"The Holy Donut Journey" With Jeff Buckwalter22 Jun 202501:38:48

The story of The Holy Donut is a story of determination, creativity, and the power of a family coming together to build a business and a brand together. It all started with our founder, Leigh Kellis, a single mother and a veteran in the serving and bartending scene in Portland, who turned her apartment kitchen into a donut laboratory armed with nothing but passion, love and a counter-top fryer. She was fueled by a desire to offer a unique and wholesome donut that she felt comfortable sharing with her daughter. The story is fueled by a family united by a common mission and dream. Her father, Allan, offered unwavering support, from peeling potatoes to making deliveries asking for nothing in return in the early wholesale days. The opening of the  first Holy Donut in Portland in 2012 was a collective effort, with her mother, Cynthia, investing her savings, and her sister, Elizabeth, leaving her job to join the venture only working for tips in the early days. The business’s growth was realized and propelled by Jeff Buckwalter, Leigh’s brother-in-law, who quit his job and came on board as the CEO in 2013 and brought the business acumen, structure and vision for sustainable growth of the brand. The Holy Donut became a true family affair, involving even the youngest members: Avery, Riley, Kady and Griffin in its operation creating lifelong memories.

Fast forward 13 years and the company now has 5 retail locations and has successfully launched a nationwide shipping program and a rapidly growing wholesale channel with distribution from the county to New York.  They recently launched with Hannaford Supermarkets and have plans to continue to grow their brand beyond New England.

This story is more than just about donuts; it’s a testament to the power of a dream, a family’s determination, the village that materialized to help them grow, and the community that embraced them along their journey.   The 207 collective is available on all major listening platforms.  Recorded in Alfred Maine.

Steve Becker "Becker's Barbecue"23 Dec 202501:26:23

Steve Becker began his career 23 years ago at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a crane mechanic, a trade that taught him precision, discipline, and the value of hard work. Fifteen years ago, what started as a simple hobby—cooking barbecue—quickly became a passion. Thirteen years ago, Steve took that passion a step further by building his own smoker, laying the foundation for what would become much more than just backyard cooking.
Influenced early on by his Grandma Jo, Steve believes food has a unique power to bring people together. That belief still drives everything he does. For Steve, barbecue isn’t just about flavor—it’s about dedication, patience, and putting real heart into the craft.
Most recently, Steve teamed up with fabricator Scott Brouillard to build a rat-rod–themed food truck from an old Penske truck—despite neither of them having ever set foot inside a food truck before. The entire build process is documented on the Flipping Customized YouTube channel, showcasing their creativity, problem-solving, and relentless work ethic.
Steve Becker’s journey blends blue-collar grit, family tradition, and a deep passion for barbecue—proof that when skill and heart come together, something special is built.

Jim Doiron's parents acquired the Sanford Dairy Queen in 1980, when he was seven years old, and soon introduced the brazier line. Following his father's passing in 1990, Jim graduated in 1991 and joined forces with his mother to sustain the business. His mother remains an essential part of the operation, and Jim also recognizes Kathy Giguere, a talented cake decorator who has been with Derry Queen since her high school days. Due to escalating overhead costs and competition from the nearby McDonald's, they eliminated the brazier line in 2009. In 2015, Jim and his mother invested in renovations, including the addition of a drive-thru. Ten years later, they revamped the exterior with a large red spoon and updated color scheme. Jim expresses his gratitude to his employees, past, present, and future, as well as the loyal customers who support the business through walk-in orders, drive-thru, and DoorDash.
