We didn't even plan anything for this episode because we KNEW we would exclusively be talking about the new WICKED MOVIE! Have we been changed FOR GOOD?!! Did we discover new surprising details about the story?? Will we make it through the episode without crying?! This one is a bit longer than usual, but we happen to think it's worth it! (Slight spoiler warnings if you haven't seen the movie— we tried to stay as spoiler free for part 2 as possible but PROCEED WITH CAUTION!)

Welcome back! We maaaaaay have upset the living ghost of Patti LuPone... we were talking about her and the power went out. Oopsieeeee! But no worries—we figured it out. (sorry for the audio quality!)

Jacob and Kalen start with some Halloween season madness, from early décor shopping to Kalen’s misadventure at Disneyland, which involved a mobile order, a twisted ankle, and a trip to urgent care. (Zach, you were a real one through it all.)

In our “Not This” segment, we unpack Patti LuPone’s MCU shade during a red carpet interview. What the heck, Patti? We compare her response with the positive attitude of Debra Jo Rupp and talk about the creative value superhero movies bring to pop culture.

La La Land debate alert! Is it a musical or not? We break down the film’s mix of diegetic and non-diegetic music, defend its storytelling, and compare its backlash to the Frozen phenomenon. Plus, Jacob reflects on how blockbuster superhero movies now serve as escapism in the same way musicals once did.

We went viral! Our Wicked theory video hit over 1 million views and and boy has it been a wild journey in the comments. Our AHA! moment about Madam Morrible controlling the weather in Oz, sparked widespread discussion, earning over 47,000 shares and 200 new followers in a week. THANK Y'ALL SO MUCH! Whether you agree or disagree, we appreciate the engagement ;)

We HAD to respond to some of them comments, tho... Jacob hilariously addressed a debate with a fan who brought their 6-year-old into the mix, while Kalen laments (again... seriously she won't shut up about it) on the importance of preserving storytelling magic— aka spoiler culture and why it still applies to this 20+ year old story.

We chat some more about the musical’s intricate storytelling, particularly in Act Two, and predict how the upcoming Wicked movie could address narrative gaps. We also had an epiphany about how the various offshoots of the world of Oz are similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as the multiple Spider-Man reboots, which has evolving cultural significance.

Jacob has an AMAZING superfan moment of the week, involving performing for Disney animation LEGENDS and hearing some truly fantastical stories from our childhood faves like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. & of course we couldn't leave you without a special holiday edition of VIOLENTLY MILLENNIAL!
