| Technology and Publishing | 17 sept. 2020 | 00:57:50 | |
Technology and Publishing It’s crazy to think there was a time not too long ago where the only way to read a book was by picking up a physical object and reading real, paper pages. Or when audiobooks were called ‘books on tape’ because you had to pop one cassette at a time into a tape deck in order to hear your favorite book read to you by a narrator. Times have changed fast. Not only with how we consume books, but also with how they are published. With things moving as quickly as they are, what could come next? Tune in to this week’s episode to hear how the guys think technology will continue to change the publishing industry. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. | Hooking the Reader with Your First Chapter | 13 août 2020 | 00:52:41
Hooking the Reader with Your First Chapter If you’re walking through the grocery store and an employee offers you a free sample of a new brand of cheese. You’re likely to taste it. If you like the cheese, you might buy some. But if it tastes terrible, you won’t buy the product. Reading behaviors aren’t any different. Hooking the reader with your first chapter is a critical and yet overlooked element of being an independent author or publisher. A snazzy cover and singing blurb only gets you so far. If the story doesn’t deliver, you’ll lose the sale. Lucky for us, we know readers always start the book with chapter one. Join J. and Zach as they discuss the anatomy of a strong first chapter so you’ll know what to do and what to avoid in yours. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. | Sharpening the Saw: Doing the Things We Hate Doing | 30 juil. 2020 | 00:51:36
Sharpening the Saw: Doing the Things We Hate Doing As career authors or even part-time writers, we all have to do things we hate. In a perfect world, authors could sit in a cabin in the woods, happily slapping the typewriter without a care or concern. But that’s not reality, and with the exception of a few authors, it’s never been how the industry works. “Sharpening the saw” is an important routine in any writer’s life. Or it should be. Like a craftsman, sometimes you have to stop working and maintain the tools that allow you to create whether those are analog or digital. Join the fellas as they discuss some of those pesky tasks that need to be done with suggestions on how to make it just a little less painful. Launching an Amazon Bestselling Fiction Book in 2020 Indie authors often talk about the “gold rush” era of self-publishing when a smaller pool of authors and Amazon’s looser algorithms made it easier to sell books on their platform. Zach recently launched the first book in a new series to bestseller status on Amazon, and on this episode of the podcast, he breaks down what he did and how he has kept the sales going after the dreaded “30-Day Cliff.” The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. | The Three Story Method Influencer Series: Story | 27 févr. 2020 | 00:49:24
The Three Story Method Influencer Series: Story In the fourth of this special 5-part series, Zach and J. examine Story by Robert McKee. They discuss how his ideas changed the way Hollywood approached modern storytelling. In addition, Zach asks J. how he incorporated elements of Story in Three Story Method and the ways they impact novel writing. Although not strictly a methodology like the Hero’s Journey or Virgin’s Promise, McKee’s seminal work explores critical elements of storytelling such as plot vs. character, the importance of choice, and theme. Heavily influenced by many of the ideas in Story, J. and Zach take a deep dive into some of the more abstract concepts and explain how they relate to long-form storytelling. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon share their struggles and successes as full-time authors, advice for improving your writing craft, and honest discussions of what it takes to build a successful career as an author. The Three Story Method Influencer Series: The Virgin’s Promise In the third of this special 5-part series, Zach and J. examine the Virgin’s Promise developed by Kim Hudson. They discuss how these ideas will change modern storytelling. In addition, Zach asks J. how he incorporated the Virgin’s Promise in Three Story Method and the ways they impact novel writing. The Virgin’s Promise provides an alternative to the monomyth, a non-linear story archetype that accentuates the duality of feminine and masculine energy. Being open to new ideas and techniques can yield great results and add tools to the novelists toolbox. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. The Three Story Method Influencer Series: The Hero’s Journey In the second of this special 5-part series, Zach and J. examine the Hero’s Journey as created by Joseph Cambpell and recreated by Christopher Vogler. They discuss how these ideas have influenced modern storytelling. In addition, Zach asks J. how he incorporated the Hero’s Journey in Three Story Method and the ways they impact novel writing. While some may believe that we’re transitioning out of the monomyth era, it’s still important to recognize the underlying story architecture that has become second nature for most of us. | The Three Story Method Influencer Series: Aristotle | 06 févr. 2020 | 00:48:52
The Three Story Method Influencer Series: Aristotle In the first of this special 5-part series, Zach and J. examine Poetics by Aristotle and how those ideas have influenced modern storytelling. In addition, Zach asks J. how he incorporated Aristotle’s ideas in Three Story Method and the ways they apply to novelists. From Wikipedia: Aristotle's Poetics (Greek: Περὶ ποιητικῆς; Latin: De Poetica;[1] c. 335 BC[2]) is the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory and first extant philosophical treatise to focus on literary theory.[3] In it, Aristotle offers an account of what he calls "poetry" (a term that derives from a classical Greek term, ποιητής, that means "poet; author; maker" and in this context includes verse drama – comedy, tragedy, and the satyr play – as well as lyric poetry and epic poetry). They are similar in the fact that they are all imitations but different in the three ways that Aristotle describes:
In examining its "first principles", Aristotle finds two: 1) imitation and 2) genres and other concepts by which that of truth is applied/revealed in the poesis. His analysis of tragedy constitutes the core of the discussion.[4] Although Aristotle's Poetics is universally acknowledged in the Western critical tradition, "almost every detail about his seminal work has aroused divergent opinions".[5] The work was lost to the Western world for a long time. It was available in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance only through a Latin translation of an Arabic version written by Averroes.[6] The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon share their struggles and successes as full-time authors, advice for improving your writing craft, and honest discussions of what it takes to build a successful career as an author. Creating characters who aren’t like you is key to making your story world feel real and lived in. Our world would be a boring place if every person was exactly the same. As such, so can the worlds in your books if all your characters are.
