AI Summary
Ryan and José recorded episode 531 of their Clive Barker podcast, discussing recent news including Arrow Video's new 4K restoration of Nightbreed with both theatrical and director's cuts, featuring new extras and a companion book. They reviewed the Hellraiser Revival game's Cenobite Collector's Edition, comparing it to the previous Leviathan edition and noting the lack of a signed Clive Barker print as a key difference. The hosts watched a new developer diary for the game, showcasing more detailed Cenobite animations and gameplay footage with Doug Bradley's voice work. They also discussed upcoming Hellraiser conventions including Mad Monster Party in Arizona and Days of the Dead events in Chicago and Atlanta, featuring several Cenobite actors. The podcast concluded with plans for their next book club discussion of "The Body Politic" from Books of Blood Volume 4 and a vote on which 1987 film to compare to Hellraiser.
Hellraiser Developer Diary Discussion
Ryan and José discussed technical issues with audio and video settings before planning to watch a developer diary video about Cenobytes and Pinhead from the Hellraiser series. José shared a link to a YouTube video and they briefly discussed its content, though Ryan only watched a 30-second preview due to the initial link issue. The conversation ended with Ryan asking about "Team French" but the question remained unclear due to audio issues.
Nightbreed 4K Restoration Discussion
José and Ryan discussed a new 4K restoration of the film Nightbreed, including both theatrical and director's cuts, with enhanced features like Dolby Vision HDR, new artwork, and a companion book. They reflected on previous collector's editions and debated whether physical media releases, including 4K, would continue to be relevant given the rise of digital formats. Both agreed that while digital media is growing, physical media will likely persist in some form, particularly for collectors and professionals in the film industry.
Physical Media's Enduring Relevance
José and Ryan discussed the ongoing relevance of physical media in the age of streaming services. They noted that while streaming has become popular, limitations in internet speeds and the temporary nature of licensed content on platforms like Netflix mean physical media will likely continue to have a place. They highlighted how streaming platforms have shifted focus toward producing their own content rather than licensing existing material, leading viewers to seek out older content on alternative platforms like YouTube. The conversation concluded with appreciation for companies like Arrow, Shout Factory, and Turbine Media that continue to produce physical media releases.
Nightbreed 4K Release Discussion
Ryan and José discussed a new Arrow Video 4K release of Nightbreed, comparing the UK and potential US versions. They noted that the UK release includes exclusive extras like behind-the-scenes footage and UK-specific content, though they were uncertain if these features would be included in the US version. The UK release is priced at 30 pounds, which Ryan and José considered a good deal, though they agreed to wait for the US release to potentially save money and see if it includes similar extras.
Hellraiser Game Edition Comparisons
José and Ryan discussed the differences between various editions of the Hellraiser Revival game, including the new Cenobite Collector's Edition priced at $199. They compared features between the Leviathan Edition and Cenobite Edition, noting that the Leviathan includes a hand-signed art print while the Cenobite edition features a Cenobite statue and other exclusive items. The discussion highlighted concerns about the long pre-order period, which has been ongoing for about a year since the last pre-order update in June 2025, and they noted that the new dev diary "Cenobytes" provides additional footage of Cenobites in the game.
Hellraiser Revival Collector's Edition Discussion
José and Ryan discussed a Hellraiser Revival Collector's Edition, which includes a Cenobite statue, puzzle box, enamel pins, and a digital soundtrack. They watched a dev diary video showcasing the game's features, including platforming elements and various Cenobite characters. The video highlighted the game's focus on grotesque scenes and jump scares, with Doug Bradley's involvement adding credibility to the project. José and Ryan noted the game's potential for a gradual descent into horror, similar to Big Trouble in Little China, and expressed hope for an upcoming release date announcement.
Temple of the Killer Tiger Monkeys
Ryan and José discussed the audio drama "Temple of the Killer Tiger Monkeys," which features original Cenobite actors including Doug Bradley, Simon Bamford, and Nicholas Vince. They agreed to create a future podcast episode about the series, potentially including an interview with Simon Banford. The conversation also covered Ghanaian movie posters, specifically a Hellraiser poster by artist Heavy J, which is now available for purchase through Deadly Prey Gallery. Finally, they mentioned upcoming Hellraiser and Nightbreed conventions featuring the Cenobite actors.
Horror Conventions and Content Planning
José and Ryan discussed upcoming horror conventions, including Mad Monster Party Arizona in July 2026 and Days of the Dead events in Chicago and Atlanta. They expressed interest in meeting Peter Atkins at the Chicago event in November 2026, with both planning to discuss time off work to attend. José also mentioned upcoming content plans, including a book club discussion of "The Body Politic" from Books of Blood Volume 4 and a vote on a 1987 movie to compete against Hellraiser.
Horror Movies Discussion
Ryan and José discussed various horror movies, including The Lost Boys, Prince of Darkness, The Gate, Bad Taste, Angel Heart, Beaks, and Iron Warrior. They shared their opinions on these films, with José expressing a preference for Bad Taste due to its chaotic nature. Ryan mentioned his interest in watching Prince of Darkness, The Gate, or Angel Heart again. They also briefly discussed actor Stephen Dorff's role in The Gate and his appearance in Blade. The conversation concluded with José mentioning Nicholas Vince's recent campaign for the Green Party in the UK elections.
UK Elections and Media Discussion
José and Ryan discussed recent local elections in the UK, with Ryan encouraging José to vote for Nicholas Vince in future elections. They then talked about editing a podcast episode, noting that while some parts like screen sharing would be easy to edit out, removing fillers like "ums" would be more time-consuming. The conversation concluded with a discussion about a Hellraiser script booklet, comparing different versions and discussing whether certain autographs were real or printed.

AI Summary
Quick recap
The group discussed Clive Barker's short story "The Pornographer's Shroud" from Volume 3 of the Books of Blood, focusing on the protagonist Ronnie Glass's transformation into a vengeful ghost seeking to balance his moral universe after being wronged by a pornography ring. The story explored themes of sexual repression in British society and the corrupt underbelly of London's entertainment industry during the 1980s. The discussion included analysis of character motivations, the supernatural elements of Ronnie's ghostly form, and the story's dark humor. The podcasters also shared insights about the story's adaptation into a Tapping the Vein comic and discussed upcoming content including a 1978 movie commentary series where votes were still being collected between Superman and The Body Snatchers. The conversation ended with a light-hearted photo shoot using blankets as a creative way to represent the podcast's ghostly theme.
The Pornographer's Shroud: Moral Consequences
The group discussed Clive Barker's story "The Pornographer's Shroud" from Volume 3 of Books of Blood. José explained that the story explores how a man who builds his moral universe by denying the body faces consequences even after death, noting that Ronnie Glass, the protagonist, is an everyman who works for a pornography publisher but remains sexually prudish. Ryan and José discussed how the story reveals that Ronnie's moral judgments are flawed, as he believes sin can be corrected like an error in a ledger. The group agreed that the story is terrifying not just for its supernatural elements but also because Ronnie doesn't recognize his own evil, seeing himself as tidy and righteous.
McGuire's Greed and Retribution
The group discussed a story involving Michael McGuire, who discovers his boss's involvement in distributing explicit magazines. José explained that McGuire, who appears respectable but is driven by greed, becomes angry when he learns about his boss's illegal activities. The story critiques British society's repressive nature, as McGuire's public persona contrasts with his private actions. Ryan questioned why McGuire would visit the warehouse, given his knowledge of the illegal operations, and José suggested McGuire's curiosity and denial played a role. The discussion concluded with McGuire punching his boss in a fit of rage, only to face retaliation from McGuire's associates.
Ronnie's Fall and Path to Revenge
The group discussed a scenario involving Ronnie Glass, who was smeared by the media after being linked to a pornography case, despite not being directly involved. They analyzed how Ronnie's reputation was destroyed, his wife left him, and he felt a twisted sense of relief during his beating, viewing it as a form of punishment. The conversation also touched on Ronnie's transformation from feeling betrayed to seeking revenge, his struggle to obtain a gun in England, and his cold, calculated approach to planning murder after his wife's departure.
Ronnie Glass's Vengeful Journey
The group discussed the character Ronnie Glass and his journey of revenge after being wrongfully accused and framed by his criminal associates. They analyzed his cold-blooded killings of Henry B and Dennis Dork Lozati, noting his lack of conscience and methodical approach to settling scores. The discussion highlighted how Ronnie's actions not only avenged his own wrongs but also shook the underworld's power balance, with some respecting his courage while others condemned his brutality. The conversation also touched on Ronnie's missed opportunity for redemption by not leaving a letter to his wife to explain his innocence and the impact of his actions on innocent people.
Violence and Emotional Detachment
The group discussed a violent story involving Ronnie's murder by McGuire, who then casually returned to social activities afterward. They noted how the characters showed little emotional response to the violence, with the pathologist and his assistants engaging in trivial conversation while performing the autopsy. Ronnie's wife visited his body without much emotional display, and he later became frustrated by the disrespectful treatment during the autopsy, leading him to leave his body through his shroud and become a ghost-like figure.
Ronnie's Shroud Murder Spree
The group discussed a story involving Ronnie, who gains the ability to manipulate a shroud to create a semi-human form and uses this power to kill a pathologist. Ronnie later encounters McGuire in a sex shop, where McGuire is choked and killed by Ronnie, who then escapes. The story also follows McGuire's goons and their interactions with corrupt police officers, including a scene where one goon is beaten for pleasuring himself in the police station.
McGuire's Tragic End
The group discussed a scene involving McGuire, who is recovering from an attack and reflecting on his life while surrounded by portraits of his heroes. McGuire's wife and child visit, but after the dogs start barking, Ronnie, who is already on the property, attacks McGuire. Ronnie ultimately kills McGuire by jamming his shroud down McGuire's throat, then shoots McGuire's wife and Norton before being killed by the Shroud in front of McGuire's young daughter. The story then shifts to Ronnie seeking redemption by confessing to a priest, but Father Rooney is distracted by taking photographs with a woman named Natalie.
The Body Politik Adaptation Discussion
The group discussed the story "The Body Politik," focusing on its themes of suburban tranquility masking deeper secrets and its adaptation into a Tapping the Vein comic. They noted that the story would work better as a short film or part of an anthology series rather than a full-length feature. José mentioned that the story shares similarities with other Clyde Barker works, such as "Hell's Event" and "Pig Blood Blues." The discussion concluded with comments from Reddit users praising the story's pacing and Clive Barker's ability to make unusual ideas believable, as well as noting that the Mick Garris adaptation was not well-received.

Episode 427
dimanche 22 octobre 2023 • Duration 02:33:33
Welcome to the Clive Barker Podcast, and part 21 of our Dungeons and Dragons game, Jericho Squad 77, set in the capitol city of Yzordderrex in the second dominion. Squad 77 faces their deadliest battle yet, to clear their name and rid the 4th Dominion of a sea god that demands sacrifice.
Now Here's Bentley with a recap.
Bentley here. We just got through reporting to Jericho headquarters for updates, and we found out it was to extradite Richard Smitty to the 4th Dominion to be executed for the crime of murder. I'm sure this is all my fault. I'm gullible and trusting, and there were so many emergencies I never took the time to properly train them to be Jericho members. That should be me tied to that post. Now Richard is going to be sacrificed to the Sea God, unless we fight like hell to stop it.

426 : Commentary Classics - Valerie On The Stairs
Episode 426
dimanche 15 octobre 2023 • Duration 01:05:00
Edit: We've brought back this commentary classic we did back in 2017 to give it a proper episode number! The 2006 Master of Horror episode, Valerie on the Stairs, written and directed by Mich Garris and starring Tony Todd!
There aren't many of these commentaries left to do! You're listening to our commentary on the 2006 Masters of Horror episode "Valerie On The Stairs" written and directed by Mick Garris, based on a long treatment by Clive Barker, which you can find here.
Don't try to murder your buddy with a typewriter! Spin up your DVD, or play it from Netflix, iTunes, or wherever you find it, and try to think back on your life. Do you memories have sound? I'm not a doctor, but If no, you might be a fictional character.
Please note we had a technical issue in the middle of the episode where Jose's computer froze, so when that happens we will ask you to pause and back up to 29:56 on your movie before you continue.
- Episode 007 Interview with Tony Todd (Not Episode 8)
- Episode 017: Other Movies Part 2 ("Valerie On the Stairs" and The Plague)
And this podcast, having no beginning, will have no end.
