How to Live Into Your Full Potential with Jon Acuff11 Sep 202300:53:26

In a recent survey, 3,000 people were asked, “Do you feel like you are living up to your full potential?” I was shocked to find out that 96% of them said no! How did we get here, and how can we change that?

My friend Jon Acuff and I had a great conversation all about our potential: what “potential” refers to, how we can reach it, and some pitfalls to avoid along the way.

If you want to close the gap between your dreams and your reality without causing yourself to burn out in the process, this conversation is for you!!

Jon is one of INC’s Top 100 Leadership Speakers and the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, including his most recent, All It Takes Is a Goal: The 3-Step Plan to Ditch Regret and Tap Into Your Massive Potential. He’s a husband and dad to two teenage girls, living outside Nashville.

Lean in and listen as Jon and I discuss:

  • How to get around the massive barrier between you and what you want to do? (Jon calls this barrier “the vision wall”)

  • The difference between a high performer and a high achiever

  • A fun tool that creates gratitude, teaches the superpower of self-awareness and will help you be present

  • The only reason people leave their comfort zones

  • The connection between personal responsibility and potential

Jon’s last visit to the show was equally amazing, especially for parents of teens. The things we believed as teenagers can be so impactful. It is so encouraging to think about how the teens in our lives can learn to create new thoughts that lead to actions and even better results. Be sure to listen in to find out how!

Favorite quotes:

  • “You should dream but when your dream is divorced from reality it doesn’t end in a healthy marriage.”
  • “Excellence is boring.”
  • “Potential is the gap between your vision and your reality.”
  • “You're the CEO of your actions, not the CEO of your outcomes. Focus on those actions.”
  • “The Best Moments list starts to teach you about what you want in the future. The list reflects your past, informs your present, and prepares your future.”
  • “The only reason people leave the comfort zone is because what’s on the outside is better than what’s on the inside.”
  • “The harder the challenge, the kinder the words.”

Coaching this week:

  1. Automatic thoughts that can stop you from starting a business and how to battle them. (45:14)

How to Reduce Anxiety as a Mom with Sissy Goff04 Sep 202300:47:04

Hey friend! Worry seems to be a routine part of life these days. As parents, it feels like we worry non-stop even though we don’t want our kids to worry. Is it even possible to reduce that anxiety?

My friend Sissy Goff has written amazing resources on raising worry-free kids, but her newest book, The Worry-Free Parent: Living in Confidence So Your Kids Can Too, is a resource for grown-ups.

What we do with our worry as parents impacts our kids more than we know, and that’s why Sissy and I went all in, both in this conversation and in our recent books. This conversation is too important not to!

Sissy is the author of multiple books and co-host of The Raising Boys and Girls podcast. She is a counselor who works with kids and their families in Nashville.

Join Sissy and I as we talk about:

  • Why this was the right book for Sissy to write, both as an author and as a therapist

  • Best practices you can use if you find yourself struggling with anxiety, especially as a mom

  • Five ways parents tend to respond to anxiety in our kids

  • One common denominator Sissy sees in people of all ages who deal with anxiety

  • How being hard on ourselves impacts our kids

  • Sissy’s advice for parents of perfectionists

And after living through a pandemic, we are all uncertain, anxious and even a little bit cranky about things going back to normal. As adults, we have a lifetime of practice building coping strategies that work for our individual personalities and lifestyles. But what about our kids?  Don’t miss our previous conversation about the state of our kids in a post-pandemic world and how we can better support them.

Favorite quotes:

  • “Anxious parents raise anxious children.”
  • “Anxiety spreads by the way we respond.”
  • “Be present in the moment rather than focused on the only time you have left.”
  • “Right now even more concerning is that parents feel like failures more than ever before.”
  • “The way we  talk to ourselves is going to spill over onto others.”
  • “You need to fail in front of your kids and laugh at yourself when you do it.”

Hey hey! We’ve all had times when we wanted to quit, but why do some people lean in and stick with it when others check out? The answer to that question may surprise you!

My friend Bianca Juarez Olthoff wrote the book on grit and resilience, and we had a fantastic conversation about just that. What she learned while writing this book is both fascinating and encouraging, and I can’t wait for you to hear it!

Bianca is a Bible teacher, host of the “We’re Going There” podcast, and author of three books, including her newest, Grit Don’t Quit: Developing Resilience and Faith When Giving Up Isn’t an Option. She is passionate about helping people live counter-culturally and significantly.

Bianca and I don’t hold back today!

  • 3 people you should meet with before you decide to quit anything

  • What kills our grit (and how to protect it)

  • Why our thought lives matter more than we know

  • And don't miss Bianca's challenge results in the P. S. at the end of the show notes!

Favorite quotes:

  • “The best things in life will cost you the most and take you the longest.”
  • “Keep going! Just because it is hard doesn’t mean you're not supposed to do it. Good things are hard.”
  • “There are three key elements to people who are resilient and they are learnable and actionable.”
  • “Can you find a purpose for this season and make the most of it? Those are the people that are the grittiest and successful.”
  • “Our mind matters so let’s make sure we are mindful of what we are thinking.”
  • "Bet on yourself and invest in yourself. It is the one investment that is going to pay you back 100 times and you can’t lose."

How to Discover the Secret Art of Confident Motherhood14 Aug 202300:45:41

Hey hey! Have you lost yourself in the demands of motherhood? Have you wondered if it’s possible to care for yourself well in the midst of a full life?

Today’s show is a special one, featuring the first two chapters of my newest book, Remaining You While Raising Them: The Secret Art of Confident Motherhood.

This is not a parenting book about your children- those books are already out there! This is a motherhood book, and it’s about you.

I wrote Remaining You While Raising Them to help women find freedom from the heavy weight of modern motherhood. I can’t give you a step-by-step plan to raise perfect children (an impossible dream!), but I can help you thrive as a happier, healthier mom.

Listen in on these audio chapters to hear:

  • One thing that bonds all moms together (besides our fierce love for our children)

  • Personal stories from my own motherhood journey with five sons

  • The shocking truth about the greatest gift we can give our kids

  • Why motherhood is not just about what you do, but who you are (and what your kids will remember)

Favorite quotes:

  • “I had no idea motherhood would be my greatest joy and also the hardest thing I would ever do. I wasn’t prepared for how motherhood would change my life, and I certainly wasn’t prepared for how it would change me.”
  • “Motherhood is harder, messier, crazier, and more amazing than anything we could have imagined.”
  • “Modern motherhood may be broken, but we don’t have to let it break us anymore.”
  • “Being the best mother you can be starts with learning to mother yourself.”
  • “The greatest gift I can give my kids is to be an emotionally healthy mom and to model the way for them.”
  • “A mother’s emotional health (her spiritual, mental, and relational health) is the most important legacy she can give her children.”
  • “Motherhood isn’t about what you do, it’s about who you are.”

How to Overcome Mom Guilt and Prioritize Self-Care07 Aug 202300:56:08

Tomorrow is the big day! My newest book, Remaining You While Raising Them, releases into the world, and I can’t wait for it to be in your hands!

To celebrate, my friend Phoebe Barron is here to turn the tables and interview me!

Phoebe is the mental health consultant on Remaining You While Raising Them. She is a licensed counselor and counseling professor. She speaks to churches about emotional health and lives in Oklahoma with her husband, three kids, and fluffy golden doodle.

I’m thrilled for you to hear some of her perspectives firsthand (you know, I couldn’t resist sneaking in a few questions of my own!).

Join Phoebe and I as we discuss:

  • The single biggest driver of mom guilt (secret: it’s not your mom or your MIL)

  • Why having a mother who models caring for herself and her needs is so important to our daughters (and our sons!)

  • One magic question that keeps “taking care of mom” from becoming just another thing on your to-do list

  • How trusting your gut and doing what’s best for your family are backed by research

  • My ultimate goal for writing THIS book

Favorite quotes:

  • “When I asked about mom guilt almost all women said they had mom guilt but the single biggest driver was social media.”
  • “The most important thing we can do to be good moms is to make sure that we are as emotionally healthy as possible.”
  • “Taking care of ourselves emotionally is the most selfless thing we can do for our families.”
  • “Getting in the habit of saying what do I need right now is the ultimate self-care.”
  • “There are a few ways of really parenting up. There are a ton of ways of getting it good enough and there are no ways of getting it perfect.”
  • “Our job is to model health to our children, discipline our children, and give them discipline but most of all to love our children. If we do those things our kids are going to be just fine.”

How to persevere with Natalie Runion03 Jul 202300:33:31

Hey friend! Have you ever been tempted to throw in the towel and walk away from your dreams or maybe even your calling? Our guest today for Smart Girl Summer gets it (and so do I!).

As a preacher’s kid who watched her family experience deep church hurt, Natalie Runion understands the desire to walk away. Even as an adult on the other side of that, working as a worship leader and songwriter, she wrestled with wanting to quit.

Today, Natalie is still a worship leader and songwriter. She’s also a wife, a mom, a sought-after speaker, and a first-time author. Her season of wanting to walk away became the foundation for her debut book, Raised to Stay: Persevering in Ministry When You Have a Million Reasons to Walk Away.

Lean in and listen as Natalie and I talk about:

  • How she went from middle school gym teacher to where she is today

  • Why abiding in Christ is central to our perseverance

  • “We are called to abide in Christ and when we abide in him even on the days we want to quit, he will still produce good fruit through us.”

How to Strengthen Your Marriage with the Enneagram with Jackie Brewster15 May 202300:42:07

Hey friend!

We’re back again for Part 2 of our Enneagram series! We talk a lot around here about the importance of self-awareness. But how does self-awareness help us understand the people we have relationships with? Can a self-awareness tool like the Enneagram really impact our marriages for the better?

My friend Jackie Brewster is here to help us make that connection between self-awareness and understanding our partner!

Jackie is a certified enneagram coach who uses the Enneagram to help individuals, couples, and teams get to know themselves better so they can love and serve others well. Her new book, The Enneagram, and Your Marriage: A 7-Week Guide to Better Understanding and Loving Your Spouse will help you apply this tool to the most important relationship in your life: your marriage.

Join in as Jackie and I discuss:

  • What to do if you love the Enneagram but your spouse does not

  • That one thing that really communicates love to your spouse, based on their Enneagram type

  • How defense mechanisms serve us, and how to identify them by type

  • Why active listening is crucial for productive conversations (and what “active listening” actually means)

Jackie Brewster is a certified Enneagram coach and author of The Enneagram and Your Marriage: A 7-Week Guide to Better Understanding and Loving Your Spouse.  Jackie and her husband, Stephen, have four children and live in Franklin, Tennessee.

Favorite quotes:

  • “Intimate relationships see a different side of us but our heart longings are the same whether it is an intimate partner or really good friendships.”
  • “Enneagrams 2, 7, and 9 are in this positive outlook group. They try to minimize the tension, chaos, and confusion.”
  • “Then you have got the Enneagrams 1’s, 3’s, and 5’s, and they are in the confidency group. They would prefer to deal with situations, conflict, and disappointment but also just situations from a more logical standpoint.”
  • “The Enneagram numbers 4, 6, and 8, they are in this more reactive group. They have to deal with their emotions before they can move on.”
  • “Active listening is such a gift that you can give to another person.”
  • “Information is not transformation until you activate it.”

How to Use the Enneagram to Boost Success with Scott Allender08 May 202300:36:04

Did you know only around 15% of people experience true self-awareness? Even more surprising, in the same study, researchers found that the more self-aware someone thinks they are, the opposite is likely to be true!

When Scott Allender shared this info with me in a recent conversation, I was floored! I just had to hear more about how self-awareness relates to our emotional health and how both of those pieces relate to success.

In his new book, The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success, Scott uses one of my favorite tools, the Enneagram, to help you move towards emotional health in a way that makes sense for your personality and sets you up for success.

Listen in as Scott and I talk about:

  • Why your emotional intelligence (EQ) is more important than your IQ when it comes to success

  • How the tools provided in the enneagram help us get back to who we are made to be

  • What it looks like for each Enneagram type to be functioning at a high level of self-awareness (and what it looks like when we’re not self-aware!)

  • The role our spiritual life plays in our emotional intelligence

Scott Allender is the co-host of The Evolving Leader podcast and author of The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success.  Scott is an expert in global leadership who regularly teaches enneagram workshops and lives in Nashville.

Favorite quotes:

  • “Only 13-15% of people are truly self aware and the more self aware somebody thinks they are the opposite is likely to be true.”
  • “Your IQ might get you in the door. Your EQ is going to determine whether or not you stay inside the room or get invited back. Our EQ is our IQ at its testing point”
  • “Until we do the work of cultivating this level of awareness we are often operating on autopilot.”
  • “The studies say that more than 70% of our success is directly attributed to emotional intelligence.”
  • “What is common to all types is really getting connected to the body, heart, and head.”

The Truth About What Makes Life Great09 Jan 202500:16:34

Let’s talk about something big today. What does it mean to live a good life? Is it about success, wealth, and finally figuring out how to fold a fitted sheet without losing your sanity?

Today, we’re diving into lessons from the longest-running scientific study on happiness ever conducted—the Harvard Study of Adult Development. This study has been running for a whopping 86 years, tracking people’s lives in incredible detail.

Timestamps:

(01:50) - What Does Living a Good Life Really Look Like?

(03:49) - Building the Foundation for a Good Life

Recommendations:

I’ll share what I just learned after 15 years - Voice dictation on a Mac Book = double click the function (FN) key in the bottom left corner. I may be the last one to learn this!

Let’s talk about how to get hormone replacement therapy. I used online MidiHealth until I discussed it with my gynecologist, who agreed to write the script. Not all insurance companies will cover MidiHealth. The book Estrogen Matters is a great resource for HRT information.

How to Know What God Wants For You with Heather MacFadyen24 Apr 202300:48:47

What if I told you that shrinking back when you’re called to something big is not a display of humility? It is so ingrained in us, especially as women, to think of ourselves as less-than in an effort to be humble. But what if it’s actually pride that makes us play small?

This idea of understanding true humility was a big focus for me when I wrote Standing Strong, and I couldn’t wait to have a conversation with my friend Heather about it!

Heather MacFadyen is the one to talk about this with because she shares such good insight on this very thing in her new book, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify and Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space.

And we’re not holding back on this one! Join us as we talk about:

  • Four boundary lines that will help you identify the core of the assignments God has for you in this season

  • How to use those boundary lines as a decision-making tool

  • Ways to process rejection in a way that invites God into it

  • The impact of social media on mom guilt and shame, and why we need an inner circle

  • How to listen to God as an important first step in everything you do (and Heather’s example of what that process looks like for her!)

Each time Heather visits the show she brings truth and wisdom. You can listen to her last visit where where she shares about the dangers of comparison. Her relatable stories remind moms they are never alone in the pursuit of becoming the best mom they can be.

Heather MacFadyen is the host of the Don’t Mom Alone podcast, a speaker, and the author of two books, including her latest, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify and Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space.  Heather lives with her husband and their four sons in Dallas, TX.

Favorite quotes:

  • “You don’t have to hustle. You can trust that God is outside your space hustling on your behalf.”
  • “Nothing new is under the sun. It is just are we doing it. Are we inviting God into our decisions and are we looking for his invitations for what he is doing?”
  • “God speaks through the Holy Spirit in us and through His word and we can know if it is him if it resonates with the truth of who he has always been and what is written.”
  • “Your current living is what dictates your future moments so how are you spending that time.”
  • “When we experience God it ignites the Spirit in us and we can hear those promptings and invitations.”
  • “If you have never sat and listened to God’s voice, what he thinks about you, and what he is inviting you into, that would be a great first step.”

How to Live Unafraid of the Future with Lisa Whittle17 Apr 202300:40:21

Hey friend! We all want to live without fear of the future, for ourselves and for our children. But, in today’s world, it’s easy to look around and wonder if it’s even possible. There’s just so many things outside of our control and how do we cope with them, much less live without fear.

Today, my friend Lisa Whittle joins me on the show to talk about just that. We walk through those challenging questions we’ve all had about fear, pain and the future and what it means to trust God rather than give into fear.

Lisa knows what she’s talking about, too! She is a best-selling author and has written a new book called God Knows, all about how those two little words can change our lives if we will let them.

Join us as we talk about:

  • How to lean into the comfort that God knows all and is in control, even (and maybe especially) in seasons of pain

  • Why believing God knows can bring peace to motherhood

  • The three reasons people stop dreaming (plus, how dreaming is a form of self-care!)

  • An analogy that will change how you see boundaries and letting people into your inner circle

Once you hear this conversation, you’ll want to check out Lisa’s last visit to the show where we shared practical tips as you consider ways to move forward in strength. These conversations about dreams and goals will change your life.

Lisa Whittle is a Bible teacher, speaker, and host of the Jesus Over Everything podcast. She is the author of nine books, including her latest, God Knows: When Your Worries and Whys Need More Than Temporary Relief. Lisa and her husband, Scott, have three children and live in Charlotte, NC.

Favorite quotes:

  • “It is hard to rest and rely on God for your pain relief but what choice do you have?”
  • “When we actually get to know who God is and understand the vastness of what it means God knows. It shifts something within us.”
  • “Dreaming is self-care.”
  • “If you are a believer in Jesus Christ you definitely want to root your own life in him so as you root yourself in him your dreams come in alignment.”
  • “When we become committed to our boundaries we only have to verbalize them 10% of the time.”
  • “Choose your life travelers wisely.”

How to Build Great Friendships with Laura Tremaine10 Apr 202300:43:21

Hey hey! Friendship is something we all want and need. While it seems simple on the surface, it can feel so complicated. How do we make friends as adults? If I don’t have deep heart-to-hearts with someone in my life, are we still friends? What about neighbors, co-workers, and people I see casually or in passing each week? Do they count as great friends?

I invited one of my friends to help me sort all that out! Laura Tremaine is a podcaster, speaker, and author of two books. Her newest book, The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, is a great resource to help us reframe how we think about friendship.

Listen in on this conversation as Laura and I talk about:

  • Giving ourselves permission to not go deep with every friend

  • Why we should be lavish with encouragement, including our likes on social media

  • The importance of having different kinds of friends and the roles each can play in your life

  • Holding space for friendship break-ups and how to move past them

Y’all, I’m so happy to have Laura back on the show today. You can check out her previous show here. We talked about the tools we need to not only start important conversations with our people but continue to be vulnerable and reconnect even when it feels hard.

Laura Tremaine hosts the 10 Things to Tell You podcast and author of two books, including her most recent, The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs. Laura and her husband, Jeff, have two children and live in Los Angeles, California.

Favorite quotes:

~ “We have so many ideas about what women friendship should be.”

~ “When we withhold our likes and comments it hurts us. Withholding ourselves can be toxic to friendship.”

~“When friendships end, that can be so devastating. Often if you have gone through that it affects the relationships that follow.”

~ “The ten friends are over your life. Some of the seats are meant to be that over the course of your life you are meant to have these people that will be good guides for you.”

~ “Look around at who is filling what space in their life and who they are to others. It elevates all of our roles to one another.”

How to Transform Your Relationships with Three Little Words with Mark Batterson03 Apr 202300:43:00

Hey hey! We all want to live and work in happy, healthy spaces, but how do we create them? How do we build a culture where people enjoy being together and working together?

Those are big questions, but what if I told you it all starts with three little words we all learned as kids?

I chat with pastor and author Mark Batterson about these concepts from his new book, Please, Sorry, Thanks: The Three Words That Change Everything. Mark and I talk about how those words- please, sorry, thanks- set the tone in the places we lead.

Join in on this conversation as we discuss:

  • What Mark calls “the crown jewel” of emotional intelligence

  • Why vulnerability is so critical, especially for leaders

  • One of the hardest lessons Mark learned in leadership

  • Two rules of life for leaders that will change how you see people

  • How gratitude can change your life, and why it is so vital for your soul

Mark blesses us with wisdom every time he visits. Last year, Mark shared how we  have to 3-M our habits. We have to make them measurable, we have to make them meaningful, and we have to make them maintainable. Catch that episode here!

Mark Batterson serves as lead pastor of National Community Church and is the author of over 20 books, including his latest, Please, Sorry, Thanks: The Three Words That Change Everything. Mark and his wife, Lora, have three children and live in Washington, D.C.

Favorite quotes:

~~“When it comes to creating culture or a happy healthy family system or just a place you want to work, those cultures are really good at please, sorry, and thanks.”

~~“Nothing opens doors like a please. Nothing mends fences like a sorry. Nothing builds bridges like a thanks. More than words, they have to become a lifestyle.”

How to Nourish Your Soul with Amy Seiffert27 Mar 202300:43:36

Hey friend! Is it hard to put down your phone, even when you realize you’re numbing out? Is distraction really a bad thing? And what can we do to get back on track after it’s gone too far?

Today’s episode is a great conversation with author Amy Seiffert about all the things we consume that are filling our minds but starving our souls. Amy and I get super practical in our discussion on how we can replace spiritual junk food with things that will nourish the center of who we are.

Listen in as we talk about:

  • Two things we tend to think of as helpful that can actually do more harm than good

  • Three practices you can start incorporating this week to care for your soul

  • How small, simple shifts can have a game-changing impact on our lives

  • Why Sabbath rest is so important and why there are fewer (and better!) rules around Sabbath than you may think

  • The crucial role of community in our lives, why women often push it to the back burner, and the power of encouragement

Amy Seiffert is a speaker and author of two books, including her latest, Starved: Why We Need a Spiritual Diet Change to Move Us from Tired, Anxious, and Overwhelmed to Fulfilled, Whole, and Free. Amy lives with her husband and their three children in Ohio.

Favorite quotes:

~“I will be consuming and taking in various things but it is starving my soul. We need a spiritual diet change.”

~“How often because of the noise and the distractions, we can’t even hear what God might be saying.”

~“Start with silence and put the phone down. Practice looking outside and sitting there and not producing or pushing just letting yourself be loved.”

~“What would it look like to take a whole day and everyone you encounter, you practice saying to yourself, “I see an image bearer.” You begin to restore dignity, value, and worth to every person in front of you.”

~“It is a small shift but that very small shift is going to have a phenomenal impact on our spiritual health, emotional health, and mental health.”

~“What would it look like every time we meet to think in your brain when I show up part of my job in our community is to encourage?”

How to Practice Compassion with Aundi Kolber20 Mar 202300:48:35

Hey friend! Does it ever feel like you’re living in survival mode? You know that feeling where you find yourself constantly saying, “if I can just get through one more day, things will be better”? I know I have!

But what does it really take to move out of survival mode? How do we find a place a safety and compassion for ourselves (and others) as we process and move past what we’ve been through?

Trauma-informed therapist Aundi Kolber joins me on the show today to tackle those questions and more!

Aundi is a licensed professional counselor, and while we can’t all be her clients, we can all access the wisdom she shares in her two books, Try Softer and Strong Like Water.

This is a rich conversation about emotional health, and I’m so excited to share it with you.

Join in as we talk about:

  • How the last three years have affected all of us (and why it makes sense if you’re not “over it”)

  • Steps we can take to build safety in ourselves, with each other, and in our spaces like churches and schools

  • The surprising way compassion impacts our nervous system

  • The different styles of attachment, and why “good enough” parenting really is good enough

Aundi Kolber is a licensed professional counselor and author of two books, including her most recent, Strong Like Water: Finding the Freedom, Safety, and Compassion to Move through Hard Things–and Experience True Flourishing. Aundi lives with her family in Castle Rock, CO.

Favorite quotes:

~“Trauma is anything that overwhelms our nervous system's capacity to cope.”

~“How we experience is something at least as important as the event itself.”

~“Getting yourself outside is a great place to do grounding. Nature is so soothing to us and really regulating to our nervous system.”

~“We are designed for more. Both our fierceness and softness are God-given.”

~“Our relationship with ourselves is influenced by our attachment style.”

~“Secure relationships have an internal sense of predictability that when you have needs others around who care for you will do their best to meet their needs to the extent they are able.”

How to Heal From the Inside Out with Debra Fileta06 Mar 202300:32:59

Hey friend! Our emotional health is crucial to our well-being, but sometimes it’s hard to know exactly how to get there or even what to do. What does it look like for us to move toward healing from the inside out?

I invited my friend Debra Fileta on the show to walk us through those questions and talk about the practical side of emotional health. Debra is a licensed professional counselor and has written a new book called RESET, which is all about healing from the inside out.

Listen in as we talk about:

  • Why self-care really is soul care (and not made up or selfish!)

  • What triggers can tell us and how we can welcome them instead of avoid them

  • How children learn about emotional health

  • One exercise you can do in the next 24 hours to start to identify your thought patterns

Debra Fileta is a licensed professional counselor, speaker, and host of the Love + Relationships podcast. She is the author of six books, including her latest, RESET: Powerful Habits to Own Your Thoughts, Understand Your Feelings, and Change Your Life. Debra and her husband, John, live with their four children in Lancaster, PA.

Favorite quotes:

~~“Just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it never will. Your mindset is 90% of the battle.”

~~“Our thoughts lead to our feelings which then lead to our behaviors. So when you are thinking negative thoughts and are hopeless, the truth is your life is going to follow suit.”

~~“It is hard work to get healthy, but it is harder work to stay unhealthy.”

~~“We need to understand the underlying thoughts that are leading to the underlying feelings that are impacting our behavior. We can't just expect to change from the external.”

~~The spirit can give us what we need to not continue to do things in an unhealthy way and live an abundant life the way Jesus calls us to here and now.”

How to Build Resilient Faith in your Children with David Kinnaman27 Feb 202300:48:30

Hey friend! Have you seen so many people- on social media, in your own life, or both- walking through deconstructing their faith? Why is that happening? Is there anything we can do to help our kids build a faith they won’t have to tear down?

I brought in a friend to talk through these things with me. David Kinnaman, the CEO of the leading research company, Barna Group, did years of research to try to answer those questions, and he’s here to share some of his insights with us.

David spent many years researching why people leave the Church, and then he and his team asked, “What can we learn from those who stay?” The results were fascinating!

Listen in as David and I talk about:

  • 5 practices of young people who have a resilient faith

  • What the story of Daniel in Scripture teaches us as we navigate a digital world

  • Why is oversimplification an enemy of faith?

  • One profound question we have to ask ourselves as Christian parents raising children of faith

  • The importance of work and how our work and faith are connected.

David Kinnaman is the CEO of Barna Group and author of multiple bestselling books, including Faith for Exiles: 5 Ways for a New Generation to Follow Jesus in a Digital Babylon. David has three children and lives in Fort Worth, Texas.

Favorite quotes:

~“Things have sped up so much that the ability of our families and churches to stay up with what it means to live a fully human and fully Christian life is really changing.”

~“Being ready and prepared and having deep roots into what God says about us, those are the things that are most important.”

~“We’re doing dial-up ministry in a WiFi world.”

~“Young people really want to learn and I think a lot of churches do a disservice by oversimplifying the message of the Christianity.”

~“We have a more American vision of what it means to be a young adult than we have a Christian vision of what it means to be a young adult.”

~“Let’s give away the fear and instead focus on what God has for us.”

Why Your Story Matters with Beth Moore21 Feb 202300:46:19

Hey hey! I’m so glad you’re here, friend. I’m delighted to have Beth Moore with me today, as we discuss mental illness–a tender topic that many of us have experienced either ourselves or alongside someone we love.

In this fantastic conversation, Beth and I talk about the stories she shares in her new memoir, All My Knotted-Up Life, many of which she’s sharing publicly for the first time.

Join Beth and I as we unpack:

  • The prevalence of mental illness, how it affects people we love, and why it is worth it to Beth and her family to share their story.

  • What she would say to the woman who struggles with the calling on her life and the reasons she can’t or shouldn’t do it.

  • Why  authenticity is so important in our daily lives.

  • The most tender part of the audiobook for Beth to record.

Talking with Beth is always a blessing. On her last visit to the show, she shared how to know if you are actually called or if it’s your own desires. And why I almost killed a man on Mount Olympus in her honor. You can catch that episode here.

Beth Moore is the founder and visionary of Living Proof Ministries, an international Bible teacher, and bestselling author of numerous Bible studies and books. Her newest book, a memoir titled All My Knotted-Up Life, is a must-read for anyone who needs to be encouraged by a woman’s resilience and God’s faithfulness. In celebration of Valentine’s Day tomorrow, that’s exactly what we’re doing today!

I have pulled together some of my favorite marriage advice we’ve gotten here on the show over the last year to give you the best of love.

No marriage is perfect, but these tips will help you build that connection and strengthen the most important relationship in your life.

Listen in as we talk about :

How We Relate to God, Ourselves, and Others with Jesse Eubanks09 Jan 202300:36:25

Welcome back, friends!

I can’t wait for you to listen to today’s conversation with Enneagram coach and podcast host Jesse Eubanks as we discuss his soon-to-released book, How We Relate: Understanding God, Yourself, and Others through the Enneagram.

Ok, so I’m going to come right out and say it… It’s very intriguing to consider the Enneagram alongside our relationship with God, isn’t it?!

Jesse and I discuss so much in this one, including ways to experience more meaningful relationships with God, others, and ourselves. The value of understanding how we approach our relationships is the same way we approach our relationship with God as well.

Jesse Eubanks is a certified Enneagram coach and host of The EnneaCast, a podcast exploring personality and relationships through the lens of the Enneagram. He is also the founder and executive director of Love Thy Neighborhood, an urban missions agency putting young adults on the front lines of nonprofit work. Jesse and his wife, Lindsay, have two children and live in Louisville, Kentucky.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • The nine essential desires and how one comes to the forefront in our lives.
  • Some of Jesse’s cardinal rules for using the Enneagram and why they are essential to consider.
  • The three vital underlying emotions that are harming us and their antidotes.

Favorite quotes:

~~“You can not have healthy relationships without self clarity. Self clarity is essential. It is essential for intimacy with other people, intimacy with God, and emotional flourishing. You need a tool to help you grow in your ability to see yourself from the outside and the Enneagram can serve you in that way. It will absolutely lead to deeper, more fulfilling relationships with God, other people, and yourself.”

~~“Our story that we have lived has a profound influence on who we are. We can’t understand our personality and our Enneagram type apart from understanding our life story.”

~~“The Enneagram as a tool can definitely be utilized to help us grow in our self awareness and have an understanding of what’s happening on our end of the relationships we have with other people.”

~~“It is really important to understand we are wielding something powerful when we look into the Enneagram and we suddenly have insights into other people. We have to approach that with a huge degree of humility, kindness, and empathy.”

How to Live Free From Time Anxiety with Jen Pollock Michel02 Jan 202300:34:01

Hey, hey, everyone! Today I welcome show writer, speaker, coach, and podcast host, Jen Pollock Michel for a very insightful (and much-needed) conversation about our love-hate relationship with our clocks and the anxiety it often brings to our lives.

Be sure to listen to how Jen discusses a couple of truths she has landed on, including-

  1. “Time belongs not to us but to God.”
  2. “There is always enough time to do what God has planned.” Whew. So good but often so hard to live, am I right, friends?!  She reminds us of the importance of living not in our timing or the timing of others but in having the courage to live in God’s timing for our lives.

So much wisdom is found in what Jen discovered while writing her most recent book titled, In Good Time: 8 Habits for Reimagining Productivity, Resisting Hurry, and Practicing Peace…. I promise you don’t want to miss out on this eye-opening conversation!

Jen Pollock Michel holds a B.A. in French from Wheaton College, an M.A. in Literature from Northwestern University, and is working on completing an M.F.A from Seattle Pacific University. After eleven years of living in Toronto, Jen now lives in Cincinnati with her husband and two youngest children.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • What time anxiety is and how it plays out in our lives, whether we're trying to find time, save it, manage it, or make the most of it.
  • Some of the assumptions we often have concerning time management and how we can ground our lives in God’s timing.
  • The eight practical habits for reimagining productivity and how embracing those will help us develop a healthier relationship with the clock.

Favorite quotes:

“A faithful life is a courageous life. Tuning our ears to God’s voice takes a lot of courage.”

“A practical place to start is to think about habits and practices of everyday life.”

“There is not a right way. It is actually living every day in faithful response to God’s voice. ”

How To Overcome the Fear of the Future with Alli26 Dec 202200:36:19

Merry day after Christmas, friends!

How about we just start today’s episode with this thought… I think it’s safe to say none of us are disappointed that 2022 is on its way out the door.

As I planned what to talk about on the show today, I couldn’t help but think about how we’re all continuing to process everything that has happened this year (and the last two years really!) while also planning for the one to come.

With that in mind, I felt a little nudge that I needed to talk about Chapter 9 of my book, Fierce Faith: A Woman's Guide to Fighting Fear, Wrestling Worry, and Overcoming Anxiety. In 2017, I titled that chapter “What If Things Fall Apart?” and I don’t think anything could be more relevant now.

I'm so excited to share the chapter with you today. I sincerely hope that this chapter brings peace about the future and encourages you to find your own stones of remembrance to remind you of God's faithfulness along the way.

Listen in to hear all about:

  • How fear can paralyze us from making our dreams come true.
  • What can happen when we wait for the perfect moment to take action (and how it can keep us wandering around the desert for 40 years).
  • What God really thinks about our plans to become successful in all that we do.

How To Prayerfully Ask for What You Need with Alli19 Dec 202200:33:36

On the show today, we’ll dive into Chapter 10 of my latest book, Standing Strong. This chapter, titled Ask For It: I’m Relearning How Prayer Really Works, is especially relevant today as we all look towards 2023 and what next year may bring.

In Chapter 10, I share how God revealed to me that he genuinely wants to partner with each of us in our journey and how an intentional walk with him is the adventure of a lifetime.

But it all starts with prayer, my friends.

Prayer is powerful, and we know that. However, our prayers also have the power to change God’s mind. He always listens because He cares about us and knows what matters to us.

Inviting Him through prayer helps us better understand his plan for our lives, even when we resist because we think we have it all figured out.

So as we approach the end of 2022, I challenge you to ask for what you need in full faith that God will give you what is best for you.

Listen in to hear all about:

  • How the ways we view God determine how we live our lives.
  • To step into the life God has called you to, you must know the truth and partner with it.
  • Instead of living in the land of “good enough,” we should ask God to show us His “immeasurably more.”

The New Year Blueprint: Small Actions, Big Results, and a Happier You02 Jan 202500:18:27

Happy New Year, friend! Welcome back to the very first episode of 2025! This episode is all about kicking off 2025 with purpose, excitement, and a plan to live fully into the life God has for you. If you’re someone who starts January with big goals but loses steam by February, don’t worry. This year is going to be different.

Today, we’re not just setting a resolution but building a foundation. I’m going to help you shape this year with clarity, courage, and connection so you can finally feel aligned with your dreams, your values, and your faith.

Timestamps:

(01:12) - Getting Clear on What You Want (and Why It’s Totally Important)

(02:15) - Making  2025 Your Year of Action-Packed Awesomeness

(04:18 - Redefining Failure: Let’s Rock 2025 with Confidence

(07:40) - Building Connections That Truly Matter

(08:54) - Finding Joy in the Journey (Because Life’s Too Short Not To)

(14:31) - My Must-Have Recommendations for an Amazing 2025

Action Steps:

  • Write down three things you want more of this year. More time with family? More peace in your day? More courage to pursue your calling? (02:15)
  • Think of one goal you’ve been procrastinating on. What’s the smallest, simplest first step you can take today? (02:47)
  • Write down one way failure has taught you something valuable in the past. Use it as proof that you can handle whatever comes your way this year. (06:05)
  • Think of one relationship you want to strengthen in 2025. Text that person today and set up a time to connect, whether it’s coffee, a walk, or just a catch-up call. (08:18)
  • Every day this week, look for one moment of joy. Write it down, share it with someone, or just savor it in your heart. (10:24)

Questions: Take 10 minutes this week to think about these questions.

  • What’s one thing I want to feel proud of by the end of the year? (11:12)
  • What’s holding me back, and how can I overcome it? (11:27)
  • Who are the people I want to invest in this year? (11:39 )
  • How can I bring God into my daily decisions? (11:49)
  • What’s one simple way I can create joy this week? (12:02)
  •

Recommendations:

What I’m loving this week are H&M tops, which are basically what I've worn since last summer. The fitted H&M Fitted T-shirt look good enough to be worn alone or under a blazer. I probably have four of every color!

I found a collagen I really love, and love it so much I can put it in plain water and drink it. I don’t mess with flavors anymore. It’s Bulletproof Collagen Peptides.

I found a mascara that I love! As of right now, Mile High Club Mascara is my new favorite and is in the top tier category.

How To Hear God More Clearly with Pete Greig12 Dec 202200:52:22

Have you ever wondered if you’re hearing God or just listening for what you want to hear? Me too, friend!

This is why I’m re-airing an episode  I had earlier this year with Pete Greig as he talks with me about how to hear God, which I believe to be one of the most important topics we’ve ever covered on the show. (Hence the re-air because it never hurts to hear important information more than once, am I right?!)

Pete and I discuss why hearing God speak to us is so challenging for some. And we also talk about how to identify what’s actually the voice of God and ways to sort through delusion and deception. We are covering so much ground in this episode!

Pete has committed his life to help people hear the voice of God and facilitating the supernatural outpouring of His word and truth throughout the world. In addition to being a best-selling author, Greig is one of the founding champions of the earth-rattling 24-7 Prayer Movement and Senior Pastor of Emmaus Road Church in the south of England.

Listen in to hear all about:

  • Why we are comfortable talking to God but not so much talking with God.
  • Differentiating between when God is speaking to us and what isn’t actually God at all.
  • How to determine the difference between God’s word and God’s whisper (and why it matters!).

Favorite quotes:

~ How do ordinary, normal people, grow in the most important thing we’ll ever do, which is walking and talking with God?

~ Ask yourself : a) Is this affirming? b) Is it Biblical? c) Is it Christlike? If the answer is yes, this is affirming, biblical, and Christlike, then it will be good even if it isn’t God.

~ We need to hear God in community. We often need to discern God's will with other people, not just our own thoughts.

In this episode I answered this question:

  1. I feel uncomfortable building a platform. How can I do it in a healthy way? (42:12)

How to Find Your Way with Shauna Niequist05 Dec 202200:47:01

Hey friend! Do you find yourself still reeling from the extraordinary changes we’ve experienced over the past two years in one way or another? (My hand is raised over here for sure!)

Today, I’m bringing back one of my favorite episodes from 2022 - the amazing  Shauna Niequist ! I brought this conversation back from the archives because I don’t know about you, friend, but this book and Shauna’s message still feel relevant to what’s going on around me right now. I hope you also find value in listening to this one once again with me.

In this episode, Shauna and I take a deep dive into how pain can make us tender, demand less of the world, and show us the good even in the face of what has been lost. We also talk about how seasons of significant loss can act as catalysts to significant transformation in our lives.

Our pain doesn’t define us; what we do with it does. You truly don’t want to miss this one, my friend!

Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and her latest book, I Guess I Haven’t Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their sons, Henry and Mac.

Listen in to hear all about:

  • The concept of finding your next self.
  • The importance of taking care of ourselves (and how to cultivate a desire to fight for our health!).
  • How to live lightly and be a person who is easily delighted.

Favorite quotes:

~~If you feel overwhelmed by the mess that your life has become, don't try to go through that alone.

~~I need to not listen to the voices that are telling me who to be, I need to get quiet enough to listen to the voice deep inside of me to see what she has to say.

~~We don't change when we are feeding ourselves a steady diet of shame and abuse. We change when we anchor ourselves in love and self-esteem - That’s what gives us the courage to make changes.

~~I want to walk through life not dragging around these resentments, grudges and complaints. I want to live with a sense of freedom, with a lot of space inside myself,  inside my heart for possibility for the present and the future instead of feeling like I am dragging my past behind me like an anchor.

~~I want to maintain the capacity to be easily delighted. I want to be a person for whom joy comes easily and frustration is harder to come by.

~~Pain can tenderize you and can make you demand less of the world and can show you what’s good even in the face of what’s been lost.

In this episode I answered this question:

  1. Do you have quotes that you frame for inspiration? (41:13)
