EP 48: When One Thrives, We All Rise: How to Be an Ally in Womenโ€™s Health Equity08 Jul 202500:44:13

Send us a text

In this deeply reflective episode, we explore the layered realities of systemic racism in maternal and reproductive care, and why it should matter to everyoneโ€”even if the story doesnโ€™t feel like itโ€™s yours.

Weโ€™re joined by Dr. Courtney E. Williams, a Provost Early Career Postdoctoral Fellowโ€” whose research and lived commitment to maternal health equity provide powerful insight into how racism shows up in reproductive outcomesโ€”and how we can begin to address it together.

Dr. Williams also shares simple, actionable steps that non-Black individuals can take to become better allies, advocates, and co-conspirators in the movement for reproductive justice and maternal health equity.

Episode Highlights:
1. Why Black Breastfeeding Week Matters- We break down the history, the why, and the reality behind this much-needed awareness campaignโ€”and how the Black breastfeeding experience often diverges from the mainstream narrative.
2. What Every White Ally Should Know in Birth Spaces- We offer gentle, grounded insights for white doulas, providers, and peers on how to support without centering themselves, listen without defensiveness, and lead with empathy.
3. How to Move from Awareness to Action- This episode doesnโ€™t just ask you to careโ€”it gives you real tools and resources to deepen your understanding, challenge systems, and support the journey toward reproductive justice for all.

A Note From the Heart:
This episode isn't about blame. Itโ€™s about listening, learning, and beginning (or continuing) the work of showing up betterโ€”for ourselves, for each other, and especially for those whose voices have too often gone unheard in healthcare. If you're here, you're already doing something that matters.

If youโ€™re a doula, provider, or simply a person who wants to understand more about racial disparities in maternal health, this episode is an invitationโ€”not to be perfect, but to be present.

Ep. 32: Real Talk on Raising Kids-Beyond the Perfect Parenting Guide:16 Jan 202400:22:00

Send us a text

Introduction:
In this heartfelt and candid episode, Naiomi takes a departure from the usual format to share some reflections and wisdom gained from her journey of motherhood. With her eldest son on the brink of graduating high school and heading off to college, Naiomi delves into the lessons she wishes she had known as a new mom.

Episode 32. The Basics Matter Most:
Naiomi emphasizes that amid the myriad of parenting advice, the fundamental needs of a baby are simple yet crucial. Love, security, and nurture take precedence over the latest gadgets or meticulously planned schedules. She urges new parents to focus on the essentials, reassuring them that if these are in place, they're already fulfilling 95% of what their baby needs.

Embrace the Marathon:
Reflecting on her early days of motherhood, Naiomi shares a valuable piece of advice: parenting is a marathon, not a sprint. She acknowledges the pressures she placed on herself, especially regarding breastfeeding, and recommends seeking external guidance if parenting decisions are causing undue stress.

Choose Joy Over Perfection:
Naiomi shares a poignant moment when she realized the importance of doing things for the joy they bring, rather than expecting gratitude from her children in the future. She urges parents to question whether their actions will bring them joy and fulfillment, as children may not always express gratitude immediately.

Conclusion:
Naiomi advises against making decisions out of fear, emphasizing that parenting decisions based on fear rarely lead to positive outcomes. She leaves listeners with a gentle reminder to cherish the moments with their little ones and to find comfort in the fact that love, safety, and nurture are the foundations that truly matter.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: If youโ€™re in pain during pregnancy... You donโ€™t have to just โ€˜grin and bear itโ€™.ย  From working with a breastfeeding specialist to Physical Therapy during pregnancy, there is support available to help you every step of the way!

Preparing your body for birth is such a personal process.ย  There is no one size fits all answer to the kind of strengthening or relaxation that should be done during pregnancy...ย  Itโ€™s so important to work with a healthcare professional to develop the right plan for your body (if this is accessible to you).

If you are a birth worker, pregnant or have someone in your life who is pregnant, this episode provides valuable information on how physical therapy can be used to help you decrease pain and take care of your body during this stage of life.ย  ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’›โœจ

Ep. 22: Feeding Your Tiny Fighter... Understanding The Unique Needs Of Feeding Preterm Babies.04 Apr 202300:50:53

Send us a text

โ€œThere are certain things that just take time to resolve, and those are issues of neurodevelopment...ย  They take time and you canโ€™t speed it up.ย  You canโ€™t make a baby grow and develop faster... As a parent once you can be clear on why this is happening, that thereโ€™s nothing wrong and youโ€™re not doing anything wrong then itโ€™s much easier to see โ€˜that this is whatโ€™s happening now, this is what we expect to change and when.โ€™โ€

-Christine Staricka

For todayโ€™s episode I got to sit down with the amazing Christine Staricka and (hopefully) answer all your questions about late preterm/preterm babies!ย  Christine is a Registered, International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant and trained childbirth educator. As the host of The Lactation Training Lab Podcast, her current role focuses on training and coaching current and aspiring lactation care providers. She has worked as a hospital-based IBCLC in the NICU for 10 years and has over 20 years experience providing clinical lactation care and support. ย

Breastfeeding a slightly early term baby is possible but there is A LOT you need to know before following the advice the internet or a well-meaning friend offers.ย  There is a lot of misunderstanding, misinformation and risks associated with treating a slightly preterm baby like a smaller version of a full-term baby!

In this episode we chat about sooo many things including:

๐ŸฃThe difference between preterm and late preterm babies

๐Ÿฃ Temporary tools to get your preterm baby to a โ€œnormalโ€ feeding schedule

๐Ÿฃ Information you canโ€™t always find online or on social media

๐Ÿฃ Signs of readiness to eat in preterm babies

๐ŸฃAssisting a preterm baby in getting enough food

๐ŸฃTongue-tie and other functional feeding issues

๐ŸฃCommon misunderstandings people have about feeding babies born before full term

๐ŸฃWhatโ€™s the deal with Fortification?

๐ŸฃWhen to bring in help and who to call

๐Ÿ’ซ And most importantly we ask Christine... If you had a magic wand, what is one thing you would want parents of late preterm infants to know? ๐Ÿ’ซ

If you are a parent of a preterm baby, education is the key to solving your feeding problems.ย  Itโ€™s important to remember that breastfeeding doesnโ€™t magically happen and there is so much support that needs to happen around feeding a preterm baby! ย

Boob problems: Clogged Ducts, Mastitis, Abscess, Galactocele

โ€œWhen youโ€™re going through something hard... Just because thereโ€™s not a way out doesnโ€™t mean thereโ€™s not a way through.โ€
-Tori Tso

If you've ever been through a super complex, stressful health issue... you know it can feel like you'll never be the same ๐Ÿ˜“ย  When this complex health issue is related to breastfeeding it's easy to become discouraged and give up.ย

In this episode I sat down with one of our patients, Tori Tso, to talk about her difficult journey through all the complications of mastitis and how close she was to ending her breastfeeding journey (and not by choice).ย

Tori explains how she went from an easy breastfeeding experience to pain, swelling, fevers, needle aspirations, and ultimately surgeryโ€ฆ.all the way on the other side of the country! ย

Though her story is painful, it's also filled with persistence, self-advocacy, and ultimately her ability to save her breastfeeding relationship. ๐Ÿฃโค๏ธ

If you are breastfeeding and develop any kind of breast infection, lump, abscess, or lesion, it can be very difficult to know which provider to see. OB, Midwife, Primary Care Provider, Breast Surgeon? As you will hear from Toriโ€™s journey, sometimes seeing the right kind of provider doesnโ€™t necessarily mean they will be equipped to provide care for a lactating breast without recommending breastfeeding cessation (weaning).ย

Listen in to hear Tori share how she maneuvered through these challenges and ultimately had surgery and saved her breastfeeding journey.

Ep. 11 All the Things You Want to Know about Baby Formula with Dr. Bridget Young PhD29 Mar 202200:53:13

Send us a text

When it comes to infant formula, a lot of questions are raised by concerned parents who are always aiming to give their babies the best nutrition available alongside breastmilk.
**This episode was recorded before the national formula recall**

In today's episode, we have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Bridget Young, Doctor of Perinatal Nutrition and creator ofย  the Confidently Find the Best Baby Formula for Your Unique Angel course.

Dr. Young is a pediatric nutritionist who conducts academic research in human milk composition. She has worked with countless families working through formula tolerance issues, helping them find the perfect feeding solution for their baby.

As a mom of two boys herself, Dr. Young understands how stressful infant feeding (and all the gassy messy issues that come along with it!) can be. She is passionate about reducing some of that stress so parents can just focus on bonding with their baby.

Through her website: BabyFormulaExpert.com, she uses her expertise to educate both parents and pediatricians about the nutrition science behind infant formula with the goal of helping all parents feel empowered and confident in the feeding decisions they make for their special baby.

EP 44: From Fuss to Flourish: Unlocking Your Babyโ€™s Full Potential with Chiropractic Care13 Feb 202500:59:28

Send us a text

Goopy Eyes, Stuffy Noses & Fussy Babiesโ€”Could This Be the Missing Piece?
Did you know thatย  chiropractic care goes far beyond back pain? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Stephanie, a chiropractor specializing in prenatal, postpartum, and infant care, to dive deep into how chiropractic adjustmentsโ€”especially cranial sacral workโ€”can help babies with common but often overlooked issues like goopy eyes, persistent nasal congestion, reflux, colic, and even feeding difficulties.

We also explore the connection between cranial alignment and a babyโ€™s ability to nurse efficiently, plus how body tension can impact digestion, sleep, and overall development. Whether youโ€™re a parent navigating these concerns or a healthcare professional curious about collaborative care, this episode is packed with valuable insights!

What We Cover in This Episode:
๐Ÿ”น What cranial sacral release is and how it benefits babies
๐Ÿ”น How chiropractic care helps with infant feeding challenges
๐Ÿ”น The link between cranial alignment and nasal/sinus drainage (bye goopy eyes!)
๐Ÿ”น Why some babies struggle with bottle feeding or nursing due to body tension
๐Ÿ”น How chiropractic adjustments support proper digestion and ease colic/reflux
๐Ÿ”น What to look for when choosing a chiropractor for your baby
๐Ÿ”น How early adjustments can set the foundation for long-term wellness

Dr. Stephanie also shares real-life cases where simple, gentle chiropractic adjustments made a huge difference in babies' feeding, comfort, and developmental milestones.

Why This Matters:
If your baby struggles with frequent congestion, feeding discomfort, or unexplained fussiness, their body might be compensating for tension that chiropractic care can help release. Understanding these connections can lead to better feeding experiences, improved sleep, and overall happier babies.

In this episode, we talk about pacifier use. Both born and raised in St. Louis, MO, Jane Molina and Joy Williams spent the first 4 years of their post-collegiate career working for their father's Contracting company.

They honed in on their real passion during this time, helping moms and babies. Jane birthed an idea that became the NinniCo pacifier in 2014, and developed the technology that became a product for e-retail in 2021.

Together, they invented and patented a pacifier that mimics the shape, feel and oral mechanics a baby experiences while breastfeeding. By identifying a hole in the baby products industry and working to fill it, our pacifier is taking the market by storm. In 9 months of sales, NinniCo. has sold over 25,000 pacifiers to women all over the world, and the business continues to scale every month.

Anticipating 7 figure revenues by the end of Year 1, also securing International distribution deals and penetrating retail outlets in 2022, Williams and Molina hope to help aid as many mothers and babies along their breastfeeding journeys as possible.
