Expressing13 Dec 202100:38:24

Frances, Karen and Megan delve into why people express milk, how it might work in different situations, and some of the logistical queries that new parents often have. Drawing on their years of experience supporting new parents, this friendly chat aims to demystify the question of expressing, and help parents to make decisions about feeding their baby.

Positioning and Attachment06 Dec 202100:39:08

This podcast is for anyone with an interest in feeding babies, whether they’re exclusively breastfeeding, chestfeeding, mixed feeding, expressing, still waiting for their baby to arrive, or thinking about stopping.

In this episode, we're looking at the importance of good attachment, and how positioning the baby well can help with that. We're ADAMANT that what the latch looks like isn't a good indicator of how effective it is, especially when the mother/parent finds it painful. If you're in this position, or in any way worried or unhappy about your breastfeeding experience, please do call our Feeding Line on 0300 3300 700 option 1.

This video is really helpful for explaining the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjt-Ashodw8

Milk Supply06 Dec 202100:43:51

This podcast is for anyone with an interest in feeding babies, whether they’re exclusively breastfeeding, chestfeeding, mixed feeding, expressing, still waiting for their baby to arrive, or thinking about stopping.

In this episode we look at how new mothers/parents can establish a good supply of milk for their babies, the role of hormones, and the importance of frequent, effective feeding.

We know that breastfeeding is not just a physiological process, and this comes up in our discussion of how mothers'/parents' confidence in breastfeeding is so often undermined in our culture.

If you're having difficulties or doubts, please do call the NCT Feeding Line to speak to us or our colleagues, on 0300 3300 700 option 1.

Getting Started02 Dec 202100:42:26

This episode is all about getting breastfeeding off to a good start. Frances, Karen and Megan chat about the things parents need to know, including the baby's first feed, collecting colostrum before the birth, and who to reach out to if things aren't going to plan.

Why Mixed Feeding Matters30 Aug 202300:32:44

Megan and Frances interview Karen about her new book, Why Mixed Feeding Matters, published by Pinter & Martin in September 2023.

The book is packed with useful information for different approaches to feeding your baby, including breastfeeding, expressing and using formula - and crucially covers how to manage using more than one method of feeding. With a guest chapter on mixed feeding twins and multiples by Janet Rimmer, and a chapter on mixed feeding premature or sick babies, it's a comprehensive guide for parents and health professionals.

Health outcomes of breastfeeding10 Jan 202500:37:07

As NCT Breastfeeding Counsellors we think a lot about how we talk about the health outcomes of breastfeeding. It’s not unusual in an antenatal session for someone to ask us a question about the pros and cons of breastmilk vs formula, or whether the health “benefits” of breastfeeding are overblown, and the answers to these questions are incredibly complex, as is the challenge of getting the right tone in our responses.

We’re exploring this issue in this episode, which might give you some idea of how many different things we have to consider when we talk about the health outcomes of breastfeeding.
