19.30: What are the benefits of peer coaching?
  • 23.00: Top 3 tips:
    • 1) Learn how to teach (get a qualification). Teach through pearls of wisdom. Players learn through doing.
    • 2) Learn how to teach skills. There are four ways that teaching can occur:
      • 1) Coach to Player
      • 2) Player to Player
      • 3) Player to Coach
      • 4) Player alone
    • 3) Practice your people management - learn how to build relationships with your players.
  • 24.58: The Next Coach Program - There is not one way to coach but think about how you are going to coach. It's based on principles, not methods.
  • 28.25: In the ever-evolving coaching landscape what disruptive idea do you have that will disrupt the way that we coach in 2030?
    • It's evolving to teaching through play!
    • Good training is really ugly! How can we teach better than what we already know?
    • In 2030, we will have really good goal-kicking coaches.
  • 31.20: What makes a great coach? (WMAGC)
    • Empathy
    • Teaching
    • People Management
  • 32.27: A mentor tells you things that you don't want to hear. A mentor is someone you respect.  Someone you believe in and who is on your side.
