Buzzsprout

A podcast exploring biology, ecology, and introduced and invasive species around the world. We are interested in super neat science about nature, and how humans interact with the nature, wildlife, and the rest of our environment.

We take a serious approach to research, and a less serious approach to the delivery, so we can all have a bit more fun along the way.

In loving memory of Nicholas McCarney.

Um, Could I Get Some Kelp?

Season 3 · Episode 9

vendredi 19 juillet 2024Duration 55:42

Send us a Text Message.

Sea a star, make a wish!

Many of us know how awful heat waves can be (I know I for one have been very glad to have access to AC this summer)... now imagine being underwater where it is even harder, if not impossible, to cool yourself down.

Marine invertebrates face many challenges, and heat is definitely one of them, but could kelp forests potentially help provide some protection for communities of invertebrates (like sea stars for example!) during heat waves?

Join me chatting with MSc (/PhD candidate) Dominique Maucieri about her research into this complex question!

I Hope You Are Doin' Whale

Season 3 · Episode 8

mercredi 3 juillet 2024Duration 58:38

Send us a Text Message.

If you have ever heard whale song before you are likely to agree that it is beautiful, and can be quite powerful. So what if we took these incredible singers (along with dolphins too!) and added our own music to it - all for a greater cause?

In the search of helping people to practice mindfulness, improve mental health, and to raise awareness for the protection of our oceans, Joshua Sam Miller has created Sounds of The Ocean - An artistic exploration of natural sounds, music, and stunning visuals to inspire conservation action on a global scale. Join me chatting with Joshua all about this project and what it can mean for ocean conservation!

And though it is a common pattern, it doesn’t cease to be interesting! Join us today while we take a dive into Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma Sp.). As both an endangered and invasive salamander.
