Ep 023. Why the Mountains Are the Best Self-Coaching Tool for Life’s Challenges26 Mar 202500:46:15

Have you ever noticed how the mountains challenge you—not just physically, but mentally? How they push you to confront your fears, reframe your struggles, and prove to yourself that you’re capable of more than you thought?

Before I ever became a coach, the mountains were already teaching me how to shift my mindset.

In this episode, I break down:

  • How I used to see myself before I found the outdoors—and how adventure changed that.
  • The three biggest mindset lessons the mountains taught me, long before I ever had the words for them.
  • A powerful coaching breakthrough from one of my backpacking students—and how shifting just one thought changed her entire experience.
  • The exact mindset shift that got me down Mount Rainier when I was frozen in fear.
  • Why learning self-coaching tools intentionally can transform not just how you adventure, but how you show up in every part of life.

And—BIG NEWS—enrollment for The Adventurous Reinvention Experience (ARE) is opening VERY soon! This is my signature coaching + adventure program, where we spend the summer mastering these mindset tools together—and then take them to the next level on an epic group backpacking adventure.

Ep 022. Too Slow? Too Shy? Too Old? How to Stop Counting Yourself Out of Having Epic Adventures19 Mar 202500:41:26

Have you ever hesitated to join a hiking group or sign up for an adventure because you were afraid you wouldn’t fit in?

Maybe you’ve told yourself:

🚶‍♀️ “I’m too slow—I don’t want to hold everyone back.”

😬 “I’m too shy—what if I feel awkward?”

🎂 “I’m too old—will I be the only one?”

If any of those thoughts have stopped you from putting yourself out there, this episode is for you.

In today’s episode, we’re talking about how to stop counting yourself out of adventure before you even try. I’ll share real stories (including my own experiences with rejection), practical mindset shifts, and what it actually takes to find your people, build adventure friendships, and create the epic experiences you crave.

You’ll learn:

  • Why self-doubt is normal—but not a reason to stay home
  • How to choose to belong in any adventure (even when it feels scary)
  • The difference between fitting in and belonging—and why you don’t need an invitation to start
  • How to embrace rejection as part of finding your people
  • Tangible steps to get out of your comfort zone and start saying YES to adventure

If you’ve been waiting for permission to stop holding yourself back—this is it.

The Royal Arch Loop Trail Series has been a brutal, beautiful, and transformative journey—and in this final episode, I’m reflecting on what this toughest backpacking trip yet revealed about who I’ve become as an adventurer.

After four days of extreme heat, high-consequence terrain, and deep exhaustion, I realized something powerful: I’ve changed.

In this episode, I’m sharing what this adventure taught me about growth, mindset, and resilience—and why learning to navigate challenges on the trail translates to every other part of life.

  • The biggest lessons I took away from the Royal Arch Loop
  • How I’ve evolved as an adventurer over the past 12+ years
  • Why learning to embrace the hard parts of a journey changes everything

Ep 020. Royal Arch Loop Day 4 (Trail Series). Easy 4,000 Foot Uphill + Snowy Surprise + Full Circle Moment26 Feb 202500:27:22

The final day of our Royal Arch Loop adventure is here! And guess what? It turned out to be one of the easiest days yet (despite the all-uphill terrain).

After days of brutal heat, high exposure, and endless scrambling, we finally got a break—a cool, breezy morning as we tackled our last challenge: hiking 4,000 feet out of the Grand Canyon.

In this episode, Meg and I reflect on what it took to complete one of the hardest backpacking routes in the canyon. We talk about the biggest wins, the most difficult moments, and what we’ll never forget about this adventure.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode:

  • Waking up at 3 AM (again) to avoid the desert heat
  • Surprisingly enjoyable uphill hiking (who knew?!)
  • The Grand Canyon blessing us with cold air and even… snow? ❄️
  • Our final climb out—feet destroyed but feeling strong
  • The biggest lessons and takeaways from the hardest, most technical backpacking trip we’ve ever done

This is the perfect conclusion to an epic adventure. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to take on a serious desert challenge—or if this route is for you—this episode gives you all the real, honest insights.

Ep 019. Royal Arch Loop Day 3 (Trail Series). 10L Water Haul + Troll Cave + Easy Breezy Tonto26 Feb 202500:20:20

Welcome back to the Royal Arch Loop Trail Series! We are officially in the grind phase of the trip, and Day 3 was all about endurance, heat management, and pushing through mental and physical exhaustion.

This episode captures our hardest mental battle yet—navigating out of Garnet Canyon (which we didn’t even realize was Garnet Canyon at first), carrying 10 liters of water each, and racing against the desert heat.

Oh, and we also experienced something totally new on this trip: a forced five-hour mid-day siesta under a rock to avoid hiking in the brutal afternoon sun. (Spoiler: It was amazing).

What You’ll Hear in This Episode:

  • A brutal morning scramble out of the canyon with massive boulder hopping
  • The moment I had a mini-meltdown from sheer exhaustion 🫠
  • Why navigating this terrain was way harder than the topo map made it seem
  • How we found the perfect shady spot and embraced a five-hour mid-day troll cave nap
  • The absolute joy of hiking in cooler evening temps and arriving at an epic, wide-open Grand Canyon campsite

This episode is raw, real, and the perfect glimpse into the highs and lows of a tough desert backpacking trip. You’ll hear our frustrations, our exhaustion, and the moments of pure backpacking bliss that made it all worth it.

Ep 018. Royal Arch Loop Day 2 (Trail Series). No Fall Zone + Rappel + Elves Chasm19 Feb 202500:19:24

Welcome back to the Royal Arch Loop Trail Series! If you thought Day 1 was tough, well… Day 2 upped the stakes. 😅

Today’s episode is all about high-stakes exposure, a rappel, and the moment I seriously questioned my life choices. Meg and I recorded this episode straight from the trail at the end of a brutally hot day, and we’re taking you through every gritty detail—from waking up at 3 AM to navigate sketchy terrain to finally making it to a gorgeous beach campsite on the Grand Canyon’s riverbanks.

Oh, and we also hiked to Elves Chasm (because apparently, we didn’t get enough of a workout). Spoiler: It was breathtaking, but the hike back? Absolutely miserable in the heat.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode:

  • The terrifyingly narrow cliffside trail that had me questioning my life's choices
  • Rappelling with a DIY harness setup in the desert heat 🥵
  • Why Elves Chasm was worth the effort (even if I almost skipped it)
  • The Grand Canyon’s dual personality—one moment, it's magic, the next, it's pure suffering
  • My struggles with the heat & Meg’s bizarre ability to speed up when it gets hotter 😂

It’s another real, raw, and brutally honest trail recap. You’ll feel like you’re right there with us, sweating through the Grand Canyon and questioning why we signed up for this.

Ep 017. Royal Arch Loop Day 1 (Trail Series). Not So Easy Downhill + Sleeping in Frog Canyon19 Feb 202500:12:28

Welcome to the first episode of my Royal Arch Loop Trail Series! If you listened to last week’s episode, you got the full recap of our Grand Canyon adventure one year later. But now, it’s time to go back in time and experience it as it happened—raw, real, and straight from the trail.

In this episode, Meg Atteberry and I are recording from Day 1 of our Royal Arch Loop adventure. And let me tell you, this day was no joke.

We tackled endless boulder fields, climbed our way through tricky downclimbs, and were punished by the desert sun. Oh, and I sat on a cactus within the first mile. 🙃

We’re sharing it all—the highs, the lows, and the unexpected (including an aggressively loud frog orchestra at camp).

What You’ll Hear in This Episode:

  • Why Day 1 of the Royal Arch Loop was brutally long (and why we kept saying “just two more miles” for hours)
  • The surprising technical challenges we faced early on
  • Meg’s “desert mode” vs. my Colorado winter legs struggle 😂
  • My tragic encounter with a cactus (and Meg coming to the rescue)
  • The moment of awe that made the day worth it
  • A sneak peek at what’s coming on Day 2

This is the real behind-the-scenes of an epic desert backpacking trip. You’re going to feel right there with us on the trail, sweaty, exhausted, and laughing at the chaos.

We chat about trail name antics, losing (and recovering) gear, and what it was like camping at one of the busiest backcountry sites we’ve ever seen.

In this episode:

  • A smoky climb over Guyot Pass
  • Losing trekking poles (oops)
  • Trail names: “Baby Lamb” and “Black Ant” are born
  • A dreamy lunch break and marinated chickpeas
  • Reflections on soreness, long days, and finding rhythm

  • How our bodies handled the first big mileage day
  • Allison’s gear pain points
  • Michael’s pack upgrade & gear thoughts

Welcome to the John Muir Trail Podcast Series - I'm taking a little summer break from the podcast while I head off on some new adventures (and guide some epic client trips too!). But I didn’t want to leave you hanging—so I’m sharing something special: a never-before-released Trail Series from our John Muir Trail thru-hike.

These short, behind-the-scenes episodes take you day by day through our journey on the JMT, including all the real, raw moments along the way. Enjoy!

We’re kicking off the JMT Trail Series with Day 0—aka, all the chaos before we even hit the trail. In this episode, Michael and I talk through our final prep day before starting our 2020 John Muir Trail thru-hike, including our alternate route decision, permit challenges, and the emotional rollercoaster of dealing with massive California wildfires.

If you’ve ever planned a big backpacking trip and felt overwhelmed by logistics, weather, or “what-ifs,” this one’s for you.

In this episode:

  • Why we started south of Whitney instead of at the portal
  • Our original 22-day hiking plan
  • How wildfire smoke nearly canceled the trip
  • The backup route we almost took (Shepherd Pass!)
  • Last-minute changes and mindset shifts to stay safe and flexible

Ep 041. John Muir Trail Day 5 (Trail Series). Forester Pass, Dreamy Camp, and Our First Trout Dinner09 Jul 202500:32:00

Today was one of those wow trail days. We crossed the legendary Forester Pass—one of the tallest passes on the JMT—and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The approach was breathtaking, with massive granite walls and a surprisingly kind set of switchbacks. On the other side, we scored what might be our favorite camp yet: tucked beside a rushing creek and waterfall, totally secluded.

Michael caught his first backcountry trout and we cooked it for dinner (with a little salt, pepper, and tru-lemon flavor—backpacking gourmet style). Plus, we reflect on trail routines.

In this episode:

  • Climbing Forester Pass (and why a northbound approach might be the best)
  • Scoring an epic, private campsite near water
  • Catching and cooking our first wild trout
  • Trail routine reflections and slow-down moments

🎧 Come along for one of the most iconic days on the trail—you won’t want to miss this one.

Ep 040. John Muir Trail Day 4 (Trail Series). Steady Miles, Trail Characters, and Battery Life Talk09 Jul 202500:32:06

Today was all about putting in steady miles and soaking in the simplicity of trail life.

We hiked from Guitar Lake down to the Shepherd Pass junction—nothing too intense, just a consistent grade with beautiful granite landscapes and blue skies overhead.

We crossed paths with a few interesting hikers (including someone dealing with altitude sickness), had songs stuck in our heads, and reflected on the weird little routines that form when you’re five days deep into the backcountry. Plus: some honest updates on feet, battery life, and what it’s like to hike with a USB-powered life system.

In this episode:

  • Hiking from Guitar Lake to Shepherd Pass junction
  • Random trail thoughts, musings, and song obsessions
  • Interactions with fellow hikers + altitude stories
  • Battery and gear performance updates
  • A quiet, simple camp and a little peek into trail routines

Ep 039. John Muir Trail Day 3 (Trail Series). Summiting Mount Whitney, Blister Battles, and a Cheesecake Fail09 Jul 202500:21:08

Today was a huge milestone on the trail—we summited Mount Whitney! It’s the official start point for northbound JMT hikers, and the 3,000 ft sunrise climb from Guitar Lake made for an epic morning.

We soaked in summit views, shared a snack break with strangers (some naked, some not 😅), and reflected on how it felt to officially begin our long walk north.

Back at camp, we dealt with emerging blister issues, talked about our feet (a lot), and closed the day with a wildly disappointing attempt at backcountry cheesecake.

In this episode:

  • Climbing Mount Whitney at sunrise (Michael’s first time, Allison’s second)
  • Unexpected summit entertainment 🙈
  • First real blister drama of the trip
  • The magic of Guitar Lake… when you have it to yourself
  • Polar plunges, trout attempts, and a cheesecake recipe gone wrong

🎧 Tune in and walk with us—this trail is just getting started.

Ep 053. John Muir Trail Day 18 (Trail Series). Silver Pass, Trail Friends, and Purple Lake06 Aug 202500:16:54

Today we climbed Silver Pass, tackled nearly 13 miles of rolling terrain, and finally arrived at camp with time to spare—our reward after days of pushing hard. We soaked our feet in one of the coldest creeks yet, hiked through fish-filled rivers and steep switchbacks, and ended the day at the scenic (but misleadingly named) Purple Lake.

The heat still showed up for parts of the day, but Allison's heat rash had miraculously vanished, and our trail crew grew by one as we hiked all day with our new friend. Michael even tried his luck at fishing with his half-rod again (with one clever trout evading him at the last second).

We’re dirty, tired, and dreaming of Red’s Meadow tomorrow—burgers, laundry, showers, and maybe a little reset before our final JMT push.

In this episode:

  • Climbing Silver Pass and easing into the rhythm of the trail
  • Miraculous heat rash recovery and cooler trail temps
  • The trout of Fish Creek (and Michael’s almost-catch)
  • Painfully cold water, switchbacks, and beautiful alpine lakes
  • New trail friendships and group hiking dynamics
  • The promise of clean clothes and burgers at Red’s Meadow
  • Audiobooks, nerd reads, and what we’re listening to on trail

🎧 Come along as we hike, fish, and daydream our way toward civilization—with trout rumors, icy creek dips, and some hard-earned trail joy.

Ep 052. John Muir Trail Day 17 (Trail Series). Switchbacks from Hell, Diaper Smells, and the Cold Creek Cure06 Aug 202500:26:47

Today may have been one of our shortest mileage days, but it didn’t feel that way. The combo of relentless heat, sneaky elevation gain, and one of the longest stretches without water yet brought out all the grit—and some heat rash-induced tears.

A highlight? Discovering a pristine creek (Mono Creek!) with crystal-clear pools that felt like trail magic for our overheated, under-showered selves. We soaked, snacked, and recovered enough to take on one final uphill slog before landing at a not-so-great campsite... but hey, at least we got there early for once.

Also: the smells in the tent are officially getting out of hand.

In this episode:

  • Endless downhill switchbacks on a non-pass (rude)
  • Brutal heat + a dry 9-mile waterless stretch
  • Heat rash takes over Allison’s legs—and morale
  • Diaper smells, flies, and trail funk hits hard
  • The unexpected joy of cold creek water
  • Reflections on the real (unromantic) parts of thru-hiking
  • Rumors of burgers, showers, and Red’s Meadow hope on the horizon

🎧 Join us for a sweaty, stinky, and very honest day on trail as we keep putting one foot in front of the other—rash and all.

Ep 043. John Muir Trail Day 8 & 9 (Trail Series). Glen & Pinchot Pass, Food Fantasies, and Rainbow Trout Rewards16 Jul 202500:28:57

These next two days were all about big climbs, blazing sun, and a whole lot of food talk. We tackled both Glen and Pinchot Pass, crossed over some stunning terrain, and found ourselves daydreaming constantly about fresh fruit, real meals, and a post-trail feast.

The heat rash continued to be very real, and Michael caught a new fish: The Rainbow Trout.

Trail life was starting to settle into a rhythm—sore feet, daily routines, and conversations about everything and nothing. A classic stretch of the JMT, complete with long views, sweaty backs, and just enough magic to keep moving forward.

In this episode:

  • Climbing Glen Pass and Pinchot Pass + what makes a pass feel hard or easy
  • Long Break at Raes Lakes
  • Our least favorite campsite
  • Trail food obsessions + rainbow trout
  • Battling heat rash
  • Why we’re loving quiet moments and “slow talk” out here

🎧 Come walk with us across some of the most scenic (and sweaty) miles of the trail.

Ep 042. John Muir Trail Day 6 & 7 (Trail Series). Resupply Bliss, Kearsarge Climb, and Trail Friend Encounters16 Jul 202500:29:43

Days 6 and 7 were a mix of rest, reward, and reunion. We took a much-needed resupply day in Independence, resupplied at the cozy Mount Williamson Hotel, and soaked in the luxuries of clean laundry, fresh food, and indoor sleep. Then it was back over Kearsarge Pass—packs heavier, bodies recharged, and hearts a little fuller after connecting with fellow hikers and trail friends.

These two days gave us contrast and perspective, and reminded us how sweet it is to return to trail life after stepping away for just a moment.

In this episode:

  • Resupply magic at Mount Williamson Hotel
  • The reality of resupplying (and eating everything)
  • Hiking back over Kearsarge Pass—again
  • A near gear loss + a water bottle rescue mission
  • Trail friendships, heat rash updates, and fishing reflections

Ep 051. John Muir Trail Day 16 (Trail Series). Selden Pass, Blister Battles, and a Broken Fishing Pole06 Aug 202500:30:01

Today we tackled Selden Pass, hiked over 12 rugged miles with 3,200 feet of gain, and somehow ended the day feeling more human than we have in a while. Maybe it was the early arrival to camp. Maybe it was the peaceful solitude. Or maybe it was just finally getting into the groove of trail life.

Still, the day didn’t come without its chaos. Michael realized mid-hike that he left part of his fishing pole behind, making for some MacGyver-style angling at our evening camp. We battled heat, blisters, and sand-filled shoes—but also got to rinse clothes, meet a few solo northbounders, and savor a quiet creekside evening.

We’re learning (yet again) how much smoother trail life feels when you have time to breathe, soak your feet, and eat Oreos in peace.

In this episode:

  • Climbing Selden Pass and descending into a stunning lake basin
  • Michael’s fishing pole fail and trail improvisation
  • Blister maintenance, sweaty shoes, and gear talk
  • Swapping meals and rationing snacks (RIP Snickers)
  • Making trail friends + solo hiker admiration
  • Finding our rhythm again—and remembering why we came back

🎧 Join us as we hike, fish (sort of), snack (sparingly), and settle into our JMT stride.

Ep 050. John Muir Trail Day 15 (Trail Series). Canyon Cascades, Blister Battles, and Trail Miles That Never End30 Jul 202500:23:26

Today was both beautiful and brutal. We hiked our longest mileage day yet—16 hot, rocky, and mostly downhill miles—and our feet definitely felt it. Blisters flared up, patience wore thin, and we found ourselves dreaming of our more relaxed pace from last year’s hike.

But the day wasn’t without its magic. We wandered alongside some of the Sierra’s most enchanting streams and waterfalls, dipped our aching feet in cool pools, and finally got in some backcountry fishing.

As we rolled into camp (exhausted but proud), we reflected on how fast-paced miles come at a cost—and how we want to rework the rest of our itinerary to slow down and savor more.

In this episode:

  • Miles that felt like they’d never end
  • Blisters, hot weather, and “soft” feet from Puerto Rico life
  • Stunning canyon cascades and cool stream-side moments
  • Michael’s favorite day yet—complete with fishing
  • Honest trail reflections: pace vs. enjoyment
  • And a possible John Muir Trail carving sighting (or was it?)

🎧 Come walk with us through the highs, lows, and blisters of a long day on trail.

Ep 049. John Muir Trail Day 14 (Trail Series). Muir Pass, Cowboy Coffee Cake, and Evolution Lake Magic30 Jul 202500:19:49

Today was one of the most physically and emotionally challenging days on trail—but also one of the most beautiful. After waking up at camp (surrounded by cowboys, coffee cake, and loose pack animals), we took on the long, steady climb up and over Muir Pass. The ascent was a grind, but the reward was worth it: sweeping alpine views, the iconic Muir shelter, and a sunset descent through Evolution Basin that took our breath away.

From sore shoulders to surprise trail reunions and awkward gear questions from strangers, this episode is full of real trail life moments—both magical and messy.

In this episode:

  • Cowboy hospitality
  • Mental tricks for pushing through the pain cave
  • Our uphill battle to Muir Pass (and countless false summits)
  • Why the Evolution Basin might be the most beautiful stretch of trail so far
  • Trail friendships, awkward encounters, and favorite gear surprises (Kula Cloth, anyone?)

Ep 048. John Muir Trail Day 13 (Trail Series). Return to the JMT, Bishop Pass, and a Rogue Horse Encounter30 Jul 202500:13:58

Today we’re back on trail! After taking a year off because of last seasons wildfires, we rejoined the JMT by climbing over Bishop Pass with fresh legs and cautious optimism. The trail welcomed us with sweeping views, swirling dust, and one chaotic rogue horse incident.

We ended the day camping alongside some pack animals and reflected on what it’s like to come back to something you didn’t finish the first time.

In this episode:

  • Climbing back over Bishop Pass to rejoin the JMT
  • Dusty miles, shifting trail energy, and re-entry thoughts
  • A first night's camp with pack animals
  • A rogue horse encounter
  • Tired legs and feet

🎧 Come hike along as we step back into the JMT—dust, pack animals, and all.

But I didn’t want to leave you hanging—so I’m sharing something special: a never-before-released Trail Series from our John Muir Trail thru-hike.

After a year away, we’re back. In 2020, wildfires forced us off the JMT—but in 2021, we returned to finish what we started. This episode was recorded from our hotel the night before we hit the trail again, as we reflected on our return, what’s changed, and what it means to pick up a dream that got put on pause.

Plus: a sweet moment of trail magic before the trail even begins, involving a bowl of peaches, almond milk, and an unexpected new friend.

In this episode:

  • Returning to the JMT one year later
  • What it feels like to come back after a forced pause
  • Getting permits and planning the second section
  • Peaches & almond milk
  • Pre-Hike feelings and anticipations
