| Kylie Lang: Grow Your List with a Quiz | 15 Feb 2022 | 00:28:16 | |
Where you send listeners to connect with you at the end of your podcast interviews is really important. You want to have a strong call to action when you embark on this strategy. And as we’ve discussed in previous episodes one option for your call to action could be to send listeners somewhere they can sign up to your email list. But for them to want to do this it’s a good idea to offer an incentive, a lead magnet. In episode 6 Teresa Heath-Wareing discussed How to Create a Lead Magnet that Converts. I’m really pleased to welcome Kylie Lang to the podcast to talk about why a Quiz could be the ideal lead magnet to grow your email list. Kylie Lang is a Quiz Funnel Strategist and Course Creator as well as being founder of the 'Fab Factor'. She works with course creators, service providers and coaches to grow their email list, get more leads and have sell out launches using the power of an automated quiz funnel. After running her digital course company for nearly 14 years, when there was no social media to speak of and most courses were paper based, she's made plenty of mistakes and been part of the massive growth of digital marketing at the grassroots level. | The Glasswater Quintet with James Morgan-Jones | 16 Nov 2021 | 00:27:29
In today's episode we welcome James Morgan-Jones, the author of The Glasswater Quintet, a series of psychological thrillers, with a supernatural touch. James began his career as a professional actor but after a serious accident retrained as a feline behaviourist. James Morgan-Jones was born and brought up on the Essex/London borders. His mother was Welsh and his father from the East End. He trained as a professional actor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and worked for several years in the theatre. After a serious accident he retrained as a feline behaviourist and now lives in West Wales. He began writing seriously after gaining an MA with Distinction from Trinity Saint David University in Carmarthen. He then embarked on The Glasswater Quintet, a series of psychological thrillers, with a supernatural touch. The novels are linked by character and place but set in different decades, from the 1940s onwards. The first book in the series, On the Edge of Wild Water, was published by Wordcatcher in the summer of 2017. This was followed by the second in the quintet, The Glass Citadel, later that year, as well as a short story collection, The Wheel and Other Stories. The third novel, The Stone Forest, was published in November 2018, followed by the fourth – Eye of the Rushes – in 2020. James is also an accomplished speaker and a respected poet. He was featured in a radio interview for World Poetry Day 2020. In the autumn of 2019 his first collection of poetry, Living Places, Passing Lives, was published by Wordcatcher. We’ve already talked about how to pitch to podcasts but before you even get to that stage you need to carry out an audit of your online presence. This is so important because the first thing a podcast host will do when they receive your pitch is check the links to your website, socials or just straight up Google you, before they decide whether or not to book you. Hosts are often busy running businesses and won’t take long to decide if you’re a good fit or not. You need to make sure they like what they see. So number one, Review your online presence Go on do it now. Pull up your website. How does it look? Is it modern and clean looking or is it dated and clunky? What does it say about you and your brand? Your website is your shop window. If it could be better stop here. This is what you want to focus on before approaching podcast hosts. And if you don’t have a website now would be a good time to create one. No, it’s not essential if there’s somewhere else you have a strong presence like a social media channel for example where you can direct people but I’d urge you consider setting up your own website because it’s something you have control over, unlike social media which you don’t own. Websites don’t have to cost a fortune. There are some reasonably priced designers or you can do it yourself. The WordPress theme divi is user friendly with great support and there are other options such as Squarespace or Wix just to name a few. Next look at your presence on social media Do your social media channels reflect your brand? Do they need to be cleaned up? Do any posts need to be...

We have pitched our clients to hundreds of shows and have gathered plenty of feedback from podcast hosts allowing us to refine our approach, so we know what tends to work and what doesn’t. If you listened to our last episode you’ll have your equipment in place and will have a list of podcasts that you’re ready to reach out to. But before you write your pitch get your media kit set up. In your media kit you’ll want to include at least one high resolution headshot, one short and one long biography, if you’re an author include your latest book cover and information about your book, and finally your podcast information sheet, which is an interactive PDF sometimes referred to as a one sheet. It shows hosts who you are and what value you will bring to the show. We created branded PDFs for our clients and will drop a link in the show notes to a CANVA template that you can use to create your own. In your PDF you’ll want to include your headshot, biography of approximately 200 words, approximately 3-5 topics you could talk about and 3-5 questions. Also include all your contact details: your email address, website, social media handles and Skype address. It’s a good idea to create a Google doc of information that you’ll be frequently ask when applying to be a guest on podcasts. If you do this at the beginning you’ll have it to copy and paste. Add your address, links to your social media platforms and website and note how many followers you have on social media and your email list as some hosts will ask this. It’s important the 3-5 questions you include demonstrate the value you’ll bring as a guest. Avoid questions about you because this information will come out during the interview. Pull out questions that will make you stand out from others in your field. For example, one of our author clients includes:
How do you successfully marry serious topics with humor in your writing? Another client includes: How did you consistently grow your company by at least 50% per year for five years?
Once you have your media kit set up you’re ready to write your podcast pitch. Now you may be thinking you can dash off a letter which tells the host about your accomplishments and ask to be on their show, just changing who you’re addressing it to, Dear Tracey, Dear Frank and wing it off on email and wait for the Yes’s to come in. You’re not the only one to have thought this is all it takes but remember hosts receive a great many pitches a week so you need to do everything in your power to stand out.
Your pitch needs to... | |||

Before you begin pitching podcasts you need to make sure you have the right equipment in place so you’re ready to go when those Yes’s start rolling in. This is one of the first things we cover with our clients so that they look and sound professional. Yes I did say look as more and more hosts are using video as well as audio. It’s worth getting this part right. Imagine putting all that effort into booking, preparing for and recording a podcast interview only to have the sound quality so poor that the host can’t use the show. Not only is it a waste of your time but also theirs. Remember, Podcast interviews not only offer you the opportunity to connect and share your message with your target audience but they also offer the chance to build a relationship with the host. And hosts invest their time and money into their podcasts. They’re dedicated to growing their audience and showing up regularly with great content, so you want to respect their time and the opportunity they’re giving you. If your interview goes well, the host may invite you back on the show, recommend you to other podcast hosts or become a client so you want to maximise your interview. One easy way you can do that is to invest in good equipment. This way you’ll be ahead before you even begin. The good news is that decent equipment doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are lots of great options out there but I’m going to focus on the equipment we use or that’s been recommended to us by podcast hosts. Do not be tempted to use your computer’s in-built microphone. It’s just not good enough. Get yourself an external microphone. I use the Blue Yeti. It’s a condenser microphone so I set it up on the cardioid recording mode which is perfect for podcasting as you can speak in front of the microphone and it won’t pick up the sounds at the back. Dynamic microphones eliminates background noise and just picks up your voice. Audio Technica and Rode offer some popular choices among podcasters. So that’s microphones. Now headphones. Some of our clients wince a little when we tell them that they must wear them especially when the podcast is video not just audio. But it’s so important for sound quality. Without headphones the listeners may hear an echo or feedback.⠀It doesn’t matter what kind of headphones you use. Choose the kind you find most comfortable. ⠀If you’re worried about your hair wear earphones, just make sure they’re not turned up too loud so the sound doesn’t go back into the microphone. As we’ve mentioned some podcasts include a video element. Make sure you clarify this before your interview. There’s nothing...
| The Benefits of a Podcast Interview Strategy | 01 Nov 2021 | 00:07:17 | |
In this episode we talk about the lesser known benefits of a podcast interview strategy. Our clients are often surprised by how many benefits there are to being a guest on podcasts. Reach is usually the first thing they think of. How many people are going to hear my message? but there are far more benefits than the initial reach. Our clients are often surprised by how many benefits there are to being a guest on podcasts. Reach is usually the first thing they think of. How many people are going to hear my message? but there are far more benefits than the initial reach. Timeless Podcasts can be downloaded all over the world, at any time and for the listener it’s fresh content no matter when you recorded the episode. Your podcast interviews are assets. They’re evergreen and something you can benefit from months or even years down the line. One of our clients told us that a listener discovered one of her podcast interviews a few months after she’d recorded it. As a result she contacted our client and bought her course which at the time she was selling for 3 thousand pounds. Captive audiences Podcasts are a really intimate medium. Think about it. When someone pops in their earphones to listen to you on an episode you have their attention for 30 minutes to an hour and what this does is really help them to get a sense of who you are. It builds those know, like and trust factors which are important when something is thinking about buying from you or even taking their relationship with you to the next step such as joining your Facebook group. One of the benefits of this is that it can really shorten the sales process for you. Listeners often come to our clients presold as the listener I mentioned who bought the 3,000 pound course from our client.
Email subscribers and social media Something you may not have considered is the exposure you’ll also get to a host’s email list and social media following.
Hosts often have big email lists or substantial followings on social media, often larger than their podcast audience, but all of which they promote their podcast episodes to, which introduces you to larger audiences.
Improving your SEO What does that mean? Back links are created when one site links to another. You may also have heard them referred to as inbound links. When your podcast interview goes live you will usually get at least one back link to your website from the show notes. Take a minute and imagine if you were interviewed on 50 podcasts. That’s at least 50 links all leading to your website. Backlinks are really helpful for driving traffic to your website but they also valuable for SEO because they signal to the search engines that they vouch for your website. This can help your site to rank higher and increase its visibility in search. This is why it’s important to be consistent with this strategy. Podcast interviews are an investment which build over time.
