Ep. 279: Postpartum Care Reimagined: The Village Postnatal Retreat Center with Jen Darwin, L&D RN, Doula19 Jul 202400:59:51

HeHe is joined by Jen Darwin to talk about reimagining postpartum in the US! As a former Labor & Delivery RN and now a doula, Jen is no stranger to the disparities that happen in postpartum support for moms-- the lack of 'the village,' the single six-week check up and no paid maternity care. Overall, the United States spends the most money in the world on healthcare per person. However, in regard to maternal outcomes, we typically rank last when compared to other wealthy nations. Today, Jen shares about her postnatal retreat center nestled in San Francisco and provides full-service, round the clock postpartum care for new parents! The retreat center is a comfortable, relaxing place where you, your partner and baby can get the support you need to get off to a healthy start. Meals are prepared for you, dishes are done for you, staff makes your bed, and washing bottles and pumping parts! Their King Studio and King Suites are customized for postpartum recovery and come equipped with heated bidet toilets, rainfall shower heads, and comfortable King Size beds. Whether it’s your first child or your fifth, a “village” of support can offer the resources you need.

This type of message wasn't going to cut it, and women deserve better.

Our DREAM was to use our professional expertise to help women thrive from their pregnancy journey through postpartum. We created a roadmap for each period - one that accounts for all the changes and modifications that need to come with each phase of motherhood. We know that mamas are short on time, so our guides are made with that in mind to help you exercise efficiently to feel your best!

We are mamas who are passionate about giving ALL women the knowledge and tools to empower them to feel confident in keeping their baby safe during pregnancy and to heal properly during recovery from a c-section or vaginal birth.

Ep. 183: Abstinence Only Sleep Education is Failing Parents22 Feb 202200:32:35

Amanda Janzen is a registered nurse and international board-certified lactation consultant. With 8 years of L&D, postpartum, and special care nursery experience she has worked in a hospital setting, free-standing birth center, and now in private practice as a birth/postpartum doula and lactation consultant. As a mom of two, she knows the realities of postpartum and honors every parents "intuitive knowing" when something "feels off." She strives to bring all options to the table so parents can feel confident in their choices even if they go against the grain.

Amanda landed a job as a new graduate in labor and delivery and began to recognize patterns that led to the rarest/scariest birth complications. She questioned the "norm" early in her career and now realizes these experiences have shaped her into the practitioner she is today.

These same questions carried over into her postpartum nurse role when educating parents about the "ABCs" of sleep at hospital discharge. She was secretly bed-sharing (safely) with her own baby at home, yet telling parents this was not an option for them with a hospital "gag order" in place.

She refuses to teach abstinence only education when parents want more information on bed-sharing and believes lives can be saved when we intentionally teach parents how to make this a safer practice.

Follow along with Amanda: www.midwestmommacollective.com

Generously, Amanda has offered $25 off a virtual safe sleep consult. These consults look at each families unique medical histories, feeding practice, sleep situations, and home/bedroom setups to help determine if bed-sharing is right for you. Mention you heard the podcast on The Birth Lounge!

Ep. 176: A Glimpse into Pulse Check (HeHe's New Project with Mandy Irby!)18 Aug 202100:29:47

Inside the halls of American hospitals, millions of people find comfort, healing, and support. But for many doctors and nurses, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

This podcast will dive into the shadows of American healthcare to investigate and uncover the abuse, control, and political power plays that leave the very people responsible for our nation's health, broken and battered.

We’re sharing stories of professionals in medicine that have experienced horrendous treatment at the hands of a broken system that does nothing to stop the trauma. As the Association of American Medical Colleges states, “Long before the #MeToo movement, women in medicine have instinctively banded together to counter a culture that too often tolerated harassment.”

From systemic trauma to abuse of power to the unspoken rules of cover-ups and corruption, Mandy Irby and HeHe will take you to the darkest corners of healthcare in America so you can have an inside look at bringing humanity back to medicine!

Sensitive Content Warning: This podcast will share details of triggering subjects such as sexual assault and workplace violence, so if you aren’t in a space to listen, respect your mental health and tune in again at another time.

Karena Skibinski, is an occupational therapist based in mental health, mother, and host of the “what about the mama?” podcast. Karena’s work is designed to inspire mamas to shift the focus from all about the baby to themselves (even if it’s just during the episodes), and to use self-care as a modality to rediscover their intuition. When it comes to motherhood, there's an overabundance of information, and Karena's mission is to empower mamas to not only educate themselves but to also trust their intuition as the guiding light on their motherhood journey. Through practicing self-care, mamas tap into their intuition, bringing more confidence, ease and enjoyment into their parenting. Karena strongly believes that self-care isn’t just facemasks and massages, especially as mamas; it’s also about setting boundaries and communicating your needs – although a massage is SO nice every once in a while! She enjoys trying new recipes, going on long walks, swimming, and lazy afternoons on the couch.

You should be emptying your bladder frequently during labor—and that’s exactly what this episode is about! HeHe is diving into the why and when behind peeing often in labor. A 2017 study stated that postpartum hemorrhage occurs in 3% of births, but the CDC Foundation suggests that up to 70% of those may be avoidable. Ep. 150: Because YOU are Superwoman with Jaclyn Coy24 Nov 202000:45:35

When Jaclyn Coy had her first daughter, she was opened up to the world of unmedicated labor. As she dove in, she navigated switching providers and exploring her options to have an unmedicated labor without the ‘hippie dippie’ aspect she had always envisioned being innately connected to unmedicated labor. Through her birth experiences and motherhood journey, Jaclyn created the Minimal Intervention Birth Method which inspired her to write the book, Because YOU are Superwoman. In her book, share shares the stories of 15 people plus her own to help you hear empowering stories of real life births by birthing people just like you—some births went according to plan and some didn’t, but all were positive experiences!

Ep 149: Friday Free Talk: Navigating the Holidays After Trauma & Loss20 Nov 202000:25:50
The holiday season can be hard for those who have experienced a loss this year. At a time of year that people are expected to automatically be happy and be cheery and bright-eyed, it can be painful to have to pretend to be enjoying yourself while you are dying inside. One mother described it as “a dark place of heartbreak and anger.” Through my work with Mothers’ who have experienced loss (or any kind of trauma), I have found that having a structure of mindsets to help you survive in high-stress situations is helpful.   Blog: Bigger than You Approach   Blog: Navigating the Holidays after Trauma and Loss

Ep. 147: Friday Free Talk: The ARRIVE Study16 Nov 202000:31:40

I get asked A LOT about The ARRIVE Study. It’s a hot topic. For some people they are thrilled to hear there is science backing up an induction and some folks are terrified because they feel pressure from their provider and don’t feel aligned with a 39-week induction. Before we dive into the issues with this study. Let’s take a look at the history that you should know. It’s ultimately up to you! You know your baby and your body! You are the most qualified person to make this call! These are my thoughts on The ARRIVE Study that is sometimes used as a means to suggest that 'all pregnant people' should be induced at 39 weeks. That is a not true and here's why!

Ep. 146: What to know about Inductions with Becca Helie, CNM10 Nov 202001:00:49

Inductions are one of the most common interventions when it comes to birthing a baby. Some people welcome inductions, and some want to avoid it at all cost! Today,  I am joined by Certified Nurse Midwife, Becca Helie, to discuss inductions, the methods in which you can be induced, and how to evaluate the risks and benefits of each option. Becca and I are going to dive into 'failed inductions,' too. Did you know that you may go in for an induction and not leave with a baby? Meaning that your body was not receptive to being induced, so it 'failed.' This is *NOT* a reason for an automatic c-section!!! If you are headed into an induction, this is an episode that you will not want to miss!

Ep 144: A Vote for Better Postpartum Care with Skyler Jacobs, CNM02 Nov 202000:50:25

In today's episode, HeHe is joined by Certified Nurse Midwife, Skyler Jacobs, to discuss how the current US postpartum care schedule sorely fails birthing people in getting them appropriate support after having a baby! Skyler is a big proponent of every birthing person getting a 2-week follow-up in addition to the expected 6-week check-up! We chat about how beneficial both visits would be and for different reasons. At the 2-week appointment, Skyler shares that providers would be assessing totally different things than at the 6-week appointment. She even shares how you can have a conversation with your provider to inquire if this may be an option for you!

Ep. 143: Friday Free Talk: The 'Magic Words' in Birth02 Nov 202000:17:32

I recently attended a birth where the provider was forcibly suggesting that my client allow for an IV hep-lock to be placed. The issue arose when my client asked if there was any medical reason to have the IV placed at that time and the provider began to spew fear-based rhetoric and painted the picture (actually, just confirmed) that the placement of an IV was 'just in case' something bad happened there would already be easy IV access. In this episode, I dive into the legality of this interaction, how we navigated it, the outcome of the IV situation + the outcome of the birth! We teach you how to have these tough conversations with your providers AND share all the research you need to make your birth plan as ideal as possible!
