The Magic Of Teaching A Series (vs. drop in classes) with Lauren Enright17 Oct 202201:19:30

Teaching drop in classes can be fun. You never know who you’re going to see in class, you start fresh every time & students can come and go as they please. However, teaching drop in classes also has it’s limitations; it’s hard to progress or build from week to week, or build a strong container as the students change from week to week.

One alternative to teaching drop in classes is THE SERIES. A predetermined number of classes, held together by a strong theme in which students register in advance to attend the whole shebang. In today’s episode I speak with Lauren Enright - yoga teacher, doula, and coach who has successfully mastered the series model of teaching classes, and agreed to come on the show today to share how she did it.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • How Lauren went from studying neuroscience to teaching highschool students to running a business as a doula & yoga teacher.
  • How Lauren built her confidence to promote herself and her work
  • The magic of teaching a 6 week class series (vs. drop in classes)
  • Why 6-8 weeks is the sweet spot for setting up your class series
  • How working backwards, repetition & focusing on community can make your series a massive success
  • Lauren’s daily routine + how she stays balanced as a mom, wife, teacher, doula, coach & business owner

Ritual As Remedy with Mara Branscombe03 Oct 202201:11:36

👉 Kajabi For Yoga Teachers

Episode Description:

I’m always doing rituals. Before my morning practice. Before I see clients, teach a class or record an interview. Bigger events get bigger rituals. And to be honest, I’ve never given it much thought, except for the fact that it’s something I like to do, and so I do it. However, when today's guest, Mara Branscombe, reached out to me to talk about her new book, Ritual As Remedy, I was intrigued.

ABOUT MARA

Mara Branscombe is a mother, writer, yogi, artist, teacher, mindfulness leader, ceremonialist and spiritual coach. She is the author of “Ritual As Remedy: Embodied Practices For Soul Care.”  Mara is passionate about weaving the art of mindfulness, self-care, creativity, mind–body practices, and earth-based rituals into her life and work, and she has been leading community ceremony since 2000. An adventurous spirit, Mara has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, trekked across the Himalayas, studied yoga in India, planted trees in Canada’s north, lived off the grid in a remote cabin in the woods, worked as a Waldorf (Steiner School) teacher, and then found her passion for dance and choreography. All the while yoga, meditation, mysticism and ritual have been at the heart of Mara’s journey. Her trainings in the Incan Shaman lineage and the Pagan tradition have greatly inspired her life’s work of earth-based, ceremonial, intentional, and heart-centered living and loving. Mara currently lives in Vancouver, Canada with her husband and two daughters.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mara’s morning ritual & what a typical work day looks like
  • What makes something a ritual
  • Soul care vs. self care
  • The benefits of ritual - what’s the point?
  • Why letting go of the outcome is an essential part of the creative process of life
  • Why Mara needed to commit to self-publishing her book, before she found a publisher
  • How to trust your own intuition, and a story about firewood
  • Why creating one small thing every day for a month can create magic
  • Mara’s best advice for folks who are stepping out on their own as entrepreneurs for the first time

Here's Proof Every Yoga Teacher Needs An Email List07 Feb 202200:22:53

👉 ZERO-50 Email Challenge

“I have 69 subscribers, have been able to offer online yoga to a growing group of students, and have since received $2962 in payments. Not bad considering I have just jumped in without a business plan or any real direction.” - Natalie Haider, Psychologist, Yoga Teacher & Yoga Therapist in Sydney, Australia.

See that? Natalie made nearly $3000 with a list of under 100 people. Nat wrote that after taking a free, 5 day challenge with me on growing your email list. I’ll link to it at the bottom of the page if you wanna check it out.

But the cool thing is, Nat’s results aren’t a fluke…for every $1 you spend on email marketing, on average you generate $37 in revenue. That’s one heck of an ROI, which isn’t replicated anywhere else in digital marketing.

Understanding Vedic Astrology + 2020 Predictions with Mark Ashmore Ep. 2708 Jun 202001:33:29

On today’s show, I speak with my good friend, yoga teacher and astrologer - Mark Ashmore. Some of you might remember Mark from episode 0, where he interviewed me, and helped to introduce the show way back in November of last year. Mark and I have known each other for years, and have even led yoga & astrology workshops together. I was really excited to speak with Mark today about one of his passions - vedic astrology.

Jyotish, or vedic astrology traces its origins back to the rig veda and therefore, as Mark points out, speaks the same language as yoga and ayurveda. And while I know a lot of yoga teachers, myself included, are interested in Astrology, we are probably more familiar with western astrology. So, I’m pumped to have Mark on the show to speak about a system that aligns so closely with what we already practice and teach.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Why mark decided to make the switch from studying western astrology to vedic astrology
  • The main differences between western and vedic astrology
  • The astrology of 2020 from a vedic perspective
  • How to use knowledge of astrology wisely in teaching yoga
  • The meaning behind retrogrades
  • Tips for aligning business decisions with the astrology of the times

What is Yoga Alliance Doing To Support Its International Members? with Dr. Christa Kuberry and Catherine Marquette Ep.2625 May 202001:16:15

Today on the show, I speak with Dr. Krista Kuberry and Catherine Marquette of Yoga Alliance.

My intention with this interview is to ask the questions that you, Yoga Alliance’s international members, especially here in Australia, wanted me to ask. I reached out to my own community in the teachers club, and created polls and posts on my Instagram and social media. The responses that I got back reflected a feeling of frustration and confusion with Yoga Alliance in general, and specifically with their international support. However, in preparing for this interview, I became aware that YA is aware of their “reputation concerns” and desire for more support from the community - and are taking multiple steps to address both. In this interview, we get into questions, within the scope of international support, that hopefully help you make a more informed decision about your membership with YA (if you have one) - and how to reach out for more support if you need it.

We didn’t have time to cover some other really important, and relevant topics like how Yoga Alliance is / will handle accounts of sexual assault with the community (hopefully that conversation can happen soon too) - or questions around larger problems within the yoga industry like exploitation of teachers.

However, in this interview we do cover:

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • The original purpose of Yoga Alliance
  • The development of the YA RYS standards, and their new updated RYS standards
  • How the new, more rigorous application process may serve as one tool for ensuring that the standards are upheld
  • The role of social accountability - that companies like AirBnB or Uber use as one possible, yet currently problematic part of the solution to the questions of enforcing the new RYS standards
  • The role that online learning may take in YTT’s in the future
  • The Yoga Alliance Foundation International Emergency Relief fund - which at the time of this release will be live and accepting applications
  • Yoga Alliance’s position and current plans for partnering with international professional insurance companies as a member benefit
  • New provisions for international continuing education with multiple time zones & non-live CE credits

Making Yoga Philosophy Accessible with Jivana Heyman Ep. 2518 May 202001:23:38

I know I always say this, but I am so excited to bring you this week's episode. I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Jivana Heyman, author of Accessible Yoga; Poses & Practices For Every Body, Founder and Director of  The Accessible Yoga Organization - an international not-for-profit dedicated to bringing the teachings of yoga to communities that are under-represented in traditional yoga spaces.

Jivana also runs the Accessible Yoga Conference, and holds multiple accessible yoga teacher trainings around the world each year. A lot of Jivana’s work has focused around making asana accessible, but as he’s mentioned before, one of his deepest passions is actually making the essence of yoga, or yoga philosophy accessible. I was so excited to speak with Jivana about this.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Yoga as service & Jivana’s recent leadership in the yoga community during covid-19
  • How western celebrity culture has infiltrated the yoga world
  • The way the general public perceives yoga due to how it’s been marketed vs. what yoga actually is
  • How bringing critical thinking into our yoga studies and communities is essential

Teaching Meditation with Manoj Dias Ep. 2411 May 202001:07:40

In today’s episode, I speak with Manoj Dias, the founder of A-Space, Australia’s first drop in meditation studio. Manoj is also a global ambassador for lululemon, and was featured on the 20 Teachers Of Colour To Watch in 2020 list. I had the pleasure of meeting Manoj in person late last year when he came to Sydney to teach about anxiety and burn out, two things I’m incredibly familiar with.

I was really excited to speak with Manoj about his experience as a meditation teacher because he is so open about the balancing act between being a normal human being, and also someone that people look to for guidance, especially during challenging times.

Manoj drops some great wisdom about not throwing the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to navigating the difficult terrain of tradition, abuse and lineage.

We also discuss:

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Manoj’s biggest challenge as a meditation teachers
  • The difference between samatha & vipassana meditation

Running A Social Conscious Yoga Studio with Robin Lacambra of Good Body Feel Ep. 2304 May 202001:09:23

Last week my guest Eliana Chinea spoke about some of the issues that arise in the typical yoga studio model - and inside of The Teachers Club we questioned weather the studio model, as we know it, will go extinct.

It's true that studio after studio are closing their doors. Many of them were in real financial trouble before the pandemic, and the closures were the last straw. However, I believe that there will always be a demand for a place where people can gather in person, in community.  And as past podcast guest Nicole Cardoza says, the studios that survive will have to shift their value proposition.

So this week I'm pumped to bring you a conversation I had with Robin Lacambra before covid closed the world. Robin runs Good Body Feel, what I'm calling a socially conscious yoga studio. Robin runs GBF on a dramatically different business model than 99% of the other yoga studios out there. Right now, getting creative, and thinking outside the box are what will help us adapt and reinvent what the yoga industry can become.

Robin and I discuss:

  • Why the body is political - and what that means
  • Why diversity in leadership is so important
  • Running a socially conscious yoga studio
  • The 4 pillars Robin uses to measure success in her business
  • Running a ‘pay what you can’ sliding scale movement studio

Teaching Yoga Outside Of The Studio Model with Constanza Eliana Chinea Ep.2227 Apr 202001:16:48

In today’s show I speak with Constanza Eliana Chinea - a Latinx Yoga teacher living in LA. Eliana began teaching and consulting after noticing a need for diversity and representation in the industry. She now teaches Yogis and entrepreneurs how to decolonize their practice, create equity for teachers of color, and build inclusive spaces in the community.

The conversation that Eliana and I have centers on a topic that I think is super important right now - how yoga teachers can teach, outside of the typical studio model. As I mention in the interview, even before I was a yoga teacher, I was volunteering and working at studios. I’ve done everything from clean mats, mop floors, to managing a studio inside of a large chain, to teaching at a million different studios, and eventually to owning one. However, the majority of the time I was hovering right around the poverty line, getting burnt out, and feeling pressure to make my classes conform to the studio standards.

Eliana left the traditional studio model several years ago, and in this episode, she shares how she shifted her mindset, and began teaching in a more fulfilling and sustainable way.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • 6 issues with the current studio model
  • Finding freedom outside of the studio
  • How to manage the transition from teaching inside of the system, to teaching outside of it
  • The logistics of teaching outside of the studio model - in person & online
  • Why controlling the marketing of your classes & offerings can make teaching a lot more fulfilling
  • Integrating yoga & social justice
  • Remembering that yoga is about liberation
  • How to bring a vision to life
  • Decolonising pricing structures
  • And how to show up ethically online

She is honored to teach in the Sri Adi Shankaracharya lineage and is ordained into the mindfulness tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh.

In this conversation, Susanna offers a really deep and nuanced, yet practical approach to addressing how we may be participating in the second wave of colonising of the yoga practice - and what we can do instead.

Teaching Yoga As An Introvert with Ely Bakouche Ep. 1906 Apr 202001:07:06

Ely Bakouche is a fellow introvert, writer, editor and co-founder of Shut Up & Yoga. I reached out to Ely to talk alternative ways to be involved in yoga as a profession - without teaching a million classes per week - something that I think is especially relevant right now.

We speak about running a digital yoga magazine - creating a team, responding to criticism by doing better, introversion, working remotely, and how the finances of it all work.

Ely currently lives in Shanghai - and we recorded this interview in February before COVID-19 intensified in the rest of the world - however, during this interview Ely was in lockdown - something many of us are experiencing now - she’s written a great piece about self compassion and survigin covid-19 - I’ll link to that in the show notes.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • How To Be An Introvert & A Yoga Teacher At The Same Time
  • Contributing to the yoga world without actually teaching in person classes

Ageing Well with Myra Lewin Ep. 1718 Mar 202001:04:40

Myra and I spoke before the COVID-19 Pandemic became a serious social and public health emergency. However, it’s been several weeks since I last put out the podcast, and I know I’ve found respite in the podcasts I love in the last few days. Taking dog walking breaks and listening to shows that have nothing to do with the pandemic have been healing for me - so in case The Teaching Yoga Podcast can be that for you right now - here is an episode with an incredible woman and teacher, Myra Lewin.

Myra is the founder and director of Hale Pule - a Yoga & Ayurveda training centre and space for healing. I’ve been following Myra’s work for quite some time through her podcast Everyday Ayurveda and Yoga.

As I think you can tell in the interview Myra is someone that I really admire, because as far as I can tell, she runs an incredibly successful business, yet truly LIVES the principles of Ayurveda and yoga.

Myra has been practicing and teaching Yoga and Ayurveda for over 30 years, is the author of two books - Freedom In Your Relationship To Food and Simple Ayurvedic Recipes. Hale Pule is also a teaching space, and each year Myra and her team lead numerous professional training in Yoga & Ayurvedic studies.

I was most excited to speak with Myra about how yoga & ayurveda can help us age with grace.

*Please note - in the actual audio podcast I mention that Hale Pule also has an organic farm. While that was true when their center was located in Hawaii, their new home in New Zealand will have an abundant garden instead.

Closing The Wellness Gap with Nicole Cardoza Ep.1617 Feb 202001:05:11

Nicole is one of those people that I definitely felt was way too cool to talk to me, especially since we scheduled the interview, Nicole is now the face of Nike's Spring 2020 Yoga campaign. Not to mention her plentiful accolades, multiple not-for-profit businesses and the fact that she is an all around changemaker in wellness - I felt truly lucky to have the opportunity to speak with her. I first learned of Nicoles work, sadly, due to the mess that Yoga Journal made after her cover shoot last June.

Since that time, I’ve been watching Nicole spread her message of reclaiming wellness, closing the wellness gap and making wellness accessible to all.  She’s taken what could have been a career defining controversy, and parleid it into a launch pad for equity and justice. #impressed

ABOUT NICOLE

Nicole is a serial entrepreneur passionate about the reclamation of wellness. As the founder and Executive Director of Yoga Foster, a national nonprofit that empowers educators with yoga and mindfulness resources for the classroom, she’s re-invested over $2.5M in resources from the wellness community to increase the health equity of schools across the country.

After controversy with Yoga Journal over her cover feature for their August / September 2019 issue, Nicole’s work and mission went viral. From that experience, she launched Reclamation Ventures, a fund that invests in high-potential, underestimated entrepreneurs making wellness more accessible in their communities.

In today's show, Nicole and I discuss:

  • What the Wellness Gap is
  • Why inclusivity is deeper than who you put on your marketing materials
  • How to make your business truly inclusive, and bring wellness to all
  • Why true inclusivity starts with the people behind the business
  • A concrete way to start unpacking our own blind spots, and do the work to create inclusivity from the inside
  • Intention vs. Impact
  • A definition of Intention
  • A definition of Impact
  • The best analogy of intention vs. impact I’ve ever heard
  • Spiritual bypassing in the yoga community to avoid accountability
  • Community Care & Healing Justice
  • Building community into every part of your practice
  • How the wellness industry operates within capitalism
  • Unpacking what community really means
  • Starting a social impact organization

A Month In Review: Yoga News January 2020 Ep. 1403 Feb 202000:14:34

This week the podcast takes on a different form - solo episode of a monthly round up of what happened in Yoga during January. Aside from locking myself out of “my” ( I use quotes because I house sit full time ) apartment and missing an interview, a yoga news show has been bubbling around in my mind for a while. Members of The Teachers Club will receive a Yoga Weekly newsletter detailing the news of the week, so I thought I would venture out and try this new format on the podcast.

Of course, this report is biased. I’ve selected yoga news stories I felt were relevant, important or interesting. Other things happened in yoga during January 2020 - this is the highlight reel I’ve curated.

Let me know what you think…

So You Want To Start A Yoga Union with Markella Los Ep.1327 Jan 202001:25:36

In November 2019, Yoga Teachers at YogaWorks in New York city came together to create the world’s first ( that we know of ) Union For Yoga Teachers.

From The Yoga Works Union:

“We are Yoga and Mindful Fitness Educators. We’ve come together to have a voice in our industry, raise industry standards, and create a more equitable and sustainable profession for all. Our goal is for employees, students and businesses to thrive”

I was lucky enough to interview Markella Los, one of the union organizers for today’s podcast.

Markella is a yoga teacher, movement educator and one of the organisers of the worlds first union for yoga teachers teachers. I’ve been following Markella on instagram for a few years, because we share a similar philosophy about movement. We’ve had similar experiences with a long period of “yoga only” movement, and suffered pain and injuries as a result. After which learning from humans outside the yoga system, and upgrading our knowledge of how to keep the body healthy and resilient through movement.

But then… last year, I noticed that Markella was part of a group of teachers at YogaWorks studios in new york who were organising a union. Markella was one of the first people I reached out to, to be on the new show - and due to the fact that the union was literally forming when I asked her to come on - we had to postpone recording until a few weeks ago.

We talk about:

  • Why Markella & the Yoga Works teachers began to pursue creating a union
  • Pay barriers to becoming a yoga teacher
  • Pay transparency
  • Why the burden of getting a pay rise shouldn’t fall on the individual
  • An update on where the YogaWorks union is now (after the YES vote in November)
  • How a union works - collective bargaining, creating a contract
  • What types of things the union is able to ask for
  • How much time takes to organise a union
  • Thinking globally and acting locally
  • Bottom up organising in your community
  • Criticism & union busting tactics
  • Organizing for independent contractors ( vs. employees )
  • Misclassification of yoga teachers as independent contractors
  • The personal investment and growth of organising
  • The first thing to do if you’re thinking about starting a union
  • The main criticisms / challenges of yoga union organising
  • Union busting tactics
  • How the financial backing of a union works
  • How a yoga union can help foster diversity and access in yoga

Making Bold Ass Moves with Dana Falsetti Ep. 1113 Jan 202001:07:50

Today on the show I speak with Dana Falsetti.

Dana is a yoga teacher, fat liberation activist & serial entrepreneur. Dana’s newest yoga related venture, “practice with dana” is an online, pay what you can, accessible yoga platform. In 2013 Dana started an instagram account under the username @noaltrees and brought the conversation of yoga and body image to over 300K followers.

Throughout Dana’s career, they have made many bold ass moves to put their values before profit and fame. When it no longer felt healthy, or in alignment, Dana closed that instagram account with all those followers. When a company they were involved in wasn’t in alignment with their message, they spoke out. Dana has been faced with loss and lawsuits, and yet, has remained resilient, and true to what they believe in.

As you hear me say in the interview, Dana has been someone who has been a constant source of inspiration for me. From day one, I have watched them show up with a level of honesty, vulnerability and integrity that is surprisingly rare, even in the yoga world.

When I reached out to Dana, I honestly didn’t think I would ever hear back from them ( they’re kind of a big deal ) and I was super nervous to interview Dana - you can totally hear it in my voice in the first few questions.

Although I’m almost a decade older than Dana, I look up to Dana - as a shining example of how I want to show up in the world.

You’ll hear a little about Tristan’s story in the episode, but I highly recommend that you check out Tristans website and instagram. The New Hands On Adjustments In Yoga with Ashley Brodeur of Feelosophy Ep.0819 Dec 201901:21:48

Yoga and touch are heavily associated with each other - as yoga teachers, we are often given some training in how to use our hands, feet, and bodies to align, adjust and even comfort our students. As a student, chances are you’ve been touched by a yoga teacher in class. Many students have told me that the main reason they go to yoga is to be touched, and still countless others have told me they’ve been injured, or even abused by their yoga teachers using touch.

As awareness finally grows in the yoga community about consent to touch being a non-negotiable necessity ( hello & thank you #metoo + the netflix Bikram doco + writings about somatic dominance + Karen Rain going public to name just a few! ) some teachers have become ( understandably ) hesitant and confused about touching their students. I get it. And I think we should be concerned, I think we should educate ourselves around consent, I think we should reevaluate the need to adjust anyone with the intention of taking him / her / them deeper into a pose.

Touch can heal. And touch can harm. Can we as a yoga community relearn how we use touch to make it helpful rather than harmful?

Ashley Brodeur thinks so. Ashley offers us a way to touch that is informed & supportive. It’s not designed to fix, or correct anything. Instead of taking a student deeper into his / her / their pose, Feelosophy uses informed touch to take the student deeper into their connection with themselves.

On today’s show I talk with Richard Miller.

Richard is a world-renowned spiritual teacher, author, yogic scholar, researcher and clinical psychologist. He is best known for developing iRest Yoga Nidra Meditation, which combines traditional yogic practice with Western psychology and neuroscience. He is committed to bringing the healing benefits of iRest to all segments of our population including wounded warriors, people with cancer, MS, and the homeless among many other populations.

Each time that I interact with Richard, both in person, and even after this interview, I was left with a profound and overwhelming gratitude for how kind, compassionate and good he is. I actually cried tears of relief both times. Which, if you know me, is a pretty big deal.

Are Yoga Teachers Employees or Independent Contractors? with Cory Sterling25 Oct 202101:13:29

👉 Join Now:  Zero-50 Email Challenge

At one point or another, almost every yoga teacher I know has thought “Am I really a contractor, or… am I an employee?” The answer to that question has big implications - things like your working rights, superannuation (RRSP/401k), holiday pay…it  can even affect your ability to work for multiple studios, or run your own business. And if you're a studio owner, getting this question wrong can lead to some pretty big consequences. However, it’s a grey area, and one that the yoga industry has largely swept under the rug, at least as far as I can tell.

That’s why, in my mind, it’s a very important question to ask, and also one that needs a clear answer. And in today's interview, Cory Sterling (a practicing lawyer, and owner of the law firm Conscious Counsel) gives us a clear path forward to address this issue as an industry. So if you’re a teacher, or studio owner, this is one episode you don’t want to miss!

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Why getting legal advice upfront can save you time and lots of money
  • Why the government sets standards for employment
  • The deciding factors that determine if a yoga teacher is actually an employee, or an independent contractor
  • Why one studio faced over $300 000 in back taxes for misclassifying their teachers
  • How to know if your non-compete clause is enforceable
  • The best way studios and teachers can talk about teachers employment status
  • Why yoga studios and teachers should have contracts, just like any other profession
