| The Identity Crisis: Letting Go, Finding Purpose, and Redefining Who You Are As Your Teens Grow Up - Trap #10 | Ep. 157 | 31 May 2025 | 00:30:39 | |
There was a moment—standing in my kitchen, alone on a Saturday while my kids were out living their lives—when I asked myself, “Is this it? Who am I now?” In this episode, I’m talking about the identity crisis so many of us face as moms of teens, college students, and young adults. Whether you're in the thick of middle school meltdowns or staring at an empty bedroom, the shift in how you're needed can leave you feeling invisible, untethered, and quietly asking, What’s my purpose now? I’ll share how this trap has followed me through every stage—from folding laundry while my kids chased their dreams, to navigating emotional distance, to standing in the stillness of the empty nest. I’ll also explore why this mindset trap is so deeply rooted in how we’ve been wired to find validation, avoid pain, and define our worth by what we do for others. If you’ve ever felt lost in this season of transition—or wondered how to find your way back to yourself—this episode is for you. You’ll hear my story, some powerful reflections, and the quiet truth that your purpose never left you… you’ve just been looking for it in all the wrong places. Let’s talk about how you move forward—not by reinventing who you are, but by finally deciding for yourself. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | When Being A Good Mom Still Feels Like It's Not Enough | Mindset Trap #5 | Ep. 147 | 22 Mar 2025 | 00:30:46
MINDSET TRAPS OF THE EMPTY NEST - Trap #5 - Perfectionism In this episode, I’m digging into one of the most exhausting and invisible traps so many of us fall into—perfectionism. You might think you're just trying to do your best, but what if that constant pressure to get it all right is actually making motherhood—and life—so much harder than it has to be? I’ll share how perfectionism shows up in ways you might not expect, how it affects your relationship with your teen, and how it keeps you stuck in fear and self-doubt. Most importantly, I’ll show you how to begin letting go of this impossible standard so you can step into more peace, trust, and confidence as both a mom and a woman in your next chapter. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | When the House Gets Quiet — Facing Loneliness and Reclaiming Yourself in the Empty Nest Years | Ep. 57 | 08 Jul 2023 | 00:19:15
This episode came from a quiet moment on a family trip—my first without my boys. As I walked onto the ferry alone, I felt the full weight of what it means to be a mom in the teen and empty nest years. The emotional space once filled with cuddles and chaos is quieter now. And while I cherish the independence my kids are building, I’m also discovering what it means to be truly alone—with my thoughts, my memories, and myself. This episode is for you if:

| What You Really Want — Letting Go of Control, Guilt, and Fear in Parenting Teens | Ep. 56 | 01 Jul 2023 | 00:23:27 | |
What do I really want as a mom? That question sounds simple, but it goes deep. I used to think that if I worked hard enough, tried my best, and followed the rules, I'd raise happy, successful kids and feel fulfilled in motherhood. But the truth is—when my teens struggled, so did I. Their happiness felt like the only measure of my success, and when they were angry, distant, or anxious, I felt powerless and guilty. In this episode, I share how I had to shift my mindset, let go of the illusion of control, and learn how to support my teens from a place of love and calm—not fear and frustration. Whether your child is pulling away, acting out, or dealing with mental health challenges, you're not alone. We’ll talk about how to release the emotional tug-of-war and create boundaries from confidence instead of anxiety. This conversation is for every mom who’s tired of overthinking, carrying the emotional weight of her teen’s choices, and wondering if she’s doing it all wrong. Together, we’ll unpack what we really want—not just for our kids, but for ourselves—and how to move forward with clarity, compassion, and purpose in this messy, beautiful season of motherhood. | Redefining Your Purpose in the Empty Nest — A Mindset Shift for Moms Letting Go | Ep. 55 | 24 Jun 2023 | 00:20:18
As my boys became more independent—first with driver’s licenses, then with dorm move-ins—I began to feel it: the empty spaces in our routine, in the house, and in myself. It wasn’t just the empty nest I was bracing for; it was the quiet erosion of the identity I’d built over years of motherhood. In this episode, I talk about what it really means to redefine your purpose as a mom of teens and young adults. We explore the deep mindset work of letting go—not just of your kids' physical presence, but of the role you’ve held for so long. I unpack why so many of us feel guilt, anxiety, and confusion in this stage, and why we often struggle to figure out what comes next. Together, we’ll explore:
If you're navigating this season of transition and wondering who you are beyond “mom,” this episode will help you answer that question—not by finding something new to do, but by reconnecting with the powerful truth of who you already are. | The Hidden Weight of Motherhood — How Resentment and Guilt Keep Moms Stuck | Ep. 54 | 17 Jun 2023 | 00:24:32
Resentment is one of those emotions we don’t talk about—but most of us moms are carrying it. In this episode, I share how my own emotional habits—like reaching for wine or snacks to take the edge off—have been tied to deeper, uncomfortable feelings I’ve been avoiding. Especially resentment. I open up about what it feels like to do everything for everyone, often without acknowledgment, and the shame that can come from even admitting we feel this way. Whether it's frustration over daily parenting struggles, lack of help at home, or guilt around needing space, this episode is about breaking that silence and letting go of the emotional weight we carry. We’ll explore:
If you’ve ever felt dismissed, overburdened, or ashamed for wanting more—even just a break—this conversation will help you feel seen and give you practical steps to move forward with compassion and clarity. When your teen or young adult returns home—whether for the summer, after graduation, or because life didn’t go as planned—it’s a mix of joy, tension, and everything in between. I created this episode for the moms who are navigating this tricky transition, where parenting shifts from daily control to emotional guidance, and boundaries feel harder than ever to define. Graduation isn’t just a milestone for our kids—it’s a turning point for us as moms. In this deeply personal episode, I share what it feels like to stand on the brink of my son’s high school graduation and all the emotions that come with it—nostalgia, fear, regret, and love. Everyone is WORTHY. Period. Everyone is valuable. Period. And everyone deserves to have support when they need it. In this episode, I explore the ways life coaching and therapy can help us find peace and our own truth. Your well-being is priceless. And your life is waiting for you to live it. | For Better or for Worse | Ep. 47 | 30 Apr 2023 | 00:21:14
Any long-term partnership, particularly ones that involves co-parenting children, experiences better and worse, probably richer and poorer, and most definitely sickness and health. | People Pleasing with My Kids - Spring Break Edition | Ep. 42 | 26 Mar 2023 | 00:22:06
They say people pleasing behavior often stems from instability in a relationship. And as our kids grow up and seek independence, instability seems inevitable. But what hasn't changed is that we want our kids to be happy, so we do everything in our power to try to make our kids happy....only, it doesn't seem to work a lot of the time. So the question for us as moms is: do we keep putting our own happiness on hold until our kids perform their happiness so that we can give ourselves permission to be happy? 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | Trying To Fix Everything As a Mom? The Illusion of Control | Mindset Trap #4 | Ep. 145 | 08 Mar 2025 | 00:32:17
MINDSET TRAPS OF THE EMPTY NEST - Trap #4 - Illusion of Control Have you ever found yourself checking your kid, reminding them (again) about their responsibilities, or feeling that tight grip of anxiety when they don’t do what you ask or hope they'll do? If so, you’re not alone. In this episode of The Almost Empty Nest Podcast, I dive into one of the biggest mindset traps we face as moms of teens—the illusion of control. For years, we’ve shaped our children’s lives, guiding them, protecting them, ensuring their happiness. But as they step into independence, we find ourselves holding on tighter, convinced that if we just say or do the right thing, we can keep them safe, successful, and happy. The truth? We were never in control to begin with. And the more we try, the more frustrated, exhausted, and disconnected we feel. In this episode, I’ll show you why letting go doesn’t mean giving up—it means finding peace, trust, and a whole new way to connect with your big kid. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | Is it Possible to Feel Unconditional Love? | Ep. 37 | 19 Feb 2023 | 00:23:44
Feeling unconditional love--it's easier said than done. We tend to think about loving our children unconditionally...but if we're honest with ourselves, while we know in our hearts we will always love our children, sometimes our expectations of our children lead us to show up in ways that might make our children question whether, in fact, our love is conditional. So if it's hard to deliver on unconditional love for our kids, it seems impossible to maintain unconditional love--love without expectation--for our partners...and ourselves. Join me in exploring the concept of unconditional love--and how you can have it without dropping your expectations. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | Teen Love | Ep. 36 | 12 Feb 2023 | 00:23:23
Join me in this episode as I explore a topic we're often not comfortable talking about. The thought of our kids finding love is lovely...until it isn't. Heartache. Heartbreak. Sex. Safety. Consequences. So much about our teen's love life can bring up really uncomfortable feelings for us as moms. The anxiety and fears about the worse case scenarios. The frustration that our kids may not be listening to us. But it's interesting to consider that we can often spend so much time worrying about our kid's relationships, that we lose sight of our own relationship with them, and how we want to show up as moms. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | Letting Go So Your Child Can Fly | Ep. 24 | 05 Sep 2022 | 00:23:16
As our kids become young adults, there is so much new territory for US as parents to navigate. Where is the rule book? Please, someone give me a strategy that works without fail. Because look, we’re all human. And even experts must struggle in the relationships they have with their own teens and young adults. Because it’s one thing to execute a strategy when there’s no emotion. When you don’t have skin in the game. But these are our kids. Our life’s work. The perceived stakes of “doing it wrong” seem so high. So, we worry. We try to control. We judge... We check up on them...all in the name of trying to protect them. To help them be safe, happy and successful. This is not a podcast about parenting, but rather about our own mindset as it relates to our responsibility to parent. How can we let go so our child can fly? 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? When it comes to our children...the people we love...we often can’t help ourselves but think endlessly of all of the terrible things that might happen. The What Ifs. So we imagine these dangers and bring the PAIN of that projected danger into our present moment. | Finding Love | Ep. 18 | 20 Jun 2022 | 00:27:40
Whether you are already in a relationship, wondering whether you should stay in a relationship, or looking for love…this one’s for you. How do you find love? Here's the thing about love…we’re frequently looking for somebody else to create the feeling of love for us. But if somebody else is responsible for how I feel, that’s a pretty helpless and powerless place to be. And I think that’s why love can be so painful so much of the time. Because if we don’t receive love in the way we want to receive it, or if somebody does things that don’t align with what we would interpret as loving, then WE don’t get to feel any love. In this episode we explore the experience of love...what it feels like, what it creates us....and how we can create more of it in our lives...on our terms. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? MINDSET TRAPS OF THE EMPTY NEST - Trap #3 - Comparison Trap Have you ever found yourself scrolling through social media, seeing another mom’s perfectly happy family vacation, and feeling that pang of “Why can’t I have that?” Or maybe you’ve heard about another teen’s big achievement and suddenly questioned whether you’ve done enough for your own child? In this episode of The Almost Empty Nest Podcast, I dive into the comparison trap—one of the sneakiest mindset traps that keeps us feeling inadequate and anxious. I’ll unpack why our brains are wired to compare, how it distorts our sense of worth, and most importantly, how to break free from this cycle so you can step into confidence, peace, and the truth that you are already enough. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | Filling the Empty Nest | Ep. 17 | 13 Jun 2022 | 00:29:19
The empty nest. Think about the visual image of what is implied by the phrase, the "empty nest." The nest is a home, and its purpose is to keep eggs and baby birds safe until they are ready to fly off on their own. But what happens then? After the adorable baby birds grow up and leave the nest? In my head, I conjure up an image of a literal empty nest. Barren cold. Lonely. Without purpose. Empty. Now, not all of us look at the empty nest in such a negative light. But even the concept of the empty nest tends to focus us more of the loss of our children and purpose with kids in the home than on the opportunity of this new stage in our life. In this episode we explore the range of emotions that we might experience as we face the empty nest and how we can not only find compassion for ourselves as we grapple with challenging emotions, but also how we can begin to fill the nest in a way that allows us to embrace this next chapter of our lives....and even to create a new, exciting and beautiful purpose, independent from our children. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | When Your Best Isn't Good Enough | Ep. 16 | 02 Jun 2022 | 00:23:00
Have you ever found yourself saying, “I am literally doing the best I can….and it’s not enough.” We are trying our best. We have the best intentions. We think we have done everything that we could have done. And yet…things go wrong. Our kids get into trouble. People get angry at us. We disappoint ourselves... In this episode we explore feelings of powerlessness related to things that have happened in the past that make us feel frustrated, guilty, and even ashamed. These emotions can feel overwhelming and leave us feeling powerless because we can’t change the past or change people’s minds right away…so we are powerless to feel better. When things go wrong, you get to decide what you want to make them mean. You can't change the past but beating yourself up about it doesn’t move you forward. In every moment you have an opportunity to ask yourself…. now what? What’s done is done…. I can’t change the past, I can’t change how other people think or what they do….but I CAN decide how I want to show up in the present moment. Maybe after listening you can decide, for yourself…. that all of it….is good enough. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper? | Powerlessness. When Your Child Pulls Away. | Ep. 15 | 15 May 2022 | 00:22:45
As we watch our children grow up, we experience so many beautiful emotions. But we can also experience a wide range of challenging emotions—like worry, fear, anxiety, and frustration. When we worry or feel fear, we are typically imagining a negative future outcome that we want to avoid. And when we feel frustration—we are typically looking at a situation and thinking of all of the ways it should be different. And when we feel this way, we try to control our children. We try to convince them they’re wrong. That they need to try a little harder. That they need to listen to our advice. But we rarely win. And we are left feeling powerless. And in pain. Constantly worried. We are literally powerless to end our own pain because we are projecting their pain in the future. It’s insanity, but we do it to ourselves time and time again. The only way to feel better is to change them—but we can’t change them, so we don’t feel better. In this episode, we explore how to find the power to feel better without having to change our children. 🎯 Want to take this work deeper?
