| Ep 1965 Is Your Program Organized… or Are You Surviving Week to Week? | 07 août 2026 | 00:08:28 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
Episode Title: Are You Building Your Program With a System… or Just Grabbing Drills?
In this episode, Coach breaks down why teachhoops.com was built and why basketball coaches need more than random drills, plays, clips, and opinions. The modern coach does not suffer from a lack of information. The real problem is knowing what fits, what to use, when to use it, and how to turn ideas into a complete program.
TeachHoops is presented as a coaching system — not just a website — built to help coaches save time, organize practices, diagnose team problems, build better habits, and coach with confidence.
Most coaches today do not need more random information.
They need a system.
There are drills everywhere. There are plays everywhere. There are clips everywhere. There are opinions everywhere.
But the real coaching questions are:
What do I use this week?
What do I teach first?
How do I organize practice?
How do I build culture?
How do I fix turnovers?
How do I teach defense?
How do I communicate with parents?
How do I build a season instead of just surviving one?
That is where teachhoops.com comes in.
TeachHoops is built for the coach who cares.
The coach working late. The coach staring at a blank practice plan. The coach trying to find one useful drill without wasting two hours. The coach who wants to build a better team but needs structure and support.
Coach makes the point clearly:
Your time matters.Your energy matters.Your season matters.Your players deserve a plan.
TeachHoops gives coaches access to tools that support the whole program, including:
practice plans
drills
handouts
courses
on-court clinics
program tools
culture ideas
offensive systems
defensive systems
special situations
youth basketball resources
high school basketball resources
leadership tools
game preparation ideas
The key message: TeachHoops is not just about getting more stuff.
More stuff without a system can actually make coaching harder.
A coach can have thousands of drills and still be guessing.
A coach can watch hours of clips and still not know what to run tomorrow.
A coach can collect plays and still not know how to build habits.
TeachHoops helps coaches move from:
frustration to diagnosisdiagnosis to planplan to practicepractice to improvement
That is the real value.
The episode uses turnovers as a practical example.
The average coach says:
“We need a better press break.”
But the better coach asks:
Why are we turning it over?
Are we catching soft?
Are we failing to pivot?
Are our passing angles bad?
Are our spacing rules unclear?
Are we dribbling into traps?
Are we rushing because we have not practiced pressure enough?
Once a coach diagnoses the real problem, they can choose the right drill, build the right practice segment, and actually improve the team.
Coach reminds listeners that they are not just offense coaches or defense coaches.
They are:
teachers
communicators
planners
leaders
problem solvers
They are dealing with:
players
parents
assistants
administrators
schedules
tryouts
roles
adversity
expectations
That is a lot.
TeachHoops is designed to support the whole coach and the whole program.
One of the strongest points in the episode is that everything in a program connects.
Your practice plan connects to your habits.Your habits connect to your standards.Your standards connect to your culture.Your culture connects to how your team responds when the game gets hard.
And the game will get hard.
That is why coaches need more than one drill. They need systems, standards, and support.
Coach challenges listeners to stop coaching alone and stop reinventing everything every week.
Instead:
build a system
use resources that save time
use practice plans when structure is needed
use drills when teaching is needed
use courses to grow
use clinics for a new voice
use the coaching community for ideas
use higher-level coaching options when personal support is needed
The message is simple:
Sometimes coaches do not need more information. They need help sorting through the information.
That is coaching. That is mentorship. That is growth.
TeachHoops is for:
youth coaches just starting out
high school coaches building a complete program
experienced coaches tightening the details
coaches who need structure
coaches who want better practices
coaches tired of chasing random ideas
coaches who want to build something that lasts
The modern coach has access to too much random information
More drills do not automatically create better teams
Coaching clarity matters more than collecting ideas
TeachHoops helps coaches organize practices, solve problems, and build systems
Better systems create more confident coaches
Confident coaches build better practices
Better practices build better habits
Better habits build better teams
Random drills create random teams.
Clear systems create confident coaches.
And confident coaches build programs with purpose.
If you are tired of scrubbing YouTube at midnight looking for one more drill, teachhoops.com was built to help.
Organized.Practical.Coach-tested.Ready when you need it.
Go to:
teachhoops.com
Look around.Find what fits.Use it.Apply it.Make it yours.
Win the Week Coach.

| Ep 1963 The Hidden Hustle Stat: Building a Defense Around Deflections | 05 août 2026 | 00:07:20 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
The box score says your team played great defense. Two blocks, four steals, plenty of highlights. So why did you give up 68 points? In this episode we tear into one of the most common lies in basketball: the idea that blocks and steals measure defensive quality. They don't. More often than not, they measure gambling, and gambling gets you beat.
The stat that actually correlates with winning never shows up on the highlight reel. It's the deflection. A hand in the passing lane, a tipped dribble, a fingertip on the entry pass. When your team piles up deflections into the mid thirties for a game, wins follow at a remarkable clip, and this episode breaks down exactly why. Deflections destroy an offense's timing, create live ball chaos that turns into easy points the other way, and grind down opposing ball handlers until they crack late in games.
But this is bigger than a stat. It's a culture play. Your players celebrate what you celebrate, and if your bench only erupts for dunks and blocks, you're training gamblers. We talk about why the deflection is the great equalizer: your least athletic kid can lead your team in deflections, and when effort stats become the currency of your program, every player on the roster has a way to get paid. That builds trust, and trust builds teams that play hard for each other.
On the tactical side, you'll get four concrete coaching rules you can install this week. The active hands rule that turns every off ball possession into a threat. Why forcing ball handlers to their weak hand produces slower, wider passes that your help defenders can feast on. The difference between digging and reaching, and why one is a deflection while the other is a foul. And the closeout detail most coaches skip: high hands that take away vision and generate free offense off tipped passes.
Then it's homework time. You'll hear a simple charting system any manager can run, a locker room posting trick that puts hustle stats on equal footing with scoring, a five minute practice segment where deflections count double and intensity goes through the roof, and a film study approach where you let your captains discover the pattern themselves without you saying a word.
Whether you coach youth, middle school, or varsity, this one gives you a complete framework for turning defensive effort into something you can measure, teach, and celebrate.
Visit teachhoops.com to connect with veteran coaches who can answer your toughest questions, and explore courses, templates, and a full community of program builders. Championship programs are built, not drawn up.

| Ep 1963 Why Can't Your Best Players Finish With Their Left Hand? | 31 juil. 2026 | 00:06:56 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
This episode is powered by TeachHoops.com, home to a massive library of skill-development drill videos
organized so you can find exactly what you need in one click. Today we attack the most universal skill
gap in youth and high school basketball: the weak hand. Every coach complains about it; almost nobody
trains it systematically. We're going to change that with a progressive challenge system your players will
actually enjoy.
We lay out a multi-week progression: from stationary weak-hand ball-handling, to weak-hand-only
finishing ladders, to live constraint games where strong-hand finishes simply don't count. You'll learn
how to set measurable benchmarks for each week, how to use friendly competition to make the grind
addictive, and why pairing weak-hand training with your LockLeft-style defensive scouting gives players
an immediate, believable reason to care.
Give this progression eight weeks and your players will finish through contact with either hand — and
your offense will stop dying on one side of the rim. Get every drill from this episode on video at

| Ep 1961 Why Don't NBA Highlights Actually Teach Your High School Players Anything? | 29 juil. 2026 | 00:06:47 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
Today's episode is sponsored by TeachHoops.com, where veteran coaches mentor you through the
exact challenges you're facing — because sometimes you need an answer tonight, not at the next clinic.
In this episode, we challenge a habit almost every coach has: teaching with NBA clips. When a sixteenyear-old watches a professional make a play, he files it under entertainment, not instruction. The gap
between him and that player is too wide to feel real.
Enter the believable model: clips of players who look like your players — same age, same level,
sometimes the same jersey — executing the concept correctly. We cover how to build a believablemodel clip library from your own game film, how one clip of your backup point guard making the right
read outteaches an hour of professional highlights, and how peer modeling changes what players
believe is possible for themselves. Belief, it turns out, is the real curriculum.
Start clipping your own players doing it right this week, and watch how fast concepts start sticking. For
clip organization tools and film-teaching courses built by coaches who use them, visit

| Ep 1957 Does Your Team Actually Know Where to Run When Possession Changes? | 23 juil. 2026 | 00:06:39 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
Today's episode comes to you from TeachHoops.com, the coaching community where you never have to
figure it out alone — thousands of coaches sharing what actually works, every single day. In this episode,
we get concrete about transition offense: the exact spots your players must sprint to the instant
possession changes, no reads, no decisions, no excuses. Great transition teams aren't faster; they're
more organized.
We lay out a complete set of transition spacing rules: who takes the rim run, who fills the corners, where
the trailer arrives, and how the point guard's first dribble dictates everything. You'll learn how to drill
these rules until they're automatic, how to grade them on film with a simple checklist, and how these
same landmarks flow seamlessly into your half-court offense so there's never a dead moment where
your team stands around deciding what to run.
Install these rules and your team will generate easy baskets from structure, not luck. Listen in, take
notes, and rep it tomorrow. For the full transition offense course and printable practice templates, join
us at https://teachhoops.com/.

| Ep 1955 Are You Hunting Advantages Before You've Even Created Space? | 21 juil. 2026 | 00:07:47 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
This episode is powered by TeachHoops.com, the platform that helps you grow from an X's and O's
coach into a CEO-style program builder who wins championships. Today we unpack a philosophy that
will reorganize how you think about offense: space before advantage. Most transition offenses fail
because players chase the advantage — the layup, the mismatch — before the floor is spaced, and the
whole possession collapses into a crowded mess.
We walk through what elite spacing actually looks like in the first four seconds of a possession: which
spots must be filled, in what order, and by whom. You'll learn the non-negotiable landmarks for your
guards and wings, how proper spacing makes every subsequent action more dangerous, and why a
spaced floor turns an average ball handler into a good one. We also cover how to teach it with
constraint-based small-sided games instead of endless whiteboard lectures.
When your players learn to create space first, the advantages start finding them. This episode shows you
how to build that habit into your program from day one. For complete offensive frameworks and the
practice plans to install them, head to https://teachhoops.com/.

| Ep 1954 If Basketball Needs a Shot Clock, the World Cup Needed One Yesterday | 20 juil. 2026 | 00:05:51 | |
TeachHoops Podcast Show NotesEpisode Title
Soccer Fans Waited 106 Minutes for One Goal. You Can't Handle a 45 Second Possession?
Spain just won the World Cup 1-0 with the only goal coming in the 106th minute, and over a billion people called it a masterpiece. Meanwhile, if a high school team holds the ball for 45 seconds, the gym loses its mind and the shot clock debate explodes all over again. In this episode, Coach Collins uses the biggest sporting event on the planet to take a hard, honest look at the shot clock argument: what the critics get wrong, what they get right, why tempo control is a strategy and not a crime, and how to actually coach late clock situations whether your state has a clock or not. If you coach at a school that doesn't reload with talent every year, this one is for you.
The World Cup final was two hours of patience, tension, and one moment of quality. Nobody demanded soccer speed up. Basketball gets no such grace. Coach breaks down why the stall is strategy, why the shot clock rewards rosters more than coaching, why the clock is coming anyway, and the specific skills coaches need to teach to win with one.
00:00 | Cold Open: The Most Watched 1-0 Game in History
Spain 1, Argentina 0. Scoreless through 90 minutes. Ferran Torres finally scores in the 106th minute of extra time. Argentina finishes the World Cup final with zero shots on goal. And the world called it beautiful. Set the hook: why does soccer get celebrated for patience while basketball gets crucified for it?
05:30 | The Double Standard
Scarcity creates drama. Tension creates drama. Soccer fans understand that every scoring chance matters BECAUSE scoring is rare. Basketball somewhere decided more shots equals better basketball. Push back on that. More shots just equals more shots.
11:00 | What the Stall Actually Is (A Coach's Defense of Tempo)
Personal stories from 30 years at Memorial. Times I held the ball. Times it was held on me. Why slowing the game down is the great equalizer for the shorter team, the undermanned team, the school without the AAU pipeline. Strategy, not cowardice.
19:00 | The Uncomfortable Truth About Who the Shot Clock Helps
The clock does not reward good coaching. It rewards good rosters. Walk through it honestly: force a shot every 35 seconds and the more talented team wins more often, period. If you coach at a have-not program, the clock takes a weapon out of your hands.
26:00 | The Other Side of the Argument (Being Fair About It)
Steelman the pro clock case. Players want to play the way they watch. Every level above high school uses one. Recruiting and player development arguments. End of game farming and intentional fouling ugliness that the clock genuinely cleans up. Acknowledge what's real here.
33:00 | The Clock Is Coming. Now What?
The debate is basically over in most states, so stop fighting yesterday's war. The coaches who win with a shot clock are the ones who start TEACHING it. Late clock offense sets. Time and score situations as a daily drill, not a February surprise. Defending the last 8 seconds of the clock. Turning the clock into YOUR weapon.
41:00 | Practice Ideas This Week
Three specific things to install: a 10 seconds left "get a good one" action, a scripted possession value drill where turnovers cost double, and a defensive late clock scramble drill. Keep it concrete so coaches leave with homework.
47:00 | The Real Lesson From Sunday
The final wasn't great because of shot volume. It was great because two teams executed under pressure for two hours and one moment of quality decided it. That's the standard with or without a clock: value the ball, treat every possession like currency, patience is a weapon and panic is a choice.
50:00 | Wrap Up and CTA
"Spain didn't score for 105 minutes and won the whole thing. Your team can survive a 58 second possession."
"The shot clock doesn't reward good coaching. It rewards good rosters."
"Scarcity creates drama. When scoring is hard, every possession means something."
"The coaches who win with a shot clock are the ones who stop complaining about it and start teaching it."
Tempo control is strategy, and it's the underdog's best weapon.
The shot clock helps talented rosters more than it helps good coaches.

Today's episode is brought to you by TeachHoops.com, home to thousands of organized drill videos,
defensive breakdowns, and course templates — everything in one click instead of scrubbing through
random YouTube videos. In this episode, we install the LockLeft defensive framework: a simple,
teachable system built on one ruthless idea — force every ball handler to his left hand, every possession,
all game long.
We cover the core rules: how on-ball defenders angle their stance to take away the right hand, how help
defenders shade to shrink the left side of the floor, and how the whole scheme squeezes passing
windows until offenses start throwing the ball to you. You'll learn the three most common breakdowns
when teams first install it, how to rep it with simple shell drill constraints, and why this system is
especially powerful at the high school and youth levels, where almost nobody can finish with their weak
hand.

| Ep 1952 Why Do Talented Teams Underachieve While Less Gifted Teams Overperform? | 16 juil. 2026 | 00:06:34 | |
This episode is sponsored by TeachHoops.com, where you get direct access to veteran coaches who
have faced every tough locker room situation you can imagine — real mentorship, one question away.
Today we examine a painful case study every coach recognizes: the loaded roster that never comes
together. Talent doesn't guarantee wins, and the missing ingredient is almost always trust — between
players, between players and coaches, and between the team and the plan.
We break trust down into coachable components. You'll learn how to build vulnerability-based trust
through structured team activities, how your own consistency as a coach either deposits or withdraws
from the trust account, and why role clarity is the fastest trust-builder there is. We also cover the
moment most coaches miss: how you respond to a player's mistake in a big game tells the whole roster
whether your words about trust are real.
Trust isn't a poster on a wall; it's a system of daily behaviors you can install starting tomorrow. This
episode gives you the blueprint. When you're ready to talk through your own locker room challenges

why does my 13 year old suddenly want to quit sports? SUBTITLE: how to find out what's really going on when your teen won't talk DESCRIPTION:
why do teenagers suddenly quit sports they love? a mom in portland wrote to me because her 13 year old daughter went from sleeping in her jersey to done, overnight, and won't say why. in this episode i answer the questions parents of teen athletes ask most. why won't my teenager tell me what's wrong? should i let my child quit a sport mid-season? is 13 a normal age for girls to drop out of sports? the answer to that last one is yes, thirteen is the age girls leave sports in droves, and it's rarely about the sport itself. i walk through what usually hides underneath a sudden quit, from locker room comments to friendship fallout to changing bodies, why direct questions make a quiet teen quieter, why the you-made-a-commitment speech closes the door, and the side-by-side conversation technique that gets teenagers talking when face to face feels like an interrogation. plus how to keep the door open if she really is done, without pushing her through it. got a question for the show? email me. hey@heysammi.com

| Ep 1950 Could a Two-Minute Conversation Save Your Most Frustrating Player? | 14 juil. 2026 | 00:07:01 | |
https://teachhoops.com/.
Today's episode is powered by TeachHoops.com, where ready-made practice plans and vetted
playbooks save you hours every week and give you time back with your family. In this episode, we dig
into the single most underrated tool in coaching: the deliberate, two-minute, non-basketball
conversation. The player who won't respond to your corrections, who sulks after mistakes, who seems
checked out — that player almost never has a basketball problem. He has a connection problem.
We walk through exactly how to structure these conversations: when to have them, what to ask, what
to never ask, and how to keep them from feeling forced. You'll hear real examples of players who
transformed over a season simply because a coach asked about their little sister, their part-time job, or
the game they were playing on their phone. Connection precedes correction, and we show you how to
build it systematically rather than hoping it happens.
Try this challenge: pick your most difficult player and commit to one two-minute conversation each
week for the next month that never mentions basketball. Then watch what happens to his effort on the
floor. For more culture and communication tools from coaches who have lived it, visit

https://teachhoops.com/
This episode is brought to you by TeachHoops.com, the online community where coaches stop feeling
like they're alone on a coaching island and start swapping ideas with peers who get it. In this episode,
we tackle one of the most corrosive dynamics in any locker room: players who compete against each
other for spots on the depth chart instead of competing against their own potential. When minutes
become the scoreboard, teammates become obstacles, and your culture pays the price.
We break down how to reframe every competitive drill in practice around self-growth. You'll learn how
to set individual benchmarks that players chase daily, how to publicly celebrate improvement rather
than rank, and how to talk to your bench players so they see development as the path to playing time
instead of politics. We also cover the warning signs that your practice structure is rewarding the wrong
behavior, and the simple language shifts that change how players interpret competition.
By the end of this episode, you'll have a concrete plan to run your next practice with competition that

| Ep 1948 Maximize the Minutes: Auditing the Activity Density of Your Gym | 10 juil. 2026 | 00:33:00 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If you audit a standard, average basketball practice, you will witness a massive amount of invisible time leaking out of the gym. You will see a coach blow the whistle, call the players over, and lean against a wall for seven minutes lecturing about a new entry action while twelve athletes stand completely still, watching their physical core temperatures drop. Then, they split into a single-file line where one player executes a repetition while eleven others watch passively from the sideline.
Time is the ultimate currency for a program builder. If your practice design is slow, loose, and lecture-heavy, you aren't just wasting gym time—you are actively coding sluggish habits, mental passivity, and zero-signal noise into your roster.
In this episode, we step directly into the "Truth Room" to break down how to use your practice time with absolute precision. We move past basic time-blocking and dive into the analytics of Activity Density and structural design. Discover how to leverage your staff lenses to eliminate dead time, maximize repetitions, and build a high-transfer learning environment that slides your team out of coach-fed compliance and into a player-led championship standard.
To squeeze every ounce of development out of your clock, your script must be treated as a rigid, chronological engine. The Organizer on your staff polices the clock down to the exact second, completely eliminating long huddle transitions or slow water breaks.
The Setup: Banish quiet stretching lines from your vocabulary. Players immediately execute high-tempo dynamic activation sequences across the full layout of the hardwood.
The Velocity: This block is used to set the environmental tone. Players must continuously shout out defensive alerts through their physical movements, forcing high vocal energy into the rafters before a basketball even bounces.
The Setup: High-speed handling, spatial passing, and finishing tracks.
The Constraint: Traditional lines are an operational failure. Every drill track must feature a Multi-Ball design. If you have twelve players on the floor, at least 70% of them must be moving, catching, or passing concurrently across multiple baskets.
The Return: High rep density completely eliminates boredom leaks and forces your players to communicate through the exhaust to keep the gears turning.
The Setup: Instead of running 5-on-0 scripted walkthroughs where players act like robotic pieces on a chessboard, you break the floor into contextual 2-on-2, 3-on-3, or 4-on-4 structural shells.
The Constraint: Put tight, socratic constraints on the game play (e.g., maximum 2 dribbles per touch, or the ball must touch the high-low paint seam within 4 seconds).
The Goal: This forces your players to read the defender's hips independently. It spikes their independent Decision IQ and Next Play Speed under pressure without a coach using a joystick from the baseline.
The Setup: 5-on-5 half-court and full-court system alignment. This is where you implement your primary cutting geometry or your defensive coverages (such as an aggressive match-up zone or a trapping shell).
The Rule: You must hold an unyielding Standard of Tolerance. If a defender fails to close out with High Hands or a player displays bad body language after an error, The Antagonist on your staff stops the clock instantly. You address it in the "Truth Room," execute a quick "drive-by" technical correction on the move, and demand an immediate reset.
The Setup: Full-court situational scrimmage puzzles (e.g., down 4 with 45 seconds remaining and zero timeouts).
The Filter: Never run your critical shooting blocks or execution scripts at the beginning of practice when everyone is perfectly fresh. We intentionally place them at the absolute end when legs are heavy and lungs are burning. This builds authentic Resilience Equity, forcing players to lock into their mechanics and maximize their Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%) under extreme fatigue:
Coach's Note: "You don't build an elite basketball program by the length of time you spend in the gym; you build it by the focus and intensity you jam into the minutes you have. If your practice script allows for conversational laziness, silent shells, or long blocks of standing around, you are actively training your kids to fade under pressure on Friday night. Clean up your clock management, unleash your staff lenses, maximize your rep density, and demand that your players own the room."

| Ep 1947 Bringing Energy to Practice Everyday | 09 juil. 2026 | 00:10:24 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If you walk into a basketball facility in the dead of winter on a freezing Tuesday afternoon in January, you can instantly feel the energy deficit. Lungs are heavy, legs are burning from a multi-game weekend stretch, and the gym is completely quiet. In a typical basketball program, the head coach reacts to this quiet atmosphere by pacing the baseline and screaming at the top of their lungs, desperately trying to inject excitement into a flat group of athletes.
But if you are a masterclass program builder, you know that trying to force empty excitement from the sideline is a losing battle. Fake enthusiasm introduces an operational leak into your culture. It keeps your roster trapped in a model of robotic, coach-fed compliance.
In this episode, we step directly into the "Truth Room" to flip this dynamic entirely on its head by analyzing a critical diagnostic question. We break down how to transition from an exhausting model where you are the sole source of motivation into an elite, high-transfer ecosystem where Activity Density, structural constraints, and player-led accountability naturally generate a high-velocity workspace every single afternoon.
To accurately audit whether your practice energy is sustainable or merely a superficial, coach-driven illusion, you must evaluate your environment through this specific lens:
"If you completely locked your vocal cords, put your whistle in your pocket, and stood silently on the baseline for an entire two-hour practice, what level of intensity, vocal communication, and competitive friction would your players actively sustain on their own?"
If the energy in your gym immediately drops to zero the moment you close your mouth, your program is stuck in Level 2 compliance. Your players are Coach-Fed actors waiting for a joystick instruction. If the gym stays at a roaring, high-hands championship standard, you have successfully built a Level 4 player-led powerhouse that brings its own "gym juice" to the hardwood.
You cannot simply demand energy; you must build a high-transfer practice environment that naturally extracts it through the following structural pillars:
When players stand in a single-file line of eight people waiting to take a casual finishing shot, their core temperature drops, their focus drifts, and their energy plummets.
The Blueprint: Your practice script must feature a mandatory Multi-Ball architecture. Ensure that at least 70% of your roster is actively catching, moving, or passing concurrently across all available baskets. High rep density leaves zero room for conversational laziness.
You should never carry the burden of being the only high-energy signal in the gym. Allocate specific structural roles to your assistant coaches based on their unique DNA to keep the floor moving at a rapid clip.
The Blueprint: Empower The Organizer to completely command the practice clock, managing sprinted drill transitions to eliminate dead time. Unleash The Antagonist to act as your bad-cop culture enforcer—the voice that stops the clock instantly the second a player soft-recovers on a closeout or drops their hands through fatigue.
When your players face extreme physical exhaust or a tough, high-friction scrimmage deficit, they will naturally want to retreat into quiet isolation.
The Blueprint: Mandate a streamlined, high-signal language. Replace passive, empty apologies ("My fault, coach") with an immediate physical reset command: "Next Play Speed." When the focus starts to fracture, banish sideline coaching lectures and demand that your athletes step up to "Own The Room." This simple linguistic boundary forces your players to become the ultimate enforcers of the energy standard.
Coach's Note: "Stop trying to be a cheerleader for your basketball team. If you have to bring all the juice to the gym every single afternoon, you are going to be completely burnt out by February, and your players will crumble the second they play a tough road game in a hostile environment. Stop over-coaching effort. Clean up your practice clock, maximize your rep density, implement small-sided socratic constraints, and force your players to own the room. Build a self-policing powerhouse."

| Ep 1946 What the Absolute Best Coaches Do Differently | 08 juil. 2026 | 00:05:11 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If you study the vast majority of athletic programs, you will see coaches who are entirely consumed by the physical mechanics of the game. They spend hours pacing the sideline, drawing up intricate tactical screens, and micro-managing their athletes' every step with a joystick mentality. They believe that winning is a direct product of holding the loudest whistle or hoarding the largest playbook.
But if you look at the absolute best coaches—the masterclass program builders who consistently cut down nets year after year, regardless of roster turnover—you will see a completely different operational standard.
The best coaches aren't just tactical experts; they are elite organizational architects. They don't look at a team as a collection of athletes to be micromanaged; they look at a program as an integrated ecosystem designed around high Activity Density, clear operational roles, and a shared linguistic standard. This episode steps into the "Truth Room" to analyze the definitive habits, frameworks, and structural philosophies that separate the legendary program builders from the average play-callers.
The best coaches build an unshakeable ecosystem by shifting their focus away from trailing indicators like the scoreboard and focusing entirely on four high-leverage internal pillars:
Average coaches rely heavily on block practice—running static, scripted drills where players stand in long single lines waiting to take a shot or finish a move. The best coaches treat time as a premium currency.
The Blueprint: They structure their 120-minute practice scripts around maximum Rep Density. They mandate a Multi-Ball architecture so that at least $70\%$ of the roster is actively catching, moving, or scanning concurrently.
The Decision Load: They replace empty-gym cone drills with Small-Sided Games ($SSGs$) built around precise spatial constraints. This forces players to read the defender's hips independently, elevating their Decision IQ and Next Play Speed under heavy physical exhaust.
The best coaches possess zero ego. They don't try to be the only voice echoing off the rafters. Instead, they assemble a diverse coaching staff and give them absolute autonomy within clearly defined structural roles.
The Blueprint: They utilize their staff's unique DNA by deploying precise lenses. They empower The Organizer to completely command the practice clock and logistical flow. They task The Yoda with breaking down technical entry schemas, spatial geometry, and analytical counters. They unleash The Antagonist to act as the ultimate bad-cop enforcer of physical grit and defensive edge through the exhaust.
Legendary coaches never make developmental or tactical decisions based on emotional guesswork or post-game frustration. Every single adjustment they introduce is mathematically engineered to protect the program's efficiency metrics.
The Blueprint: Their ultimate offensive filter is optimizing the team's Effective Field Goal Percentage ($eFG\%$):
The Fatigue Filter: Because they understand that mechanics break down under pressure, they intentionally schedule high-stress precision shooting and situational blocks at the absolute end of practice when legs are heavy and lungs are burning. This builds authentic Resilience Equity that translates directly to Friday night success.
As a leader, your culture is not defined by the rules you write on the locker room wall; it is defined entirely by the lowest level of behavior you are willing to accept on a daily basis. The best coaches hold an uncompromised line.
The Blueprint: If a star player soft-recovers on a closeout, fails to play with High Hands, or displays poor body language after a turnover, the coaching staff stops the clock instantly. They address the execution in the "Truth Room," correct the alignment, and demand an immediate reset. They refuse to sacrifice their long-term brand to salvage a short-term, transactional win.
Coach's Note: "The best coaches don't build championship programs by micro-managing their players' every single breath; they do it by engineering an environment where excellence is the only available option. They clean up the practice clock, align their assistant staff, mandate an unyielding language like 'Next Play Speed,' and step back to let their players take total ownership. When you transition your gym from coach-fed compliance to a self-policing powerhouse, the scoreboard will take care of itself."

| Ep 1944 The Strategy of the Stoppage: Mastering Timeout Management | 06 juil. 2026 | 00:05:29 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If you watch a mediocre basketball game, you will frequently see timeouts used as emotional panic buttons. A coach watches their team turn the ball over twice in a row, loses their composure on the baseline, and burns a 60-second stoppage just to scream at their players about effort. The players stand in a loose semi-circle, hang their heads through their physical exhaust, and look at the floor. That isn’t strategic management—it’s an operational leak.
In a level 4 championship program, a timeout is a premium tactical resource. It is an intentional tool used to disrupt an opponent’s momentum, protect your roster’s Resilience Equity, and execute hyper-specific structural adjustments. This masterclass blueprint steps into the "Truth Room" to analyze how to manage the clock, frame your huddle communication, and weaponize your timeouts to maximize your team's winning probability.
When the whistle blows and your team heads to the bench, the environment must feature absolute structural discipline. If three different assistant coaches are shouting instructions while players are trying to drink water, your signal-to-noise ratio is completely broken.
The 0-Second To 15-Second Phase (The Flush): When the players first sit down, the head coach does not speak to them immediately. Let them catch their breath and flush any immediate emotional hang-time. During these 15 seconds, the head coach meets quietly with their assistant staff—relying on The Yoda for a quick analytical counter and The Antagonist for a hard pulse check on defensive grit.
The 15-Second To 45-Second Phase (The Blueprint): The head coach steps into the circle. The players are locked in, holding a high center of gravity. You present a maximum of two specific adjustments: one defensive spacing constraint and one offensive target.
The 45-Second To 60-Second Phase (The Launch): The whiteboard is erased. The coaching staff steps back, and the team's Leadership Council takes ownership of the huddle. The players look each other in the eye, echo the tactical calls, and generate a high-volume vocal launchpad before crossing the baseline.
You do not call a timeout simply because the opponent made a shot; you call a timeout when you see a recurring structural failure that is actively harming your Effective Field Goal Percentage ($eFG\%$) or boosting theirs:
The Offensive Pivot: If the opponent has adjusted their half-court shell to take away your primary cutting lanes, and your players are settling for contested, early-clock heaves in the mid-range desert, call the stoppage. Use it to re-establish your Paint Touch Ratio and get your $eFG\%$ back to an elite standard.
The Defensive Pivot: If your perimeter defenders are failing to close out with High Hands or are letting the ball slice into the high-post seam without a physical bump, call a timeout before a 4-0 run turns into a 12-0 avalanche. Re-enforce your standard of tolerance instantly.
Coach's Note: "A timeout shouldn't be a lecture hall; it should be a pit stop. If your players leave the huddle looking more stressed and confused than when they walked to the bench, you failed them as a leader. Give them clarity, strip away the emotional static, and demand elite next-play speed. Dictate the terms of the game out of the stoppage."

| Ep 1943 The 6 Winning Words: The Ultimate Anchor for a Program's Culture | 03 juil. 2026 | 00:07:16 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If you track the daily vocabulary echoing off the walls of a mediocre gym, you will hear a chaotic flood of reactive noise. Coaches scream directives every three seconds, players whisper excuses through their fatigue, and the entire ecosystem operates in a state of emotional volatility.
In a level 4 championship program, communication is treated as a premium currency. You do not need a 50-page notebook of motivational quotes or an endless array of complex slogans to build a self-policing powerhouse. You need a streamlined, high-signal language that cuts through the noise of physical exhaust and psychological stress.
After nearly three decades pacing the sideline, stepping into the "Truth Room" with hundreds of athletes, and auditing program cultures, these are the 6 winning words that serve as the absolute foundational architecture for basketball—and life—success.
The Blueprint: This is the ultimate mental tool to eliminate emotional hang-time. In a game that moves at an absolute sprint, dwelling on a missed layup, a bad whistle, or a costly turnover is a guaranteed recipe for giving up an uncontested transition bucket on the other end.
The Execution: "Next Play Speed" demands that a player flushes the negative emotion within zero seconds. You acknowledge the mistake, reset your mental framework instantly, and sprint into the next physical responsibility.
The Analytical Return: Teams that master this vocabulary protect their Effective Field Goal Percentage ($eFG\%$) because they refuse to settle for frustrated, low-IQ responses under fatigue. They control what they can control.
The Blueprint: This is the driving phrase that transitions your program out of basic, coach-led compliance (Level 2) and vaults it into absolute, transformational ownership (Level 4).
The Execution: "Own The Room" means players stop waiting for the coaching staff to demand high hands on defense, call out a screen, or pick up a teammate who is hanging their head. The athletes become the enforcers of the standard.
The Culture Destination: When your roster takes total ownership of the floor, the locker room, and the huddle, the team becomes completely Player-Led. The coaching staff is freed up to stop micro-managing effort and start making calm, macro-view tactical adjustments.
Coach's Note: "Championships aren't won by the most complex playbook or the loudest coach on the baseline. They are won by the teams that share a precise, unyielding language. If you can get fifteen players to anchor their minds into 'Next Play Speed' when adversity hits, and step up to 'Own The Room' when the energy dips, you have built a shield that will survive any dogfight. Keep the vocabulary disciplined, hold the line, and let's keep building leaders."

| Ep 1942 The Match-Up Zone Defense: Hybrid Chaos That Slashes the Opponent’s eFG% | 02 juil. 2026 | 00:07:55 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If you are tired of traditional man-to-man coverage getting picked apart by elite individual creators, but you also hate how a passive 2-3 zone lets good shooting teams sit on the perimeter and hunt rhythm jumpers, it is time to step into the "Truth Room." You need a defensive system that offers the structural safety net of a zone with the aggressive, high-pressure accountability of man-to-man. You need the Match-Up Zone.
The match-up zone is a masterclass hybrid defense designed to completely disrupt an opponent's offensive scouting report. To the passing eye, it looks exactly like a standard zone alignment. But the second the offense triggers a cutting action or enters the ball into a screening seam, the zone morphs. It locks onto players based on structural spatial constraints rather than traditional tracking assignments, forcing the offense into late-clock panics, rushed looks, and a massive drop in their Decision IQ.
We do not run a match-up zone just to look complex on film; we run it because the mathematical data behind it is devastating to modern, spacing-heavy offenses. Our ultimate defensive metric is suppressing the opponent's Effective Field Goal Percentage ($eFG\%$):
Traditional zones give up high-probability catch-and-shoot 3s because defenders are guarding "grass" instead of human beings. In a match-up zone, every perimeter catch is met with an aggressive closeout featuring High Hands and immediate ball pressure. By forcing players off the 3-point line and channeling downhill drivers directly into your interior help-side shields, you force contested, low-efficiency looks in the Mid-Range Desert.
To transition your squad from basic defensive compliance to fluid, instinctive execution, your shell must commit to three non-negotiable rules:
Talk Through the Exhaust: A match-up zone will fail instantly if your gym is quiet. Players must continuously echo vocal commands—calling out positioning shifts like "Ball," "Gap," "Help," and "Bump"—to pass off cutters seamlessly as they cross spatial boundaries.
No Uncontested Seams: Every square inch of the paint is fiercely protected. If the basketball enters the high post or the low-block seam, the closest defender locks on instantly while the weak-side wings sink to form a physical wall.
The Zero-Second Read on the Ball: There is no "resting" in this zone. The closest defender to the ball-handler must play with relentless ball pressure, tracing the rock with active hands to take away easy skip-passes and force look-ahead execution to stall out.
Coach's Note: "A lot of programs avoid the match-up zone because they think it's too complicated to teach. But it isn't a math test—it's a reflection of your team's communication and connectivity. If your players have a high standard of tolerance for laziness, this system breaks down. But when you get five competitors flying around the floor, talking through the exhaust, and treating every spatial recovery like a game-winning possession, you build an absolute shield that opposing coordinators hate scouting."

| Ep 1941 The Levels of Basketball Mastery: Which Question Defines Your Program? | 01 juil. 2026 | 00:07:58 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If you are evaluating your basketball program at the end of a week, a month, or a season, the absolute biggest trap you can fall into is measuring your success solely by the trailing indicator on the scoreboard. The scoreboard lies. Instead, true program builders look at a much deeper, more revealing metric: The Levels of Mastery.
Where does your team truly live when the coaching staff isn't actively micromanaging them? Are your players just following instructions because they fear a baseline conditioning sprint, or have they taken absolute control over the locker room? In this episode, we step directly into the "Truth Room" to map out the four distinct cultural levels of a basketball program—rephrased entirely as the critical questions you must ask to audit your roster's maturity and slide them from robotic compliance to dynamic, championship ownership.
The Diagnostic Question: "Do your players view hard coaching as a personal attack on their ego rather than an investment in their development?"
The Reality: If the answer is yes, you are dealing with Level 1 behavior. These players give bare-minimum effort, suffer from heavy emotional hang-time, and act as "Energy Takers." Their personal Effective Field Goal Percentage ($eFG\%$) and defensive activity density drop off a cliff the second they face physical fatigue or a structural deficit because they are focused on themselves rather than the shield.
The Diagnostic Question: "Are your players running your offensive sets like robotic actors who constantly peek at the sideline for validation, rather than reading the defender's hips on their own?"
The Reality: This is where the majority of high school teams live. These players do exactly what they are told—no more, no less. They are Coach-Fed. They lack the independent Decision IQ to make a zero-second counter on the fly because they are waiting for a joystick directive from the bench.
The Diagnostic Question: "Do your athletes actively hunt the paint, communicate through the exhaust, and close out with High Hands without a coach ever having to scream a directive?"
The Reality: At this level, players have internal alignment. They hold themselves accountable, maintain elite Next Play Speed after a turnover, and consistently bring positive energy to the floor because excellence has become their personal standard.
The Diagnostic Question: "Does your Leadership Council actively enforce your program's standard of tolerance and pull up lagging teammates before the coaching staff can even cross the baseline?"
The Reality: This is the ultimate destination. The team is completely Player-Led. If a teammate loafs on a defensive transition or hangs their head, a peer corrects it instantly. Your staff is freed up to transition from micro-managing dictators into macro-view conductors who make calm, tactical mid-game adjustments.
To accurately audit your program's cultural depth, look past the X's and O's and ask yourself this single, definitive question:
"If my coaching staff completely stopped speaking, gesturing, or instructing for an entire two-hour practice, what level of intensity, communication, and structural accountability would my players actively sustain on their own?"
If the energy drops to zero the second you close your mouth, your team is stuck in Level 2 compliance. If the gym stays at a roaring, high-hands championship standard, you have successfully built a Level 4 player-led powerhouse.

| Ep 1940 The Pre-Battle Lock-In: Building Team Chemistry Before Tip-Off | 30 juin 2026 | 00:04:35 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If your players are sitting in the locker room twenty minutes before a high-stakes game staring silently at their phones, listening to separate playlists on their headphones, or casually joking around about non-basketball topics, you have a massive culture leak. They are physically in the building, but mentally, they are completely scattered.
In a championship program, the final sixty minutes leading up to the opening jump are treated as a sacred window. Team bonding right before a battle isn’t about fun, casual icebreakers or silly games; it is about building Resilience Equity and anchoring your roster’s focus into a singular, unified frequency. This episode details the definitive pre-game locker room routine to transition your squad from individuals into a unified, player-led shield ready to embrace the "muck and grind" of a dogfight.
Every segment of the pre-game clock must be policed by your players. To move from simple compliance to true ownership, the coaching staff must eventually step out and let the roster's Leadership Council run the room.
The second players cross the threshold of the locker room, all personal phones, smartwatches, and headphones go into a secure team container.
The Standard: We eliminate individual isolation. If a player wants to listen to music to get hyped, it is played over a single locker room speaker chosen by the team. This forces a shared emotional environment.
The Culture Impact: This instantly eliminates outside social media noise, text distractions, and parental anxieties, forcing every set of eyes to lock into the immediate environment.
Before the coaches even walk in to write keys on the whiteboard, the players huddle around their scouting packets or digital boards in groups of three or four.
The Execution: Veteran players quiz the younger roster members on the opponent’s primary sets, personnel tendencies, and structural shooting weaknesses.
The Analytical Goal: By forcing the players to talk through the tactical layout together, they spike their collective Decision IQ before the basketball even touches the floor. It builds a cooperative mental safety net.
The coaching staff delivers the final three defensive pillars and offensive spacing constraints, and then they leave the room. The players form a tight circle—standing up, shoulder-to-shoulder.
The Interaction: This is where true team bonding happens under competitive pressure. Each player looks the teammate to their left and right in the eye and voices their specific accountability for the night (e.g., "I've got your help side all night," or "I am locking down the glass").
The Focus: They strip away personal ego. They acknowledge that when the opponent makes a 10-0 run, there will be zero finger-pointing. They commit to an elite Next Play Speed as a single unit.
Before sprinting down the tunnel and onto the hardwood, the team executes a high-energy, high-volume vocal chant or shared visualization routine.
The Execution: It must be loud enough to echo off the walls. Every player, from the leading scorer to the final player on the bench, is screaming in unison.
The Result: This physiological spike synchronizes their heart rates, flushes out pre-game anxiety, and establishes an aggressive, communicative environment before they even start their dynamic physical activation.
Coach's Note: "You can tell within thirty seconds of walking into a pre-game locker room whether a team is playing for each other or playing for themselves. A transactional team looks quiet, distracted, and isolated. A transformational championship team looks like an absolute wall of energy. They don’t wait for the game to start to connect—they lock arms in the locker room so that when the first punch is thrown on the court, they don't blink. Build a shield."

https://teachhoops.com/
When you step into a head coaching seat—whether it's your first year or your second time around—the most critical decisions you make happen before you ever draw up a baseline out-of-bounds play. You have to build your defensive and offensive shield, which means assembling a staff that features diverse tactical lenses and behavioral strengths.
In this masterclass finale, we bring all four archetypes together: The Yoda, The Antagonist, The Organizer, and The Mediator. We discuss how to audit your current staff's DNA, how to assign roles that maximize your program's efficiency, and how to blend these distinct coaching voices into a single, unified signal that drives your team toward a championship standard.
To move your program from coach-led compliance to a self-policing powerhouse, your staff must operate with absolute clarity regarding their roles within the practice shell:
Coach's Note: "A mediocre head coach tries to be all four of these people simultaneously and ends up exhausting themselves while confusing their players. A championship head coach acts as the conductor of the orchestra. They hire drivers, not passengers, assign them clear lanes, empower them to lead, and let the collective staff culture carry the program's vision."

A playbook means absolutely nothing if the human beings running the actions don't trust each other or are checked out mentally. While the head coach has to keep an eye on the entire program, The Mediator—your Player Relations Lead and Energy Coordinator—is locked directly into the pulse of the locker room.
This coach is the ultimate connector, often a younger assistant or an elite communicator who excels at building immediate Relational Capital with today's athletes. They are the bridge between the players and the head coach. They know exactly when a player is struggling with confidence, they spend hours running individual developmental workouts, and they bring contagious, high-level juice to the gym every single day.
The Mediator understands that you cannot push a player through a hard, drive-by correction until you have made massive deposits into their personal trust account.

We have all walked into a gym where a two-hour practice felt like a slow, disorganized lecture. Players are standing in long lines, coaches are scrambling to find clipboards, and transition time is completely wasted. If your coaching staff meetings consist of everyone nodding their heads in continuous agreement, your program is trapped in a dangerous cycle of groupthink. To build a championship-level defense and an unyielding locker room identity, you need The Antagonist—the Defensive Coordinator and Culture Enforcer who is completely unafraid to challenge the status quo.
This episode dives into the fiery competitor on your staff who demands absolute perfection during every single second of practice. They are the devil's advocate in staff meetings, questioning the game plan to ensure it can survive a dogfight. On the hardwood, they bring the necessary edge, driving defensive intensity, forcing physical block-outs, and building the hard-nosed habits that survive the winter.
The Antagonist is the ultimate guardian of your program's Standard of Tolerance. They understand that a team's defensive shell breaks down the second a coach tolerates lazy footwork or poor body language on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

| Ep 1393 The Yoda / Mastering the Macro-View from the Sideline | 22 juin 2026 | 00:06:13 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
https://www.thechampionshipcoach.com/
Every elite coaching staff needs an anchor—a voice of calm, unshakeable perspective that refuses to get swept up in the emotional highs and lows of a chaotic Friday night game. In this episode, we break down The Yoda archetype: the Master Strategist and Tactical Director of your program.
This coach operates with a high center of gravity, focusing entirely on advanced scouting, quarter-by-quarter adjustments, analytics, and deep player development. They don't waste their breath or shout just to hear their own voice; instead, they use their voice as a precise signal. When they speak, the entire gym stops and listens because they know the message will be packed with high-value substance.
The Yoda isn't watching the ball; they are watching the structural geometry of the floor. They are calculating how to manipulate space to maximize the team's Effective Field Goal Percentage ($eFG\%$):
While others are reacting to a missed shot, this coach is tracking the opponent’s help-side defensive leaks. They provide the head coach with radical clarity in the huddle, predicting the opponent's next move before it even happens.
Key Phrase: "Here is the adjustment they are going to make, and here is how we counter it."

| Ep 1390 The Blueprint for Impervious Character: Lessons from a 27-Year Coaching Tenure | 17 juin 2026 | 00:13:45 | |
https://teachhoops.com/
If you spend nearly three decades pacing a sideline, sweating out Friday nights, and riding the emotional roller coaster of high school athletics, you learn a lot about basketball. But more importantly, you learn a lot about life.
The greatest trap in youth sports—and in modern culture—is the belief that the scoreboard tells the whole truth. We live in a world obsessed with trailing indicators: the final score, the bank account balance, the job title, or the metrics on a screen. But after coaching hundreds of young men through the "muck and grind" of their high school years, the ultimate lesson I’ve walked away with is this: The scoreboard is a liar. It can crown you a winner when you played selfishly against a weak opponent, and it can brand you a loser when you gave a heroic, flawless effort against a superior force.
True success has nothing to do with the numbers on the wall. It is about the unyielding standard you hold yourself to when nobody is watching, and the Resilience Equity you build when life hits you with an unexpected 10-0 run.
In basketball, the average possession lasts less than twenty seconds. If a player throws a bad pass or misses a wide-open layup, and they spend the next five seconds hanging their head or kicking the floor, the opponent is already sprinting down the court for an uncontested layup. We call that emotional hang-time.
Life operates on the exact same loop. You will experience turnovers. A business venture will stall out, a relationship will fracture, or an unexpected tax bill will land on your kitchen table.
The Lesson: You cannot control the whistle that just blew, but you have 100% control over your Next Play Speed.
The Execution: Elite performers acknowledge the error, flush the negative emotion instantly, and sprint back into defensive position. The faster your mental reset, the more resilient your life becomes.
Everyone wants the glory of the buzzer-beating shot under the lights. But championship habits aren't built during the moments of celebration; they are forged during those quiet, exhausted Tuesday practices in the middle of January when the gym is cold and the energy is flat.
We can look at human development through a modified version of our favorite basketball efficiency metric, Effective Field Goal Percentage ($eFG\%$). In life, your output is a direct reflection of your daily alignment and habit selection:
If your daily efforts are scattered, emotional, or undisciplined, your overall efficiency plummets. But when you commit to Radical Consistency—showing up with a high center of gravity and a Level 4 work ethic every single day—you maximize your probability of a winning outcome over the long haul.
When a child is young, or when an employee first starts a job, they operate in a state of compliance. They do what they are told because they want to avoid a sprint or keep their position. They are Coach-Fed.
But the final frontier of growth—both on the floor and in your personal life—is transitioning to absolute ownership. You must become Player-Led.
The Shift: You stop waiting for a boss, a parent, or a coach to tell you to clean up the workspace, dive for the loose ball, or fix a broken communication stream.
The Result: You take ownership of the room. When your inner voice becomes the ultimate enforcer of your standards, you stop merely surviving day-to-day chaos and start dictating the terms of your future.
Coach's Note: "Thirty years from now, nobody will remember the exact score of a regional semifinal game on a random Friday night. But the kids who learned how to look a man in the eye during a hard correction, communicate clearly through physical exhaust, and protect their teammates like a shield—those are the human beings who win at life. Carry the bricks daily, hold your standard fiercely, and let the scoreboard take care of itself."

The Scoreboard Lies: The Greatest Life Lesson from 27 Years of Coaching
How Basketball Builds Unstoppable Life Resilience
Moving Your Life from Coach-Fed to Player-Led

Description Snippet:
"After 27 years as a head boys basketball coach, the biggest lessons I've learned have absolutely nothing to do with X's and O's. In this video, we break down why the scoreboard is a liar and how to build a life anchored in radical consistency and elite 'Next Play Speed.' Discover how to eliminate emotional hang-time after mistakes, how to transition your mindset from compliance to total ownership, and why being an 'Energy Giver' is the ultimate competitive advantage in the real world."

| Ep 1386 Rule of 3 Offense | 11 juin 2026 | 00:08:31 | |
Welcome to the Rule of 3 Offense Podcast!
Rule of 3 Offense
https://coachcollins.podia.com/rule-of-3-offense
Basketball Coaching Newsletter
Teachhoops.com
Main Topic: Basics of the Rule of 3 Offense:
The episode focuses on the Rule of 3 Offense, a flexible and straightforward offensive strategy in basketball. Steve explains the foundational concepts, benefits, and implementation techniques of this offense, aiming to provide coaches with practical insights to enhance their teams' performance.
Overview and Resources:
Rule of 3 Offense Website:
Steve introduces the Rule of 3 Offense website, where coaches can find comprehensive resources, including drills, PDFs, game and practice films. This platform is designed to help coaches effectively implement the offense.
TeachHoops.com:
He also promotes TeachHoops.com, a one-stop shop for basketball coaches, offering various resources, one-on-one calls, and a community of like-minded coaches. A 14-day free trial is available for those who want to explore the platform's offerings.
Basic Concepts of the Rule of 3 Offense:
5-Out Offense:
The Rule of 3 Offense begins with a 5-out setup, positioning players on the perimeter with five specific spots: both corners, both wings, and the top of the key. This spacing ensures continuous movement and effective use of space.
Continuous Movement:
Players are always moving with every pass, creating dynamic offensive opportunities. Both the strong side and weak side movements are crucial for maintaining offensive flow.
Backdoor and Slip Plays:
Every overplay by the defense should trigger a backdoor cut, which is one of the hardest but most essential skills to teach. Similarly, every pick has the potential for a slip to the basket, adding another layer of offensive threat.
Implementation Techniques:
Three Dribbles Max:
The offense limits players to a maximum of three dribbles. This rule prevents over-dribbling and encourages quick, decisive actions, promoting ball movement and player movement.
Reader-Based Cuts:
Players are taught to read the defense and make decisions based on their observations. For instance, the player coming off a screen must be able to react to the defense's positioning and decide whether to curl, slip, or cut.
Keeping the Lane Open:
The offense emphasizes keeping the lane (or highway) open to facilitate driving and attacking opportunities. This spacing creates more scoring chances and keeps the defense on its toes.
Benefits of the Rule of 3 Offense:
Simplicity and Learning:
Players don't need to memorize numerous plays, making it easier for them to learn and execute the offense. The Rule of 3 teaches players how to play and react rather than follow a rigid script.
Scouting Challenges:
The offense is challenging to scout because it relies on player reads and reactions, making it unpredictable and adaptable to various defensive strategies.
Versatility:
The Rule of 3 Offense is effective against both man and zone defenses. Coaches can add layers and concepts as needed, tailoring the offense to their team's strengths and needs.
Conclusion:
Steve concludes the episode by emphasizing the importance of the Rule of 3 Offense for any coach's arsenal. He invites listeners to visit the Rule of 3 Offense website for detailed resources and to explore TeachHoops.com for further coaching development. Steve previews upcoming episodes that will delve deeper into specific aspects of the offense, such as definitions, passing strategies, cutting techniques, and handling zone defenses. He encourages coaches to integrate these concepts into their practices to foster a more dynamic and effective offensive strategy.

Funnel Down Defense
https://coachcollins.podia.com/funnel-down-defense
Main Topic: The Funnel Down Defense:
The episode focuses on the Funnel Down Defense, a strategic defensive system designed to limit opponents' offensive capabilities by confining their movements to specific areas of the court. Steve explains the fundamental concepts, benefits, and implementation techniques of this defense, providing coaches with practical insights to improve their teams' defensive performance.
Overview of the Funnel Down Defense:
Concept:
The Funnel Down Defense aims to keep the ball on the sides of the court, referred to as the "gutters," and prevent teams from reversing the ball. This strategy disrupts offensive flow and limits scoring opportunities.
Volleyball Court Analogy:
Steve uses the dimensions of a volleyball court to illustrate the concept. A basketball court is 50 feet wide, while a volleyball court is roughly 30 feet wide, leaving 10 feet on either side as the gutters. The goal is to keep the ball in these gutter areas and away from the middle.
Key Components:
Pinning:
Pinning involves keeping the ball on the side of the court, outside the volleyball lines. This limits the opponent's ability to execute their offense effectively.
Funneling:
Funneling directs the ball handler towards the short corner or specific areas where the defense can trap or apply pressure. The aim is to force mid-range shots or difficult attempts behind the backboard.
Trapping:
Trapping occurs in designated areas, such as the short corner, to create turnovers and disrupt the opponent’s rhythm. The defense seeks to funnel the ball into these traps to capitalize on defensive opportunities.
Benefits of the Funnel Down Defense:
Disruption:
By confining the ball to the gutters and preventing ball reversals, the Funnel Down Defense disrupts the opponent's offensive strategies and reduces their scoring options.
Turnover Generation:
The system is designed to create turnovers through strategic traps and pressure in confined areas of the court.
Adaptability:
The defense can be adjusted based on the opponent's strengths, such as tweaking the approach when facing right-handed players or specific offensive threats.
Implementation Techniques:
Terminology:
Steve introduces specific terms used in the Funnel Down Defense, such as "pin," "funnel," and "trap," which are essential for understanding and executing the system.
Practice Drills:
Coaches are encouraged to incorporate drills that emphasize these defensive concepts, teaching players to consistently apply pressure and force the ball into desired areas.
Realistic Adjustments:
While the goal is to keep the ball on the left side, Steve acknowledges that opponents will occasionally succeed in moving the ball to the right. The defense adjusts accordingly, applying the same principles to maintain control.
Advanced Strategies:
Continuous Improvement:
Steve plans to delve deeper into the Funnel Down Defense over the next few months, sharing coaching calls and detailed strategies to help coaches refine their implementation of the system.
Community Engagement:
Listeners are invited to engage with Steve through email (steve@teachhoops.com) for further questions and personalized advice on implementing the Funnel Down Defense.
Conclusion:
The episode concludes with a recap of the Funnel Down Defense’s core principles and its effectiveness in disrupting opponents' offenses. Steve emphasizes the importance of strategic pinning, funneling, and trapping to create a robust defensive system. He encourages coaches to explore additional resources on TeachHoops.com for continuous development and invites them to stay tuned for more in-depth discussions on this defensive strategy.

| Ep 1379 The Future of you Program | 02 juin 2026 | 00:08:47 | |
www.teachhoops.com
Episode Title: Can Team Camp Reveal Your 7th, 8th, and 9th Players?
Team camp isn’t for finding your best player. You already know who your top 2–3 are. Team camp is where you discover your bench mob—the 7th, 8th, and 9th players who decide close games, survive foul trouble, and change momentum with effort and trust plays.
This episode gives coaches a simple evaluation system to identify depth without guessing—and without getting fooled by one hot shooting game.
You’re not grading talent at camp.
You’re grading trust.
Ask this on every possession:Can I trust this kid to win a possession?
Not score. Win.
Sprint back and match up in transition
Talk early on defense (screens, help, matchups)
Be in the right help spot
Block out with contact
Make the simple pass
Reset fast after a mistake (no sulking, no blaming)
Toughness under real conditions:
Second game of the day
Early morning tip
Game after a loss
Possession after a turnover
Response after missed shots or bad calls
“Losers limp. Winners respond.”
Bench mob players respond fast.
To build depth, give players identity and evaluate them with clarity:
1) The Stopper
Can guard a scorer without fouling
Changes matchups even without scoring
2) The Rebounder
Hits first, pursues second, finishes the play
Creates extra possessions
3) The Connector
Makes teammates better
Talks, moves the ball, cuts, keeps pace flowing
“Lineup glue”
Use this with assistants during camp games. Each item = a “win”:
Sprint back and match up
Early talk on screens
Great box out
Deflection
Charge attempt
Paint-touch pass
Great cut
Extra pass leading to a shot
Next-play response after a mistake (the biggest one)
Camp is a blur. You will forget.
After each game, write down:
Two players who earned trust
Two players who lost trust
By the end of camp, patterns show up.
Now you’re making decisions based on habits—not one good shooting stretch.
Team camp is NOT for installing your whole playbook
It’s for discovering who you can trust when it matters
Depth is built through clear roles and measurable impact
Your bench should compete for “winning plays,” not shots
The best teams aren’t perfect—they have guys 7–9 who change games
