Homemaker Portrait | Naomi Fata15 Nov 202301:21:04

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

In today’s episode I am talking with In-the-Trenches homemaker, Naomi Fata. She’s been married 16 years and has 3 kids, ages 8 to 13. She homeschools and runs a sewing and alterations business out of her home--she is a very busy lady. We discuss how she has learned/is learning to balance homemaking, schooling and a home business through compromise, firm boundaries and letting go of some expectations. Naomi is passionate about teaching others how sewing can help them make the most of their clothing and home decor resources.

Over the years, Naomi realized that this "stay-at-home dream life" she asked God for does not come with ease. It is challenging to manage it all, but she is learning to differentiate between what God has and has not called her to do in each new day. Whether running a home business or not, this principle applies to all of us as homemakers as we seek to thrive in our calling and not be distracted or overwhelmed by all the possibilities before us. I know you will be encouraged and learn something from Naomi's story of home.

Full Time Homemaking Deep Dive, Part 1| So, You Want to Be a Full Time Homemaker? 27 Aug 202501:22:40

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

Today begins a 2-part Deep Dive series on full time homemaking with guest, Jessica Fisher. We are NOT here to give you hard and fast rules about whether or not you should be a full time homemaker. Our goal is to affirm your desire to stay home full time as legitimate and not out of the realm of possibilities.

In this episode we discuss:

  • The WHY of full time homemaking
  • How to make the shift to ft homemaking
  • The history of homemaking and why it fell out of fashion in the last 60 years
  • What does the Bible say? Is there a specific mandate for full time homemaking?
  • Common barriers to becoming a ft homemaker: lack of support, fears, money
  • What to do before you quit your job
  • What to do when you are ready to make the switch

Next week, in part 2, we will talk about thriving as a full time homemaker by understanding God’s design for your homemaking and learning to manage the three common trouble spots of expectations, time and money.

Summer Reading Re-Run | JR Miller's Homemaking Ch. 6 & 731 May 202301:47:49

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

Today's installment of this Summer Reading Re-Run:
Ch. 6 "Brothers & Sisters" and Ch. 7 "The Home Life"
In chapter 6, we will look at the duties of siblings to one another; in chapter 7, all the little daily things that contribute to a flourishing home life.

The Art of Home is taking a break for the beginning of summer 2023. That gives you an opportunity to catch up on old episodes or join in for another round of reading and studying JR Miller's classic, Homemaking, published in 1882. For the next five weeks your host, Allison, will read two chapters from this short book.

To help you retain and apply the timeless lessons of Rev. Miller, The Art of Home has created a free study guide for each chapter. Use the link below to receive your downloadable, printable copy. All resources created by The Art of Home for this summer reading series are provided free of charge.

Since we are presenting the book in audio form via the podcast you do not need a hard copy. However, it might be helpful for working through the reflection questions. This book is in the public domain, therefore you can access the text for free in various places online. We will link some below. If you desire, you can purchase a paperback copy for less than $10 on Amazon.

NEW FOR 2023: FACEBOOK DISCUSSION GROUP! A private  forum for all of us to share questions, insights and ideas that come up while listening to the book each week and working through the study guide. Click the link below to join.

Homemaker Portrait | Alexis Molnar03 May 202300:59:49

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

On today’s episode I am talking with in-the-trenches homemaker, Alexis Molnar. She is wife to Eric and homeschooling mama to their two children. Alexis shares her journey from working girl to stay-at-home mom, to eventually letting go of her part-time gig and focusing all her efforts on homemaking and homeschooling.

Eric lost his job late last year and that was the catalyst for starting his own business. Alexis openly shares how God is teach her to trust Him despite the fears that can come with a single-income, entrepreneurial family life. As usual we talk about priorities, expectations, fails, wins and we geek out together over our love of air fryers.

Pillars of Homemaking Deep Dive | IDENTITY05 Apr 202301:39:19

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

I am diving into the first pillar of homemaking, Identity, with my good friend, author, speaker and podcaster, Susan Macias. This deep dive is the first in a series on Four Pillars of Homemaking: Identity, Values & Priorities, Rhythms & Routines, and Community. We are going to contrast what God has to say about identity with what the world has to say about where to find your identity. Then we will look at some common identity thieves—things homemakers may be tempted to look to for identity and how to avoid falling into those traps.

Summer is winding down and so is my short series on reflections from a homemaker’s summer. In previous episodes, I’ve shared with you the lessons I learned about my homemaking weakness when climbing hills in Switzerland and the great examples of hospitality I experienced in Italy.

Today, I’m sharing a lesson learned a little closer to home. I’m reflecting on the joy of helping others make a home, even though it may cost me time, effort and resources.

In today’s show, I am chatting with in-the-trenches homemaker, Kelly Gundersen. Our in the trenches category includes homemakers who have been practicing more than 5 but less than 25 years. They are past the newlywed stage and are working through how to prioritize marriage amidst a houseful of kids, schooling, activities, their husband’s career, and more. Life is busy and demands their constant attention in this stage. Kelly is no exception, but her approach to this busy season is refreshing. Here’s a hint, it requires boundaries based on her family’s values and intentionality to thrive within those boundaries.
