Episode #88: Journey to the End of the East Bay14 Mar 202401:36:51

The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast

Presented by Foxy Digitalis.

Well, that’s about it for us. Our final episode, at least for now. We talk about Journey to the End of the East Bay, we do the dumb fanboy ranking the albums thing, we go over key takeaways from doing two years of the pod and, most importantly, we tell you about what is next for us. If you enjoy listening to Sam and Brad talk about random crap, we will be debuting a live stream show called Endless Happiness: A Life Show in a few weeks. Come hang out and chat with us about whatever we decide to talk about that week. Same honest feeling and radical acceptance just without the focus on Rancid. Also make sure to check out Brad’s incredible new podcast Songs of Our Lives out wherever you get podcasts. And finally yes we reserve the right to come back to this feed whenever there is important or dumb Rancid news we want to talk about. So don’t unsubscribe! Doom Regulator is still out there! Breakups! New side projects etc… until then, this Sam and Brad signing off for new. Until next time, we'll see you guys later...

The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast

Presented by Foxy Digitalis.

Look, we're trying - we really are, but as with most things with "Honor," the operative word is flat. So, we talk a little about the song, but then just get into a bit of a mental health check with the world falling apart in so many ways. Lots of talk about the situation at Bandcamp and more.

Episode #76: Not To Regret19 Oct 202300:25:52

The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast

Presented by Foxy Digitalis.

Back with a ripper from the year 2000. A definitive new look for the band at the time taking the intensity of early records and mixing it with a downhome twang all while gargling razorblades. Matt and Brett are in hero mode throughout. As always doing episodes on Rancid 2000 are like making fun of a clown “Good Song is Good!”.

Episode #75: Hyena05 Oct 202300:29:50

The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast

Presented by Foxy Digitalis. After a rough one last week, the guys needed a reset so they get into an early career highlight, “Hyena.” While Tim’s lyrical subject matter and approach feel pretty limited on Rancid 93, it doesn’t stop this song from being a real ripper.

Episode #74: Transplants "Diamonds & Guns"28 Sep 202300:44:45

The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast

Presented by Foxy Digitalis.

Sam subjects Brad to finally digging into the mess that is the first Transplants album. We dig into the utter disappointment that was the idea of that album pre-and post-release due to the insanely awful lyrical content and the complete lack of skill, talent and self awareness that is Skinhead Rob Ashton. Despite all the pain of this album it is a very important step along the progress that is Tim’s musical journey and really can’t be ignored so buckle up because I am sure this isn’t that last you have heard from these idiots.

Episode 64: Lady Liberty20 Jul 202300:31:53
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. Diving into the always reliable Life Won’t Wait for the first and possibly best true “rockabilly” song in their catalog. A Clash tribute on their most Clash like album and a walk through 80’s cold war politics to make sure that point was not missed. We reflect on our feelings about Rancid’s long love affair with Rockabilly, psychobilly and various points in-between. As we always say, if it’s your jam don’t let us yuck your yum, tell us about what we are missing. Did you like when psycho became the third leg of the stool for Hellcat records? Did you spend your youth in suburban hot topics and enjoy the Horrorpops, Tiger Army and (tangentially) AFI? We want to hear about it. Do you think this is the best rockabilly song in the catalog? Episode 60: The Brothels22 Jun 202300:56:24
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. Has a compilation ever meant more than the sum of it’s parts to you? For Sam the first Give em the Boot comp is a seminal work of why DIY label matter. Sure there are “cooler” comps out there but this is where the idea of a group of folks coming together to unite around a label and making something new and interesting started. The iconic lead off track was a unreleased glam punk jam from Rancid and the reason many people picked up the ska and street punk compilation. What does it sound like all these years later? Episode #85: Radio Havana & Black Derby Jacket22 Feb 202400:45:23

The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast

Presented by Foxy Digitalis.

Every time we talk about Rancid 5/Rancid 2000, our love for this record is renewed. It really is among their best work, and is such a unique entry in their catalog. We couldn't get out of here without tackling two of the big ones - figuratively, and in the case of "Radio Havana," literally. One of the longest songs on 2000, it wouldn't feel out of place on either AOCTW or LWW, but somehow it slots in perfectly here. "Black Derby Jacket" is one of Matt's big moments - on 2000 and just generally - and lyrically, it really lands. What a fucking record!

Episode #84: Corazon de Oro & Crane Fist15 Feb 202400:54:47

The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast

Presented by Foxy Digitalis.

This week we clean up important touchstones from 1998’s Life Won’t Wait. Our perennial runner up to possible best album from Rancid is certainly one of the most interesting and most listenable albums in the catalog. Though it is not without it’s major issues, including introducing the home listener to Tim Armstrong’s romantic obsession around this time - Brody Dalle. Thus cursing any listener who found the song endearing at the time. Plus, was Crane Fist a painful tease to a sliding doors world where there was a RZA crossover instead of whatever Transplants was?

Episode 51: Honor is All We Know Medley ("Collision Course," "Honor Is All We Know," & "Evil's My Friend")20 Apr 202300:52:43
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. Last week during our mailbag episode our new friend Drew challenged us to check out the promo video for Honor is All We Know, which features a medley of songs from the album. He claimed if we tried it with open hearts and minds, it would be the best chance we would have of finding some love for the album, which so far has been at the absolute bottom of our lists. Did the songs win us over? Are we new men? Can we explain why we think Honor is soulless and Troublemaker is wonderful? Or are we all kind of full of shit? The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. Adina kicks off the first full album from Rancid with a vibraslap, hey hey gang vocals, and the immortal cry of “Let’s goooooo!”. After that, things get muddy. What exactly is the moral stance of this song? Who is Adina? It sure feels like a rough time was had in some sort of vicious cycle. What we can say is every time we return to Rancid '93 it reminds us how much of an underrated classic it is. The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. Rancid broke up their nuclear blast album 2000 self-titled album with an anthemic ode to the people of Rwanda. We dive in to talk about what it means when (white) American artists bring attention to a people or issue via an anodyne positive and encouraging message. Where does this fall on the problematic scale? What was the intent vs effect? Also how does this one fit into the breakneck tracklist that is Rancid 2000. Episode 45: Wrongful Suspicion09 Mar 202300:38:49
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. When Sam picked Wrongful Suspicion last week his view of the song was very different than when we recorded it. Immediately after that same exact day we picked the song the wonderful 108th episode of In Defense of Ska podcast with Vic Ruggiero was released. A big focus was a deep dive into Wrongful Suspicion and the Slackers version of this song “Statehouse”, completely recontextualizing a song we already dug but were a bit confused by. This episode immediately became about both versions of the song and a love fest for Vic and all he brought to this era Rancid. While our episode is fine, the In Defense of Ska episode was so entertaining and full of detailed accounts of this time and just great stories from Vic, go listen to it immediately! Episode 44: Bovver Rock and Roll02 Mar 202300:45:36
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. The guys decide to dig into Trouble Maker yet again to figure out why this album lands for them differently than anything else post-2000. Not sure they find any answers, but everyone is happy that Lars finally got to live his dream of being in KISS. Episode #83: The Silencers "Policeman"08 Feb 202400:56:53

The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast

Presented by Foxy Digitalis.

As we wind our way through to the end of the pod, we take a left turn into the obscure gem that is The Silencers “Policeman”. A strange alternate universe look at what if Vic Ruggiero and Tim Armstrong had a full time band together. A great excuse to wax lyrical on Vic one more time, and discuss the weird perfection that was the first Give ‘em the Boot compilation.

Episode 43: International Cover-Up23 Feb 202300:33:44
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. A return to Let’s Go, International Cover-Up is a classic early Rancid burner, vaguely political, carried by catchy gang vocals, and over in a blink of an eye. The song brings up our most controversial take yet: Objectively and stripped of nostalgia, Let's Go is a fine Rancid album and not a great one. Those that hold it and AOCTW up as the two classic albums are deep in their rosy red-tinted glasses. Episode 42: Maxwell Murder16 Feb 202300:36:50
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. The guys dig into the most meme-able of Rancid songs, which Sam rightfully points out is a classic. But does the song exist for any reason other than a vehicle for Matt to rip a bass solo? And when will Rancid finally release their musique concrète record? Episode 41: Bad Religion - Television09 Feb 202300:40:48
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. Television! Television! Television! Television! Television! Television! Television! Television! What do you do when you cross Bad Religion’s moody anthemic surf punk and Tim Armstrong’s vocals? Seems like you get a song that is more Rancid than it is Bad Religion. Not to mention the very surprising co-songwriter Johnette Napolitano who it turns out is not actually Linda Perry…in case anybody was confused. Television! Television! Television! Television! Episode 40: Malfunction02 Feb 202300:36:30
The 11th Hour: A Rancid Podcast Presented by Foxy Digitalis. The guys finally break the seal on “...Honor Is All We Know” with mixed feelings (to put it mildly). They talk a lot about why “Honor” doesn’t land for them but “Trouble Maker” does. Not sure there’s a clear answer, there, though.
