We talk about Otakon's humble beginnings and history (with some general anime con memories), and what we thought of the con now that it's ever closer to reaching "middle-age". This month’s episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. It's Summertime, so why not kick back with an 80s cyberpunk action buddy-cop movie? That's right, this month, I'm revisiting the Gainax-made 1988 OVA based off of Masamune Shirow's Appleseed! Is this a great Summer popcorn flick, or does it belong at the bottom of the bargain bin? Let's find out together! Stream the episode above or [Direct Download] Relevant links:

Ryan (aka Blacotaku1) started an ambitious project 3 years ago: to scan his entire collection of vintage Japanese Newtype magazines from the 80s to the 90s and share them with other anime fans online via his Tumblr blog, Oldtype/Newtype. Not only that, but to try to share some of the rare old interviews and photos with various creators, artists, and other big industry names that had been lost to the ages. In this episode, I talk to Ryan and find out what got him started on this project, how he got into anime, and what it means to him to be able to share his love of older anime in print media form with the world. Sidenote: For some reason, this episode got cursed with various technical issues, so there’s a few spots where the audio may sound a little wonky and it sounds like we’re talking over each other--which, I assure you, we didn’t do when we were actually talking! So please excuse these tiny hiccups. ^^; Stream the episode above or [Direct Download] You can also now subscribe on itunes & Stitcher! Relevant links:

Returning guest NewtypeLady is back to talk with me about the 1995 smash-hit, Neon Genesis Evangelion--another Gainax series that takes place in the “distant future of 2015″ (and celebrates it’s 20th anniversary this year!) Even with this extra-long episode, we only touch the tip of the iceberg on what makes this series tick & why it’s considered such an important piece of work. iTunes subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! A short, ReView episode this time around! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that time’s gone by and I’m a little older. This time, a title so forgotten that it never even made it onto DVD: the Sanctuary OVA. Stream the episode above or [Direct Download] You can also now subscribe on itunes! Relevant links:

Here's a shorter in-between-longer-episodes ep of The Anime Nostalgia Podcast, in which I answer the "40 Anime Questions" meme that's been floating around Tumblr here and there. I figured this was a fun way for my listeners who don't know me all that well to get a bit of an idea of what kind of stuff I liked, mixed with a little of my first anime titles and personal opinions. Stream the episode above, or [Direct Download] If you're more into podcast episodes where I talk to guests about specific topics, fear not--I have another episode just like that (which I'm editing as we speak!) that will be released before the end of the month. So hopefully this will tide you over until then. (I should note that when I copied down the meme, I apparently got a copy of it where 1 question was accidentally asked twice...it seems to have been revised since then, thankfully. If you want to do the meme yourself, check out the questions here.) As always, feel free to give me your thoughts and comments on this and for future episodes! Thanks for listening!

Gundam has been a staple in anime fans' libraries for generations now. But as time goes by, younger fans might not know much about it, or where to even start when it comes to Gundam's library of titles. Well, if you've never tried to tackle the world of Gundam, you're in luck! Resident Knower-of-all-things-Gundam and friend of mine Newtypelady has kindly offered to help explain some of the basics of the Gundam Universe for people (like me!) who might not know much, and want to know more (or for those who do, a walk down memory lane of all things Gundam, then and now). | The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 03 - ReView: Revolutionary Girl Utena | 11 Aug 2013
Introducing the first in Anime Nostalgia's "ReView" episodes! What is a "ReView" episode, you might ask? Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that time's gone by and I'm a little older. For my first ReView episode, I asked around my circle of friends as to what title they'd be interested in hearing about first, and I was surprised to see that almost all of them wanted Utena! So by popular demand, here it is: Stream the episode above or [Direct Download] Relevant links: Buy Part 1 of Utena The Right Stuf International / Amazon Nozomi's Official Utena Website (with interviews & lots of info!) ReView episodes will be shorter than normal episodes (This one's under 50 mins, as apposed to my Guest/Topic episodes that can go as long as 2 hours!), and will be released here and there, in between Guest/Topic episodes from time to time, just as something different to mix things up a bit! And don't worry--for those of you who prefer my episodes with guests where we talk about topics and such, I'm editing a new one as we speak (this one all about the world of Gundam!), which will be released in the next week or two. This is just to tide you over. ;D As always, feel free to leave me your thoughts and ideas for future episodes (ReView or otherwise!), and thanks for listening!

Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! In February of 2023, we learned that we lost an icon of not just manga and anime, but a pillar of otaku fandom as we know it: Leiji Matsumoto. And so this month, we celebrated him and his beautiful Leijiverse by having a fan-made Memorial Livestream. For those that missed out on it, this is the audio from said livestream, in handy podcast form! The first part of the stream I was joined by Leiji Matsumoto translator and superfan, Zack Davisson, as we give some background on Matsumoto’s live and work. After that, I reached out to the Leijiverse fandom to get audio and written submissions on not only how Matsumoto’s work touched our hearts, but also significantly changed some of our lives. Get those tissues ready, because there’s sure to be some tears shed in this heartfelt, extra-long episode!
Special thanks to everyone who submitted audio & written contributions for this stream! It wouldn’t have been a huge success without all of you. Relevant links:

Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! This month, to celebrate not only the new Urusei Yatsura TV anime and the month of Valentine’s Day, let’s revisit the very first Urusei Yatsura: Only You--the series’ first theatrical film! The whole Tomobiki gang makes the show a lot of fun, but can they satisfyingly fill a nearly 2 hour long movie? Let’s see what’s to love about it in this month’s rewatch! This month, we’re going down the rabbit hole to revisit a lesser known OVA based off a CLAMP title that came out in the 90s: Miyuki-chan in Wonderland. Is it a fun adventure, or should we forget we ever peered into the looking glass? Let’s find out! Stream the episode above or [Direct Download] Relevant links:
