The third Fight's On! episode explores Air Force flight school from selection through primary and advanced training to winging, culminating in assignment to a pilot's first combat unit as told through the eyes of an F-16 combat veteran.

Fight’s On! is an eight-episode series about combat aviation training focusing on how the U.S. takes newly minted (warrant) officers and molds them into combat aviators able to fight and win in today’s high-tech battlespace.

Told through the stories and experiences of U.S. military aviators in their own voices, Fight’s On! takes the listener on the journey of combat aviators from Initial flight training through advanced tactical training and multi-unit exercises, ultimately describing the current and near future systems and programs that will ensure American air dominance into the future.

Lt Col Trimble commissioned into the Air Force in 1970. He initially served as a Weapon System Officer in the F-4 Phantom. From April until December of 1972 Lt. Trimble flew 175 combat sorties with 82 of those over North Vietnam. On 27 December 1972, Desoto 03, piloted by Major Carl Jefcoat and Lt. Jack Trimble was hit by hostile fire forcing the crew to bail out over North Vietnam. Several days later, they were confirmed as POWs. Lt. Trimble and Major Jefcoat were released on 29 March 1973 along with the fourth and last group of POWs to be released by the North Vietnamese. Lt Col Trimble went on to earn his pilot wings and flew the F-4 for the remainder of his career.

On June 30th 2020, Lt David “MEZr” Schmitz was killed in an F-16 mishap at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. He was assigned to the 77th Fighter Squadron which is apart of the 20th Fighter Wing. A recent article written by Rachel Cohen and published on Air Force Times highlights information never released to the public until now. “MEZr’s” ejection seat failed to work properly during an ejection sequence ultimately resulting in his death. A key component of the ACES-II ejection seat is the Digital Recovery Sequencer (DRS) which was determined to be at fault for the ejection seat failure. In this episode we talk about the revelations about suspected counterfeit chips and other components that were discovered during the investigation.

The man he grew up knowing as his grandfather, Roger, was career fighter pilot and was shot down over Vietnam in an F-105. The day he was flying he was flying with the callsign Gator 01. 

Wayne and Roger were squadron mates.  It wasn't until years after the war had ended that Wayne was officially declared KIA. 

Today Gator and his brother Jay "Pistol" Fullam are Hawg drivers as well as his sister-in-law.

He makes the case for the Super Hornet, highlighting its asymmetrical capabilities, austere field capability, weapons loadout, and joint outside platform. The discussion also touches on the concept of agile combat employment and the importance of retaining the knowledge and skill set within the A-10 community. The conversation explores alternative options such as the Super Tucano, T-7, and F-15EX, but ultimately concludes that the Super Hornet is the best choice.

The conversation explores the viability of using F-18 Super Hornets as a replacement for the A-10 Warthog.
