We begin a personal history of the revolution in my thinking from evolution to special creation spurred by the evidence of microbiology. Vital to this history is a text by geologist Allan G. Krill, FIXISTS VS. MOBILISTS IN THE GEOLOGY CONTEST OF THE CENTURY, 1844-1969. In this delightful book, Dr. Krill recounts the history of Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift, that was first ridiculed, then attacked, and finally accepted some 50 years after it was proposed. As plate tectonics, it now represents one of the foundational building blocks on which scientific geology is built. The book is available here:

We examine Lewis's essay, originally entitled "Onward Christian Spacemen" by his publisher, but renamed by Walter Hooper, "The Seeing Eye." In our series, "The Evident, Evidence and Faith," we also addressed the issue of why some find God everywhere, and some find Him nowhere, why for some everything is evidence for His existence, and for some there is no evidence. The search for Reality, Truth and Beauty either draws us ever deeper into the glorious Mystery, or claims to dissipate it in the pretense of knowledge. The first attitude is that of Socrates and Western theism, the latter that of gnostic scientism and atheism, which pervades our socio-cultural world today.

Jenny and I complete our series on Hegel. In this episode we discuss the "Ugly Hegel," those Hegelians who followed the logic of Hegel's positions to the devastation of our Western world. Lewis was a convert to Christianity from Idealism, and he was intimately acquainted with its pernicious thought-structures and seductive logic. The character of the great physicist, Weston, in the second book of the Space Trilogy, represents the pervasive influence of Hegelian doctrine within the academic world of his day. Uriah, Job ... and Frodo. Part of being human is passing moral judgments. There are proper and improper ways of doing this. We look at the story of David and Uriah, and of Job. These stories tempt us to judge God, which requires us to take HIS position, His moral authority, His righteousness. We do this same thing in judgment of our fellow human beings. In doing so, we set ourselves up in our arrogance AS GOD, the very position of Satan himself, the pathology of Cain. This arrogation of God's position becomes a central theme for us moving forward with the Christian Atheist. We exemplify it in Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS in the character of Frodo as he interacts with Gandalf.

In our series on atheism I discovered that credal atheists represent a very limited threat to theism, both because their intellectual position is weak, being ungrounded, and because what most Enlightenment atheists really want and how they act tends to betray their credal stance. This sort of atheist is only about 5% of the US population, though significantly more in Europe.

What our two-track Hegelian definition of atheism also reveals, though, is that there is a far more robust and pernicious manifestation of the spirit of atheism, one that has been with us for a very long time but has never reached such broad acceptance before in the Western world. Its modern incarnation, I claim, finds its origin in the philosophy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Rationality is a more expansive notion than mere intellect. I make the case that faith in God and Christ is a rational response in our world today, and that value (which is also part of human rationality) is a good basis on which to choose theism over atheism.

Jenny and I conclude our discussion on a phenomenon we've observed on the contemporary scene in which committed members of the political left find an issue that has "crossed the line" for them, and rebel from the proposed orthodoxy, usually seeing only this issue as problematic, or as having a particular origin in recent times that is wrong and must be addressed, but missing the larger sense in which these problems are the natural logical outplay of the logic of the left, the ideology of Hegelianism/Marxism/Critical Theory/Wokism.

 

"here's a question: does big picture, abstract thinking cause liberals to be less happy because they are removing themselves from the embodied here and now? After all, the ability to live in the moment and appreciate our lives as they exist does seem to be a key ingredient in day-to-day contentment. Or is it conservatives' concern with lasting marriage, strong family cohesiveness, and day-to-day sociality that tips the scales toward greater daily contentment and happiness?"   Catherine Caldwell-Harris, 2013

John's interview with Michael Wiseman of THE BIBLE SAYS WHAT?!? podcast.

 

Michael represents an atheist worldview that has not yet thought deeply enough about the issues to find the dependence of human reason on divine reason, and who rejects, as I did, the notion that atheism represents a faith position. I truly enjoyed chatting with him. He was warm and human, and my interactions with him both before and after the podcast were not just respectful but genuinely friendly. He has been hurt, I think, by churchianity and well-meaning Christians. God understands that, and the path from atheism back to Christ is, I think, a shorter and more direct one than that from a self-satisfied agnosticism. Michael seemed genuinely curious, and not just contemptuous as he often comes across. I liked him immediately, and found nothing in my interactions with him to contradict my initial impressions. Cheers, Michael! Keep asking, seeking and knocking!
