EP65: Writing a book with a neurodivergent brain [Writing with ADHD mini series]06 Oct 202201:00:12

Hello and welcome to a new episode of The Authority Show. I am so excited to share this one with you and introduce my new 'mini-series'.

In the following few episodes, we are talking about the subject of ADHD and particularly writing with it. Now throughout becoming a book coach, creating this podcast, and even when writing my blueprint guides... I was not aware I had ADHD. This diagnosis came much later, but now it makes complete and utter sense to me. The way my brain processes book writing is not typical, and I believe its due to this, that has armed me with the skills and techniques to coach it in others.

Our guest today is Claire Purcell, a professional copywriter and also one of my coaching clients on the path to writing a novel. In this episode, we're talking about her experience with ADHD, from navigating it at work, to being medicated for it and how this effects her creative 'flow'. We also share both of our diagnoses and how we have learnt to love our 'little quirk in our brain'.

 Key moments from this episode:

  • (1:00) Introduction to our new mini series
  • (7:40) Claire and her career background in copywriting
  • (19:00) Claire's diagnosis
  • (26:00) Working with ADHD
  • (32:00) Jessica's diagnosis
  • (40:00) Writing a book with ADHD

Ep 61: How much time do I need to commit to writing my book?22 Sep 202200:19:49

Welcome back to another episode of The Authority show, and episode 4 of this week's re-launch. In this mini-episode, we are breaking down what time actually means when writing a book, and how to manoeuvre this around your lifestyle.

I'm sharing my 4 pillars and stages of not just the writing, but the forming of a book. From the planning to the writing, to the editing and publishing, and even to years in the future, and how to still see results this far after publication.

Now, there is no perfect day to write a book and there is no spiritual ritual or notebook that can make you do it... it's just you, putting in the necessary work.

We also touch on the idea of front-end perfectionism and how this could be holding you back from reaching these goals.

Highlights from the show:

(2:00) Front end perfectionism

(5:00) Working through mind drama and getting it done

(9:00) Writing

(12:45) Time management in writing

Ep 60: How to let writing your book be easy21 Sep 202200:09:09

In today's short, but powerful episode, I ask you some incredibly thought-provoking questions:

What if, you stopped believing that writing a book was going to be hard?

What if, you stopped believing in finishing the book you started, was going to be hard?

What if, you stopped believing conditions had to be met, for you to be deemed a 'writer'?

What if, you stopped believing that there are too many books on that subject, and there isn't enough room for you in that market?

________________________________________________

Join me in this episode, to dig into what 'hard' really means in terms of writing, and how we can flip this into your motivation for getting it done.

It's time to show up for YOU, and do what YOU need to do.

Ep 59: How to avoid writing the wrong book20 Sep 202200:14:56

So, what do I mean when I say 'Don't write the wrong book.'?

In today's episode, we're unpacking this statement into 3 important points, to make sure you are writing the correct book for yourself and your clients.

1: How to write a personal book, the RIGHT way. In this section, we are reminding you of the brutally honest truth, that your readers do not care about YOU. They think about themselves, but also how YOU can solve their problems.

2: How long is too long? And why you shouldn't make yourself such an expert in EVERYTHING.

3: And writing a book for future clients, not just 'now' clients. We talk about why this is so important for continuing your book sales over the next season of your business.

Ep 056: What happens when you've got too many ideas30 Dec 202100:51:53

What do you do when you’ve got 50 ideas for your book and you can’t get yourself into the driving seat of any of them?

In today’s podcast we’ve got another mini coaching session around how to make progress with your book …and we’re meeting Grainne who was all fired up to write a book that was going to support her business.

Trouble is, when she’s not taking the action she wants, to work out what that business actually IS - it’s very hard to write a book about it.

Ep 055: What to do when you're avoiding your book16 Dec 202100:42:00

‘Why aren’t I writing my book?!’

This is a cry of anguish that I hear from a few clients so I figured  maybe it’s something you can relate to...

You get all fired up, start strong, make great progress…. and then… well, life gets in the way and before you know it, it’s been weeks and then months and the book outline is gathering dust.

That’s exactly what’s happened with my client Lauren, who is writing a book on nutrition and how to have a more mindful relationship with food. We had a coaching call recently to dig into what exactly was going on and why she’d stalled with her book.

Because here’s the thing - your brain is going to come up with some VERY convincing reasons why  you’ve suddenly got 101 more important things to do with your book.

But then what happens….

Well, the book doesn’t get done and you end up beating yourself up about it.

My friend, I’m here to tell you, you can’t hate yourself through to a finished first draft.

So tune into this episode of The AUTHORity Show and listen to this live coaching session. If you’ve ever felt like you were at the mercy of everything you’ve got going on in your life, then this one is definitely for you!

Ep 054: How to actually finish your book02 Dec 202100:40:09

Have you ever noticed that the closer you get to the finish line, the harder it is to actually drag yourself over it?

Trust me when I tell you that this couldn’t apply more than when it comes to writing a book. The nearer you get to getting that sucker on sale, the harder and faster the resistance comes chasing at you.

Which is exactly what’s happened for my client Carolina.

She’s inside my AUTHORity Blueprint programme and has made amazing progress in getting her first draft written.

Problem is … it’s been a while🙈

And now she’s stuck in overwhelm at what she sees as the enormity of the task ahead in getting it finished.

Sound familiar?

If you've ever found yourself spinning your wheels and puzzling over why you JUST CAN'T GET the thing you really want to finish, finished - then this episode is a *must listen* for you.

Tune in as we have a mini coaching session that scratches the surface of what is actually lurking beneath that thought of ‘it all feels like too much’

Ep 053: Why books and podcasts go hand-in-hand18 Nov 202100:44:52

Should you write a book or should you start a podcast??

Given that today’s guest is Podcast Coach and founder of The Podcast Boutique, Lynsay Gould, you’re not going to be too surprised to discover that our answer is do both!

Books and podcasts go hand in hand and in this week’s episode we dig into exactly why they are such natural partners. We look at the ins and outs of starting your own podcast and how it can make your content work really hard for you.

Not surprisingly, people have the same reasons *coughs* excuses *coughs* for not starting a podcast as they do for writing a book - Time, money, fear of judgement, being overwhelmed by the process  - but Lynsay and I discuss the benefits to pushing past those fears and getting the help you need.

We talk about which comes first - the book or the podcast?; how you can be planning your content to make sure you just work hard once and why podcasts are such a powerful book promotion tool.

(and yes, we do get into how you can still use guesting on podcasts to promote your book if you *really* don’t want to start your own!)

Ep 052: Why Being Impatient to Finish Your Book is making it take longer04 Nov 202100:13:38

We've all heard the saying that patience is a virtue. Well, today we're talking about how patience is an effing SUPERPOWER...

What has being impatient got to do with writing your book? Good question! Tell me something:

If you are currently working on a book, are you impatient to get it finished?

If the call to write one has been floating around for a while, are you impatient for all the circumstances to be right so you can start it?

Yeah. How's that working out for you?

In today's episode we dig into what impatience *really* means and how being impatient for progress is actually killing your book.

Highlights from the Show:

(03:51) When we're impatient we want time to move differently

(04:40) How many times have you been really impatient to get something done?

(06:47) Impatience was covering up fear

Ep 049: What's really going on with your writer's block23 Sep 202100:10:46

So here's the thing. I can teach you everything you need to know about writing and publishing and selling a book. (And when I say everything, I do mean EVERYTHING).

But guess what - that's not enough.

You know how I know? Because if it were, you'd have written your freakin' book already!

Knowing the 'stuff' - the strategy, the how-to is all well and good. But if you can't actually manage your mind, then it's not going to get you very far.

You can logically understand how to structure your book, but if you can't get your chimp brain to shut the fuck up, you're never going to push through the resistance to get the work done.

So that's what we're talking about in today's episode. Because when you can get wise to how your brain is working to derail the process, then you can get a handle on it and get the book DONE AND DONE.

Ep 048: How to pick back up with your book when it's been a while...02 Sep 202100:14:09

Has it been a while?

You know the feeling… you got off to a great start with your book (thinking smug is the word here amiright?) but then… well life just got in the way.

And now it’s been an age since you wrote a word. But don’t panic; you are not alone my friend.

There’s one thing most writers have in common — the occasional bout with writer’s block. You know what I’m talking about. It’s that feeling of knowing you really should sit down and write, but no matter how hard you try you just can’t bring yourself to do it.

‘Writer’s block’ is an easy, two-word explanation as to why everything else has taken priority over putting words down on a page. But the truth is that why you’re not writing isn’t quite that simple.

You see, there is something underneath that label that is what you’re allowing to hold you back. (And yes, you’re allowing it because it is a choice.) It’s not just about not feeling like it or struggling to find the words to write, because I assure you that when you’re not writing, there’s a reason.

On this episode of The AUTHORity Show, we’ll talk about some practical ways you can amp yourself up to write again, but that’s just a start. We’re going to dive even deeper to help you uncover the real reason you’re avoiding writing.

Because once you can identify what’s been holding you back, you not only have the ability to get your mojo back, but you’ve got the power to keep it.

Tune in, then come back and see me on IG @jessicakillingley when you’re done.  I want to know what's been holding you back, and what you plan to do to overcome it.

Ep 047: The 10 steps to go from idea to execution with your book [reprint]26 Aug 202100:15:23

One of the traps people fall into when considering writing a book is that they think it’s all about writing. They think if they can do that, they’ll be good to go.

The thing is, writing is only one piece of the entire puzzle. There’s work you’ve got to do before and after that will make the process a whole lot easier. Not only that, but when you do it the right way, it ensures you have a finished product that will do what it’s supposed to do — help solve a problem for your people, but also work hard for you in your business.

In this episode of The AUTHORity Show, I’ll take you through the entire journey of planning, writing, and promoting your book from start to finish. I’ve got ten steps for you to follow that will ensure you don’t miss a thing.

Even if you’ve just started thinking about writing a book, it’s a great place to start.

Much better than diving in head first only to find out you’ve missed some really important bits along the way.

So tune in and take notes because trust me, this is going to help you. And if you’re ready to take the next step and start planning out your book, hit me up on Instagram @jessicakillingly and let me know how I can help.

Ep 046: How to make sure you're writing the right book19 Aug 202100:21:35

So you’re ready to write a book, are you? You know what you’re going to write about and how many words you want it to be, so that’s all you need to know. Right?

Don’t. You. Wish.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is not taking the time — before they write their first word — to make sure it’s the right book. And I know you may be thinking I’ve lost my mind because come on, now...there is no such thing as a wrong book.

Which is, I’m afraid,  bollocks.

So how do you make sure you don’t go down the wrong path before you even get started?

Well, there are a few ways to tell if your book is the one you should write. You’ve got to take the time to think about what solutions you have for your readers, but you’ve got to take a bit of yourself into consideration too, believe it or not.

Because of that, it’s totally worth the time to drill down a bit more, because it can help you be sure you’re heading in the right direction.

On this episode of The AUTHORITY Show, I’ll dive into the 3 main questions you need to ask yourself before you ever sit down to start writing.

They just might save you from getting halfway done — or even years down the road — and realizing it wasn’t the book you’re supposed to write.

So sit back and enjoy the show. When you’re done, come find me on Instagram @jessicakillingley and let me know what your biggest takeaways are. And if this episode has inspired you to write a different book than planned, I’d love to know what the right one is.

Here are the highlights:

{4:35} What you think you know before you write your book

{5:50} The easy book to write can still be the wrong book to write

{6:54} The length of your book is not a selling point

{8:16} Solving specific problems for your readers

{8:52) The 3 focusses you need to nail your bestselling book idea

Ep 045: What's better than being a bestselling author? The answer might surprise you!12 Aug 202100:17:45

So you want to be a bestselling author, do you? Well, before we dive in too deep into the how-to, I must warn you this is one of my favorite ranty topics.

(So this was a perfect episode to dig out of the archives for our chilled August.  I hope you are easing back a little this month, because THAT is when the good creative stuff happens... m'k?

Right - back to it)

Why, you ask? Because wanting to be a bestseller usually means you want that little orange Amazon bestseller band across your book. I get ranty because the truth is that’s just a vanity metric — and it’s all a bunch of bollocks.

All that little tag means is that you did a great job of hacking the Amazon algorithm. Congratulations, what an accomplishment.  (You can probably feel my eyes roll from where you are.)

Don’t get me wrong: being a bestselling book author isn’t a bad thing. It’s all in how you go about getting there. In fact, if your book is actually a bestseller, it means you’ve written something that has the potential to make a huge impact — on your reader, but also on you.

That’s the goal, isn’t it? And if you want to reach that goal, instead of asking how you can write a book that’s a bestseller, you’ve got to ask yourself a better question.

Wondering what that question is? Give this episode a listen and I’ll tell you.

I promise it will help you really drill down to figure out how you can write a book that will continue to sell because it’s making a difference in people’s lives.

(And maybe you can get that little orange banner to stick around for more than 5 seconds.)

When you’re finished, come find me on IG @jessicakillingley and let me know WHY you want to become a bestselling book  author — because I know it’s going to be good.

Here are the highlights:

{4:59} How to be an Amazon bestseller

{7:08} Bestseller in the Traditional Publishing Industry

{9:07} The importance of reviews

{12:32} Overpass limiting beliefs and get results

{16:14} Turn readers into clients

Episode 044: Not sure where to start with your book? Answer these questions first...05 Aug 202100:19:53

Putting off writing your book because you don’t know where the hell to start? You’re not alone, my friend. If I had a pound for every person who said they wanted to write a book but never got around to it, I’d be recording this podcast from a mansion on a hill by the sea.

But much like you, they haven’t started because they actually don’t want to write it. They just don’t have a bloody idea of where to start.

So that is why for the month of August, we are going to be revisiting some episodes from the archives so that whilst you’re chilling over the summer (you ARE chilling, right?) you can get back to basics and get some of that creativity flowing. That way, we can all be ready for the pedal to hit the metal come September - deal?

So where was I? Oh yes...

The thing is, people write and publish books every day, so what do they know that you don’t? Well, the answer to that is exactly why this episode exists.

It starts with asking the right question, which is why do you want to write a book? Please don’t bore me by telling me it’s because you’ve always wanted to write one. I don’t care all that much (and neither does anyone else).

You’re going to have to dig a bit deeper to get to the heart of it — that’s why I’m telling you how on this episode of The AUTHORity Show. I’ll share a bit of my own personal experience to show you how you can figure out exactly what you have to offer to your readers.

When you ask the right questions, you’ll know why your book needs to exist and who it can help. That’s the key to writing something that’s beneficial — to both you and your reader.

Tune in and take notes, because this could be the difference between sitting around wanting to write a book and you actually doing it.

When you’re done, hit me up on IG and let me know how this helped you and if you’ve figured it out, tell me what book you’re going to write.

Ep 043: Pros & Cons of contributing a chapter to an 'inspirational stories' book29 Jul 202100:15:18

So this fabulous person you know in the entrepreneurial space is putting together a book of inspiring stories and *gasp* they’ve asked you to contribute. Before you break out a bottle of bubbly to celebrate this amazing opportunity to become a published author, we need to have a chat.

I know it seems like a really great marketing plan to be a part of a book like this, because it will get your name out there and give you the publicity you’ve been looking for.

But when you break it all down, it could actually end up being a waste of time, energy, and money simply because the outcome won’t end up like you’re expecting.

I talk about this subject on my Instagram all the time, but to be clear, when I say ‘talk’ I really mean I get quite ranty. But that’s only because I am very passionate about making sure your hard work pays off in the end.

Survey says: in this case, it won’t.

On this episode of The AUTHORity Show, I’m talking all about why I think contributing to someone else’s book isn’t what you think it will be. I thought it might be more productive to share my thoughts in a less-ranty, more moderated way so you fully understand why I think there are better ways to share your story.

If contributing to someone else’s book is something you’ve been considering, I highly recommend tuning into this episode.

Of course I’d love to hear what you think about it all, so swing by my Instagram @jessicakillingley and let me know what you think.

And if you disagree with my thoughts, I love to be proved wrong. Let me know why you think this is actually a brilliant marketing plan — just maybe you’ll be able to convince me.

Here are the highlights:

{1:51} A massive, massive, massive waste of time

{3:57} Calling yourself a published author without doing the work

{6:30} It is basically the same as buying ad space

{7:57} Inspiration stories belong on Instagram

{9:55} It's easy to be a best-seller with 20 contributors

{12:43} Have you had a positive experience?

Are you ready to get started on YOUR book? Wish there was one place that walked you through everything you need to know? Ep 042: How to from a first to a final draft22 Jul 202100:17:46

So when you tell me you’re going to write a book, I’ll be the first to make sure you know in advance that the actual writing part is a relatively small part of your journey.

Now I realize that could sway you from doing it altogether, but because I really care about you and your book is extremely important, I’m going to be straight with you from the start.

Because let’s be honest here: you aren’t writing a book for the fun of it. You’re writing it because you want it to work hard for you in your business and make a big impact on the people who will read it.

And in order to get people to actually read it, we’ve got to make sure it’s not pure shit.

So how do we do that? Well, on this episode of The AUTHORity Show, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to take your first rough draft all the way through making it fit to print.

Just know that no one loves this process. But if you want a better book on the other side, you buckle up, do the work, and get it done so you can celebrate with tons of sales (and brilliant reviews).

Grab a pen, tune in, and take notes because I’m covering a good bit today. Hit me up on Instagram @jessicakillingley and let me know what you liked most about it.

Know that you’re going to do a book, but … just not quite yet? Then you are going to want to get yourself a front row seat in my new workshop Get Ready To Write…  A 90 minute workshop that will teach you simple steps you can take now to make writing your book a hell of a lot easier later!

Here are the highlights:

{0:58} The first draft will be a complete dumpster fire

{3:10} Read through with clean eyes

{5:57} The beta readers

{7:20} Clean up the obvious errors BEFORE you seek feedback

{9:59} Get a professional proofreader

{11:45} The main editorial stages

Ep 041: 'Write from the scar, not the wound'15 Jul 202100:54:05

One of the things you’ll hear me say sometimes is that if you’re going to write a book about your life, no one cares. Well, that is unless you can take your life experience and what you’ve learned from it and use it to help others.

That’s precisely what Rhiannon Spurgeon did when she decided to write her book, Grief without Guilt: It Gets Better if You Let it, Even if it’s Complicated.

After facing a significant loss all on her own, she realised how important support is not only when grieving the loss, but also learning to live with the new layer of identity that comes along with it.

Her journey of writing such an emotional book has come with a lot of lessons, and Rhiannon is here on this episode of The AUTHORity Show to share them.

While she started writing from a place of digging into the wound, her completed book you see today comes more from the scar, because it was refined after moving through healing.

Rhiannon is a great example of how a painful experience can not only be used to help others, but can also connect you to a greater purpose that will continue to aid people in healing for years to come.

Tune in and let me tell you, it would be smart to have a box of tissues nearby, because if I’m crying, chances are you will, too.

If you’ve experienced something in your life that you know can help others find their way through it, come share it with me on Instagram @jessicakillingley and let’s chat about how you can get started.

You can find out more about Rhiannon and her work at the Totally Awesome Women's Network here and read more about her book here and buy it on amazon.

Ep 040: How your story makes your book better08 Jul 202100:39:29

Now, a lot of the time when someone tells me they want to write a book about their life story I tell them that no one cares — because most of the time it’s true.

But if you’ve got significant life transformation that lays the groundwork for helping others do the same?

Well, now you’ve got yourself a book that will sell.

So how do you take what you’ve been through and have worked to overcome and turn it into a powerful coaching tool? No one can show you the ropes better than Bridie Walker.

She busted through all expectations and now has a coaching practice, her program Unstoppable, and her new book, Unstoppable: How to Silence Your Self-Doubt and Turn Up Your Power, just published on July 2nd.

Bridie is basically a model student when it comes to taking her story and turning it into a book funnel that will bring new people looking for life transformation straight to her door.

Bridie came on this episode of The AUTHORity Show to share a bit of her journey, as well as how she navigated the book writing and publishing process.

Ep 038: How your book drives high-ticket offers [mini series]24 Jun 202100:16:15

Well, here we are at the final episode of our book funnel mini-series and I’ve saved the best for last. Today we’re talking high-ticket, baby! (It’s always my favorite subject.)

So far, we’ve looked at WTF a book funnel actually is, how it can grow your membership, and how you can use it to sell digital products. While all of these are fantastic, I have one unspoken goal for all of my clients, and that’s to make back their investment (at the very least).

As much as I’d love for them to do that with book sales or $200 workshops, they’ll get the most bang for their buck when they are able to get clients to invest in high-ticket offers.

That's why in this episode of The AUTHORity Show, I’ll cover what a high-ticket item looks like, why clients might choose it over other offers, and why these types of experiences can go for a larger investment.

Then you will have heard every episode and will have everything you need to set up your book funnel the way you want to set it up. You can include one thing, a few of them, or if it strikes your fancy, you can use them all.

Just be sure to hang around until the end because there’s an added bonus that will round out our book funnel series — you won’t want to miss it.

Tune in and when you’re done, come find me on Instagram @jessicakillingley and let me know how you plan to use your book funnel.

Here are the highlights:
{2:11} Why would someone take up a high ticket offer?
{4:10} The importance of maximising PR on launch
{5:47} A high ticket solves a higher percentage of the problem
{7:51} Make the biggest impact you can
{10:42} Think a little differently
{12:46} The journey doesn't stop on publication day

Ep 037: How your book can sell more courses [mini series]17 Jun 202100:12:54

So here we are at our third installment of totally nerding out on how book funnels can be used to grow your business. If you’ve listened with any sort of care to the previous two episodes, you know by now that growing your business is the entire point of writing a book.

But before we proceed, let’s recap, shall we? In week one we talked about WTF a book funnel actually is. Week two was about how your book is a powerful way to grow your membership.

If you haven’t listened to them yet, stop what you’re doing, then go back and start with episode 35.

But if you’re all caught up, then it’s time to discuss how your book can be a funnel into your digital products to further grow your reach. When I say ‘digital products,’ I’m talking about workshops, an online self-study course, or even a larger group coaching program.

And when you place your book at the top of the funnel leading into them, you’ve got a beautifully stacked suite of offers to move your people from one step to the next.

In this episode of The AUTHORity Show, we’ll reverse engineer what it looks like so you can start your people at the beginning, then through each offer you meet their current need, then they move to the next level.

This method helps you carry them through the journey so they can reach that evolved state they’re seeking. The best part is they’re happy and you’re putting good stuff into the universe — and it’s coming right back to you through your growing business. Win-win, my friend.

Are you ready to nerd out with me on the third installment of our book funnel mini-series? Give it a listen, then when you’re done hit me up on Instagram @jessicakillingley and let me know what you enjoyed most from this episode.

Here are the highlights:
{1:49} Stacking up your funnel
{3:12} The halo effect
{4:57} Reverse engineering the funnel

Ep 036: How your book can grow your membership [ Mini Series]10 Jun 202100:16:14

Last week I started talking to you about why a book funnel is key for growing your business. So if you haven’t yet listened to that episode, you’re going to want to start there.

This week I’m continuing on that rant from the next angle, which is how your book can be extremely effective in growing your membership program. And if you don’t have a membership program yet, then that’s all the more reason you should give this episode a listen.

A membership can become that next part of the journey for your readers, because it helps them integrate and implement what they’ve learned in your book. It gives them a space to come together with others who understand, so they can get the support they need to make your solution a part of their daily lives.

In this episode, I’ll be going over the pros and cons of having a membership, and how you can connect your membership with your book. We’ll also cover a few reasons a membership program may not be ideal for you depending on how you help others.

But be sure to hear me out, because for most people it’s one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways that you can scale and grow your business.

Tune in to this episode of The AUTHORity Show for all the details. And if you want to hear an inspiring story about someone who’s crushing it in the membership world, check out this previous episode with Faye Cornhill’s story. You can even follow her @fayecornhill if you like.

And if you’re ready to take things a step further and start planning out your book, there are several ways I can help you do that. Check out the options then pick your poison and let’s get you started.

Here are the highlights:

{2:17} Create a space for your readers to come together

{3:16} Memberships add the how to the why & what

{6:10} Memberships are not always a good idea

{9:05} Make sure your messaging works

{11:49} The allure of exclusivity

{12:45} Using your book as a perk of membership

Ep 033: Turning your course into a book20 May 202100:24:46

A lot of coaches and course creators really wonder if they should consider turning their signature coaching program into a book. So I turned to my Instagram stories to ask my people if they wanted to know more about it.

The response was a huge, resounding YES.

Now I could just hit you up with a huge spoiler and say if you want to know if you should do it, the answer is a big, fat yes.

While that would be short and sweet, it certainly wouldn’t make a good podcast.

Instead, I’m handing you five brilliant reasons why it’s not only a good idea, but they also help support why you should absolutely consider it.

I’ll even give you tips on how to know if now isn’t quite the right time for you. But even if it’s not, you’ll know when your time comes.

So you’ve done the planning and the outlining for your book, but haven’t written a word yet. You know it’s go time, but why does it feel so damn difficult?

You sit down to write, but all you end up doing is staring at a blank page. Next thing you know, you’re filling your schedule with other tasks that have nothing to do with writing your book, then think, ‘Look at that. I’ve got no time to write.’

Ep 031: How to get your first 50 reviews06 May 202100:23:56

So you may think you’ve arrived when you’re given that little orange bestseller banner on Amazon, but the reality is you can achieve that just by hacking their algorithm. If you really want to measure how well your marketing is working, stop focusing on your chart position, because it just doesn’t matter all that much.

So what does matter?

Reviews.

Your book’s reviews are really the only thing that matters, in my opinion. Because when you have good reviews, it tells you two things: you wrote a good book and you’ve been intentional about your marketing.

It means you’ve done the work to write a book that is powerful in helping change others’ lives, but also that you are also keeping the momentum going to get an even farther reach to bring new people into your world.

I mean, that’s why you wrote the book after all, right?!

On today’s episode of The AUTHORity Show, we’ll talk about why reviews matter so much, and I’ll share step-by-step strategies that will help you get your first 50 5-star reviews.

Give it a listen, then go out and get yourself some reviews, then come back to tell me about it.

If you’ve already had some beautiful 5-star reviews, share them with me. I love seeing them and celebrating with you, but they’re also a good way to remind yourself that the hard work you put in was all worth it.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{3:35} Continually growing your audience while writing your book

{4:04} Why book reviews are so important

{7:19} Getting early readers from clients, super fans, and those who appear as case studies in your book

{10:30} Reminding your early readers to review your book

{11:54} Thanking your early reviewers

{13:17} Running a competition to encourage sales and reviews

{16:55} Feeling validation for your book

Ep 030: What's the best way to get your book published?29 Apr 202100:14:36

So you have your mind set on getting your book traditionally published, do you? You envision some big publishing company reading your book, beaming with pride as they tell you how amazing your book is, then having it show up as a bestseller instantly.

The thing is, that’s not how it usually goes. Traditional publishing is a very slow, long, drawn-out process, and the end result might not look exactly like you think it will.

Don’t get me wrong — traditional publishing has its place and that’s where a lot of my experience lies. But you’ve got to make sure you are approaching that route to market for the right reasons, because if you don’t, it will be massively underwhelming and the outcome might not look the way you think it should.

On this episode of The AUTHORity Show, I’m giving you an inside look at traditional publishing by way of a snippet from my course, The AUTHORity Blueprint. That way you can weigh the options and decide whether it’s the best way for you to get your book into the hands of your readers.

And if you’re interested in participating in The AUTHORity Blueprint, while the live session is closed, the self-study option is ready and waiting for you right here.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{2:12} Getting a literary agent

{4:46} What publishing houses care about

{5:23} A publisher doesn’t do everything for you

{9:53} The sliding scales of publishing

Ep 029: How to outline your book in one day22 Apr 202100:12:34

If you’ve ever uttered the words, ‘I don’t know where to start with my book’ or ‘I don’t have time to write it,’ you’re going to want to listen up. The reality is, you don’t have to spend days upon days or weeks on end getting yourself prepared and ready to write your book.

How do you get started? Well, your most brilliant option is to schedule a VIP Day with me and we’ll get it all done.

But if you’re not quite ready for that, you can listen in to this episode of The AUTHORity Show and we’ll do an imaginary one together to get you going.

So what does that look like? Other than enjoying some coffee and scenery, we’ll take it step by step and go through...

  • Mapping
  • Brainstorming
  • Outlining
  • Chapter breakdown

And just like that you’ll go from not knowing where the hell to start to being ready to write your first draft — all in a single day.

So when you’re telling yourself you don’t have the time to write a book, this exercise proves that’s a complete load of bollocks (but we already knew that, didn’t we?).

And maybe you actually didn’t know where to start, but now you do.

Ready to get all the details during our imaginary VIP Day together? Then grab a cup of tea and tune in to this episode to hear in more detail how we’ll work together to get a plan in place for your book.
