| Life is getting worse for women in Afghanistan. You can help + Headlines | 03 Sep 2024 | 00:19:31 | |
The situation for women in Afghanistan right now is bleak. After retaking control of the country in August of 2021, the Taliban has wasted no time reinstating a raft of rules stripping away the rights of females. A week ago, a decree made it illegal for women to speak outside their homes. Alongside having to completely cover their bodies head-to-toe in thick fabric, they’re also banned from working and can’t look directly at men they aren’t related to by blood. Afghanistan is the only country in the world where girls are banned from attending school after completing the sixth grade. For activists and advocates, what’s happened since the Taliban came back into power is not surprising - but that doesn’t mean they’ve given up hope. On this episode of The Briefing, Sacha Barbour Gatt is joined by Shabnam Safa, a refugee advocate in Australia who here herself as an Afghani refugee, to hear what she thinks of the latest developments in the country. In this episode of The Briefing, Sacha Barbour Gatt is joined by TikTok lawyer Jahan Kalantar to find out exactly how online creators are sidestepping consumer laws and what more, if anything, can be done. Leonardo da Vinci + a Saudi Prince + one very old painting = a world of controversy. Salvator Mundi is the most expensive painting sold at auction. Dubbed the male Mona Lisa, Salvator Mundi is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci – but not all art experts agree that the work is by the famous artist. The painting sold for $450 million to Saudi Arabian Prince Mohamed bin Salman in 2017. After several years hidden away in storage, the Prince reportedly has plans to make the painting the centerpiece of what some of called the ‘Saudi Louvre’, and in turn creating a tourist attraction for the West. Is this art washing live in action? Professor Anne Dunlop is the Herald Chair in Fine Arts from the University of Melbourne. She joins Helen Smith on this episode of The Briefing to explain the backstory of the artwork, and what it might mean if it comes out of hiding and onto display. | Could the Biloela Tamil family finally be on their way home? | 24 May 2022 | 00:21:49
Asylum seekers Priya and Nades came to Australia separately by boat from Sri Lanka a decade ago. They met in detention and were given bridging visas before moving to Biloela, a small town in central Queensland. But when their bridging visas ran out in 2018, they were removed by border force and sent to Christmas Island detention centre - sparking huge protests. Angela Fredericks is a friend and advocate who has campaigned tirelessly to have the family returned to Biloela.
The ALP repeatedly promised it would clear the way for the family to return home if it won the federal election. So what’s the future look like for Priya, Nades, Kopika and Tharnicaa?

| Intermittent fasting: myth or genius hack | 16 May 2022 | 00:19:26 | |
Intermittent fasting is an eating plan that switches between fasting and eating on a regular schedule. It’s touted as a way to manage your weight and prevent — or even reverse — some forms of disease.
Professor Lauren Williams, a nutritionist and dietician from Griffith University joins us to explain the first big-time intermittent fasting diet was the 5-2 diet, where you eat restricted calories for two days…on the other five you eat what you like…but keep calories pretty low. These days there’s 16-8, where you don’t eat at ALL for 16 hours….and only eat between say, 10am and 6pm….outside that window, you’re fasting. Some people swear by it, others say it simply didn't work.
So, in this episode of The Briefing, is intermittent fasting a myth, or a genius hack.

At her lowest point in 2012, Rachel attempted suicide, she was diagnosed with severe post traumatic stress and depressive disorder, was put on 30 pills to manage her moods, anger and anxiety, was having two psychiatrist visits a week and she became physically unhealthy weighing in at 119 kilos.
Rachel was also diagnosed with uterine cancer and had to fight the disease alongside managing her mental health and learning how to re-use the left side of her body after having a stress induced stroke. In this very special Anzac Day episode of the Briefing, we explore Rachel’s motivation for beating PTSD and how sport – and the Invictus Games – led her out of her post-war depression.

| A Candid Conversation with Chrissie Swan | 22 Apr 2022 | 00:39:22 | |
Chrissie Swan has spent almost 20 years being stared at down the barrel of paparazzi cameras. In that time, the beloved radio and television host, reality star and household name has become thoroughly baffled by the interest in her self-described boring life.
In this interview, we’re introduced to a different side of Chrissie Swan. The side that the public doesn’t see, not because Chrissie hides her true self but because the media seems so intent on imposing a narrative on her life. | Cost of living: Australians on the bread line | 18 Apr 2022 | 00:21:09
We’re repeatedly told this election is all about the cost of living. Basically, the cost of living is the amount of money it takes to cover basic expenses - things like food, fuel, electricity, childcare and healthcare…things you can’t do without.
Jan Fran’s joined by Cassandra Goldie, CEO of ACOSS and Adjunct Professor with UNSW Sydney; and Mellita Rose, a single mother of two from Perth struggling to makes ends meet. In last month’s federal budget, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the government was focused on helping Australians make ends meet. It was all about the cost of living.
Well, why are low-income earners being left behind? And what can be done to help them?

| What the Financial Review's focus groups tell us about Albo | 13 Apr 2022 | 00:24:41 | |
The Australian Financial Review has today released research on focus groups it surveyed this week. The paper asked average voters what they made of Prime Minister Scott Morrison...and what they made of Opposition leader Anthony Albanese.
We’re joined by Stela Todorovic – 10 News First Canberra correspondent who asked Anthony Albanese THAT question; and Phillip Coorey, the Australian Financial Review’s Political Editor, based in Canberra.
Phillip tells us the results of the AFR’s research will have alarm bells ringing at Labor’s campaign headquarters. Clearly Albanese’s gaffe on day one of the election has resonated loudly with voters. Scott Morrison is not out of this election, not yet

Have you heard of Aussie Bro Squad? The four brothers from regional NSW have made a bit of a name for themselves on TikTok after filming and uploading themselves performing high-energy dance routines. While it appears innocent, internet sleuths have expressed concerns about the boys' welfare, two of whom are still in school. There are questions about why they’re made to perform on live streams at all hours of the day and night, and who is behind it all. Today, Sacha Barbour Gatt is joined by Archie Milligan from the LiSTNR Newsroom, as we look deeper into the story of the Aussie Bro Squad.
