Ep. 260: The rise and fall of 2000s magazine Suede

Episode 260

vendredi 21 juin 2024Duration 26:43

Today I’m talking about Suede magazine – a magazine that came and went in a blaze of glory in the early 2000s but gave us just 4 issues.

The reason I’m talking about Suede is because while we only got 4 issues, that magazine absolutely became a new fashion bible for black women, women of colour, actually women of all skin colours.

In this episode I share more on Suede’s history inaugural issue, the team who made it happen and the huge impact the magazine had on black women and women of colour.

I discuss the rumours surrounding the magazine’s demise and I share an update I received via email from the magazine's former editor Suzanne Boyd.

Don’t forget my DMs are always open, so if you’d like to share an insight re Suede magazine, or anything else beauty related, find me @beautymepodcast on Instagram or @charisse_kenion on Threads.

Ep. 170: '90s Beauty Moments - Sharon Stone as Ginger McKenna in 1995 movie Casino

Episode 170

dimanche 18 décembre 2022Duration 09:38

Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is all about Sharon Stone’s magnificent portrayal of Ginger McKenna in Martin Scorsese’s 1995 film Casino.

In this episode I break down the retro looks we see in this film that’s based in the ‘80s, from the hair and makeup pros to my favourite beauty moments from the film. Apparently Sharon Stone was dead set on playing this character and I really think that comes through in the movie – it’s an absolute classic.

Ep. 169: '90s Beauty Moments - Missy Elliott's iconic video for 1997 song The Rain

Episode 169

samedi 17 décembre 2022Duration 09:47

If you’re a fan of ‘90s music then you need to check today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment: Missy Elliott’s video for The Rain, which came out in 1997, from her first album Supa Dupa Fly. Directed by the equally iconic director Hype Williams, this video is so ahead of its time and is a must-watch if you’ve never seen it before.

In this episode I break down the hair and beauty moments, including Missy's epic finger waves, and also share some insights into the black lipgloss and liner that we see in the video, which is also very on-trend today on social media.

Ep. 168: '90s Beauty Moments - R&B singer Aaliyah's video for her 1996 hit One In a Million

Episode 168

vendredi 16 décembre 2022Duration 12:34

Aaliyah Dana Haughton released her second album, also called One In A Million in 1996 and with six hit songs coming from that album, it’s at that point in time that she really took over the charts and became a major inspiration for young black girls when it came to how they dressed and how they wore their hair and makeup.

Today's '90s Beauty Moment is all about the video for Aaliyah's single One In A Million because it's the perfect blend of '90s fashion, beauty, hair and music video influences.

Ep. 167: '90s Beauty Moments - how the Spice Girls and their Girl Power took over the world

Episode 167

jeudi 15 décembre 2022Duration 08:03

Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is all about the power – the so-called Girl Power – of the Spice Girls, five women, chosen from hundreds to take on the boy bands of the mid-90s.

In this episode I break down the looks that the world would go on to expect from Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisolm and Victoria Beckham (formerly Victoria Adams.) I also explain the super simple reason that we would go on to refer to these adult women as Baby, Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Posh for the rest of their lives.

Ep. 165: '90s Beauty Moments - ‘Black Barbie’ and Queen of Rap Lil’ Kim’s ‘90s beauty influence

Episode 165

mardi 13 décembre 2022Duration 11:55

For me, Lil’ Kim, AKA Kimberly Denise Jones, is someone who should get all the awards when it comes to being iconic across the board – the hairstyles you’ve played with, the makeup you’ve experimented with, even the clothes you’re wearing and the music you’re listening to – Lil’ Kim was arguably the blueprint for it all back in the ‘90s.

In this episode I’m firmly sticking with the Lil’ Kim of the ‘90s – one, because there’s a lot to discuss when it comes to the Brooklyn rapper, and two, because amongst all that information, there is also the often discussed topic of her lack of self love, which some even refer to as internalised hate for how she looks.

So in this episode I’m focusing on the image that first caught our attention, and how she would go on to influence her fans, the music industry and the fashion houses.

I’ll be back with another in-depth episode though, so watch this space. In the meantime, I’d love to know what you think of this series – have you been enjoying it?

Ep. 164: '90s Beauty Moments - Jennifer Aniston’s iconic haircut – The ‘Rachel’ from Friends

Episode 164

lundi 12 décembre 2022Duration 06:55

It’s a hairstyle that has its own Wikipedia page; that’s how iconic the Rachel haircut was. It was first seen on screen, on Aniston’s character Rachel Green in Friends in 1995, near the end of the first season in the episode entitled The One with the Evil Orthodontist and she wore it until the third season.

In this episode I focus on how big the influence of the cut was, and why Jennifer’s longterm hairdresser Chris McMillan designed it specifically for the star – even though she never loved it!

I’d love to know what you think of this series – have you been enjoying it?
