Everyone at 2000 AD is still reeling from the news that Carlos Ezquerra has passed away. In this episode of the 2000 AD podcast, we talk to some of the people who knew and worked with him, and just a few of the other 2000 AD creators who were influenced by his incredible work over half a century - Garth Ennis, Matt Smith, Dave Gibbons, Kelvin Gosnell, Jock, Rob Williams, David Baillie, PJ Holden, Simon Fraser and Al Ewing. One of the all-time greatest comic book artists, the Spanish illustrator was one of the titans of 2000 AD. Originally from Zaragoza, Carlos began his career in Barcelona, drawing westerns and war stories for Spanish publishers. Breaking into the UK market on romance titles like Valentine and Mirabelle, he was head-hunted for the new IPC title Battle Picture Weekly where he drew Rat Pack, Major Eazy and El Mestizo. In 1976, he was asked to create a new character, the future lawman Judge Dredd, for a new weekly science fiction comic called 2000 AD. Thanks to his enduring partnership with John Wagner, Dredd was to become one of the world’s most recognisable comic book characters, with Carlos there to apply his inimitable style to some of the biggest stories in the strip’s history, such as The Apocalypse War, Necropolis and Origins. Thanks to Dredd as well as his co-creation of Strontium Dog, created for Starlord in 1978, his adaptation for 2000 AD of Harry Harrison’s Stainless Steel Rat, and thousands upon thousands of comic book pages, Carlos was lauded by readers and creators alike. Modest and unassuming, Carlos was nonetheless a legend whose contribution to the global comic book industry cannot be understated. His distinctive style - characterised by breathtakingly dynamic, high-energy storytelling and the distinctive ridged thick inking that outlined so many key moments - was instantly recognisable. Despite a brush with lung cancer in 2010, he continued to work and, although the cancer returned this year it was believed he was recovering well. His sudden death is a profound loss not just to 2000 AD but to the comic book medium. An artist who should need no introduction, Arthur Ranson was a stalwart of British comics from the 1970s with work on licensed properties for Look-in before moving to 2000 AD in the 1980s and quickly establishing himself as one of the seminal artists on Judge Anderson's solo adventures. His meticulously detailed style brought atmosphere and depth to his work, whether it was adding verve to adaptations of TV classics such as Sapphire & Steel or rendering the gritty streets of Mega-City One in Judge Dredd. In the 1990s, he co-created the noir crime thriller Button Man with John Wagner and the fantastical Mazeworld with Alan Grant, while drawing some of the most pivotal and moving moments in Judge Anderson's life. He has since retired, but collections of his work have brought on re-evaluations of his work for new generations of comics fans, drawn to the rich detail and extraordinary influences of his work. In the mid-1970s, a sub-editor at British comics publisher IPC read a newspaper article about a forthcoming movie called 'Star Wars'. Spotting a potential gap in the market and encouraged by fellow IPC employee Pat Mills, he penned a memo to management suggesting that science-fiction would be the Next Big Thing. Chris Weston (Judge Dredd, Indigo Prime) and Jock (Judge Dredd, Lenny Zero) are two of 2000 AD's most popular art droids and worked for nine months on costumes and characters for the latest installment of Star Wars, from the caretaker Lanai on Ahch-To to Leia's cloak on Crait, from the police on Canto Bight to the Resistance's pilot helmets. From "gifted child" to million-selling comic artist, Liam Sharp's artistic journey has been one of high hopes and hard work. Beginning his career as an apprentice of legendary The Rise & Fall of The Trigan Empire artist Don Lawrence, Sharp went on to debut at 2000 AD while still in his teens and co-create the precocious homocidal teenager PJ Maybe, before his work saw him propelled to stardom in the comics boom of the 1990s. One of 2000 AD's creators who should need no introduction, Cam Kennedy has been the artist on some of the most seminal stories in the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, including Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, and The VCs. A huge influence on generations of comic book artists, Kennedy's work merged the gritty style of war comics with a knack for design that gave his work a dynamic - although grounded - simplicity. Now a resident of Orkney, Kennedy has struggled with his eyesight and has sadly had to give up professional work. In this interview, he talks about his career and the evolving challenges of being a comic book artist.
