Dillian Whyte to Mike Tyson via Parker-Ryder… and yet another failed test23 Nov 202201:33:00

IF you can tear yourself away from the World Cup coverage taking place in Qatar, there’s feast of boxing action taking place throughout the weekend.

The main focus is the excellent showdown between Zach Parker and John Ryder, with an explanation on why that contest was not the main cover image for this week’s Boxing News. The return of Dillian Whyte, the bill at Ally Pally and the Prograis-Zepeda contest are also previewed. We also look back on Liam Davies’ excellent victory last weekend.

This Week focuses on the arrival of Mike Tyson.

Please keep your reviews coming, we’ll read them out next week (promise).

A MESSAGE TO FURY AND USYK16 Nov 202201:09:46

TYSON FURY and Oleksandr Usyk can change the face of boxing and safeguard its future… If they steer clear of daft demands and do what’s best for them.

There isn’t a single commission, sanctioning or governing body in place to ensure the best fights occur. Why?

Thankfully, plenty of good fights still do. We look back on some excellent performances from Natasha Jonas, Sunny Edwards and Denzel Bentley while looking ahead to a quality trade fight in Telford.

This Week remembers arguably the best performance of Manny Pacquiao.

Please rate, review and subscribe if you can.

A SPRINKLING OF MAGIC09 Nov 202201:17:38

DMITRY BIVOL turned in another magical display to beat Gilberto Ramirez over 12 rounds. But will he be able to crossover?

The fate of Aidos Yerbossynuly, after a gruelling encounter with David Morrell, is a more pertinent question mark. Our thoughts are with Yerbossynuly and his family.

We preview the upcoming contests featuring Natasha Jonas, Denzil Bentley, Dalton Smith and look back to perhaps the last truly great showing of Manny Pacquiao.

Please leave a review if you have time - and thanks for the support.

CONOR BENN AND THE BALANCE OF POWER02 Nov 202201:17:56

CONOR BENN last week confirmed that the failed test that ultimately cancelled his fight with Chris Eubank Jr was his second failed test. He is planning to prove his innocence. But can he?

Tyson Fury wouldn’t even entertain the subject during his recent interview with True Geordie though he did have plenty of choice words for the host.

Katie Taylor won again, Kiko Martinez scored his latest upset and Vasily Lomachenko snatched a points victory. All are under review and we look ahead to the bill in Abu Dhabu featuring Bivol-Ramirez and Cameron-McCaskill.

In This Week, Joe Calzaghe reflects on his battle with Mikkel Kessler.

HISTORY MAKERS: KATIE & ALI.26 Oct 202201:23:14

HISTORY MAKERS: KATIE & ALI.

As boxing pioneers, Katie Taylor and Muhammad Ali feature on this week’s pod with guest Barry Jones as we mark the anniversaries of Katie’s groundbreaking 2001 fight in Dublin and Ali’s famous victory of 1974 in The Rumble in the Jungle.

Commentating from ringside that night was Colonel Bob Sheridan who makes a special guest appearance in conversation with host Alex Steedman.

SHIELDS & MARSHALL REFRESH THE AIR19 Oct 202201:22:37

CLARESSA SHIELDS and Savannah Marshall combined to produce a classic that reminded everyone how special boxing can be. But the hangover from the last few weeks remains.

We pay close attention to the fight that boxing so desperately needed, the enthralling and contentious clash between Mikaela Mayer and Alicia Baumgardner, plus the news that Tyson Fury will embark on a third fight with Derek Chisora.

Fury’s old rival Deontay Wilder returned with an almighty bang and we go back one year to that duo completing their trilogy in This Week.

Please subscribe and leave a review, your support is cherished.

BONUS POD: SHIELDS-MARSHALL, WILDER-HELENIUS, HANEY-KAMBOSOS14 Oct 202201:24:12

IN a special bonus podcast, a busy boxing weekend is previewed. Featuring breakdowns and predictions of Shields-Marshall, Wilder-Helenius, Haney-Kambosos alongside interviews with Mikaela Mayer and Alicia Baumgardner.

What a weekend treat!

THE FALLOUT: BENN-EUBANK JR12 Oct 202201:38:39

ONE week after the failed drug test that rocked the sport of boxing, we look back on the fallout of Conor Benn-Chris Eubank Jr being cancelled.

But why did it take so long for the announcement of the cancellation to come, almost a fortnight after news of the failed test reached the relevant parties?

Please rate, review and subscribe if you haven’t already. Thanks for the support.

Eubank Jr-Benn set to stand tall in utter sh*tstorm05 Oct 202201:10:36

WHAT began as a day of genuine excitement for the impending showdown between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn took a dark turn when a positive test for a banned substance emerged.

But the fight, it appears, will go ahead with or without the backing of the British Boxing Board of Control. A shambles to say the least. We do our best to explain the events of a miserable day.

This Week is far more cheerful fare as we remember the British heavyweight showdown between Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno.

THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MR JOYCE28 Sep 202201:01:33

ALEX STEEDMAN is in Ibiza and surviving on two hours sleep a day. That didn't stop him hosting this week's podcast. But even that herculean display of strength and stamina is nothing on Joe Joyce, who turned in the best performance of his career to stop Joseph Parker last weekend.

Alongside Matt Christie, the showing of Joyce is examined and the conclusions drawn suggest that 'The Juggernaut' is going to take some stopping, even if he crosses paths with Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua.

The latest victories of Maxi Hughes, Amanda Serrano and Terri Harper are also reviewed while one of the most bizarre endings to a fight - the 2002 clash between Ricky Hatton and Stephen Smith - is remembered in This Week.

Drop us a review if you have the time, they're always mightily appreciated.

The doors to The George Groves Boxing Club are open.

JOYCE+PARKER… CANELO+GOLOVKIN… FISH+CHIPS21 Sep 202201:15:32

ANOTHER fight week is upon us as Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker ready themselves for a heavyweight showdown in Manchester.

It comes a week after promoter Frank Warren voiced his displeasure at Boxing News, labelling it ‘not worth wrapping your fish and chips in.’

Parker, steering clear of takeaways, tells us about his newfound dedication, his burgeoning relationships with Andy Lee and Tyson Fury, and why there can be no excuses should he lose.

We look back on the third and surely final fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin before looking ahead to the Nottingham bill featuring Maxi Hughes-Kid Galahad.

This Week focuses on the Cotto-Torres bar burner from 2005.

CANELO-GGG III PREVIEW - PLUS LATEST ON FURY-JOSHUA & EUBANK JR-BENN15 Sep 202201:09:03

CONSIDERING there was no UK action last weekend due to the passing of the Queen, there's an awful lot to talk about...

Not least the upcoming third showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin. Who wins and how?... We start with the ongoing developments with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua as the fight edges closer but still not quite close enough...  We clear up the latest news regarding Chris Eubank Jnr-Conor Benn, following Eubank Snr's claim that he is about to cancel the fight... We reflect on the all-female O2 card being pulled last Friday and the reasons why the British Boxing Board of Control felt they had no choice but to cancel all boxing events.

Finally, we journey back to 2004 when Miguel Cotto and Kelson Pinto came together in a bout that conclusively settled a rivalry stretching back to their amateur days.

FURY v JOSHUA : WILL IT HAPPEN?07 Sep 202201:00:49

TYSON FURY called out Anthony Joshua on social media on Monday. Only days later, fans are starting to believe that it might actually happen after Furt revealed a purse split that Joshua has subsequently agreed to.

So will it really happen? Are we about the see the Battle of Britain? Matt Christie and Alex Steedman attempt to answer.

One fight that did happen, twice, was Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello. We look back on the rematch for This Week Is History.

THE TRANSFER WINDOW IS OPEN31 Aug 202201:19:25

AFTER a summer break of sorts, British boxing is preparing itself for lift-off again. Yet behind the scenes, the promoters are back in their familiar position, jostling for position, battling for signatures and looking to make statements of intent.

Matchroom appear to have been seduced by the fat wallets in the Middle East. It means that fighters will be paid well and good fights are likely to be made. But there is far more to it than that, as this podcast attempts to explain.

We look ahead to the Liverpool bill, where Liam Smith, Natasha Jonas and Dan Azeez are in action. Juan Francisco Estrada returns in Mexico, too.

This Week In History focuses on a scintillating showing from Meldrick Taylor against James 'Buddy' McGirt.

Thank you for all the recent reviews! Keep them coming if you can spare the time. In the meantime, hit subscribe if you like what you hear.

OLEKSANDR THE GREAT24 Aug 202201:22:07

A FEW days have passed since Oleksandr Usyk repeated his September 2021 victory over Anthony Joshua, again on points. There is plenty to consider, not least the performance of Usyk, the brilliance of which was lost somewhat when Joshua made his by now infamous post-fight address.

We explore the mental fortitude exhibited by Usyk alongside his obvious boxing skill, and explain why Joshua was always gong to be up against it when faced with this version of the Ukrainian.

There is a more considered view of Joshua's own performance, both during the fight and afterwards, as we attempt to explain what makes a fighter and celebrity like Joshua almost impossible empathise with. And of course we focus on what comes next for both fighters as Tyson Fury (yet again) teases the possibility of a return.

There's a crackerjack of a contest in 'This Week' as we go back to 1981, and the night that Salvador Sanchez turned back the challenge of the formidable Wilfredo Gomez.

USYK BEATS JOSHUA AGAIN - BIG FIGHT REACTION21 Aug 202200:46:34

OLEKSANDR USYK again outpointed Anthony Joshua but it was a different fight to their first.

Show me the money!28 Jul 202201:12:20

A RISE in PPV prices is the latest subplot in Oleksandr Usyk-Anthony Joshua II. With the economy struggling and purse strings tightening, will fans still pay out? And does it really matter when events are being bankrolled by Saudi money regardless?

The enticing domestic showdown between Chris Billiam-Smith and Isaac Chamberlain is previewed in detail and there’s interest on the undercard as Olympians Ben Whittaker, Frazer Clarke and Caroline Dubois star.

In This Week In History, we go back to 2014 and a bombastic showing from a prime Gennadiy Golovkin.

EVERYTHING except the rehydration clause seems to be in place before Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn collide in a huge domestic showdown in October. Alex Steedman and Matt Christie explain why the final hurdle is such a big one.

Elsewhere, Ryan Garcia again hinted at his superstar potential while exhibiting the old flaws. But perhaps we expect too much. After all, how many fighters are perfect?

Favourite ring outfits and fight venues are also discussed. And, in This Week, one of the last top class performances of Arturo Gatti’s career is remembered.

DEREK CHISORA beat Kubrat Pulev over 12 punishing rounds to keep his career alive though concerns remain over his long-term future. Elsewhere, the rumours about a gargantuan domestic showdown between Chris Eubank Jnr and Conor Benn could become firm details very soon.

Alex Steedman and Matt Christie discuss both subjects alongside the ongoing issue of the after care system, or lack of, in boxing.

This Week goes back to 1986 and the last great 15-rounder, when a young Evander Holyfield outpointed Dwight Muhammad Qawi in a scintillating scrap.

The Big Joe Joyce conundrum07 Jul 202201:16:31

Looking ahead to Usyk-Joshua II and back on Holyfield-Tyson II30 Jun 202201:19:40

THE publicity campaign for the Oleksandr Usyk-Anthony Joshua rematch has started. What, if anything, can we take from the early vocal exchanges and will the result of fight two be any different to fight one?

Though the rematch is a welcome one, the setting of Saudi Arabia is certain to create controversy. Should we simply turn a blind eye to the setting?

Also on the agenda is the emergence of a potential superstar. ‘Bam’ Rodriguez was in sumptuous form as he hammered Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in eight rounds. What a showing!

Last but not least, we look back on the Evander Holyfield vs Mike Tyson sequel that ended with an infamous ear bite.

Please rate, review and subscribe. Your support is enormously appreciated!

BEAST MODE21 Jun 202201:10:56

Artur Beterbiev turned in a devastating performance last weekend to blow away Joe Smith Jnr. Alex Steedman and Matt Christie reflect on the demolition job and ponder what should come next.

Tyson Fury returns… after not really going away15 Jun 202201:07:36

TYSON FURY this week teased his return to the ring, barely two months after he promised he was going to retire.

Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua signed a huge deal with DAZN ahead of an expected return with Oleksandr Usyk. Also at heavyweight, Daniel Dubois walloped Trevor Bryan in Miami following a scarcely believable fight week.

So there’s plenty for Alex Steedman and Matt Christie to discuss before they get to Richard Riakporhe’s latest victory and, in This Week, remember Thomas Hearns’ stunning KO of Roberto Duran.

Thank you for all your reviews, they’re so appreciated! Keep them coming.

Inoue, Haney and Cordina dazzle08 Jun 202201:25:52

AFTER a truly sensational weekend in the boxing world, Alex Steedman and Matt Christie reflect on the performances of Naoya Inoue, Devin Haney and Joe Cordina.

There’s a close inspection of the rankings and some mouth-watering matchups that might be on the horizon. It’s a boom time for the sport but is the recent fascination with the tag of ‘undisputed’ a trigger for the upswing or a hindrance in the long term?

This Week is all about two friends who were once enemies: Larry Holmes and Gerry Cooney.

CANELO ALVAREZ and Gennadiy Golovkin look set to renew their hostilities on September 17. Alex Steedman and Matt Christie examine the appeal of their trilogy bout and make some early predictions.

Last weekend, Joshua Buatsi overcame a spirited Craig Richards in a terrific domestic dust-up while Danny Dignum fell badly when he made a gigantic leap in Las Vegas. We ponder if Buatsi is on track to rule the world while examining why Dignum’s flattering world ranking ultimately did him few favours.

The next instalment of the Gervonta Davis story is previewed and, in This Week, we go back to Bob Foster’s brain-shuddering KO of Dick Tiger.

The Tyson Fury Effect27 Apr 202201:17:28

DILLIAN WHYTE is struggling to come to terms with his one-sided loss to Tyson Fury, so much so that he’s screaming foul play and demanding a rematch. It seems unlikely he’ll get his wish, even if Fury does fight on. But if he doesn’t, what does the legacy of The Gypsy King look like?

From Wembley Stadium to Madison Square Garden, where Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano collide in a historic fight in New York. But who wins and how? The same question applies to another top notch scrap, this time in Las Vegas, where Shakur Stevenson and Oscar Valdez will duke it out for super-featherweight supremacy.

And if that wasn’t enough, we go back to 2009 in This Week In History for Carl Froch’s dramatic victory over Jermain Taylor.

If you have time, please leave a review. Thanks for choosing The Opening Bell!

FURY-WHYTE - Who wins?21 Apr 202201:31:52

EVEN by boxing’s standards, the build-up to Tyson Fury versus Dillian Whyte has been extraordinary. From the radio silence on Whyte’s side to the spectre of Daniel Kinahan and the collapse of MTK Global, it’s been far from ideal.  All of that, and the eagerly-anticipated fight itself, is discussed here in detail.

There are reflections on the performances of Conor Benn and Errol Spence, and the subject of This Week In History is the first battle between Floyd Mayweather and Jose Luis Castillo.

If you have the time, please rate, review and subscribe. Your support is always very much appreciated.

The sh*t is about to hit the fan13 Apr 202201:10:40

Last weekend, Gennady Golovkin overcame some sticky moments to hammer the resistance out of Ryota Murata in Japan. His performance is reviewed alongside suggestions that old rival Canelo Alvarez could be next.

Next weekend, Yordenis Ugas takes on Errol Spence in a quality matchup at welterweight and, in the same division, Conor Benn continues his education against veteran Chris Van Heerden. Both contests are previewed.

This Week In History focuses on Sugar Ray Robinson’s clash with Rocky Graziano from 1952.

Boxing and Daniel Kinahan31 Mar 202200:57:58

DANIEL KINAHAN continues to split opinion in the boxing world. For the boxers he represents, he is a breath of fresh air. Many promoters say he’s a dream to work with. And following Mauricio Sulaiman last week offering Kinahan his full support, the Irishman can add the president of the sport’s most powerful sanctioning body to his list of friends in high places. But what does this mean to the perception of boxing to the outside world?
