In 2022, Kaitlyn Braun began contacting doulas with a harrowing story involving a sexual assault and it’s resulting pregnancy. Over 40 doulas ultimately became involved, many providing emotional, physical and financial support before discovering that Braun's story was built on lies. The case would eventually lead to dozens of criminal charges, a prison sentence, many twists and turns, and some of Canada’s most bizarre and disturbing headlines. In this episode, Jordan is joined by filmmaker Nathalie Bibeau, writer and director of the new three-part documentary series Doula: A True Crime to discuss the extraordinary case, the impact on Braun's victims, and the difficult question at the center of the story: why did she do it? A Nova Scotia teacher is facing a disturbing series of criminal charges involving students at a Pictou County school. Matthew Donahoe, 53, was arrested in September 2026 and charged with 10 offences, including sexual assault, sexual interference, assault by choking, assault with a weapon, and administering a noxious substance. Court documents indicate the allegations involve four students and incidents said to have occurred during the first week of the school year. In this episode, Jordan and Madeleine examine the timeline of the investigation, what the court documents reveal, Donahoe’s release conditions, and questions surrounding his history as an educator. They also discuss accounts from former students who have since come forward publicly with their own experiences. The charges against Matthew Donahoe are allegations that have not been tested in court. He has not been convicted of these offences and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. In August 2026, Edmonton father Scot MacDermid disappeared with his two children, George and Lesley, setting off a search that would stretch beyond Alberta and raise troubling questions about an already bitter family dispute. But the disappearance did not come out of nowhere. Years earlier, Scot and the children’s mother, Edilenia, had built a life between Canada and the Dominican Republic before their relationship eventually fractured amid allegations of domestic violence, protection orders, and an international custody battle. In this episode, we trace the relationship, Edilenia’s allegations, Scot’s previous attempt to take the children to the Dominican Republic, and the current search for Scot MacDermid and his missing children. In the small eastern Ontario town of Smiths Falls, a series of missing men began to fuel widespread rumours, fear, and suspicion about what was happening beneath the surface of the community. For years, families waited for answers while police searched for evidence and residents traded theories about whether the cases were somehow connected. Then, just one month after a large reward was offered for information, the investigation took a dramatic turn. There would be arrests, murder charges, and the discovery of human remains on a remote rural property outside town. But that was only the beginning… As investigators continued searching the land, more bodies would be found, and attention would turn to the disturbing history of the property itself, raising new questions about how far back this story really goes, and how many secrets may still be buried there. Six-year-old Lilly Sullivan and her four-year-old brother Jack Sullivan disappeared from their rural home in Lansdowne Station, Nova Scotia, on May 2, 2025, after their parents reported waking up and finding the children missing. Despite Nova Scotia’s largest ground search involving police, volunteers, dogs, drones, and helicopters, no trace of the children has been found. In this episode we hear from the children’s mother, Malehya Brooks-Murray, for the first time in fifteen months. Malehya recently participated in a CBC Interview, and like every aspect of this case, it raises as many questions as it answers. Canada has an emergency alert system capable of reaching millions of people within seconds, but when a vulnerable person goes missing, whether that system can be used often depends on where they disappear. In this episode of The Canadian Gothic, we are joined by Jennifer Ball, founder of the Project Indigo movement, and Ronald DeGagne the advocate behind the Darius’ Law petition, to examine the gaps in Canada’s emergency alert system. Jennifer discusses how the disappearance of Parker Wells inspired her advocacy, while Ronald explains how the disappearance of six-year-old Darius MacDougall pushed him to call for change. Together, they discuss why AMBER Alerts do not cover many vulnerable missing-person cases, the patchwork of Silver and vulnerable-person alert policies across Canada, and what a standardized national system could look like. On July 30, 2026, the search for 11-year-old Parker Wells came to a heartbreaking end when his body was discovered in a drainage pipe in northeast Calgary. Parker, who was autistic, neurodivergent and nonverbal, disappeared from his day home on July 16, prompting one of the largest search efforts in Calgary's recent history. Hundreds of police officers, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams, trained volunteers and members of the public dedicated countless hours to finding him. In the end, new evidence led investigators back to an area near Deerfoot Trail, where Parker was found. In this episode of Canadian Gothic, we examine the final days of the search, the discovery that brought hope to an end, what investigators have revealed about how Parker was found, and the extraordinary community response that rallied around one little boy and his family. On July 16, 2026, 11-year-old Parker Wells disappeared from his day home in Calgary. Parker is autistic, neurodivergent and nonverbal, and operates more like a 2-3 year old. His disappearance has prompted an enormous search involving police, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams and hundreds of volunteers. Surveillance footage has helped investigators trace some of Parker’s movements, but major questions remain about where he went and how he has remained missing despite such an extensive effort. In this episode of Canadian Gothic, we will focus on what is currently known, what remains unclear and how the public can help find Parker Wells. On October 18, 2025, 25-year-old Eli Wood was last seen by his family on a video call that ended just prior to midnight. Something they did daily as a way to stay connected while Eli was attending university in Kitchener. Hours later, firefighters responded to a fire in Eli’s apartment. But Eli wasn’t there… and hasn’t been seen since. Police say the fire was arson and that foul play is suspected in Eli’s disappearance, but months later, little more than that has been revealed. Important questions like what happened that night? why was the fire considered targeted? and where is Eli? all remain unanswered as his family pleads for answers, community searches continue, and police say an investigation remains active. In this episode of the Canadian Gothic, Madelayne and Jordan discuss what we know and what we don’t know about the disappearance of Eli Wood. In April 2017, 59-year-old Debbie Ann Hutchinson vanished from Sydney, Nova Scotia. Days later, her white Kia Magentis was found burning in a wooded area not far from her home. In this episode, we are joined by Debbie’s estranged daughter, Colette Deveaux to discuss her mother’s unsolved homicide, and the complicated grief that followed. Collette shares what it is like to mourn a parent while also carrying painful memories from childhood, and how Debbie’s murder forced her into an impossible emotional position: seeking justice for her mother while still reckoning with trauma caused by that same relationship. Shortly after the release of the previous episode in this series, I connected with someone very close to Emily Bailey’s story. He offered to share startling new details that may shed further light on what happened in the days leading up to her disappearance. Brandon Hunter is the father of one of Emily’s daughters. Listeners will remember his name from earlier episodes, as he was the person who reported Emily missing to Hamilton Police. In our conversation, Brandon explains that he had been in regular contact with Emily before she disappeared. He also shares information Emily told him in those final days, information that ultimately led him to show up at Jeff’s door shortly after the missing person report was filed. In this episode we are joined by Brandon Hunter for a revealing discussion about the disappearance of his close friend, and the mother of his child, Emily Bailey. Shortly after the release of the prior episode in this series the show was contacted by someone claiming to be a close friend of Emily's named Nicole Margerison. Nicole offered to fill in many of the blanks related to Emily's last known whereabouts and possibly shed some light on the circumstances related to her disappearance. Margerison was one of the last people to see Emily, was polygraphed by Hamilton police, and provided investigators with some disturbing information regarding the man she last saw Emily with. In this episode Nicole and I will discuss many new details related to the still unexplained disappearance of her friend Emily Bailey. Despite the instability of her lifestyle, Emily was reliable. She posted regularly to social media and had scheduled visits with her children that she would NEVER miss. But she did miss one in January and very quickly it was determined that no one had seen or heard from her in over a week and the trail she left behind is obscured by conflicting statements of the unreliable witnesses to her last known days. All we know for certain is that her family is desperate to find her. In this episode we hear from one of the broken hearted loved ones left behind. I'll be joined by Ben Bailey, Emily's brother, to discuss the still unexplained disappearance of then 23 year old Emily Bailey.
