Episode 105 - Seuls Ensemble (Alone, Together)17 sept. 202603:47:08

JOIN THE FAMILY: The Astrocast | Weekly Astronomy/Astrophotography Podcast | Patreon

WELCOME BAAAACK to The EUROCAST! In this weeks episode, guest host Mark Lindley takes The Astrocast to Europe for a trip through Switzerland, the French Alps, and the Vosges Mountains, where online friendships finally become face-to-face conversations.

Between missed train stops, passport trouble, cloudy skies, and a shared meal, Mark catches up with Dr. Klaus Schweitzer and Tim from Belgium. There’s plenty of astrophotography talk along the way: traveling with camera lenses, remote observatories, processing software, simple star trackers, and knowing when to upgrade your gear.

But the moment that makes the trip comes under the stars, when Tim sees the Milky Way for the first time. Mark closes his journey with a personal reflection on loneliness, friendship, and finding your people, followed by his original poem, “Alone Together.”

Come for the stars. Stay for the company.

Featured guests: Mark Lindley, Dr. Klaus Schweitzer, Tim, and Roo.

Field-recording note: Parts of the car conversation have rough audio. To skip ahead to the cottage conversation, jump from 36:05 to 1:16:40.

Episode 101 - Nico is Back!31 juil. 202601:51:24

**YOUTUBE VERSION HERE!!!*** - you'll wanna see this!

How big does another galaxy look with the naked eye? In Chile’s Atacama Desert, Nico Carver saw the Large Magellanic Cloud hanging in the sky—so large that members of his group initially thought it was an ordinary cloud!

Welcome BACK to The Astrocast! Roo sits down with Nico Carver of Nebula Photos to discuss his Atacama astrophotography workshop, the Southern Milky Way, 3D-printed astro gear, AI, smart scopes, remote observatories, mono versus one-shot color and much more. We also explore Nico’s incredible images of Gamma Velorum, the Vela Supernova Remnant, the LMC, Corona Australis and the Southern Cross-to-Carina region.

Thank you to Nico for being such a wonderful friend of the show!

Welcome BAAAACK to The Astrocast! This week, Roo recaps some of the preparations he is taking before setting off on a 4,000 mile round trip adventure to the darkest skies he has ever seen. Afterwards, he sits down with a new friend to talk about a VERY fascinating field, capturing exoplanet transits! Roo is extremely excited at the thought of capturing his own transit, and will definitely keep you posted on how his progress goes, as he makes it! If there's enough interest in this, I would consider doing a video episode going through all the steps!

HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY ASTROCAST!

Welcome BAAAACK to The Astrocast! This week on the show, Roo takes you through SWITCHING TO NINA! He's finally decided to pull the trigger and move away from the ASIAIR for his main widefield imaging rig, and there are a LOT of choices that need to be considered to make that happen! We also discuss some of the hardware choices that go in to it, including choosing a PC. Check out the links below for all the things we discuss this week!

Finally, Roo talks about the incredibly exciting new partnership with ASTROPEAK OBSERVATORIES! If you would like to reserve one of the remaining piers for the first run (there will be more in the future of course, but early birds get in first!) make sure you join the Patreon!!!!   Not only will you get five dollars off your mount (which makes your Patreon/Discord membership free!) but you will get access to the AMAZING community of like minded individuals and all of the awesomeness that comes with it! We are also going to start doing standing monthly tutorial days where myself and others will get on video chat with the rest of the group and answer any and all questions that you might have! Finally, I probably don't need to tell you this, but Nathan, proprietor of Astropeak Observatory, is a member of the Discord as well! That's not to mention all the other incredibly bright minds that are part of the group...it really is a special collective!

Episode 75 - Legendary Mic Edition29 oct. 202501:00:01

 ✨ Agena Astro | 🔭 High Point Scientific | 📦 Amazon | 🌌 First Light Optics

Welcome baaaack to The Astrocast! We celebrate a large milestone this week with our third, and FINAL (hopefully) microphone! Please welcome, all the way from broadcast Nirvana, the Shure SM7B! If the Astrocast was Goku, we'd have some GIANT hair by now!

If I sound particularly silky smooth this week - get used to it! I finally took the plunge and upgraded the trusty Rode PodMic to the legendary Shure SM7B. A giant thank you to all the supporters and longtime listeners of the show, when I started The Astrocast I remember looking at the SM7B and thinking, "I'll never have one of those!" - and now we do! Thank you!!!

THIS WEEK on the show - Roo's recent great luck with clear weather has clearly run out - with a veritable lake of rain hitting Charlotte over the last week, with no end in sight. At least the kids will get no rain for Halloween! Reactions to last weeks episode on Reflect Orbital, plus the man who "finished" astrophotography! We also go over the many uses of GPT for AP, which you may have not thought of! That and so much more, all on this week's Astrocast!

If you haven't yet, please consider donating to the show's Patreon and (more importantly) becoming a member of our private, members-only Discord!!! "Swan Song"

Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868–1921) was an American astronomer whose work quietly but profoundly reshaped our understanding of the universe. As a “computer” at Harvard College Observatory, she spent countless hours examining photographic plates of stars, and in doing so discovered a relationship between the brightness and period of Cepheid variable stars. This “Leavitt Law” became the cosmic yardstick that allowed astronomers like Hubble to measure the true scale of the Milky Way and the expansion of the universe. Though she worked in relative obscurity during her lifetime, her insight remains one of the cornerstones of modern cosmology.
