22. How to Connect to Self with Salisha Aya08 Jul 202201:09:58

In today’s episode we have our first return guest, Salisha Aya!  The first time we interviewed her, she created a deep impact with her story of childhood abuse transformed into deep healing and service.  Salisha wowed us again in this episode with her depth of sharing, the wisdom that flows through her, and advice to women on how to come home to self.

Next week Kate and Betsy begin teaching TEND HER 2.0 – a 4 week online program for women teaching how to come home to our self, our heart, our body, our intuition, and then how to connect from this deeper place to others.  For more info about joining, visit www.dryogamomma.com/tend-her-2

So we interviewed Salisha about what her reclamation of self has looked like.

In this episode, Salisha talks about:

  • How distanced she was from her body, and how yoga was her first pathway in to more presence.  She also discusses alcoholism and how this was a deep disconnect from her body.
  • The importance of listening to the heart, and how she believes vulnerability is the way her heart begin to melt the walls she had built up around it.  She speaks to the power of women in group in vulnerability and how we all have essentially the same stories, fears, shames, and challenges.
  • How she was always intuitive, but that her intuitive instincts would often get confused with her history of trauma, so she could never be sure if her intuition was right or not.  She shares the formula of how she works with intuition now: get the intuitive hit, ACT ON IT, and see if you are right.
  • The power of connection and how we can begin to deduce whether our connections with others are life giving or toxic.

Salisha talks about yoga and bouncing as 2 things that really help us reclaim our body.

21. Living In the Threshold01 Jul 202200:34:19
Today’s episode all about dualities.  We discuss a recent poem by Cleo Wade that illustrates this idea so beautifully. “Here’s the thing – you are allowed to be a ball of contradictions.  Everything you are and everything you like does not have to make sense in relation to each other.  Life is less about being right, correct, and validated and more about being free, joyful, and curious in a world that asks you to see it in black and white – Do yourself the divine favor of experiencing it in color. “  – Cleo Wade We discuss the fear of holding all of it and the tension of opposites.  When we are able to live in the threshold we have a fuller life.  As mothers we talk about instilling in our children there is no bad emotion or experience.  It is all part of life and gives us the opportunity to grow and expand. We share stories of Kate’s grandmother Bernie and our friend Monica who embody this idea live in this space.  Being with people who are unafraid of themselves is a beautiful experience. 20. Balancing Our Personal Masculine & Feminine Energies24 Jun 202200:44:56
In today’s episode, we talk about the divine feminine and masculine energies and finding a balance between them.  Several themes emerged from this discussion:
  • The difficulty in calling these energies masculine and feminine, as it automatically attaches them to gender which is not actually the case.  Other ways to describe these energies include light/dark, night/day, sun/moon, receptive/active, yin/yang.  In the end, we continue to use the descriptors masculine and feminine as this is how they are often described, even though we acknowledge the limitations of this.
  • The feminine energy is being receptive, nurturing, gentle, intuitive, wild and natural.
  • The masculine is about being focused, goal oriented, disciplined, productive and active.  It is critical that we find a balance between these energies if we want to experience a greater sense of harmony and fulfillment.
  • We talk about our individual healing experiences in the past few months.  For Kate, she has been healing her inner feminine, and for Betsy her work has been healing her inner masculine.
  • We discuss feminine leadership and how the patriarchy negatively impacts everyone, including men, and how important it is to hold space for men to be vulnerable and tap into their feminine energy.
Book – “Why Does Patriarchy Persist” by Carol Gilligan. Feminine vs Masculine Principle

19. From Iowa to Mt Everest: A Conversation with Jen Loeb17 Jun 202200:57:58
We talk with Jen Loeb, the only female Iowan who has climbed the 7 summits, including Mt. Everest.  In this conversation we talk about:
  • How growing up in Jessup, Iowa, as a “feral child” spending countless hours outdoors likely were foreshadowing of what adventures would come.
  • How unlikely it was for an Iowa girl to find the sport of climbing and how her first experience on Mt. Whitney during a volunteer experience started her down this path.
  • The importance of finding a Mountain Climbing Skill School which led to climb after climb, each getting progressively higher and more technical.
  • The life changing (and at the time shocking) comment a guide mentioned to her after climbing Mt Kilimanjaro that planted the seed that she was ready to climb Everest.
  • Her 3 year journey to Everest, including lots of self doubt, hearing from countless people that she was crazy, her training schedule, the financial commitment, and what it felt like to reach the Summit.
About Jen: Jen Loeb was born and raised in Iowa where she still resides today. She attended Wartburg College and earned a degree in biology, and then started focusing on volunteer work in 2006 with a trip to Ghana. Over the years Jen has made it a point to volunteer locally, nationally, and internationally. She has been involved in all different kinds of projects from building schools, houses, and hiking trails to cleaning up rivers, removing invasive plants, and even collecting data on endangered species. In 2010, Jen started mountain climbing. Since that time, she’s climbed peaks all over the world including Mt. Everest in 2016. In 2021 Jen completed her dream of climbing the “7 Summits” becoming the first and only woman from Iowa to climb the highest peak on every continent. 18. Radical Alliance with Raye Zaragoza10 Jun 202200:45:09
In this episode we have a deep and inspiring conversation with Raye Zaragoza, a 29 year old singer/songwriter who has always had the courage to forge her own path.  As a Japanese-American, Mexican, Indigenous woman, issues of belonging, skin color, and feeling as if she was on the outside flow through her music.  She explains that trusting in herself and the universe has brought her great success and allowed her to follow her passion. In our conversation we cover:
  • How Raye took an alternative route of not attending college despite straight A’s because she knew it wasn’t the right path for her, but that this challenged other people’s sense of reality and made them uncomfortable.
  • How Raye was able to bust through many culturally conditioned stories at such a young age, and actually find herself in her 20s versus having to wait until she was much older.  This young woman is a wise soul!
  • The importance of leaving behind politeness in order to get to a place of empowerment.
  • We play a clip of Raye’s song “Run with the Wolves” based on our favorite book “Women who Run with the Wolves” by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes. (We love that Raye has read this book already and even ripped off the front cover of her copy and has it framed!)
  • Raye talks about the importance of “radical alliance” – this term feels so timely and powerful.  We discuss how women can support one another in a pack, and how women can be good sisters in radical alliance.

About Raye:

Raye Zaragoza is a galvanizing presence, a self-assured artist making music to fight for, represent, and celebrate those left too long outside the spotlight. Known for tenacious feminist anthems and fearless protest folk, her stage presence teems with determined morale. As a Japanese-American, Mexican, Indigenous woman, Zaragoza spent much of her early life trying to assimilate with the world around her, to meet punishing standards of beauty synonymous with just one color of skin—and not her own. She has come a long way from that youthful pain, proclaiming “I am proud to be a multicultural brown woman with insecurities and a vibrant intersectional identity that I continue to grapple with. I hope young girls of today will know that the It Girl is whatever the hell they want to be.”

In the aftermath of her breakthrough single, “In The River,” Zaragoza released Fight For You, the protest-driven debut she says had her “finding my voice as a woman of color.” Upon releasing her first full-length, she discovered the beauty, significance, and necessity of her natural identity in a broader conversation; she was ready to celebrate what made her “different” and invigorate those of similar struggles to do the same. This rightful confidence radiates across Woman In Color, Zaragoza’s sophomore album out now on Rebel River Records, her own independent label. The album delivers powerful missives about embracing one’s own identity and discovering the power behind it, all across brisk, emotive, compelling folk melodies. Once deemed “one of the most politically relevant artists in her genre” by Paste Magazine, Raye Zaragoza now offers an intimate exploration of coming into her own, in a country where for many, simply existing is political. Through this album, Raye has written a collection of spirited canticles for herself, for womanhood, and for all the people who had to come together in such an event of divine coincidence that led to her existence. 17. Perspectives on Pain and Healing03 Jun 202200:36:57
In this week’s episode we talk honestly about the pain we all seem to be experiencing in some way.  Pain exists for both the individual and the collective after this difficult period in our history.  We share our thoughts on healing our nervous systems, and the weight of current issues like school shootings that have certainly added to that heaviness.   We talk about all the numbing activities and how we are so damn afraid to feel. Our world and our country are breaking open and there seems to be a collective rising. More and more people are on the path of awakening.  When one of us heals we actually heal the whole.  How do we do heal?  You don’t need to know where to start, you just need to make the internal commitment to yourself that you are ready to heal  your pain.  The universe will show you the path you need and all the wisdom we need is inside of us. 16. Wisdom from Marianne27 May 202201:03:06

We had the honor to do a live podcast event with Marianne Williamson at the James theatre with around 100 women in attendance.  Marianne came on with a bang and gave us all so much to digest and reflect upon. We were so grateful for this opportunity to be in the midst of one of the great thought leaders of our time.

Here are some of the highlights:

-The point of wildness is to bring the divine feminine into the world for transformational purposes. -Everyone’s life has a highly individualized curriculum. -If you see a sister in deep effort to share her wildness and her divinity – the best she is with the world, help her. -To be a real leader is to get into the system and disrupt it. And one of our favorites……. Pray in the morning, kick ass in the afternoon.

14. Rewilding and Motherhood06 May 202200:37:09

Today’s episode, in honor of Mother’s Day, we explore the topic of raising the next generation of wild women.   How do we embrace these young wild wolf pups to preserve their inherently wild nature?   We discuss three authors who write about parenting: Carl Jung, William Martin, and Dr. Shefali in “The Awakened Parent”.

In this episode we discuss three themes:

  • Your children are not your own.  They just came through you and they are on their own path. They have the right to express their own spirt.   Can you love without control?
  •  Live you own life.  “The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of its parents.”  When you do not live your life through your children, then they are free to find their own fulfillment.
  •  Do your own work and develop your own awareness.  Instead of fixing or controlling your children – work on yourself and get as clear as possible so you aren’t projecting your stuff onto them.

We talk about having brave and honest conversations with our daughters and helping them to live in the present moment.

13. You have Permission to Shine Your Light!29 Apr 202200:36:05

Today’s episode is based on Marianne Williamson’s beloved quote:  “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.”

  • If we speak up and tell our truth, we all fear we may lose love.  Marianne has also written, “Women are still emotional bondage as long as we have to make a choice between being heard and being loved”.
  • As women we must empower each other to speak up, overcome our imposter syndrome, and high five each other for our successes rather than shy away in jealousy or worst of all, say nothing at all.
  • Why we hang back and play small as women and how it is our light and our potential that scares us the most.
  • You are not too loud, too big or too opinionated!  There is enough space for all of us.  As we let our light shine, we send out reverberations and ripples that give other people the chance to do the same.
  • Meet Rachael Roewe of {made} community jewelry and our exciting collaboration of a line of gorgeous baubles for TEND HER WILD.

10. Caribbean Wild Woman Salisha Aya08 Apr 202201:06:29

Meet Salisha Aya, a sacred leader who empowers women in wellness retreats, women’s circles, and conscious ritual.  Today’s inspiring conversation is a journey with Salisha from her early years in an abusive, alcoholic household to finding worldly success until one day in her 30’s when she literally hit the brakes on her sports car and asked the big question, “Is this all there is?”

That question opened up a world of seeking and transformation as Salisha sought to figure out who she was and what she really wanted out of life (which wasn’t what she had been told by society/culture).  A journey to India, a divorce, and finding herself in the jungle of South America on a plant medicine journey all led her to deep healing and a deep reverence for herself and the power of what she calls the “divine sacred feminine”.

Salisha admits that she is wildly, blissfully happy despite all that she has endured in her life, a testament to the work she has done on herself and the work she so expertly guides other women toward in the retreats and trainings she leads.

9. Making Hard Decisions from The Heart01 Apr 202200:42:28
In this episode we explore something we all face: making big life changing decisions. Do I stay or do I go?  We talk about the importance of facing such decisions from the heart vs the head, and how it can be helpful to not talk to too many people about big decisions but rather to turn inward.  We cover Betsy’s favorite tool for listening to the body as a source of guidance in decision making.  We dive a bit deeper into the wild woman archetype and how when we disconnect from it we lose the inner fire to face change, but when we align with it we receive truth. Show notes: In today’s show we reference the work of Dr. Shefali Tsbary. She can be found at http://www.drshefali.com.

  • The power of yoga in Arielle’s life and the profound realization of what it was like to feel like herself after a practice.
  • How trauma can look “subtle” such as criticism, high expectations for performance, not seeing or hearing you, and how these experiences can have profound and damaging effects.
  • The importance of an attuned and steadfast “other” when working with trauma, whether this is a parent, a friend, a therapist, a healer.
  • Why nature and play are such key tools for helping us heal.

114. Use Your Voice21 Jun 202400:53:02

Today while we are taking some time off, we are re-releasing a favorite episode on women finding their voice. It is so important that we support one another to speak up and speak out. Our voices are needed at every table.

In this episode, we talk about the process of finding your voice.  Why is it hard for us to use our voice?  What are the stories around it and what do we do to speak up, be heard, feel heard and tell our truth?

Today we discuss:

-For much of history women have been silenced, ridiculed, punished, and even killed for their opinions and voices.

-The wound of the patriarchy and the many reasons we have learned to swallow our truth.

-The concept of gaslighting, which is the psychological manipulation that makes a person question their beliefs, sanity, and truths.

-Betsy and Kate share their own personal stories of finding their voices and the barriers they have encountered along the way. They acknowledge that it is a process and a constant work in progress, but they highlight the power and freedom that comes from using their voices to express their authentic selves.

-Throat problems can show up as the inability to speak up for yourself, swallowed anger, stifled creativity and a refusal to change.

-Ways to use our voices to be the radical change we need right now.

“I am constantly amazed at how courageous and radical speaking the truth is. The most activist thing you can do is just speak the truth and search for the truth, and just follow that trail.” —Melissa Ethridge

“Stand firmly with what you know in your heart of hearts.  Be exactly who you are unapologetically and with great passion and positivity, cultivate an inner courage to speak your truth and out of it action comes.” —Elizabeth Lesser

113. Margaret McCaffery: Wild At Heart (Part 2)14 Jun 202400:45:14

We are here again with special guest, Margaret McCaffery (it’s her birthday today!) for part two of this memorable interview.  Margaret shares her journey of motherhood and her passion as an advocate for cancer research and awareness.

Today we discuss:

  • Margaret’s law school experience that included a wedding on Independence Day, the cancer diagnosis of her father in law, and a new baby.
  • The honor of walking the stage to receive her law degree at Notre Dame with her first son in her arms and the village that supported her.
  • Her instinctual choice to focus on motherhood and spending time with her young sons, and how this was in line with the lessons she was taught by wise women in her life to honor herself wherever she focused her energy.
  • Navigating the highs and lows of each basketball season and the joys and challenges of having their sons on the team.
  • How allowing and supporting her children to make their own decisions about their lives was inspired by her grandmother.
  • Navigating their son Patrick’s cancer journey at 13, and the priorities and commitments that changed as the family confronted their new reality.
  • Patrick’s recovery and her commitment to raising funds and advocating for cancer awareness while helping to start the adolescent and young adult cancer program at the University of Iowa.
  • Her national recognition for her volunteer efforts with the National American Cancer Society and their work with the Coaches vs. Cancer program.

Bio:

Margaret McCaffrey is often referred to as University of Iowa Basketball coach Fran McCaffrey’s wife, but she is a legend in her own right.  Margaret was a stellar athlete and played basketball for Muffet McGraw at Notre Dame in the early 90’s. Post graduation, she intended to go to law school at the University of Minnesota, but was called by Coach McGraw to join the coaching staff at ND. It was there she met her now husband Fran McCaffrey, and began law school. Margaret is the mother to four children and has supported them in their interests and basketball careers.  In 2014, her son Patrick was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and she spent a year focused on caring for him.  Patrick is now cancer free but the McCaffreys have devoted their philanthropic efforts to fighting cancer. They helped start the adolescent and young adult Cancer program at the university of Iowa and have raised millions of dollars.  In 2022 she received the National American Cancer Society’s distinguished St. George award for being an outstanding volunteer.  She has served on the American Cancer Societies National Board of Directors since 2018, and along with Fran has championed the Coaches vs. Cancer program.

112. Margaret McCaffery: Wild at Heart – (Part 1)07 Jun 202400:39:06

We are here today with special guest, Margaret McCaffery. Margaret claims University of Iowa’s coach Fran McCaffery as her husband, but is a legend in her own right. We are happy to spend a little time with Margaret on her birthday and share part one of Margaret’s story.

Today we discuss:

  • Margaret’s birth story in the wilds of Zambia Africa 54 years ago, as her parents were teachers at a remote school during a time of government unrest in Africa.
  • The story of Joseph, a young local that was “so sorry” that Margaret’s parents had a girl. Joseph eventually took a shine to strong willed Margaret and took her with him everywhere he would go.
  • Margaret shares that her dad was a gardener, kept chickens and was locally famous for killing a spitting cobra with a pitchfork! The family’s move home to Minnesota where three younger sisters were born and were raised in a family of strong women.
  • Margaret’s grandmother was a pioneer and role model, involved in politics. At 18, Margaret voted for her grandmother for vice president, when she appeared on the Minnesota ballot with Eugene McCarthy.
  • Margaret shares the impact of having strong independent female role models abundant and accessible within the family and how autonomy granted by her parents allowed all four sisters to thrive in their own right.
  • How Margaret’s love of sports began early and she had the family’s support to be the only girl on the football team. Her unconventional decision to go to Notre Dame to play basketball that showed the strength of feminine independence of the women within the family.
  • The inspirational time Margaret spent in France, how it influenced her, and the lessons she learned that informed future life decisions and commitments.
  • How a phone call from Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw changed the course of Margaret’s life, and led to a move back to Notre Dame and to dating Fran McCaffery.
  • Join us next week for part two!

-Deb

Today we discuss:

  • Deb grew up on a farm, the oldest of 5 children, with plenty of adventures, responsibilities, and time with her father who taught her that anything was possible.
  • While Deb views her childhood as idyllic, she also experienced trauma which cemented her dedication to the well-being of children. She sees how focusing on the healing of others helped her own healing process.
  • Deb’s role as director of the Iowa Children’s museum which she saw as some of the favorite years of her life.
  • How upon retiring, it was only a few months until Deb and a colleague wanted to get back to playing with children and realized a need for supporting immigrant families and children.  They started Open Heartland, a non-profit that is 100% volunteer driven.
  • Deb shares her leadership style at Open Heartland which includes having immigrants as part of the board.  Although meetings take longer because 2 languages are spoken, it allows for those who are being served to actually have a voice.
  • Deb’s commitment to building relationships, and the ripple effects that happen when we empower others.

Bio:

Deb Dunkhase has dedicated herself to education within the state for over thirty years.  Her work has involved direct teaching and leadership roles working with parent and teacher groups to bridge the gap between formal and informal education.  Deb now teaches non-profit management at the University of Iowa.  In March of 2019 she co-founded Open Heartland, a non-profit organization that is 100% volunteer driven, currently serving over 400 local immigrant families as they navigate poverty, housing and the daily threat of deportation and separation from their children.

109. Revisiting Episode 67: Wild Like No One Else: An Interview in Costa Rica with Kimberly Arjes-Jaeger17 May 202400:49:15

This week we are re-releasing an old episode because we are all (including our guest Kimberly) on a yoga retreat in Costa Rica with 25 women. We love listening to this conversation again with one of our favorite truly wild woman!

And…we did record an episode this week on retreat with a MAN! We cannot wait to have you hear this in a few weeks – he has been on lots of podcasts and told us at the end this might have been his favorite podcast he’s ever done! So stay tuned!

Pura Vida!

Today, we talk to Kimberly Jaeger-Arjes while in Costa Rica on a yoga retreat.  We had no idea this interview was going to happen until the morning of recording.  Kimberly is  Betsy’s assistant and an integral part of her retreats.  Kate and Betsy were having their morning plan session with Kimberly, and Kimberly casually mentioned she never felt like she had ever left her wild spirit.

Kate and Betsy looked at each other, nodded, and simultaneously knew we needed to interview Kimberly to talk about this.  This interview is recorded in Betsy’s hotel room looking out at the jungle.  After the interview, a pack of wild monkeys swung through the trees that we got on video.

Kimberly is a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, gardener, and a lover in social & environmental activism. She leads a yoga influenced, playful and mindful movement practice and strives to create inclusive spaces for people to feel belonging. She is part of a Trauma Support Team with Challenge to Change, teaching a yoga practice at Heartland Yoga and at Coco’s Ranch.

You can follow Kimberly on instagram @kimiinthewoods Play & Move with Kimberly https://heartlandyoga.com/kimberly-jaeger-arjes/ https://cocosranch.com/iowa-goat-yoga https://www.challengetochangeinc.com/team/kimberly-jaeger-arjes

NOTE: If sexual assault and suicide triggers you, skip this episode.  If hearing about how to triumph over experiences like this, listen.

In today’s podcast we cover:

  • Kimberly’s unique mother who taught her early on about what it meant to be colorful and non-conforming.
  • How Kimberly always knew she was different, and at times wanted to fit in, but also knew the box wasn’t for her.
  • When Kimberly’s wild spirit was broken, and how she had to build it back over a period of years.
  • The importance of yoga and returning to her body that returned Kimberly to her wild nature.
  • How Kimberly strongly believes in the power of connections, social justice, and loving those who are also struggling with belonging.
  • Kimberly’s advice about how to live as a wild woman.

106. Meditation: The Royal Road to Self26 Apr 202400:42:45

In today’s episode we talk about meditation: why it’s helpful, the data that supports it, and why it is so darn hard to commit to it despite all the beneficial evidence for it.  We end with a guided meditation.

“Don’t find the best practice. Find one that you will actually do because they are all one.” – Neem Karoli Baba

Today we discuss:

  • The different types of meditation: prayer, guided, movement, yoga, mantra and mindfulness meditation.  The key is finding what works for you.
  • Betsy and Kate’s personal meditation experiences, including the “oh shit” meditation.
  • The myths of meditation and why it is so important to see how these might be blocking us from actually doing it.
  • Can a billion people meditate and is this a tipping point for more peace in the world?
  • The power of space in yourself, and how meditation helps us respond vs react to life.
  • Why it is impossible to get meditation wrong, and how every meditation you do is perfect.
  • Betsy gives a guided meditation to settle us into the present moment.

104. The Current Extremes of Light and Dark: Finding Our Way Back to Balance12 Apr 202400:39:40

In today’s episode we’ll be circling back to a topic we’ve previously touched on but want to approach again from a slightly different perspective.  In a world where contrasts are more and more obvious we discuss the necessary balance of our masculine and feminine energies

Today we discuss:

  • We are in a place of great extreme with both progress and setback.
  • The feminine energy is rising and we can see female empowerment in many arenas including sports (women’s basketball), music, the big screen, and political support in certain areas of the world for women’s rights.
  • But there seems to be equal setbacks for women around the world as well.
  • We explore the ancient concept of yin-yang which is a healthy balance of opposites that are equal.  Our world has placed the masculine energy above the feminine instead of allowing them to be on the same level which is the root of the imbalance we see everywhere.
  • Because there is so much hyper-masculinity in our current culture we are seeing hyper-femininity (i.e, rage and chaos) as an attempt to bring things into balance.
  • There is an axiom, as within so without, meaning that our responsibility is to balancing our inner masculine and feminine, which than impacts the outer world around us.
  • How we need more emotional intelligence and interconnectivity because we cannot solve our current world problems with the same masculine mindset that created them.

We’d love to hear from you:

In season two we’d love to hear from you, our community.  What are your thoughts on re-wilding and living your authentic life?  Please call or e-mail us with your story, questions, topics you’d like to explore, guests you’d like us to reach out to….

  • The fateful moment when Lyz found the box in the crawl space of her basement and truly saw the reality of her marriage.
  • The hard question: Is marriage the happy ending we’re told it is? and why women often carry the burden of blame in unhappy marriages.

In today’s episode we’ll be talking about the TEDx talk we were scheduled to give and that didn’t happen.

Today we discuss:

  • Our mutual excitement about the opportunity to give a TEDx talk, something we both had been wanting to do for some time
  • The challenge of presenting our re-wilding message in 12 minutes
  • The moment we separately realized this wasn’t working because of the essence of the wild woman archetype and it’s inherent fight against being put in a box that was 12 minutes long
  • How our bodies separately started having physical symptoms that were symbolic to both of us about the importance of surrender
  • The PRAYING MANTIS!
  • The actual TEDx Talk  – presented here on this WILD platform instead of the TEDx stage

101. Amanda Litman: Run for Something22 Mar 202400:51:34

Today we have an inspiring conversation with an expert in all things politics, Amanda Litman, co-founder and executive director of Run for Something, a group supporting young progressives running for office.

Today we discuss:

• Amanda’s early years and a defining moment in high school when she skipped class and went to a local college to hear Barack Obama speak, an event that would change the course of life.• Amanda’s choice to attend Northwestern in Chicago, her decision partially driven by her desire to be close to Obama’s office because of her hopes to someday work for him.

• Amanda’s work on Hilary Clinton’s campaign and how this work was so personal as the wanted to be apart of the first woman elected to the presidency.
• The shock she experienced the day Hilary lost and the lessons learned through the entire process, including the fire it created in her to help birth her business Run for Something.
• Why Amanda’s passion has turned to grassroots politics and helping solve the problem of finding an entry point into politics for young individuals new to politics.

• The hope Amanda has for the future as we shift into a younger more diverse electorate and the up and coming young people running for local offices.

100. The Upper Limit: Living in Your Full Potential15 Mar 202400:36:10

How much goodness am I willing to allow in my life? The universe had
been hinting that we should cover the topic of tapping into our full potential
and the things that could possibly be holding us back. Today we cover the
idea that we all have so much more in us than we imagine and have such a
deep capacity to feel good but because we have a limited tolerance for
feeling good we subconsciously sabotage those good feelings.
Today we discuss:
• Our inspirations from the book The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks
• The core question is “how much goodness am I willing to allow in my life
and what is getting in the way of the endless flow of abundance
available?”
• In The Big Leap there are four reasons discussed as to why we
sabotage ourselves
• Betsy discusses her experience with the first concept of “feeling
fundamentally flawed”
• How the lessons the subconscious carries can override the system and
tell us that we are fundamentally flawed
• Kate covers the second idea that breaking some kind of commitment
can create feelings of disloyalty and abandonment and why loyalty
became an important concept in her family
• Kate discusses the third point of why we might believe that more
success will bring a bigger burden to those around us
• The fourth idea of the crime of outshining others, of not showing your own genius,
of turning down the volume your own potential to avoid others feeling threatened
of showing distress in your full capacity to deflate the fullness is discussed by Betsy
• The ways in which we sabotage ourselves and how we can find
ourselves in the space of intuition of being in full potential, of being the
wild woman• The zone of genius and being in full potential is where we can fully use
our gifts
• Getting unstuck, expanding your edges, resetting your thermostat and
finding your upper limits

when she was in the woods with her grandmother.
• The evolution of Cate’s journey to Ayurvedic medicine and living in

98. Shake It Off: Facing the Criticism and Embracing Your Light01 Mar 202400:32:46

Today, we discuss haters, negativity, toxicity and how you can manage and work with it.
Facing the critics (or being one) will happen to all of us and whichever side of it you’re on we
want to have an open and honest conversation about it.
Today we discuss:
• The fear we each have of our internal light and that if we step into our full light we may
experience rejection.
• How when you shine bright, you will be a threat to the system, but in the words of Marianne
Williamson, “do it anyway”.
• The importance of boundaries, and prioritizing being authentic over being liked.
• Vowing to stay away from gossip, the short term bond that erodes trust in the long run.
• Returning to the light and staying in the light as our birthright (and accepting the reality that
there will be more responsibility and pushback)
“Our Deepest Fear” by Marianne Williamson:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful
beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves,
“Who am I to be gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a
child of God, your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightening about
shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you, we are all meant to shine as
children do, we were born to manifest the glory of God that’s within us, its not just in some of
us, it’s in every one of us and as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear our presence automatically
liberates others.”

“I was recently struggling with a boundary issue (yes, still) and I told my therapist I refuse to go
back to saccharine – that I like solid better. Before I really understood how impossible it is to
be compassionate to myself or others when people are taking advantage of me and when I’m
prioritizing being liked over being free, I was much sweeter but less authentic. Now I’m kinder
and less judgmental. But also firmer and more solid. Occasionally salty.” -Brene Brown in
“Atlas of the Heart”
