Explanations versus excuses02 Apr 202500:25:27

In this episode, I dive into the critical difference between explanations and excuses when it comes to our financial situations. I explore how identifying this difference can transform our money mindset, help us take meaningful action, and prevent future regrets. By learning to shift from excuse-making to explanation-seeking, we can break through psychological barriers and create genuine financial progress.

Episode Highlights:

  1. Explanations vs. Excuses: I break down how explanations clarify with facts and context, while excuses shift responsibility and provide psychological comfort that ultimately holds us back.
  2. The Self-Employment Example: I share my personal tendency to use "I'm self-employed, so it's harder" as an excuse, and how transforming this into an explanation creates actionable pathways forward.
  3. Four Questions to Identify Excuses: I provide a framework to determine if you're making excuses or giving explanations, including asking if it's specific, if there's a way forward, if you'll stand by it in five years, and if there's anything you're not telling yourself.
  4. The Future Self Perspective: I discuss how our future selves will thank us for turning excuses into explanations that we can act upon, rather than letting opportunities pass us by.
  5. Life's Regrets: I reference Bronnie Ware's "Top Five Regrets of the Dying" to highlight how excuse-making can lead to unfulfilled dreams and missed opportunities for meaningful connections.

What you will learn:

  • How to differentiate between legitimate explanations and limiting excuses in your financial life
  • Practical techniques to transform your excuses into explanations that enable action
  • Why psychological comfort from excuses can lead to long-term regret
  • How to balance accepting real financial challenges while still moving forward

Manifesting and being delulu, how much is too much? The Comments Section with Emma and Victoria13 May 202400:24:52

This week we’re cutting through the delulu about manifestation, money beliefs, and the practicalities of financial growth. Dissecting the difference between productive manifestation and delusional thinking, we’re emphasising the necessity of putting in the work to achieve your goals. It’s important to adopt a balanced approach, and recognise that while manifestation can set the stage for progress, it has to be accompanied by proactive steps towards your goals. We also look at societal influences on money beliefs, particularly for women across different generations and the generational shifts currently happening in attitudes towards financial autonomy.

This episode isn’t a gloomy take-down of manifestation, but an encouragement to think more critically about your attitude to ‘making this happen’. If this episode has got you curious about how you can add manifestation into you life, check out this episode Emma did with Kira Matthews: https://thebrokegeneration.com/blog/episodes/a-no-bs-guide-to-manifestation-with-kira-matthews-recast/?portfolioCats=362

Feeling stuck in your financial journey without a clue on how to move forward? Don't worry, you're in good hands! Today, I'm dishing out 7 essential principles to jumpstart your path to better finances this year. Whether it's reclaiming time for your passions or ditching the anxiety over looming bills, these steps may seem small but they pack a punch. Embracing progress, no matter how modest, paves the way for greater achievements down the line.

Have a listen and check out another episode which you may find helpful, Is it time to raise your money standards? You can also check out a heap of resources I’ve put together here.

Episode highlights:

  • Establish some form of financial structure for effective money management, whether it's through detailed budgeting or broader categorisation.
  • Allow yourself the flexibility to spend on certain indulgences within your budget, this can help maintain motivation and prevent feelings of restriction
  • Visualise your long-term goals and the person you want to become can make short-term sacrifices less daunting.

“[Have] some money set aside that you do not touch. Whether that is $100, whether it is $1,000, whether it is $10,000, a really good way to up your money standards and increase your commitment to what you're trying to do is getting used to having money in your possession that you do not touch."
Emma [19:54]

“Building in a break with your financial behaviour and financial goals before you feel like you need it can actually renew your motivation."
Emma [35:14]

“You need breaks from being perfect with money."

From transforming money habits to expanding the financial window, I’m giving you some actionable strategies to take control of your financial narrative. Like with any goal, sometimes there are sacrifices you have to make, and I’m taking you through the importance of strategic sacrifice in achieving financial goals, and how you can make intentional trade-offs that resonate with your personal brand.

How to stop pulling money out of your savings17 Apr 202400:45:23

Putting money into savings and then pulling it right back out again is a common financial glitch we experience. We are not all born financially savvy or natural savers. We are not naturally inclined towards delayed gratification and saving. However, pulling money out of our savings for whatever reason is one of those things that hold us back, but when we work on stopping this behaviour from happening in the long run, it can propel us much faster toward our goals. Pulling money out of our savings is not caused by the same circumstance or mechanism, and it is worth paying attention to what is happening at different points in your finances to cultivate your financial confidence and autonomy over your money.

In this episode, your host, Emma, shares more about savings and how to stop pulling money out of your savings. It's a common misconception that the main cause of our savings failures is pulling money out of our savings. In reality, the problem lies in our initial approach to saving, where we tend to put away excessive amounts. We end up over-saving and attempting to do more than we can. Listen in and get the tools to help you shift your perspective and approach to what fits your finances.

Tune in!

Episode Highlights:

  • [00:01] Episode intro and what’s in for you today
  • [05:42] Slowing down and recognizing situations in which you are pulling savings
  • [09:09] The difference between reactive and responsive financial behavior
  • [10:51] Emotional problems and how we pull savings to fuel emotional behaviors
  • [13:06] The PMG framework to help you work on emotional spending

  • [33:50] Motivation, goal simulation, and understanding how your brain responds to reward
  • [38:51] Prioritisation problem and spending on your highest values to get the most value
  • [42:31] Wrap up and end of the show

Standout Quotes:

  • “When we put money into savings and pull it back out again, we are kicking ourselves and our financial mindsets in a financial gap and hurting ourselves.”- Emma [07:43]
  • If you try to do the right thing too hard, if you try to budget too hard or attempt achieve more than it's realistically possible, you are setting yourself out for failure."- Emma [08:19]
  • When you are pulling money out of your savings emotionally, you are taking money from the future you to change your emotional state in the present; you are choosing now over later but the antidote is making tomorrow more attractive than today.” - Emma [23:20]
  • Looking ahead for banana skins is one of those big hard hitters that is going to drastically change the sense of control that you feel you have over your finances and give you much more autonomy on where your money goes because you have that confidence that you have looked ahead and you are aware of what is coming up. ”- Emma [29:09]
  • Understanding how to balance your scales out and prioritise your way to financial confidence is valuable.”- Emma [41:15]

The self care fallacy – buying "self care" but we're still not cared for: The Comments Section Emma & Victoria15 Apr 202400:37:09

Take a deep breath in… and out… ok now you’re ready for this week's comments section! We’re diving into the real deal of self-care beyond the pretty pictures on social media. We’re talking about how we really make self-care work in our daily lives - from nifty apps that keep us zen to those little life hacks. But hang on, we’re also getting real about how self-care’s become a bit of a shopping spree. Are we actually nurturing ourselves or just splashing cash to feel good? We’re peeling back the layers on what self-care means and spotting the difference between quick fixes and the real thing that gives us a deeper kind of chill.

And, because we love getting into the nitty-gritty, we’re asking the tough questions about why we resort to these self-care 'buys'. Is it genuinely soothing us or just patching up bigger issues? From psychological insights on why we shop when we're down, to simple truths like, maybe we need to treat ourselves like a toddler to figure out what we really need, this episode is your call to rethink self-care. Don’t forget, we want to hear from you too! Drop into our socials and share how you’re keeping it real with self-care.

When are we buying to fix ourselves, and when are we "investing in ourselves"? In this solo episode I dive into the sometimes-dangerous advice I see on social media about "investing in yourself" (which is basically just fixing yourself and/or emotional spending in disguise), and unpack the differences between healthy investments in yourself and toxic pseudo investments in yourself. Then, we move onto a model you can use to explore 7 ways you can invest in yourself in a meaningful way, and side step that toxic side of self-investment.

How to become a hot b*tch with money27 Mar 202400:26:43

In this episode, I'm sharing insights into my approach to managing my finances - what I like to call being a "hot b*tch" with money. I break down six key steps to master this mindset with confidence, and a touch of sass. On the fun side, it’s things like crafting a budget that fits your life, not the other way around. On the other hand, it’s tricker things like critically reviewing your spending habits that eventually help you to be more in control and aware of your financial standing. Working these tips into your finances can help you step away from autopilot and into financial empowerment and confidence.

Here's to embracing our inner "hot b*tch" and conquering our financial goals in 2024 and beyond!

Episode highlights:

  • Moving away from autopilot financial habits towards empowerment and self-assurance.
  • Emphasising the value of knowing your financial status at all times to make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary stress or guilt.
  • The importance of having financial goals and working towards them, whether big or small, as a key aspect of financial empowerment.

“A hot b*tch does what she says she's going to do... By setting and keeping promises to yourself and actually following through on them, that is where we become a hot b*tch with money."
Emma [03:49]

“Having a payday routine is the perfect way to do the things that you say you're going to do."
Emma [05:59]

“Treat every aspect of your finances as data... Seeing everything as data neutralises it. It doesn't make it about you and it helps you move forward."
Emma [23:43]

Soho house and designer bags: the comments section with E & V25 Mar 202400:37:50

This episode was recorded on the lands of the Boonwurrung People of the Kulin Nation. This land was never ceded, it always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.

The Comment Section is back for another juicy ep! This week we’re talking luxury money sh*t, and the link between consumerism and self-perception. With Soho House's expansion into Sydney, we dissected the allure and exclusivity surrounding the global members' club, and its lavish amenities and strict membership criteria.

We also compared our experience in purchasing a designer bag and explored the complex dynamics of prestige and personal expression tied to these luxury items. Beyond bags, we look at the broader questions surrounding luxury purchases, and their true value, both monetarily and emotionally.

Join us as we unravel the complexities of luxury living, membership culture, and the quest for belonging in an ever-evolving society.

What's it like to spend again after a year-long wardrobe freeze?20 Mar 202400:24:26

Buying clothes again after a full year of not buying ANY... what's that like?! Well gang, I'm taking you inside my brain. Being back in the big wide world outside of my challenge bubble (I didn't buy any clothes in 2023) has been humbling. While I learned so much last year and completely fell in love with my existing wardrobe, having the option of buying again has been more difficult to navigate than I expected.

In this episode, I take you through how I'm approaching solidifying my new approach to my wardrobe in the real world, the mistakes I've made now I'm buying again, and the challenges I've faced in trying to decide how to buy going forward.

I also dive into the decision fatigue that comes with deciding whether something is worth buying, and discuss how I plan to achieve the sense of peace I experienced during the year-long challenge, but without never buying.

I hope you enjoy this chatty episode, thanks so much for listening.

Introducing: the comments section. Money sh*t chat with Emma and Victoria18 Mar 202400:30:58

This episode was recorded on the lands of the Boonwurrung People of the Kulin Nation. This land was never ceded, it always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.

Welcome to The Comments Section: money sh*t chat with your hosts, Emma Edwards and Victoria Shakeshaft. In this 10 week special series from The Broke Generation, we'll be in your ears every Tuesday with chaotic conversations about money, life, and trying to exist as a grown-up, in a manner so unhinged it almost resembles the comments section of any piece of content you see these days.

This week we're moderately composed as we debrief the morning after my book launch party, and lift the veil on the reality behind events that look far glossier online than they actually are. You'll also get to know your cohost, Victoria aka @bad.bitch.money, and hopefully enjoy a giggle or two along with us.

Thank you so much for tuning in, bearing with us while we find our groove, and embracing the chaos.

Are you being a d*ck to your money? 5 ways to improve your relationship with money right now13 Mar 202400:28:55

What’s your relationship like with your money? Are you an awesome, supportive friend? A lazy roommate? Maybe you’re more of a strict and toxic boss? This episode I’m helping you to understand if you’re in a toxic relationship with your money, and what you can do to improve it. It’s essential to understand your financial behaviours and why you do what you do when it comes to making financial choices. I’m talking about proactive steps, like tackling financial admin tasks or making tough financial decisions, that you can do to strengthen your relationship with money. By fostering a healthier mindset and environment around money, you can empower yourself to make better financial decisions.

Episode highlights:

  • Unhealthy relationships with money may involve negative feelings, avoidance, overspending, and regret, leading to a lack of control.
  • Looking for a quick win to enhance the relationship with money? Set up and save for specific goals, both serious and fun.
  • Carve out dedicated financial empowerment time, whether for goal-setting, visualisation, or intentional spending, you can contribute to a healthier relationship with money.

“When we're talking about an unhealthy relationship with money that can look like lots of negative feelings around money, it can look like avoidance, it can look like overspending, it can look like underspending."
Emma [02:48]

“A healthy relationship with money looks like having a sense of peace around money. It doesn't mean that that's sitting there thinking everything's perfect, because I actually don't think that anybody ever gets to that point with money."
Emma [03:51]

“Where might your environment, whether that is the people you're around, the places you're around, your physical environment, your routines, your habits, your home, your norms, your standards… Where might those things be upholding your negative relationship with money?"
Emma [16:11]

Financial red flags in a relationship, with Respect Victoria06 Mar 202400:44:28

Content warning: This episode discusses topics of family violence and financial abuse.

In this episode, I talk with Serina McDuff, the acting CEO of Respect Victoria, shedding light on recognising early signs of financial abuse in relationships. Our conversation explores the need for open dialogue about finances, challenging societal norms, and fostering communication to create safe and consensual financial dynamics. These conversations can be with your own partner, family members and friends, and they are so essential. Serina emphasises that financial abuse can affect anyone, regardless of financial stability, and the importance of being proactive in understanding and addressing these issues. Throughout our discussion, Serina also provides valuable insights into creating consensual and safe financial arrangements within relationships.

Episode highlights:

  • Financial abuse is recognised as a form of family violence where one person in a relationship exercises control over another person through financial means. This can include monitoring spending, controlling funds, pressuring to take loans, and more.
  • We discuss common red flags in relationships that may indicate financial abuse, such as isolation, control over finances, pressure to quit a job, gambling with shared money, and exclusion from financial decisions.
  • The importance of having early conversations about finances in a relationship, and normalising discussions about money can help prevent financial abuse by allowing partners to openly communicate their expectations and goals.

“The broader societal expectations and sort of traditional gender roles that many of us have grown up with and many that continue to be entrenched today that can be the context for family violence."
Serina [09:57]

“It's totally okay to have a joint bank account, you know, but at the same time we would say, hang on to a bank account of your own."
Serina [24:45]

“You might have different views and you might sort of disagree, but you should be able to kind of navigate that the way that we do in healthy relationships where you agree to disagree or you don't feel unsafe in those conversations, you're just trying to work out what you should do as a couple."
Serina [28:09]

Good With Money Book Launch Special28 Feb 202400:30:02

My book, "Good With Money" is finally out! This book goes beyond finances; it's about self-discovery, understanding spending habits, and reshaping your relationship with money.

I’ll guide you through the book's five sections, exploring non-financial narratives and the intricacies of personal psychology in money management, complete with bonus page turning ASMR. I’m also sharing excerpts, with a sneak peek into the themes of financial empowerment and confidence explored in the book.

I hope it becomes your guide to mastering money habits and navigating your unique financial journey. If you do get a copy of the book, snap a picture of it and tag me on your Instagram stories - it’s out in the wild now!

Episode highlights:

  • A bit of real-talk - I have some mixed emotions now that the book is out! The journey from writing to seeing it in bookstores has been overwhelming but exciting.
  • Get a sneak peek into how the media has impacted women's financial empowerment and how social media influences financial decisions.

“I sort of look beyond the everyday habits of getting good with money. That is my sweet spot. That is what I, you know, focus on the most for getting good with money to getting you from Hot Mess Express to feeling financially confident."
Emma [18:56]

“I could not write a book in 2024 that does not address the importance of understanding how to grow your money, how to, you know, go beyond having savings, what to do when you've got all your emergency fund and everything sorted out, growing your money long into the future and looking at that more wealth creation, stability, preservation side of things."
Emma [21:11]

“We're programmed to join the masses to survive, like following the crowd who are running from a predator. If you lose the pack, you die. But now let's think about our financial behaviour. To what extent are we mirroring the norms of others around us, or outsourcing the appropriateness of our financial decisions to what others are doing?"

We're talking about things like planning for the long term, being smart about spending in a world full of temptations, and making sure your spending matches up with what really matters to you. I also get into understanding your own 'money story,' the importance of not always going for instant rewards, and saving money without a specific goal in mind. Is it time to raise your money standards?14 Feb 202400:22:09

Inspired by my friend Peta's podcast episode on setting standards in business (go listen if you're a business owner), today's quickie episode gets you thinking about the standards you're living by with your own personal finances. The habits we engage with create standards that we live by, and interrogating these standards can help us get out of our own way and start living to our full potential.

We explore the standards you might be accepting in your finances, and how you can look at raising your standards to get more out of your money and the way you experience the financial side of life.

Your challenge after this episode is to live your life as normal for one week, and look at the standards you're allowing into your personal finances. Are you making things harder for yourself by choosing immediate enjoyment over longer term goals? Are you kind of addicted to the chaos of starting over every month? Are you so used to having your value dictated by a salary you're not happy with that it's become part of what you accept as standard?

This one will get you thinking.

I didn't buy clothes for one year: here's everything I learned10 Jan 202401:07:22

It’s the long awaited wardrobe freeze update! In this episode, I’m sharing my reflections on completing a year without buying any clothes. I share the challenges and the wins, diving into what I discovered about myself and my existing wardrobe.

I also unpack the strategies that got me through the year, and the importance of mental preparation and finding balance in various life aspects. From weight fluctuations to rediscovering treasures in my closet, I’m sharing the valuable lessons learned during this period of intentional living.

Looking ahead, I’m laying out my game plan for the next year and figuring out how to put into action what I've picked up. This involves tweaking how I approach clothing consumption - thinking about making my own, trying out rentals, and, of course, doing a bit of shopping.

Join me as I continue this journey of mindful consumption, reflecting on the past and stepping into a future where my relationship with clothes is not just about style, but about conscious choices and sustainable practices.

Episode highlights:

  • I finished my wardrobe freeze!
  • Insights into the challenges and wins during the wardrobe freeze,
  • How to prepare, physically and mentally, for a freeze,
  • The financial aspects of the challenge - how much did I save by not buying clothes?
  • My future plans post-wardrobe freeze, including seeking the help of a stylist!

“I have a photo album on my phone of over 120 outfits I think that I put together throughout the year."
Emma [17:35]

“Spend time in your wardrobe, spend time with the stuff that you've got. Get to know the stuff that you caught by setting aside half an hour on a Saturday morning or an extra half an hour when you're getting ready."
Emma [17:48]

“A lot of things will happen during a year. They'll be events that you didn't even know you were going to go to yet. There will be feelings that you have about the way that you look."

24 goals for 202403 Jan 202400:49:29

It’s 2024, and I’ve set 24 goals for myself, my finances, and my business. From spontaneous trips to doubling my podcast listenership, these goals reflect a mix of building on past achievements and future growth. Balancing bold targets, such as running a live event, with practical steps like monthly business strategy reviews, I'm determined to make 2024 a transformative year. Join me on this journey and share your 2024 goals too! Plus, if you fancy leaving a podcast review on Apple Podcasts or a star rating on Spotify, you'd be helping me kick off one of my goals!

Episode highlights:

  • Reflecting on the achievements of last year's goals,
  • The impact of having a list of goals, emphasising accountability and self-reflection,
  • Building routines, with the intention to develop more structured habits in my daily life,
  • Striving for balance in personal and professional life, with specific goals related to financial and business aspects,
  • The value of interconnected goals, where working towards one, actually helps another goal too!

“So I feel like I've gone from a year of experimentation… and now I want to like, refine that and sort of lay down some patterns using that data."
Emma [10:57]

“I'm sort of getting into that mindset of working three months ahead of myself in terms of what I'm planning to do, so that I can think about plotting out those times I want to take off ahead of time rather than trying to take it off in the moment"
Emma [27:43]

“If I can give anybody any advice in terms of, like I guess, mental health and finding your passions and things like that and like finding yourself, it's find things to be proud of that aren't work."
Emma [46:32]

Year in review: part two20 Dec 202300:39:17

Welcome to part two of my Year in Review! In case you missed the first part, it dropped last Thursday, so be sure to give that a listen. Today, we're diving in from July, where I'm sharing the highs and lows of juggling running my own business, writing a book and everything else that life felt like throwing at me! From working to the bone on my book, to dealing with the challenges of maintaining mental health, we're covering it all.

Despite some very heavy challenges, the second half of the year definitely started to come up (thanks Milhouse Mindset!). While in rock-bottom’s basement, my book was eventually becoming more solidified, and my wardrobe challenge gave me an extra boost of positivity.

Reflecting on the year, I'm proud of overcoming challenges and finding a level of financial stability in my second year of full-time self-employment. So, let's jump right into the second instalment of my journey through the year.

Episode highlights:

  • Finding my rhythm with university studies and the rest of my schedule,
  • The importance of scheduling breaks and maintaining boundaries when it comes to rest,
  • The importance of the supportive business community,
  • How the Milhouse Mindset has been helping me in the later half of the year (Check out Episode 115: My game-changing mantra for the last 3 months of 2023).

“By the middle of the year, really started leaning into the really lovely business self-employed community that I kind of cultivated over the last few months."
Emma [07:59]

“Now I can chill a little bit before we hit the ground running in the New Year in terms of like goals and stuff for 2024."
Emma [33:13]

“You sow seeds, and they bloom. I'm hoping that in the new year they can bloom. And I've also, you know, I'm not going in blind, but a bit of a direction for what I want to do in Jan and beyond."
Emma [35:50]

FRIDAY FAVES: is a lack of self love sabotaging your finances?20 Mar 202500:33:02

Step into my time machine: for this week's Friday Fave we're going all the way back to 2023 to hear a fave ep about the link between a lack of self love and financial self sabotage, WOOF! Buckle up, it's a juicy one.

When we exist in a society that conditions us (especially women and marginalised groups) to constantly pursue "better" versions of ourselves, our finances often suffer as a result. I share how my own struggles with self-esteem in my teens and early twenties led to financial leakage, and how therapy and self-awareness have transformed my relationship with both myself and my money.

Highlights:

  1. Emotional Spending Cycles: How using shopping as a coping mechanism creates a vicious cycle of temporary highs followed by financial regret
  2. Self-Sabotage Patterns: Why we unconsciously derail our own financial progress when operating from a place of low self-worth
  3. The "Worthiness" Factor: How feeling undeserving can prevent you from saving, negotiating better pay, or charging what you're worth
  4. Identity-Based Purchasing: The danger of buying things to "become" someone else rather than to enhance who you already are
  5. The Awareness Solution: Practical first steps to notice the connection between your self-esteem and spending habits

What you'll learn:

  • The 7 specific ways low self-love sabotages your financial confidence
  • How to identify when you're spending to fill emotional gaps rather than actual needs
  • Why struggling financially might feel like your "comfort zone" (and how to break free)
  • The psychological difference between healthy vs. toxic identity-based purchasing
  • Simple reflection practices to begin healing your relationship with both yourself and your money

If you're stuck in a cycle of taking one step forward and two steps back with your finances, this episode will help you understand the underlying self-worth issues that might be holding you back.

Strap in for part one of a two-part year in review extravaganza! I walk you through each month, sharing the behind-the-scenes of my life, money, and business. From navigating the challenges of self-employment, to the complexities of health issues and the exciting inception of the year-long wardrobe pause challenge, this year has been non-stop!

In between everything else, I have also been writing a book (available for preorder now!), and in this episode I’m giving you a peak behind the curtain about how I went about juggling that with the rest of my life. I also get real about how my freelancing and sponsored content has been going, and where this podcast fits in amongst it.

Stay tuned for part two, where I'll be talking about the latter months of 2023, I promise it’s more positive than the start. Remember - Milhouse Mindset!

Episode highlights:

  • It’s my first full year of being self-employed! I’m chatting about what I’ve learned from it,
  • Challenges in mental and physical health, along with a busy schedule due to study,
  • Writing my book! Holy moly this is a big chunk of my year, but obviously it has a good ending!
  • Reflection on the podcast's growth, and the challenges and complexities of sustaining a podcast.

“This year in general just turned out very different to how I expected in terms of like I had some mental and physical health things that needed to be dealt with."
Emma [06:41]

“I kind of realised that I wanted to finish study and I wanted to finish the book before I did this, sort of like next, I guess, phase because of, I guess the uncertainties that I was feeling around that."
Emma [07:54]

“I knew that completing the book would not only give me this kind of beacon to stand behind of like what my work represents and also the confidence of standing behind that and the accomplishment and the achievement of finishing that project, as well as my study."
Emma [09:05]

Goal review: 23 goals in 2023 – which ones did I achieve?!06 Dec 202300:43:10

‘Tis the season for reflection! This episode I’m kicking off with a review of my 23 goals for 2023, both my achievements and setbacks, and exploring the reasons behind why some goals weren’t met - and whether I’ll be giving them another crack next year. I’m sharing insights into my own personal growth over the year, the challenges I faced, and the emotions tied to achieving my goals. I also share personal highlights, such as overcoming the mental hurdle of getting a new car and the importance of taking breaks. Whether they’re fun activity based like rock climbing, or important super contributions, goals should be made for yourself!

Episode highlights:

  • Reflecting on the benefit of adding a level of accountability to goal setting,
  • The importance of flexibility in adjusting goals, especially when faced with unexpected challenges,
  • Overcoming mental hurdles in financial decision-making.

“Even if you do not share your life and your goals with the internet and listeners and things like that, I really encourage you to just set a list of 24 things that you want to do, even if those things aren't even necessarily hard, just things you want to do."
Emma [02:42]

“I have really found that it's pushed me to saying ‘come on, we've got three months left of the year. Which of these can you do?’ Or even just take a step closer to some of them."
Emma [03:00]

“I'm pretty happy with having this list because I'm like, you know what I'm going to put I'm going to find $1,000, or if it's 500, I'm going to put it in there so that I have done something for future me."

One big shift that'll help you follow through on your money habits29 Nov 202300:26:28

In today's episode, I’m sharing a personal technique I've been using to boost my productivity and achieve goals - making promises to myself. When you make a promise to a friend, you work hard to keep that promise, right? So it’s time to treat yourself with the same level of respect and commitment! I’m covering four big reasons why this approach is effective and how it can be applied to various aspects of life, not just your finances. I also have a little challenge for you, to help build momentum fostering self-respect and building a positive self-identity. Tune in to discover how this method can enhance self-trust, improve financial habits, and create a routine for achieving larger goals.

Episode highlights:

  • Micro actions lead to macro results,
  • Integrate positive habits into daily routines with small daily promises,
  • Build momentum, learn what works and refine your routine for long-term success.

“I've had a lot of hard things to do, like life stuff, business stuff. I've had to pretty much bribe myself to be a functioning adult."
Emma [02:43]

“Making a promise to yourself not only sets the intention at the time but actually brings that concept of saying, I'm going to do this, I am respecting myself."
Emma [06:43]

“Every time you follow through, when you break something down, follow through with it, the power is back in your hands and allows you to go a bit further and a bit further and a bit further every single time."
Emma [14:10]

Black Friday 2023 will be different: here are the spending traps to avoid22 Nov 202300:29:56

Have you got your card details at the ready for Black Friday tomorrow? Maybe you’re hanging out till the Cyber Monday deals instead? I’m swooping in with this episode just before tomorrow’s frenzy with a bit of insight into the psychological aspects that can influence our spending behaviour during sale periods.

The current economic landscape, marked by reserved spending and consistent interest rate hikes, can make even the most disciplined saver more susceptible to the allure of a good sale. Now is the time for mindful decision-making!

I’m also discussing the challenge of dealing with regret avoidance spending, (Hello FOMO!) especially when faced with significant discounts. This is the time to be strategic, isolate your shopping behaviours, and prioritise mindful spending over impulsive decisions.

Tune in for some practical tips, including price comparisons, checking alternative platforms for better deals, and leveraging discounts and cashback opportunities.

Episode highlights:

  • Experts are predicting significant discounts during Black Friday, with 71% of retail experts expecting high discounting,
  • Five #SpendingTraps that could test you this sale season
  • The importance of comparing prices, checking alternative platforms like marketplaces and Depop for better deals, and leveraging discounts and cashback opportunities to maximise savings.

“Because of the cost of living crisis, people's discretionary spending is down. We're being a lot more reserved. So they're needing to entice us to spend a little bit more."
Emma [03:40]

“Be really, really careful with big discounts when you see them because it's going to throw everything else out of context."
Emma [10:17]

“Being good with money does not mean being perfect. It's all about how you respond."
Emma [25:31]

What is values-based spending and how do I do it?15 Nov 202300:34:20

By now, you've probably heard me talk about the significance of aligning your personal values not just with savings and investments but also with your day-to-day spending. In this episode, I'm highlighting the importance of recognising and understanding your natural spending tendencies and how they shape your financial behaviour. It's about mastering the art of blending your financial choices seamlessly with your unique personality and priorities!

Like most things, there are pitfalls and exceptions to navigate. I share my own experiences, shedding light on the nuances of values-based spending, and the ongoing challenge of distinguishing between conditioned wants and genuine needs. The beauty of this approach lies in its dual nature: indulging in things that truly matter while also saving or investing in alignment with those core values.

And because learning doesn't have to be all serious, I've got a couple fun exercises for you to try. These will guide you in uncovering and comprehending your financial values. Remember, getting to know yourself is the first step in getting on top of your money!

Episode highlights:

  • The importance of understanding and acknowledging your behaviour and motivations,
  • How savings and investments can also honour your values, contributing to your overall financial well-being,
  • Assessing how well current financial behaviours reflect values and potential for adjustments.

“It's a lot easier to shut out a lot of that noise when you have your financial values nutted out and you really get into the flow of aligning your money to these values."
Emma [10:34]

“I've noticed a lot that my priorities, my values are shifting and not like going against each other, but more just becoming more refined."
Emma [17:55]

“Finding a way to honour your values in some way in your financial routine makes your money, makes your relationship with money instantly stronger, and it makes it easier to engage in the behaviours that are conducive to positive financial outcomes."
Emma [31:07]

Listen to this if you ever feel "behind" in life08 Nov 202300:47:06

If you’ve clicked on this episode it’s probably because you’re fighting that nagging feeling that you’re ‘behind’ in life. It's a topic that resonates with all of us, consuming our thoughts more often than we'd like to admit. Featuring voice notes from listeners, sharing their own experiences with this all-too-familiar sensation, and how to navigate the complex feeling of being behind in life.

Feeling behind isn't just about the numbers; it's about the choices we make, the experiences we gather, and the unique circumstances that shape our journey. Together we explore the need to discern the specific triggers that make us feel behind and the underlying emotions driving these perceptions. It’s important to define your own unique path, discover your core values, and find contentment in their distinct journey.

Episode highlights:

    • Learning to differentiate between the societal pressure to conform to certain life milestones and your own personal desires and values,
  • Recognising privilege and how comparing yourself to others who may have had different opportunities can be counterproductive,
  • The importance of self-awareness and personal growth.

“Getting aware is the very first stage, and that might be noting little things down if and when they pop into your mind or getting better at sort of slowing down and noticing when these thoughts and feelings are coming to you."
Emma [11:15]

“Where can you kind of move away from that goal that's been sort of drilled into you is the right thing to do."
Emma [39:11]

“There is no decision, there is no end destination, there is no place you can be in your life where you don't have questions about where you're going next."
Emma [39:35]

“The older you get, stage of life matters so much more. I've got friends that are 25 and I've got friends that are in their forties, but the stage of life is kind of more important than the age."
Emma [42:26]

How to speak up and be confident at work or in business, with Annelise McCarthy01 Nov 202301:08:18

It’s the final guest episode of the year and I am so excited to be joined by Annelise McCarthy, owner and founder of ‘Her Speaking Coach’. This week, we're delving into the often intimidating world of confidence, communication, and self-belief as Annelise explores the five factors that frequently hinder women from speaking confidently: fear of judgement, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, comparison, and people-pleasing.

We discuss how these factors can be interconnected and how they can impact our ability to speak up and trust ourselves. Annelise stresses that building confidence isn't solely about mastering the technical aspects of speaking; it's also about cultivating a resilient mindset, and embracing your individual voice.

External validation is a natural human need, but the journey towards self-belief involves finding a balance between seeking validation and developing internal self-trust. Remember, building confidence is a continuous journey, and it's crucial to prioritise self-compassion, self-awareness, and a dedicated commitment to challenging these limiting beliefs.

Episode highlights:

  • How confidence in speaking is not just about having the right tools or techniques but also about working on your mindset, voice, and body language,
  • Addressing the challenges people face when trying to express themselves, advocate for their ideas, and overcome self-doubt in various aspects of their lives, not just in formal presentations,
  • The importance of confident listening - confident communication involves both speaking and listening effectively!

“The more that you avoid that fear, you validate the fact that it's scary."
Annelise [10:45]

“It's so hard to know where to start with breaking out of those things when they've been such ingrained patterns. I'll think that I've got over a hurdle I've been having, but then something will happen… and it kind of rears its ugly head again."
Emma [26:26]

“We talk about these powerful tools that we can use to overcome that external validation piece and to overcome perfectionism, whatever it might be. I think it's really human to want to be validated."

Buying happiness, with Kate Campbell18 Oct 202300:54:03

It’s the penultimate guest episode of the year! This week I’m joined by Kate Campbell, financial educator, and co-host of the Australian Finance Podcast - and now author! We discussed the value of investing and how it connects with our life goals. Kate emphasised the importance of reframing your identity as an investor and starting small to build confidence.

We also explored how personal values and experiences can shape financial decisions and the significance of questioning advice from others. Kate stressed that taking one step at a time, enhancing financial literacy, and asking better questions when working with financial professionals can lead to better financial well-being.

With Kate’s book now out, we also unpacked the significance of prioritising relationships and allocating time and resources to nurture them. The balance between living in the present and securing a better future, with a focus on relationships and well-being as key aspects of a fulfilling life.

Episode highlights:

  • The challenge of dealing with pushback from friends and family who may have different values or life goals.
  • Forgiving yourself for past financial decisions and understanding that those decisions were made based on the knowledge and experiences available at the time.
  • The concept of taking ‘healthy risks’ in investing and starting small, learning as you go, and seeking support from resources like podcasts, courses, and online communities.

“I honestly think that one of the most powerful things I did for my finances was forgive myself for everything that I did, quote unquote wrong or everything I didn't do because there's a unique type of shame that relates to things that we think we should have done or that we should have known better."
Emma[16:29]

“The answer lies within you, and I think this is why a lot of people, particularly with money stuff and particularly investing, you learn and you learn. And then there comes a point where you can’t learn any more. You’ve just got to make yourself do it."
Emma [26:33]

“There's not really a free lunch in investing. If someone's offering you something for free, really start to question it."
Kate [39:45]

“If we can focus a little bit more on the relationship piece and if we can allocate a bit more time and money to that side of things, then we're going to be happier longer term."

8 low effort ways to improve your finances right now11 Oct 202300:24:31

This week I’m grooving into another solo episode, looking into eight low-effort ways to enhance your finances without much hassle. We all know life's a bit rough these days. Whether it's dealing with the cost of living or just bracing for the unexpected, it's been one heck of a rollercoaster. But guess what? We're in this together, and I've got some tricks up my sleeve to make it a bit easier. So, grab your coffee, give this episode a listen, and get ready to upgrade your financial game. I'd love to hear if you try any of these tips, and remember, it's all about making money work for you, not the other way around.

Episode highlights:

  • Work on identifying and updating your financial values to align your money with what matters to you,
  • Focus on one high-impact financial improvement at a time,
  • Prioritise action and make small changes to improve your financial situation.

“Where a business would have like a marketing budget and an event budget… for the full year or per quarter, you can sort of do that yourself with your own finances by looking at those zoomed out numbers."
Emma [15:15]

“When you feel overwhelmed and you don't know what to do, what you should be doing, what's the most, what's the best thing to do? Just pick one thing and put your energy into that. Because doing one thing is always better than doing nothing."
Emma [19:45]

“What matters to you and how you can align money to improving your life, whatever that looks like for you, that sense of control is immediately flipped."
Emma [21:36]

“So I'm in full Milhouse Mindset mode at the moment. October, November, we are showing up for ourselves. I am just being like, You know what? We're going to go for that. We're going to try and make stuff happen."

How to like yourself more (and be better with money in the process) PART ONE19 Mar 202500:36:34

In this episode I explore the profound connection between self-acceptance and financial wellness. Discover why the journey to liking yourself isn't a simple switch to flip, but rather a transformative process that can revolutionise your relationship with both your self-image and your spending habits. I had SO MUCH TO SAY it's ended up being a two parter, so tune in next Thursday for 4 more ways to like yourself more.

What you'll learn:

  • Why self-acceptance is a gradual journey of neuroplasticity, not an overnight transformation
  • The surprising ways our self-perception drives our financial decisions
  • Practical strategies to break the cycle of "improvement" spending
  • How to begin separating your self-worth from the standards we've been conditioned to meet

Episode Highlights:

  • The Self-Love Switch Myth
Why we've been conditioned to believe self-acceptance is instantaneous rather than a gradual rewiring of our thinking patterns.
  • The Money-Image Connection
Explore the hidden relationship between how we see ourselves and where our money goes—particularly through "enhancement" purchases that promise to make us more acceptable.
  • Breaking the Consumption-Confidence Loop
Learn why stopping certain consumption patterns might actually be more effective than adding new ones when building self-acceptance.
  • The Mirror of Judgment
Discover how our perception of others directly influences our self-criticism and spending habits, and what we can do to break this pattern.
  • Neutrality Before Positivity
My journey of moving from self-hatred to self-neutrality before reaching self-acceptance, and why this middle step is crucial.
  • The True Cost of Self-Criticism
Uncover the financial impact of constantly trying to "fix" yourself through purchases, and what happens when you begin to step away from this pattern

Quotable Moments:

"When you're relying on that externality, that was just a complete sinkhole of spending because there is no end there. It's just a cycle that's going to keep going around."

"If you see it as a project of changing the way you see yourself, rather than just going from disliking yourself to liking yourself, it will feel a lot more manageable."

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week!

Improve your relationship with money, with Jess Brady04 Oct 202301:12:21

Got a long walk or drive planned? Queue up this ep, because it’s a long one! Joined by Jess Brady, I delve into the world of personal finance, shedding light on the psychological aspects that often overshadow the numbers. Jess, is an expert in financial psychology and founder of Green House, a financial literacy program.

We explore two distinct mindsets: financial stragglers and financial strivers. Financial stragglers tend to avoid accountability and justify their financial behaviour, while financial strivers embrace change, set meaningful goals aligned with their values, and learn from their mistakes.

Jess emphasises the importance of deep self-reflection regarding one's relationship with money and suggests asking hard-hitting questions to uncover beliefs and behaviours. She challenges the normalisation of being "bad with money" in society and advocates for a more open and supportive financial community.

Anyone can shift from being a struggler to a striver by embracing personal accountability, seeking support, and aligning their financial goals with their values for a future filled with financial freedom and flourishing.

Episode highlights:

  • The importance of thinking about money in the context of one's entire life rather than just day-to-day finances.
  • The cost of accessing traditional financial advice has been on the rise, making it less accessible to many people.
  • Understanding one's core values and aligning financial goals with those values, without this alignment, financial strategies are less likely to be effective.
  • Mindset, personal accountability, and the willingness to learn and make changes, when it comes to finances.

“I love Conscious cash flows. I don't like the word budget. It feels like dieting, very restrictive, very boring. It doesn't work for me and it certainly doesn't work for many of the people that I've worked with in the past."
Jess [12:15]

“Most people have never learned formally anything about money. You know, it's really been left to the people around us to role model. Some did it exceptionally well, some didn't do it very well. And we can learn from their mistakes, but they role model it in an environment that is exceptionally different to where we're at today."
Jess [17:13]

“People are very passive, and we let that sort of autopilot, as I call it, kind of run the show when we're not really making decisions in any part. We're not really balancing the now and the future."
Emma [20:32]

“I think in any area of our life, if it's important to you and if it's worth whatever's on the other side, to be passive is kind of selling yourself short."
Jess [21:45]

3 money beliefs that could be holding you back27 Sep 202300:33:38

Last week’s episode was all about breaking free from the spending hamster wheel and highlighted the importance of recognising the underlying emotional needs that drive our spending behaviours. Today, I'm delving deeper into this topic by exploring some common money beliefs that might be holding you back. These beliefs often linger in the background, quietly influencing our financial decisions, without us ever really noticing. Let's dive right in!

First up, the belief that "money will always be there." It's like a safety net, right? But sometimes, it can lead us down a path of reckless spending. We'll explore how to regain control over this belief and your finances.

Next, we've got the classic belief that "money is always hard." Who hasn't felt that way at some point? But I'll show you how to change your response to unexpected expenses and build a more positive outlook.

And finally, we've got the belief that "I deserve to spend my money." We all do, but when it turns into impulsive spending, it can be a problem. I'll help you find alternative ways to treat yourself without emptying your wallet.

Episode highlights:

  • Learn how to understand the link between your beliefs and behaviours when it comes to money and spending.
  • Overcome financial challenges and reduce shame associated with your money choices.
  • How to work on your money beliefs is an ongoing process, not a one-time fix. It's a tool to help navigate money throughout your lifetime.

“I want to help you start to understand the link between beliefs and behaviours. Because when we start to understand what is driving our behaviour, that's when we can really start to neutralise those beliefs eventually and make them more positive and then experience the outcome, the behavioural outcome as a result."
Emma [04:59]

“Most [financial] experiences have a practical element of what is literally happening and then an emotional meaning that's put on to that or an emotional way."
Emma [09:07]

"Sometimes what you deserve is to keep that money for another time when money can really be used as a resource to help you live your life, to help you experience life in a better way rather than in that immediate moment."
Emma [30:10]

"It's a really powerful pocket of personal finance because so often we focus solely on the behaviour and that can kind of keep us focused on trying to change something that is kind of like broken from within."
Emma [30:46]

How to get off the spending hamster wheel20 Sep 202300:38:41

Have you found yourself in a spending hamster wheel? Stuck in a cycle that seems impossible to break, with an urge to spend money, even when it doesn't align with your goals? This solo episode I’m breaking down the cycle, showing you how to identify what motivates your spending, and understand the emotional needs behind the spending. I’m sharing my own experiences of being stuck in this cycle and feeling like my financial outcomes were out of my control. I've learned to step off that hamster wheel and take control of my financial behaviour. This process involves identifying the motivator behind my spending, understanding the needs I’m trying to meet, and redirecting my behaviour in healthier ways. Rather than just focusing on cutting spending, it's essential to treat the underlying causes of your financial behaviour. By breaking the cycle and reprogramming your responses, you can achieve better financial outcomes and build self-trust. It's not about avoiding spending altogether but making conscious and empowered financial decisions.

Episode highlights:

  • Understanding the spending hamster wheel, and the steps you can take to break it
  • Uncover the underlying emotional needs driving your spending behaviour.
  • How to redirect your energy and behaviour toward more productive alternatives.
  • Building self-trust by consciously practising new spending behaviours and making mindful choices.

I want you to think about the need that you try and meet when you spend money. Is it an emotion that you are trying to soothe? Is it a feeling you're trying to obtain? Is it about control?
Emma [16:52]

If you could buy who you wish you were, if you could buy your way out of low self esteem, then we wouldn't be here working through this.
Emma [26:57]

You can have peace from your spending decisions. You can feel truly in control, not just a perceived sense of control.
Emma [32:23]

Learning how to spend money is not something that we're taught, and it's not something that's covered often in personal finances until you meet me.
Emma [35:17]
