Lux Lawless Dark, Dreamy, Cinematic When it came to naming her collective project, it could only be something that worked like a charm. So musician Lydia Macintosh conjured Lux Lawless, pairing the Latin for light (“I like to believe it is a protective light around the project,” she explains) with a word to honour her grandmother. “She was a wonderful woman and loved the spaghetti westerns we’d watch together when I was a kid.” The Los Angeles-based group formed during the pandemic out of Secret Hand Studios as a means to grow artistic community at a strange time. Sonically, their bouquet of tones is darker, moody and cinematic, paired with poetic lyricism that’s as clear and intentional as a spell. With lightning speed, McIntosh created multiple singles, EPs and an album with producer Matt McJunkins, guitarist Nick Perez, drummer Jeff Friedl, and mastering engineer Mike Pozzi. An integral part of Lux Lawless’s power is held in the freedom of the live experience, which includes guitarist Randy Andrade, bassist Victor Marquez, and drummer Trey Cornish. As a deeply intuitive person, McIntosh sees her art as a way of transmuting pain into something beautiful outside of herself as centuries of artists have done before, knowingly or unknowingly. Chicago native, Alvino Bennett began playing drums at the age of 10 with the William Penn Elementary School drum and bugle corps. Soon after, he was keeping rhythm for various local bands, and by the age of 14 Bennett began traveling the country, working the club circuit. At 17, he was spotted, approached and asked to play with blues legend KoKo Taylor. Around the same time, Bennett had opportunities to play with many other blues and R&B luminaries like Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Cash McCall, and Mighty Joe Young, just to name a few. In 1974, Bennett was asked to tour with the late great songstress, Minnie Riperton. Touring with Riperton opened the doors for many other projects, including working with Gong Show Guest, Jaye P. Morgan and Motown’s best kept secret, The Originals. In addition, Alvino also worked with the The Sylvers and recorded with other leading Motown artists. Bennett hit on one of the biggest projects of his career in 1978 when he joined the million-unit selling R&B band, “L.T.D.”. Bennett’s awesome reputation spread and he became a highly sought after drummer. Alvino has played with music legends like Cheryl Lynn, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Loggins, Bryan Ferry, Robin Trower, Sheena Easton, Slash’s Blues Ball, Patrice Rushen, Little Richard, Bo Diddley… and many more. Don Cromwell is a professional producer/songwriter and musician based in Los Angeles. Originally from the East Bay Area in Northern California, he spent several years in the Seattle music scene before relocating to Southern California.  In the early 1980s, Don became a fixture at the avant-garde label Unicorn Records, writing songs for and performing on many of their diverse releases. From 1983 through 1987, Don toured as the bass player with the renowned pop group Air Supply. Speedfossil is the creation of singer/songwriter Garret Vandermolen, who returns to the scene with his 4th collection of songs, a new EP entitled Room With A VU, Vol.1, his debut release on Boston’s Sonic Escort label. Over five separate days in 2023, Garret worked with engineer and co-producer David Minehan (The Neighborhoods, The Replacements) at his Boston-based Woolly Mammoth studio, recording five songs. It was a reunion for Garret and David after a 25-year hiatus! Playing on the recordings are Michael Scotti (bass, vocals), Dan Jordan (guitar/vocals,) and Chris Walsh (drums). These musicians have all played with Garret at various Speedfossil gigs since 2016. As with all of Speedfossil’s previous releases, Garret handled vocals, guitars, keyboards, and some percussion. The EP is hot on the heels of Speedfossil’s 2022 full-length, NO ANESTHESIA, which was lauded by fans and critics alike for clever songwriting and great pop hooks; the live band has been described as a combination of “Randy Newman meets Husker Du,” with Garret’s songs drawing comparisons to those of Fountains of Wayne, The Replacements, and The Beatles. Musoscribe called the songs on NO ANESTHESIA “fist-pumping, convertible-top-down music that isn’t dumbed down for the masses. There’s an indie character to the songs, but musicianship and production are major league.” Room With A VU, Vol. 1, is the first in a series of EPs that will feature songs all recorded in the same studio with the same engineer/producer. The concept was to present the songs to the band, work quickly to put them together and get demos to the producer/engineer-then record them all in a short period in one specific studio. Vol. 2 is slated for sometime in the Fall of 2024 (and the complete sessions, Vol 1.and Vol. 2 to be released on a vinyl LP in late 2024). Over 5 separate days in 2023, Garret worked with David Minehan at his Woolly Mammoth studio to record and mix the 5 songs. Originally slated to be released in September 2023 on Boston’s Red on Red Records, plans tragically changed in June 2023 when label founder, Justine Covault, died suddenly at the age of 59. Garret was devastated to lose a friend, colleague, mentor and a musical home. After entertaining a couple of offers from other labels, Garret decided to release Room With A VU, Vol. 1 on the new Sonic Escort imprint, a full length label collective out of Boston. Whether its upbeat rockers like, “Sweetheart”, featuring a guest vocal appearance from Linda Bean Pardee of The Chelsea Curve, the throwback Roy Orbison-esque “Frozen Drops of Fire”, or the horn laden “irl”, the EP really showcases Garret’s songwriting chops, as well as the production prowess and sonic power of Minehan and his Woolly Mammoth studio. As one astute listener stated, “this EP is definitely next level!”. Speedfossil will once again be supporting Room With A VU, Vol. 1, with shows throughout the Northeast. Second Language is an American alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles. The band’s name derived from their view of music as a universal second language. They performed and recorded together from 1981 to 1996 and gained recognition with their debut record in 1984, the Souvenirs EP, which garnered college radio play and even commercial airplay, unusual for an unsigned band. The band gigged regularly at venues in Los Angeles and opened for notable bands like Love And Rockets. Blancmange, Howard Devoto, Berlin and Oingo Boingo. In 1996 the band independently released their first album WrongSpeak. The core of the band since 1984, Jessie Jacobson (lead vocalist, songwriter, guitarist), Jarrett Lesko (bass) & Brian Bielski (drums), along with a host of other talented multi-instrumentalists and vocalists sharing multiple influences, created post-punk, new wave and indie rock music utilizing an improvisational composing style and powerful stage performances. The band went on hiatus in 1996. In 2001, Jessie, a trans woman, underwent a personal transition in order to manifest her authentic self. She briefly left music behind, went back to school and earned an MA in Psychology and worked as a therapist, but soon found herself drawn back to singing, songwriting, improvising and recording from a whole new more feminine/feminist perspective, literally with a new voice, and back to working with her former bandmates, in particular Brian and Jarrett. Second Language reformed in 2014 on a part-time basis to improvise together culminating in producing new studio recordings 2022-2024, that are ongoing. During 2023-2024, Second Language will release seven albums of back catalog and unreleased material as well as a new album, recorded with a legendary group of producers: Tony Berg, Ron Fair, Michael James, Earle Mankey, Frank Wolf, and Ken Jordan, along with the band itself. The result is the first in a series of Second Language archival and contemporary stereo & Atmos single releases on Alternator Records, mixed by Michael James in 2023-2024. Alternator Records is a modern label founded by legendary producer/mixer Michael James. Hi, my name is Jackson Gillies. I’m 24 years old and I live in Santa Barbara, CA but was born and raised on Long Island, NY until I was 13. I was consistently subjected to fantastic music from a very early age. My parents attended over 100 Grateful Dead shows, and cranked their music throughout the house as I was growing up- Neil Young, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers etc.. I started playing guitar when I was 14 years old. I was exclusively a musical theatre kid until I discovered the guitar. My first love was The Avett Brothers and their music awoke something within me that said “I need to be able to do that.” I began learning every single one their songs on acoustic guitar, and soon mimicking their writing style and stage presence. A few years later around the age of 17 I discovered John Mayer and his incredible craft. An effortless blend of classic blues music with pop and folk lyrics and structure. Funny enough, I only discovered him because he started playing with the Grateful Dead! I’ve been releasing my own original music since I was 19 and I’ve struggled with it greatly. I am a perfectionist and would always fall out of favor with my works as soon as they were released and doubt myself if people wanted to hear them. I stopped releasing music for a while- until this year. I wrote, performed, recorded, mixed and mastered my first ever album. The songs are all recorded without a click track, captured on an AKG 414 with no tuning or comping. The record is entitled “High & Low” and will be released on April 26. Had it not been for the melodic and accomplished guitar work of Peter Albin flowing out of an upper story window at 1090 Page Street in the early summer of 1965, there might never have been a Big Brother and the Holding Company. It was on that day that Sam Andrew happened down Page Street in San Francisco and was so impressed by what he heard, that he went in and introduced himself. Peter was born on June 6, 1944 in San Francisco. He began playing guitar at an early age and became involved in the folk scene of the early 60s. While attending The College of San Mateo, Peter and his brother Rodney played in a bluegrass band called the Liberty Hill Aristocrats. By the time Peter met Sam in 1965, he had aspirations of forming a band that would write and perform children’s songs. One of the first songs he wrote while working with children at The Marin Jewish Community Day Camp, north of San Francisco, was “Caterpillar”. This song went on the appear on the first Big Brother and the Holding Company Album. But the guitarist who inspired the first meeting with Sam Andrew ended up making the transition to bass and has spent the majority of his career with that instrument. Although his fine guitar work can be heard on cuts such as “Coo-Coo”, “Oh, Sweet Mary”, and “Turtle Blues” and also on Big Brother LPs “Be A Brother” and “How Hard It Is”. Witty and personable, Peter provided much of the on-stage commentary and also served as the liaison for the group with managers and promoters. Also, in the early days of Big Brother, before Janis, Peter did most of the lead vocals for the band. Among the many songs he sang were “Blow My Mind” and “Down On Me”. Even after Janis, the first album finds Peter’s lead on “Blindman”, “Light Is Faster Than Sound”, and “Caterpillar”. Peter’s musical pursuits have also extended beyond Big Brother and the Holding Company. He has played with Country Joe and the Fish and can be heard on their 1969 Vanguard album “Here We Are Again”. He later toured in an all-star band with Joe McDonald that cut an album outside Paris (Paris Sessions, Vanguard – 1973) in September of 1972. In 1982, Peter was one of the founding members of the Bay Area super group, The Dinosaurs. Along with Peter, the group consisted of, John Cipollina, Barry Melton, Merl Saunders, Robert Hunter, and Spencer Dryden. Peter has loaned many items to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland. The most notable piece is his legendary psychedelic Fender Jazz Bass from 1968 which is now a popular museum attraction. Astrid young is a singer-songwriter-musician with influences that range from classical to heavy rock, with a healthy dose of blues and country in between. She’s been playing music since she was able to walk. She likes to say, "know my music and you'll know me."  Her discography dates back to 1984 and since then she’s played or sang on more than forty releases, some her own, but most as a side-musician or backup singer. She’s been in a lot of rock bands, and her solo acoustic shows have been compared to "Alice In Chains Unplugged." Music Connection Magazine once said she was "More closely related to Angus" and she thinks that's pretty cool. The visionary Ethiopian-American vocalist, composer, and cultural activist Meklit has released Ethio Blue, a prescient six-song collection attuned to inner landscapes. Recorded with GRAMMY-winning songwriter / producer Dan Wilson, Ethio Blue is powered by an array of Ethio Jazz-inspired grooves, while presenting some of Meklit’s most personal songwriting to date.  Meklit previously released the single “Ethio Blue,” an homage to Mongo Santamaria’s seminal hit “Afro-Blue,” in honor of the rich legacy bequeathed by her forebearers. This followed “Antidote”, a bouncing ode to emotional wisdom and self-knowledge, powered by an array of funk, arpeggios, and Ethio Jazz. “The music of Ethio Blue was designed to “heal ourselves and nourish our hearts,” writes Meklit. “I realized I need to make a record reminding us - myself included - of the power we have and the spirit of resiliency that can refresh us.” On Ethio Blue, Meklit’s vision is channeled through the prowess of her longtime band, which includes Ethiopian pianist/keyboardist Kibrom Birhane, saxophone maestro Howard Wiley, drummer Colin Douglas, percussionist Marco Peris Coppola, and bassists Sam Bevan and Miles Jay. Guest artists featured on Ethio Blue include legendary Macedonian clarinetist Ismail Lumanovski, Los Angeles singer/songwriter Sara Mulford on synth and keyboard, and Dan Wilson on OP-1 synth. Gary Hector is a singer songwriter from Trinidad and Tobago in The Caribbean. The former leader and frontman for seminal Caribbean rock n roll bands ODDFELLOWS LOCAL and JOINTPOP, Hector is now on a solo career and will simply be known as, GARY HECTOR. Trinidad and Tobago is home to the music of Calypso and Soca, and the National Instrument the Steelpan, but Hectors’ song writing is based on the classic Rock n Roll, Outlaw Country, Americana songbook, without neglecting the landscape of his homeland. Recognized at home as a pioneer and legend, he is no newcomer to the scene, as he led, and recorded one landmark album with ODDFELLOWS LOCAL (1991-1995) which created the underground scene in Trinidad. His debut solo album was NATIONAL TRASH (3rd Aug 2021). With the first single called “TODAY I RIDE ALONE “(1st July 2021) Both are hauntingly beautiful slices of Americana, with shades of classic country and classic rock n roll.
