E65: Why, When, and Where of Storytelling for Social Impact Communications25 Sep 202400:19:24

Do you gravitate towards statistics over storytelling in your social impact communications?

You’re not alone – in a Stanford study, students were asked to prepare a 1 minute speech about crime. Students used an average of 3 statistics in their 1 minute speech, but only 1 in 10 students told a story.

Just 10 minutes later, only 5% of people remembered the data shared.  However, 63% of attendees remembered the stories.

In this episode, we're going to explore the why, when, and where of using storytelling in your social impact communications to drive your mission forward.

We discuss:
[01:17] Why storytelling is important
[06:28] When to use storytelling as an advocacy tool
[11:03] The 3 stories to have and share as a changemaker
[14:16] Where to share your stories to drive your mission forward

REPLAY - Practicing Inclusion on Purpose with Ruchika Tulshyan16 Aug 202300:49:20

I am a huge Ruchika Tulshyan fangirl. You'll learn why as you listen to this replay of our conversation from last year!
Since then, Ruchika has operationalized a new way to highlight the voices of historically underrecognized folks with her #AmplifyJuly campaign. As she shared, if you have a platform and influence, you have a responsibility to use your privilege in a tangible, actionable way to amplify the voices of others.
If you are building your influence and thought leadership, how could you take a page out of Ruchika’s book and turn over the mic?
We touch upon this in our conversation from last year, as well as recognizing systems of oppression as the cause of imposter syndrome, reframing mindset barriers around leadership and visibility, and how to make inclusion a daily practice in your life.
In this episode:
[03:37] Ruchika’s story of becoming a guide in inclusion
[14:15] Recognizing systems of oppression as the cause of imposter syndrome
[20:54] Supporting women of color entrepreneurs and executives
[22:49] Reframing mindset barriers around leadership and visibility

E40: Measure the Magic: Tracking Resonance Instead of Reach05 Jul 202300:20:19

Resonance > reach. And, quality is more important than quantity - which is easier said than embodied. This is where we have to unlearn the deep, entrenched inclination towards MORE. Towards always scaling, producing the biggest results, or having access to the most eyeballs and earholes.
None of that is actually necessary (and it may not even be helpful to your goals.)
This episode is about “measuring the magic” when it comes to thought leadership and visibility efforts. I’ll share what makes content resonate with your audience and some clues on how we can find the signals of resonance on LinkedIn and through email marketing.

E39: Are You Cultivating Your Creativity? How to Work Your "Creativity Muscle" for Changemaking Work21 Jun 202300:20:23

Creativity is a skill that builds our influence, recognition, and changemaking capacity, and it’s not just for the reasons you might think.
Without creativity, we can’t imagine our way out of the status quo. It’s our ability to dream up a new kind of future that will spark the just transition that we're working towards.
If you work on a problem you are deeply passionate about, it’s your creativity along with the recognition you’re building as a thought leader that can spark the ripple effect you're after.
In this episode, I talk about how to work out your ‘creativity muscle’ and keep it strong for your changemaking work as a coach, consultant, service provider, or nonprofit leader.

E37: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome while Building Your Thought Leadership Brand17 May 202300:20:41

Imposter thoughts stop so many impactful entrepreneurs and executives from getting visible and building their thought leadership – especially on a platform like LinkedIn.
But the most effective and long-lasting way to build trust and community as an expertise-based small business is to SHARE that expertise publicly, imperfectly, clearly, and proudly!
In this solo episode, I outline Dr. Valerie Young's five flavors of imposter thoughts and how they specifically show up for mission-driven humans building their thought leadership brand.  More importantly, I share actionable reframes you can practice to build new thoughts in the moment and serve your people in a deeper way.
Showing up with love and positive intention is enough, because the reader, the ideal client, the beloved human being I am trying to reach does not need me to be perfect, they need me to be ME.  That’s all I can give to them, and that is enough.

E33: Breaking Down The Barriers Behind Batching LinkedIn Content22 Mar 202300:20:43

If trying to publish your perspective on LinkedIn between Zoom calls, Slack pings, and Outlook dings isn’t working for you, then batching content for LinkedIn may.
I did a LinkedIn poll to find out what keeps social impact leaders from batching thought leadership content. In this episode, I provide real examples of how you can overcome those barriers to easefully stay visible and attract the opportunities meant for you.
“Start thinking of your LinkedIn as a lighthouse. Content is the fuel that keeps the light on, so the ships (or rather the people) can actually find you and moor safely into the solution that you provide.” - Tania Bhattacharyya

In this episode:
[03:53] Barrier #4 - “My creative process keeps me from batching.”
[09:07] Barrier #3 - “My content may not stay relevant if I batch”
[13:21] Barrier #2 - “Writer’s block and not knowing what to say”

E32: Beat Imposter Thoughts and Content Blocks With a High Five File08 Mar 202300:18:44

Imposter thoughts are natural. Human psychology sets us up to think about past negative experiences more than the kudos, compliments, and high fives flowing our way. We internalize those negative experiences into stories that we continue to tell ourselves - making it tough to show up as an embodied leader and guide.

My favorite tool to beat imposter thoughts (AND content blocks) is the High Five file. Keeping track of client testimonials, positive speaker feedback, and DM’s about your impactful content helps you show up and share content from the perspective of the leader you’re trying to embody. It’s also a source of inspiration for thought leadership content ideas that can help you show up consistently.

My gift to you: your own free copy of my High Five File template for Notion.

“Negativity bias, imposter thoughts, and systematically limited beliefs like perfectionism keep us from showing up. So, we leave transformational opportunities at the table because we’re not AT the table to get these opportunities.” - Tania Bhattacharyya

E27: The Do’s and Don'ts of Naming Your Business And Vision with Emily Grubman14 Dec 202200:41:26

Emily Grubman approaches naming with the big-picture thinking of a brand strategist, the linguistic lust of a writer, and the sober practicality of a trademark lawyer (although she’s the first to tell you she’s definitely not a lawyer).
She partners with early-stage startups and “solopreneurs” to name and launch their vision. But it’s not just about naming your business. As you get more visible as a thought leader and go-to voice, you may be naming new offers in your offer suite, fundraising campaigns, podcasts, books, and more.
So, join us by the Campfire Circle today as Emily does a deep dive into naming strategy, providing practical advice on what to focus on and what to avoid.

“The thing you’re naming is new, but thinking as far ahead as possible helps you understand how you want it to grow and expand. You want to give it that longevity to flex as needed to encompass all the things you want to achieve with it.” - Emily Grubman

We discussed:

[02:00] How Emily became the naming guide she is today

[04:47] The art and the science of naming

[07:30] Getting into a naming mindset and what you should focus on

[12:25] Naming as a pre-launch startup or independent consultant

[26:54] Emily’s process for naming her own consultancy, Title Case

[30:10] The “do no harm” aspect of naming

[36:55] Emily’s big, dreamy vision

E26: The Visibility Mindset for AAPI Leaders with Bernice Chao & Jessalin Lam30 Nov 202200:39:28

Bernice Chao and Jessalin Lam are the co-authors of The Visibility Mindset, a book that explores a variety of stereotypes and barriers faced by Asian professionals, including the bamboo ceiling and the model minority myth.
Their book provides straightforward and real-life leadership examples to help AAPI and allies navigate pitfalls and challenges as we move forward in growing our visibility, careers, and businesses.

“I always give the comparison of the very American idiom of “the squeaky wheel gets the grease”. I was taught “the loudest duck gets shot.” I was taught “the loudest bamboo gets cut” and “the tallest nail gets hammered down … so, the Visibility Mindset is really understanding: ‘Yes, we get you. We get that this is hard. We know that this isn't just you. And you're not alone.’”

We discussed:

[01:46] The story of how their collaboration emerged

[06:23] Tips to create deep connections through (virtual) coffee chats

[10:09] The Visibility Mindset and the unique challenges that AAPI face

[17:37] Leveraging allies, asking for help, and being vulnerable

[25:39] Advice for younger Bernice and Jessalin

[30:23] The process of birthing a book out into the world

[34:17] Jessalin and Bernice’s big dreamy vision for the future

E25: Four Barriers to Visibility on LinkedIn (and How to Overcome them)16 Nov 202200:25:41

In this solo episode, I’m talking about the four most common barriers to thought leadership and visibility on LinkedIn that I hear and work with and offering up suggestions that have been helpful for me personally and for my clients: from both a strategy perspective and a ‘systematically limited beliefs’ perspective.

You already have the lived experience, the stories, the passion, and the credibility to spark a ripple effect toward that future. Sometimes we need a little strategy and support in remembering our magic and individual capacity for change-making.

In this episode:

[01:34] Self-limiting beliefs vs. systematically limited beliefs

[06:23] Belief 1: I don’t have anything to say.

[10:53] Belief 2: I feel invisible and forgotten about on LinkedIn.

[16:29] Belief 3: I’m not sure my opinions are worth sharing.

[20:38] Belief 4: Showing up on LinkedIn feels overwhelming

Kamilah Martin builds safe & empowering communities for Black women and other women of color who have recently transitioned to nonprofit consulting. She navigated the nonprofit world herself for twenty years and in 2020, with the world feeling turned upside down, she resigned from an organization whose lived values no longer aligned with hers. Join us by the Campfire Circle for a gorgeous conversation about Kamilah’s story, her vision for changing the nonprofit sector, tips on how to grow your social impact consultancy by being your biggest customer, and Kamilah’s advice and lived experience on planning in-person retreats for your clientele.

E23: What Transferable Skills Will Power Your Brand and Business?19 Oct 202200:23:25

The skills you've gained up to this point are completely valid. But too often, women aren’t sure if they can “own” previous experiences from their full-time jobs in their thought leadership content, now that they’re consultants, service providers, or coaches.
As in, if it wasn't explicitly in our job title, we don't have permission to say we've got expertise in it.
In this solo episode, I’m sharing how our transferable skills can set us up for success. I also talk about some insights of how a career in social impact set me up for entrepreneurship.
How can you factor in your own lived experiences into the ways you show up and shine in the world?

E22: Gain Space in Your Calendar to Grow Your Thought Leadership Brand with Tatiana O'Hara05 Oct 202200:36:31

Tatiana O’Hara is an agency and team operations coach who doesn’t just help create organizational charts or SOPs. She helps people recover from the grind: patterns of overwork, perfectionism, over-delivery, and ongoing worry that if we don’t do it all ourselves, things will fall apart.
"Even with the concept of being booked and busy, you slowly start to link your value to your output and don't even realize it. You get to a point where you can't output anymore because you're burnt out. But then you start to think you're less valuable as a person and as a business owner." - Tatiana O’Hara
Addiction to the grind is real, and it takes guidance to find recovery.
So, join us by the Campfire Circle for an episode that will change your relationship with your business, help you gain space in your calendar to grow your thought leadership brand, and step away from your business when you want to (so it can run without you.)

We discussed:

[01:52] Tatiana’s journey from corporate to consultant and coach
[04:33] How to know if you’re a grindaholic
[07:49] Figuring out your zone of genius and what to delegate

E20: Find your Niche by Serving Your Past Self with Joy Malek07 Sep 202200:39:48

“That may seem a little navel-gazing to some people, but I'm the person I know best. And so, you know, I've found that when I write authentically and honestly and with vulnerability to what I need to hear, that's what other people respond to.” - Joy Malek

E18: Marketing with courage, love, and compassion with Emily Roh10 Aug 202200:43:03

Emily Roh is an anti-racist life coach and facilitator for people of color and organizations who want to make the world a more just and equitable place. Emily works with her clients to unpack internalized white supremacy and transform their relationships with themselves through courageous self-compassion. And I can personally attest to her magic!

This episode may change the way you look at yourself and the way you show up in your social impact work. Emily and I talk about getting out of our heads and tapping into the wisdom of our bodies, marketing our businesses by being rooted in our values, acknowledging our influences, building collaborative, relationship-driven businesses, and much more.

“My work is really about healing and liberation. So, whatever white supremacy is doing … whatever capitalism and colonization are doing, I'm interested in looking at what's the opposite of that. E14: Four Questions to Build your Thought Leadership Brand15 Jun 202200:21:37

After thirteen episodes of The Campfire Circle podcast, I noticed certain questions kept coming up in conversation with my guests.  I realized I'm actually asking about the key points of how they express their thought leadership.
“Thought leadership [...] is where we consistently tap into our passion, experience, and credibility to build trust and community as we imagine and shape the future together for the better.”
I’m dedicating this solo episode to those key points because if you ask yourself these same questions, you’ll be well on your way to building your own thought leadership brand.
“I want to know about what lived experiences you endured and dreamed through and worked your way out of, because you now have a roadmap to share with other people. And the funny thing that you’ll notice as you start sharing your personal brand story, is that it’s about you but it’s bigger than you. It contains the pieces that motivate other people to join you on behalf of your shared vision.”

In this episode:
[02:10] What is thought leadership and why does it matter?
[05:00] Sharing your origin story (or what you’ve grown through)
[10:15] Uncovering your unique, transformative framework
[12:31] A vision directs your thought leadership
[16:10] Nurturing a community instead of an audience
