Today's guest, Taylor Mckay, is our team doula over here at Labor Nurse Mama, and we adore her. Of course, we talk about her birth experience and why her birth led to her dream of becoming a doula. According to AmericanPregnancy.org, a doula is "The doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. They aim to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience." Inside our birth classes, we felt it very important to provide our students with multiple support layers, including a doula. So last year, we brought Taylor or board; it was the BEST decision ever!! | All about Pain Relief Options During Birth: Which Work Best? | 12 | 09 Jun 2022 | 00:27:45
One of the biggest questions you might ask yourself before you have your baby, is this: "How will I handle the pain of labor?". You have choices. That is the first thing I want you to focus on. After that I want you to be educated on what causes the pain and how you can lean into it, prior to utilizing your pain management plan. Labor pain is not a pain that you should fear, it is a pain that is necessary to bring you the baby. Join the Calm Mama Membership: labornursemama.com/cms Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! During birth, there are pretty much 3 common options for pain control: Analgesics, Anesthetics, Nitrous Oxide, and Unmedicated options. Today we talked about the first three options which all fall into the medicated pain management options. Analgesics include IV narcotics such as Nubain, Stadol, Morphine, Fentanyl (which works the best in my opinion), and sometimes Demerol. Analgesics do not take the pain away, rather they lessen the pain, and still allow you to move somewhat freely. They cross the placenta and affect the baby, for this reason, they can not be given later in active labor. Nitrous Oxide is another option for pain relief. It does not eliminate the pain. is administered through a face mask during the contractions. Once you remove the mask, the effects are almost gone immediately. Many women love this option as it allows movement throughout labor. I have found that some women love it and some women hate it. An epidural is the most favored option for pain management during labor. It is considered an anesthetic and if it works properly will eliminate the pain. I teach my students to not solely rely on it being the savior of the day, as there are many times an epidural might not work out. Always have a backup plan. I hope this episode helped you understand pain relief options during labor. I would be so grateful if you hit subscribe and write a review!! Resources: Take my free birth workshop now! And things like: I don't like when they make that comment, I don't like when they invite themselves over or you're going to start noticing ways people push past your boundaries. And I think now is the time, to communicate how you feel about what's going on. We get a lot of questions about in-laws or just showing up at the house and I don't really feel comfortable about that. So how do I handle that? So, the main thing I always say. Try communication first, be upfront with them about what is going to work for you. Because I think when we don't communicate and we just assume they know that's when problems start to happen, or we start to fester and we start to hold on to anger, like, oh, are they still doing it? But if we never told them, They might not know. If boundaries are not respected, once you set that line, you need to limit your time with certain people." Then I just have a moment of going, oh no, and quickly stand up so that my water doesn't break on his bed. However, I stood up and my water broke all over my toddler's bedroom floor, my mom's brain was like, don't let your water break on your toddler. Then he was very nice and asked if I peed myself. I said, Yes! And he said, mommy, we're not supposed to do that in the middle of the floor." Resources: Ready to be empowered & Prepared for Birth, Take a Birth Class NOW! Today we are breaking down getting induced. We talk about medical and elective induction. You have a choice mama. You do not have to be induced if there is not medical indication. Being past due is not legit unless there is something else going on that makes out safer than in. I am all about you making choices for your plan of care. Do not make emotional choices. Trish cannot emphasize enough the value of being educated to minimize fear and anxiety, while sharing practical advice for preventing 3rd to 4th degree tearing, and advocating for your own birthing preferences. “You have to understand the stages of labor, because the movements that you do pre labor, during early labor, during active labor, during transition, and during pushing are so different in some ways. And it all really depends on the passenger, the baby. So, you have to be educated, you have to take an evidence based birth class so that you can recognize what stage of labor you're in, and you have to take a class that teaches you how to move your body. | Understanding the Benefits of Delayed Bathing for Newborns | 107 | 05 Apr 2024 | 00:17:48
Tune into this episode to explore the significant benefits of delayed bathing for newborns. In this recent Instagram live Trish shares insights on the importance of delayed bathing, how it can benefit both the baby and the mother, and how new mothers can make informed decisions during the postpartum period. Join the Calm Mama Membership: labornursemama.com/cms Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! Trish emphasizes the importance of skin-to-skin, and how vernix, a natural protective barrier, plays crucial roles in infection prevention, temperature regulation, and supporting breastfeeding. She shares insights from her career and changes she has witnessed and advocated for in the practice of newborn care. Trish gives tips and guidance on how to communicate with healthcare providers about delayed bathing and other interventions after birth to prioritize the wellbeing of the mother-baby. From Trish: So why am I recommending Delaying Newborn Bathing? Delaying Newborns' first bath is one of the critical components of protection that you can advocate for your child at birth. Delayed Newborn Bathing Benefits1 . Reduces the Risks of Infection/Exposure Let's face it; most of our babies are born in a hospital. Think sick people. So to leave the vernix on our little ones and let it protect them from bacteria and fungi. Studies show that vernix has over 41 proteins in it. 29% of those have antimicrobial components, and 39% lend to immunity. 2 . Improves Body Temperature Control A baby cannot regulate its body temperature (thermoregulation). The newborn baby loses its body heat four times faster than adults. Staying warm is critical to a newborn's well-being. Hence, we also promote immediate skin-to-skin (here are some skin tips and benefits) and eventually swaddling with a hat (after the golden hour, please and thank you!). Did you know that immediate skin-to-skin reduces thermoregulation issues by 42%? WHAT??????? 3. Stabilizes Newborn Blood Sugar Control Low blood sugar in a newborn is a downright scary situation. It can quickly turn fatal. Guess what increases the risk of a baby's blood sugar dropping? Stress (Like crying) which releases cortisol (stress hormone), causes blood sugar to drop. Guess what makes them cry more? A bath. Hello, guess what makes a baby less stressed? Being on top of their mom and being warm and not crying. A study states that babies bathed before 12 hours of birth doubled their chance of improper blood sugar control. 4. Improved Breastfeeding Success Girl, if all the reasons I have listed so far are not enough, then perk up. Delaying Baby's first bath protects them from a whole bunch of evils and increases the chance of successful breastfeeding. It's known that when skin-to-skin happens during the immediate postpartum period, the baby smells the amniotic fluid on the breasts. The same is said for the vernix. It smells like amniotic fluid and familiarizes the baby with the breasts, and boom a good latch. It is thus promoting breastfeeding success. The evidence for...
