Just some musical fun on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, lotsa birthdays with nods to Duke's last week (an extended 1949 arrangement of the theme with the orchestra gets us going), Ambrose Akinmusire, Shirley Horn, the late Carlos Ward, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, James Newton and an oblique recognition of the centenary last week of Chicago impresario Joe Segal whose Jazz Showcase archives are being mined by Zev Feldman for a series of Record Store Day releases.  Today's feature is a  tremendous Yusef Lateef quartet which includes Kenny Barron from 1975 - Alight upon the Lake!  

A preview of the new project Goodbye Strawberry Hill from Sharon Minemoto that tells her family's story from the incarceration and separation of her family and the Canadians of Japanese heritage in the Second World War to their resilience and optimism of the present day.  Her quartet's performance at the Anvil Theatre in New West tomorrow evening (May 2nd) will also feature a screening of a short documentary about the project - highly recommended!

Also kicking off the Miles centenary celebrations this month with the Birth of the Birth of the Cool - the 1948 Miles Davis Tuba Band concerts that preceded Miles legendary collaboration with Gil Evans and others.  A number of Miles Centenary concerts in Vancouver this month (many presented by Infidels Jazz) will touch on some of this great material!

We'll also hear from Fred Frith who will do a rare solo performance at the Revue Stage this Sunday (that Infidel certainly gets around!) and Anna Webber whose music will be featured by John Korsrud's Hard Rubber Orchestra later this month!

Celebrating the Centenary of the great Randy Weston on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!  Perhaps more than any other jazz musician of his era, he connected his music to the rhythms of Africa and the legacy of Black civilizations from around the world!

Drawing from his autobiography African Rhythms (composed by him and arranged by Willard Jenkins) we'll take a sweep across his multi-faceted career from a rare RnB sideman gig with the Clovers to his collaborations with Master Gnawa musicians of Morocco and beyond with many of his masterpieces including Uhuru Africa, Blue Moses, Spirits of our Ancestors and more!  (Too much for one show!)

We'll also sample 3 new releases which came out to commemorate the centenary including Randy Weston and Monty Alexander together!

There is a staggering number of great new jazz releases coming out all the time!  So on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, we're going to start what I think might become a regular feature - A New Releases show to highlight a number of great recent releases that we haven't had a chance to visit - every week I run out of time way before I run out of music!

Celebrating the recent birthday of one of our living jazz elders on The A-Trane Radio Program this afternoon - George Coleman is still cookin' at 91 as his recent gig at Smalls Jazz Club demonstrates! We'll take a sweep across his career from his first recording with Lee Morgan in 1957 to his most recent release (still on the charts) George Coleman With Strings.

Other birthdays include Roy Haynes (with Phineas Newborn to take in the theme) and Blue Mitchell. Preview sets for Dálava at the Zameen Art House tonight and Tord Gustavsen's trio at Christchurch on Tuesday.

Brand new single from Sharon Minemoto was released today and it gives us a glimpse of the story of her family's displacement in the Japanese-Canadian internment of the Second World War.
A psychedelic goodbye to Country Joe MacDonald (did you know that he was named after Joseph Stalin?) and the Fish with a brief side trip to Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Kid Ory's Muskrat Ramble! It's somehow ironic that Women get shortchanged again with a 23 hour International Women's Day!

Celebrating the music of great Jazz Women on this afternoon's International Women's Day edition of The A-Trane Radio Program - of course, we celebrate great music by Women all year but it's always fun to take a theme and to run with it to hear some great music.  In previous years, I've mixed contemporary and historical recordings by Women but we're mainly concentrating on currently active practitioners today and recent releases wherever possible!

We'll hear music from Anais Reno who takes in the theme, Alice Coltrane, Alina Bzhezhinska, Lakecia Benjamin, Nala Sinephro with Nubya Garcia, Chelsea Carmichael, Brandee Younger with Courtney Bryant, and Muriel Grossman.  A set featuring the members of Artemis - Renee Rosnes, a new release from Ingrid Jensen, Nicole Glover, Noriko Ueda and Allison Miller.  A preview set for DominiqueFils-Aimé who is at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts tomorrow night and The Ostara Project doing a free concert tonight at the West Vancouver Memorial Library and returning for a gig in June.  Brand new releases from Melissa Aldana with Cecile McLorin Salvant, the Maria Schneider Orchestra and Monika Herzig.  A happy birthday to Ayelet Rose Gottlieb which is followed by Kris Davis, Alexa Tarantino and Kate Wyatt.  And we finish with an oblique happy birthday to Wes Montgomery from Emily Remler recorded live in 1988.

On this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program we're celebrating the centenary today of the great Belgian musician Bobby Jaspar who played with the greatest musicians of the era back in his day but is little spoken about today.  Among others we'll hear him with John Coltrane & Mal Waldron, with his wife Blossom Dearie, in JJ Johnson's group, with Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Donald Byrd, Wynton Kelly, a rare vocal performance from Kenny Burrell, Chet Baker and one of his last performances with fellow Belgian guitarist Rene Thomas at Ronnie Scott's.

Some previews include the Infidels Jazz Presents: Sun Ra Arkestra at The Pearl (taking in the theme from a rare Saturn performance in 1977), some paranormal adventures from Mike Rud, some smokin' B3 from Michael Blake, and some Monk from Arvind Ramdas!

Besides being World Radio Day, this is Socan Reporting Week which is a perfect reason to feature great Canadian Music on this (almost) All-Canadian edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!  Keith Hartshorn-Walton took in a low-brass flavoured version of the theme.

Our first Canadian feature is a rundown of the Jazz Juno Nominees for this year: Anthony D'Alessandro, Aretha Tillotson, Justin Gray, Renee Rosnes, and Nancy Walker for Jazz Album of the Year Solo.  Then Steve Holt, Alexis Baro, the Shuffle Demons, the CODE Quartet, and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (with Jill Townsend) for Jazz Album of the Year Group.  Then Ale Avery Nunez, Alex Samaras, the Atlantic Jazz Collective (featuring Norma Winstone), Caity Gyorgy, and Laura Anglade for Jazz Album of the Year Vocal!

On this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, the first half of the show will be handed over to a retrospective of the late Richie Beirach who passed away earlier this week. We'll hear him in many contexts across his career including with his long-time collaborator Dave Liebman (Richie's visits to Vancouver were mostly in the context of their working quartet Quest), in all-star trios and solo. The late Ian McDougall, who passed away the same day as Richie, takes in the theme with his regular collaborators including Oliver Gannon.

We'll also have a quick Grammy rundown in advance of the awards this weekend that includes Lakecia Benjamin, Chick Corea, Nicole Zuraitis, Sullivan Fortner, Michael Mayo, Arturo O'Farrill (playing Carla Bley's last commissioned work), Laila Biali, The Sun Ra Arkestra (also coming to Vancouver in February courtesy of our friends at Infidels Jazz), and Branford Marsalis doing the music of Keith Jarrett.

Looking forward and looking back, kicking off 2026 in style on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!

A new release from Carsten Dahl takes in the theme and then a nod to Milt Jackson's birthday yesterday leads into a survey of some great contemporary vibes players with Joel Ross, Patricia Brennan, Sasha Berliner, and Steve Nelson.

Of course Nelson is part of the all-star ensemble at Frankie's Jazz Club this weekend along with David Hazeltine, Steve Davis, Cory Weeds, Ken Lister and Jesse Cahill so we have a set featuring all of them in various combinations (and include a nod to Nick Hempton for his 50th birthday yesterday!)

The great Sonny Greenwich turned 90 years old yesterday and will get a feature set with some great rarities, a Jimmy Dale Orchestra recording that also features Ed Bickert & Lenny Breau, Hank Mobley, a 1979 single with Claude Ranger, an unreleased JazzBeat session with Mike Allen and Julian McDonough among other gems. And we'll take it out with a preview for a great Coastal Jazz show later this month with the Action trio - David Binney, Louis Cole and Pera Krstajic!

Seasonal fun on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program - an extended feature for Carla's Christmas Carols, Carla Bley's brass quintet arrangements of some traditional tunes and a couple of her own compositions taken from both the official ECM Records 2009 release and an unofficial live contemporaneous concert.

Celebrating December 5th Birthdays on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!

Building tributes to three great musicians around live performances on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! The legendary Coleman Hawkins celebrates his birthday today and we'll hear a number of live performances including the 1940 performance of Body and Soul from the Savory Collection. Sheila Jordan's Celebration of Life took place earlier this week on what would have been her 97th birthday. We'll hear the full second set of her duo with Cameron Brown at Ironworks from March of 2017 along with a number of other iconic performances. Finally we'll hear Jack DeJohnette with his Special Edition at the Edmonton Jazz City Festival in 1980 with a short interview conducted by the late Gavin Walker along with some other favourite JD recordings.

We'll also have time for some other recent birthdays - the theme from David Amram who turned 95 earlier this week, Aretha Tillotson with a new release featuring the Jensen sisters and centenaries for June Christy (Something Cool!) and (today) Sal Salvador! Rounded out by the new release from Neil Gray featuring Julian Borkowski who is in at Frankie's Jazz Club this Wednesday recreating a great Richard Williams album and Harry Bartlett Music who brings his trio to Tyrant Studios tonight!

Special Autumn Airlift Membership Drive edition of The A-Trane Radio Program featuring the music of Pharoah Sanders this afternoon. The last few years have seen a number of reissues and archival releases featuring the music of "Little Rock" and we're going to do a bit of a survey across them.

We'll hear from Izipho Zam (My Gifts) on Strata-East Records, the Alice Coltrane 1971 Carnegie Hall Concert, Love is Here - the Complete Paris ORTF Recordings, Harvest Time and a sampling of the Complete Theresa Recordings box set on Mosaic - the last reissue project initiated by the late Michael Cuscuna! Also included are some early collaborations with John Coltrane, some comments in Sanders' own voice from a 1993 interview for ESP-Disk' and one of the final versions of his signature composition The Creator Has a Master Plan with Joey DeFrancesco!

This afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program is mainly split into 3 parts - first we'll celebrate the birthday today of the great Thelonious Monk with a sampling of his performances at the Newport Jazz Festival between 1958 and 1975 including his guest appearance with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1962 and his final public performance at Newport in New York in 1975. I was spurred to include Monk's Mood by Bill Charlap's wonderful interpretation at Pyatt Hall on Wednesday!

Next up, the much anticipated performance by Ches Smith's Clone Row appearing at the Revue Stage on Granville Island tonight presented by Coastal Jazz. We'll hear from the new release by Ches Smith, as well as releases from Mary Halvorson (new!), Liberty Ellman and Nick Dunston!

Third, previews and new releases from Peggy Lee, Robin Holcomb, Mike DiRubbo, Bill Coon, Roddy Ellias, the Trio of Bloom (with a congratulation to Craig Taborn for his MacArthur Fellowship), Cecile McLorin Salvant, and Joni Mitchell visiting Harry's House and wishing Harry Sweets Edison a happy birthday by way of his Centerpiece.

Mostly previews and birthdays on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program. Oliver Jones takes in the theme - he turned 91 yesterday and is still participating in some of the Oscar Peterson centenary celebrations happening across the country.

The focus is on Saxophones on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!

Vancouver is celebrating this weekend's birthday of Sonny Rollins with a series of concerts recreating albums from his amazing career culminating in a screening of Robert Mugge's documentary at the VIFF Theatre this Sunday (Sonny's actual 95th birthday!) We'll sample from the albums in that tribute series and include the legendary performance of G-Man from that doc!

Art Pepper's Centenary was earlier this week and we'll take a sweep across his career in two extended sets separated by his 1960s hiatus demonstrating his mastery of the horn in both blazing tempos and achingly beautiful ballads. (Included is the piece dedicated to Laurie Pepper recorded in Toronto with Bernie Senensky, Gene Perla, David Piltch and Terry Clark released on Widow's Taste!)

Also included, new releases from David Murray (who also takes in the theme), Nicole Glover, Greg Abate and the new release from George Coleman Sr. and Strings dedicated to you!

In these waning days of summer just taking it easy on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program with preview features and birthdays! An extended feature for the great Esperanza Spalding will take a sweep across her multi-faceted career, collaborations and recordings to preview her highly anticipated performance at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts tonight!

We'll celebrate Oscar the pianist, the accompanist and collaborator and the composer with a mix of requests, career highlights and rarities spanning his 60+ year career! Solo, in duo and his many working trios as well as collaborations with Lester Young, Benny Carter, Billie Holiday, Roy Eldridge, Fred Astaire, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Louis and Ella, Buddy DeFranco, Nelson Riddle, Phil Nimmons and Nine Plus Six, Joe Pass, Oliver Jones and others!

We'll also have a set taken from the 1980 CBC TV series Oscar Peterson and Friends with guests Lorne Lofsky, Butch Watanabe, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Toots Thielemans, Joe Pass, Buddy DeFranco and Zoot Sims! We'll also visit a couple of soundtracks which will be shown at the VIFF Centre tomorrow - the 1949 NFB Norman McLaren short Begone Dull Care and the 1979 dedication to Elliot Gould from The Silent Partner.

Music from around the world is the focus of The A-Trane Radio Program this afternoon - we'll start with a couple of birthdays, Brian Auger takes in the theme, he's 86 today. Then an extended feature on the great South African saxophone player Dudu Pukwana who would have been 87 today!
But most of the show is handed over to the eclectic lineup for this weekend's Vancouver Folk Music Festival with music from Gordon Grdina's Haram, Ye Vagabonds, Bel & Quinn, Jane Siberry, Samantha Parton (as part of the Be Good Tanyas) Derek Gripper, VIIK, a full set feature for Sue Foley, Bamba Wassoulou Groove, The Zawose Queens, Emily Wurramar, Shooglenifty, Elisapie, Ruthie Foster, Speeding West (featuring Luca Benedetti) and Bab L'Bluz doing Gnawa music from Morocco!

The A-Trane 2025-06-20 - Vancouver International Jazz Festival 2025 Week 2:

As in time immemorial, the second A-Trane of this year's Vancouver International Jazz Festival features the artists performing the last weekend through the end of the festival on Canada Day! Kahil El'Zabar takes in theme with the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and then we'll hear features for Christine Jensen, Nubya Garcia, Marquis Hill, the Dave Robbins Big Band (to be played by the VJO!), Eve Risser, Open Thread (with Peggy & Dylan!), Susie Ibarra, Dido & the Hand People (to be played by Feven Kidane!) and Isaiah Collier! And if you're not too overwhelmed, a lovely piece by the always amazing Pierre Bensusan at the Fox on July 2nd! Continuing the tradition of featuring music upcoming in first week of the 2025 Vancouver International Jazz Festival (Coastal Jazz) on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!

We're as eclectic as the festival itself with featured performances by Gerry Hemingway (WHO takes in the theme!), Izumi Kimura, François Houle, Gordon Grdina, Bill Frisell, Richard Bona, Corey Harris, Makaya McCraven, Immanuel Wilkins (with a side excursion with the Lutoslawski Quartet and a commission from the Jazztopad Festival), Tyler Henderson, Cory Weeds, Betty Davis (celebrated by Mary Ancheta's MAQuestra), Kneebody (and a recent release by Ben Wendel), the New Jazz Underground, Peggy Lee & Cole Schmidt, Sharon Minemoto with Jon Bentley, musicmusicmusic Oversize!, Joshua Zubot & Strings, Dean Edward Thiessen & Stranger Friends, Eve Risser and a greasy finish with the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio.
