| Can We Still Believe in God? Answering 10 Contemporary Challenges to Christianity w/ Craig Blomberg | 05 Oct 2024 | 00:50:21 | |
Dr. Craig Blomberg discusses several possible objections to the Christian understanding of God from the perspective of a New Testament scholar. We cover suffering and evil in the world, the notion of hell, and the relationship between slavery, gender roles, and homosexuality. Dr. Blomberg also considers miracles, mythology, violence, and biblical contradictions. I apologize for the poor audio quality. NOTES: In the interview at 20:55 I prompt Dr. Blomberg to address the wish that the New Testament would have prohibited believers from holding slaves altogether. Blomberg responds by considering the social upheaval this would cause throughout the whole Roman empire, describing it in terms of a sudden change brought about by edict, affecting the lowest ranking to the highest ranking slaves. However, this seems to miss the point since at the time of the writing of the New Testament documents Christians comprised a small and relatively powerless part of the population. The prohibition of slave owning by Christians would have only gradually (and indirectly) affected the Roman empire as Christianity spread little by little. George Yancey defines America's race problem, considers the meaning, strengths, and weaknesses of antiracism and colorblindness, takes a look at systemic racism and racial disparities and examines how diversity, equity, and inclusion programs often function. Yancey explains his alternative view as mutual accountability and marshals evidence to support it. | Christian Intentional Community and Religious Vitality with Dr. Mark Killian | 01 May 2023 | 01:16:04 | |
We discuss the nature of Christian intentional communities, religious vitality, the 5 historic waves of Christian intentional communities (CIC) in the U.S., the biblical basis for CICs, the components of CICs, the key strengths and weaknesses of CICs, as well as the structural, organizational, and individual explanations for religious vitality. We also consider the relationship of CICs to society and the greater church and examine the theme of alienation. The issues of economic sharing, agency, charisma, authority, in-group and out-group orientation, strictness, leniency, and commitment are all covered. Finally, as a pastor, church planter, and sociologist Dr. Killian offers his ideas on how churches can grow in vitality. Intentional communities play such a vital role in the church yet they can easily overdo it in their effort to foster greater togetherness. Killian includes both beautiful examples of the church as family as well as absurd examples of overreach and oversharing. We consider primary ideas starting with God's goodness and creation and move on to continuity with New Testament ethics, genre, economics, and God's concern for the marginalized. Provan discusses his schema of creational, stiff-necked, and ritual law as well as the post-flood period, the conquest, and the prophets. Provan applies OT ethics to the contemporary world with his notion of "principled pluralism". I hope you enjoy the interview!
