In this episode, we’re stepping into a part of the design world that often flies under the radar, but impacts all of us daily, landscape architecture. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Debbie Laporte, Director at Orterra, a Brisbane-based design practice making serious waves in shaping the way we move through, experience, and connect with public space.
While we’ve hosted plenty of architects and interior designers before, this was our first real deep dive into landscape architecture, and it opened my eyes. Debbie shared how thoughtful design influences everything from city centres and local parks to tram stops, walkways, and the playgrounds our kids love.
We explored how great outdoor spaces encourage movement, social connection, and better living. It’s not just about plants or paving, it’s about designing for people, community, and flow. Once you start noticing it, you see it everywhere.
If you’ve ever walked through a public space and felt like it just works, chances are someone like Debbie had a hand in it.
🔑 Key takeaways from this episode:
✅ Landscape architecture is about more than parks, it shapes how we live outdoors ✅ People-first design means thinking about how we move, gather, and play ✅ Great projects come from tight teamwork with engineers and other pros ✅ It’s not just about equipment, play spaces need to spark imagination ✅ Inclusive design must consider mobility, age, and cultural differences ✅ The best spaces connect people to nature and improve mental well-being ✅ Lighting and layout play a big role in how safe a space feels ✅ Tech has changed the tools, but the heart of design stays the same ✅ Real success is when people use and love the space ✅ There’s a real shortage of landscape architects, and loads of opportunity
Tune in for an inspiring chat with a thoughtful designer who’s changing how we move through the world around us.

Ever feel like the construction industry’s in a bit of strife? Well, you’re not alone - and neither is John Davies, CEO of the Australian Constructors Association (ACA). I finally caught up with John to talk about the big stuff; industry reform, procurement chaos, cultural burnout, and what we can actually do to sort it out.
We had a cracking chat about how the ACA is working to shake things up, from championing value over lowest price, to backing modern methods of construction, and pushing for a proper cultural reset across the industry. We also cover mental health, workforce shortages, insolvency, and the role government should be playing as the industry’s biggest client.
Oh, and if you're keen to be part of the shift, keep an eye on the Foundations & Frontiers event coming up later in 2025, definitely worth a spot in your calendar!
Key takeaways from this episode:
✅ Construction’s got a problem with insolvency and worker burnout ✅ Mental health is critical, and can’t be ignored ✅ Procurement needs a rethink: it’s not all about price ✅ The government has massive influence, and should use it wisely ✅ Fairer, more transparent tendering is essential ✅ Bigger players need to lead, but everyone has a part to play ✅ Backing smaller contractors helps the entire ecosystem ✅ We need better cash flow, smarter systems, and financial stability ✅ Manufacturing and AI can help, if we fix the data problem ✅ We’ve got to make construction a more attractive career path ✅ Culture matters, and it’s time for a major upgrade
🤔 Why tune in?
If you’re on the tools, in the office, or leading a team, this one’s for you. It’s a real, honest chat about where the industry’s at, and what it’ll take to build something better. No fluff, just ideas, insights, and a call to lift the bar.
🎧 Hit play and get inspired to help build the future of construction.

This week, I enjoyed chatting with another Martin - Martin Fenn. Martin is the Lead for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) for the 'Chartered Institute of Building' across the entire Oceania Region. He is widely regarded within the MMC / DfMA space and focusses his work on enhancing Modern Methods of Construction and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) processes and the benefits of this form of construction.
He actually began his career 'on the tools', working as a carpenter. From there, he moved into the world of running his own construction business. Then, he packed his bags and made his way Down Under to Australia. He's worked with some big shots in the consulting and project management world in Sydney, and became a specialist in the field of MMC, overseeing and delivering multiple projects. More recently, he set up his own consulting firm and is now considered one of the top experts in Australia when it comes to modern construction methods.
In our chat, we tackled a bunch of topics. We dived into how sustainability plays a big role in modern construction, explored the various flavours of modern construction methods, and talked about where they can be applied. We also delved into the challenges of offsite construction and delivering projects this way. Essentially, we covered the ins and outs of where Modern Methods of Construction can work their magic.
