| EP 143 - Trish Imbrigno (Bluegrass / Americana Artist) | 26 Nov 2025 | 01:07:15 | |
EP 143 – From Classical Burnout to Bluegrass Love Songs with Trish Imbrogno In this episode, Ryan talks with double bassist Trish Imbrogno about leaving the classical orchestral track and rebuilding her musical life inside bluegrass and Americana. Trish started bass in middle school, progressed quickly through classical method books, and went on to study bass performance at Duquesne University with Jeff Turner of the Pittsburgh Symphony. After years in regional orchestras—long drives, tight stages, and playing the same repertoire—she hit a wall. Around the same time, opportunities in Americana and bluegrass started coming her way, and the music felt fresher, more communal, and surprisingly more sustainable. Ryan and Trish dig into why bluegrass is far more nuanced than the “1–5 is easy” stereotype, how she retrained her ear and time feel to function off the page, and what happens when you step into a genre shaped heavily by regional culture and tradition. Trish also breaks down the experience of recording her new project, Bluegrass Love Songs, Volume One, alongside an all-women band of legendary players in a male-dominated genre. They talk about nerves in the studio, choosing the right bass for the session, tracking “Think of What You’ve Done,” and her follow-up instrumental single, “Cherokee Shuffle”—a musical love letter to the Pittsburgh bluegrass community. The episode also explores her musical influences, the process of developing harmonic ears in a chord-driven genre, and the storytelling depth at the heart of bluegrass “love songs.” Featured Tracks: 🎵 “Think of What You’ve Done” – Single Connect with Trish Imbrogno: Website: https://www.trishplaysbass.com/ Connect with The Bass Shed: Website: https://www.thebassshed.com Featured in This Episode: Wood Shed Bass KraftGeek Capsule Music Stand Jerry Jemmott 15 Timeless Bassline Instagram / Twitter / Youtube / Website / BSA / View More Episodes

In Episode 2 of The Bass Shed Podcast, host Ryan Roberts sits down with bassist and musical director Gregg Cash for a candid conversation about life as a working musician in the Los Angeles music scene. After a technical mishap caused by a cat knocking over recording wires during their first attempt, Ryan and Gregg jump right back into the conversation and pick up where they left off. What follows is an easygoing discussion filled with stories from the bandstand, insights into the LA music community, and the unpredictable moments that come with a life in music. Gregg talks about the unique nature of the Los Angeles music scene and why, despite the abundance of work in town, he still prefers the spontaneity and excitement of touring. He shares how the close-knit network of musicians in LA shapes opportunities and collaborations while also discussing the restless feeling that comes from staying in one place too long. The conversation moves through a series of memorable gig stories, including a dinner party performance in Malibu attended by Martin Short and a blues jam session featuring Dan Aykroyd and legendary producer David Foster. Gregg also shares stories from working with guitarist Jared James Nichols, including performing at the Seymour Duncan booth during NAMM and diving into Band of Gypsys–era Hendrix material in a high-energy blues/metal setting. Ryan and Gregg also dive into bass gear — a topic that inevitably comes up among bass players. | EP 1 - Nadav Peled (Guitarist/Bandleader, The Ambessa Orchestra) | 14 Feb 2019 | 01:26:10
In the first episode of The Bass Shed Podcast, Ryan Roberts sits down with guitarist, composer, and bandleader Nadav Peled of The Ambessa Orchestra for a wide-ranging conversation about musical identity, global influences, and building a creative voice through tradition and exploration. Nadav shares the story of growing up in Israel and discovering music at an early age. Influenced by players like Brian May and Jimi Hendrix, he began playing guitar at age eleven and quickly immersed himself in band culture while living on a socialist kibbutz. Those early experiences shaped both his musical curiosity and his understanding of how music can bring people together. The conversation traces Nadav’s path to New York City, where he studied jazz at The New School and began developing a deeper connection to global musical traditions. That journey eventually led to the formation of The Ambessa Orchestra, a group dedicated to exploring the sounds of Ethiopian music—particularly the rich Ethio-jazz scene of the 1960s and 70s—blended with elements of funk, jazz, and modern improvisation. Nadav explains how studying traditional Ethiopian instruments like the krar helped influence his approach to the guitar and composition. Rather than simply imitating the style, he sought to understand the musical language and adapt its phrasing, rhythms, and melodic concepts into the band’s arrangements. Ryan and Nadav also discuss the Ambessa Orchestra’s collaboration with United Airlines, where the group was selected to reimagine George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, blending the iconic piece with the band’s Ethiopian groove-based approach. Throughout the conversation, Nadav reflects on the balance between honoring musical traditions and creating something new, as well as his work as an educator at institutions such as the Silver Lake Conservatory. It’s a conversation about curiosity, cultural exchange, and the creative possibilities that emerge when musicians explore beyond the boundaries of a single tradition.
