The UK's top 5 industries targeted by cyber criminals. The first one's a shock!20 Sep 202300:21:13
We're revealing the top 5 industries our 'delightful' cyber criminals love to target!

Hi, this is Mark Riddell, host of the Techcess podcast.

We talk about cyber criminals and cyber security on this podcast a lot. But in this episode we're actually going to list the industries most valuable to attack. If you work in any of them, you'll need to send the episode to your boss to listen to, asap!

As I recently spoke at a Cyber Lunch and Learn event, a question caught my attention: Do cybercriminals target all businesses equally? The answer is no, and in this episode, we'll explore the industries most vulnerable to cybercrime.

However, there's one industry on the list that may not apply to our listeners, yet it's still a shocker given the level of expertise and the value of the data within that industry!

But before we dig into the details, let's start with a quick introduction.

Despite warnings, cyber security still a massive threat to UK businesses!

Cybersecurity is a subject we've covered extensively on this podcast, and for good reason - it's the number one threat facing businesses today.

In the midst of a global digital transformation, where technology is advancing and businesses are moving towards the cloud, AI, blockchain, and Web 3.0, the possibilities seem limitless.

However, with these advancements come vulnerabilities, and cybercrime is on the rise year after year.

In fact, the pandemic and the shift to remote work have only accelerated cyberattacks.

In fact, the threat of cyber attacks has increased!

With employees working from home or public spaces, securing an IT estate has become more complex than ever. Unfortunately, cybersecurity remains an underinvested area for many businesses—most don't even have a dedicated cybersecurity budget.

This podcast aims to shed light on this critical issue and encourage businesses to take proactive measures.

Now, it's important to note that cyber criminals don't target only big tech giants and government agencies. Small and medium-sized businesses are equally at risk and often fall victim to cyberattacks.

The consequences are not limited to immediate financial loss but can also entail long-term damage to a company's brand, loss of customer trust, potential legal costs, and the high expenses associated with recovery.

the stats and facts

In this episode I'll be revealing the percentage of cyber attacks that target small businesses, and how many of those businesses that suffer an attack go out of business within six months.

The impact may not be immediate, but the implications on cash flow, sales, and customer loyalty can deal a devastating blow.

You'll definitely want to listen in as we get into the top five industries most affected by cybercrime in the UK.

Whether you're in these industries or not, this episode will provide valuable insights to help you safeguard your business.

What you'll learn from listening to this episode of Techcess
  • Does cybercrime affect all industries equally?
  • The significance of cyber security in all businesses.
  • The impact of global digital transformation and technological advancements.
  • The double-edged sword of technology, with limitless possibilities and vulnerabilities.
  • Why we're not mentioning industries least affected by cybercrime!
  • Some statistics around cyberattacks on small businesses.

Everything you need to know about password managers in your business02 Nov 202200:06:29
How are you managing your passwords within your business? mark from m3 Networks explains everything you need to know about passwords Are you using a password manager? If not, time to listen to this episode...

One of the most important issues when it comes to managing passwords in a business is creating and enforcing a password policy.

This policy should require employees to create strong passwords that are difficult to guess, and to change their passwords on a regular basis.

Additionally, the policy should prohibit employees from sharing their passwords with others.

But this is an incredibly difficult policy to project manage and keep check on.

Here's the link to the guide Mark mentions in the episode:

https://m3networks.co.uk/itguides/everything-you-need-to-know-about-password-managers-for-your-business/

Excerpt from episode (download transcript)

"Passwords are a necessary evil hated by everyone. And yes, that even includes us IT professionals. Now, everyone knows deep down that they should try harder with their passwords, but everything about them just seems difficult because great passwords are really difficult to think up, even harder to remember.

And it's highly frustrating when you get them wrong and you have to reset them. And this is what encourages people into sloppy habits, such as relying on weak passwords or reusing them across multiple logins."

Tech Topics covered in this episode:

  • The frustrations of remembering passwords
  • Passwords are being phased out
  • What can you do in the meantime?
  • The benefits of using a password manager
  • The risks of using a password manager
  • What Mark personally uses and why he uses it

Office 365: Are you overpaying? Do you even need your licenses?26 Oct 202200:06:45
When did you last check your office 365 licenses? mark from m3 Networks explains that you might be overpaying for licenses that you don't even need! If you're unsure, Mark is here to enlighten you on all things Office 365 licensing...

In case you didn't already know... (where have you been living?!)

Office 365 is a subscription-based office software suite from Microsoft.

It includes the applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access.

Obviously Word and Excel are very commonly known, as most people who use a computer have either worked in those applications at some point.

The suite is available for both personal and business use.

In addition to the standard office applications, Office 365 also includes features such as cloud storage and Skype for Business.

And the thing is, it’s not just large faceless corporate head offices that are making use of it.

Office 365 can be used by businesses of any, and all sizes.

And a lot of them have made one particular tool very famous recently.

After all, how many Teams calls have you been on since the pandemic?

Yep, another Office 365 favourite.

Another useful feature; businesses can use Office 365 to collaboratively work on documents, share calendars and messages, and hold online meetings.

The suite also includes a number of applications that can be used to create professional-looking documents, presentations and spreadsheets.

So, now we’ve established how useful this software is, let’s talk about whether or not you’re paying what you should be for it.

Listen to the episode to learn the answer.

Excerpt from episode (download transcript)

"As a Microsoft partner, we resell Office 365 licences to our customers. Our purchase price is less than the price Microsoft charges directly, so we're already making a margin. Now, granted, it's not much, certainly not enough to live on, which is why we don't sell Office 365 to a business unless they are an IT support customer first. Because if you factor in the set up time and then dealing with the support requests, we'd likely never make any money from it. And profit isn't a dirty word in business. Just like you, we have to make a profit from the things that we sell. So for us, it's very much a value add product."

Tech Topics covered in this episode:

  • Microsoft Office 365
  • How the software is sold
  • Why some companies charge more for Office 365
  • The various reasons you might be overpaying
  • Do you even need your licenses in the first place?

If you'd like Mark to offer you some free guidance on where you currently stand when it comes to Office 365 in your own business, book a free 30 minute chat with him now.

It's time to defend and invest!12 Oct 202200:09:28
Are you doing enough to defend and invest? mark from m3 Networks explains how you might be the dream business for cyber criminals to target! These cyber hackers are not kiddies playing around on computers anymore...

When it comes to running a business, it can be stressful enough just keeping things ticking over.

Throw in the constant threat of a cyber attack toppling things into the mix, and you've got a serious case of hair-greying operations.

Thankfully, this episode of Techcess is all about bringing the subject of defending your business from cyber crime back on the important to do list.

And not only that, but that you're investing the correct amounts of budget into the correct things.

Because when it comes to the risk of cost to your business from suffering a cyber attack, investment in prevention is always going to be cheaper.

Excerpt from episode (download transcript)

"Most people just aren't taking cybercrime seriously and are still the weakest link in the chain. And we estimate that up to 80% of cybercrime that we deal with has started because a human made a mistake. Well, then there's three key areas that you need to focus on for your defence. Strategy number one is having the right tools. And the trick here is to put in place a blend of cybersecurity measures that protect your business to a high level without overly inconvenience in your staff. Secondly, you want to have the right systems. Now, unfortunately, you can't rely upon security tools alone to protect the business. They have to be used in the right way, which means implementing and policing systems."

Excerpt from episode (download transcript)

"Here are some scary stats for you. Now, last year, 83% of organisations reported experienced phishing attacks and that was up 28% from 2020. And it's expected to that there will be additional 6 billion phishing attacks this year. A third of all phishing emails are opened. And that's quite an eyewatering statistic if you think about how many people in your business and how many people receive phishing attacks on a daily basis, that a third of them will actually be opened. And around 90% of data breaches occur as a result of phishing. So it's very lucrative for the cyber criminals out there. One in 99 emails is a phishing attack and 25% of these slip through the security fiters in your Microsoft inbox because no system is 100% effective, right? I've said that several times on the show. So there's always going to be a chance that a phishing attack email will get through to one or more of your users. 60% of successful phishing attacks actually result in lost data, so that's over half of them. And 52% result in a compromise of login credentials. So one of your users will be tricked into giving away their username and password for their email system or some other system because cybercriminals have set up a fake login page and tricked them into thinking it was the real login page and they've gone and given away their credentials."

"Where is the business storing its data? Now, this is quite often a question that people struggle with because they will say things like, "Yeah, we've got SharePoint and Office 365", or "we've got Dropbox", or "we've got a little network attached storage device". But the reality is, is that for most businesses, their data is really spread all over the place in many different areas.

And the worrying thing for business owners is that they don't actually know where all their data lives. And this is something that's really important because if you don't know where your data is, it becomes very difficult to back that up."

Ask Your IT Company This Question To Find Out Whether They Have Your Cyber Security Covered21 Sep 202200:13:40
Want to know a quick and easy way of figuring out your IT provider's competence? mark from m3 Networks explains a simple question you can ask them This one question alone can help you understand whether you're wasting IT budget.

There are so many IT service providers out there.

But not all of them are the same.

At m3 we obviously pride ourselves as being among the best and most professional out there, but on the other end of the scale you might be putting your business at risk if yours is totally incompetent.

Thankfully, the Techcess podcast is here to help you.

In this episode of Techcess, Mark Riddell from m3 Networks  shares with us one simple question you can ask your IT services provider.

The answer they give will help you establish whether or not they have your cyber security needs covered.

Spoiler alert! Don't read any further if you don't want the episode spoiled!

The question Mark suggests is around patching.

Listen to the episode to find out more about why this question is so crucial for the security of your business!

Excerpt from episode

"Most people do not know whether the IT companies are actually patching their systems on a regular basis. And quite often during those conversations they'll say, well, I'll go and ask them that question and hand in hand every single time so far when a potential customer has gone and asked their current IT provider if they have a patch management service in place to patch their operating systems on a weekly basis, it always comes back. As I know, or even worse, we had someone asked the IT company and they spoke to their account manager at the IT company and their account manager didn't even know if patch management was part of their service. And this is actually quite shocking."

How To Ensure Working From Home Is As Productive As The Office14 Sep 202200:14:47
Need to get your staff set up to work from home efficiently? mark from m3 Networks talks us through some of the best ways to ensure smooth WFH running Changing your business operations to working from home carries some risks

It might seem like a great idea at the time, but transferring your business operations to fully working from home carries risks.

Even working part time remotely can uncover some logistical issues you might not have immediately thought of.

In this episode of Techcess, Mark Riddell from m3 Networks  talks us through some of the things we might need to know if we're going to commit.

(Here's the desk that Mark references in the episode - https://thestagandbear.co.uk/

He says it's a recommendation for a Scottish-based, sustainable wood product that can be setup in minutes without needing any tools. Ideal for those working from the kitchen table.)

Here are some things you need to be considering to run an efficient and effective work from home strategy

In this episode we feel it's important you're educated on some of the implications and considerations of home-based business operations.

These are:

The removal of the commute, and the benefits of that

The efficiency options, such as monitors and their equipment

Their desk set up (will they be on a kitchen table?)

Logistics like phone and wi-fi considerations

Excerpt from episode

"The ideal setup, is that the setup that people are using at home mirrors what they have in the office.

So if someone is in the office with an all singing, all dancing PC with dual screens, or even triple screens nowadays, and they've got a nice ergonomic, fancy keyboard and a wireless mouse and all those kind of things....

That's great.

But if they're sitting at home on their kitchen table on an old laptop, that takes 20 minutes to boot up and has got a tiny little 14 inch screen... you know, the keyboard's all worn out... doesn't feel that great....

They're using the track pad instead of a nice fancy Logitech mouse or whatever.

Then of course, they're not gonna be as productive in that setup as they would be in the office because, let's face it, having dual monitors is, you know, one of the biggest productivity hacks to come into the tech space. I don't think anyone that's ever moved to dual monitors has ever said I'd love to go back to a single screen."

Cyber criminals have a reputation for constantly coming up with new ways to scam us into handing over login details or sensitive data.

And while you might think your team would spot an attempted attack, you could be surprised. We’ve seen a lot of intelligent people – including many business leaders – caught out over the years.

One of the latest scams is very retro… and that seems to be why people are falling for it.

Reduce your cyber insurance costs with these three things07 Sep 202200:13:42
Want to reduce your cyber insurance premiums? mark from m3 Networks talks us through how to keep the insurers happy and paying out! Did you know, your business is at risk of you losing everything and your insurer not paying out?

Your data may seem totally secure right now.

After all, you're signed up to Cyber Essentials.

I mean, that's what you're paying for, right?

Oh dear.

We might have some alarming news for you.

Your Cyber Essentials agreement may well not be enough to cover you in the event that something happens.

Need a quick brush up on what Cyber Essentials actually is?

Here's the relevant episode.

Three things you need to be aware of to be protected

In this episode we wanted you to be made fully aware of the three things you need to implement if you want to ensure you don't get bad news in the awful event that you need to make an insurance claim!

These are:

Being properly sorted out and paid up in Cyber Essentials.

Ensuring everyone has had necessary Security Awareness Training

Enabling Multi Factor Authentication - yes even you!

You would have probably already seen the link to the PDF above.

Here's a very quick sneak preview of that transcript of episode 57

"In this episode of Techcess I'm going to explain some of the ways that you can reduce the cost of your cyber insurance by having effective cybercurity protection in place.

Do you have a cyber insurance policy in place for your business or are you considering taking out a cyber insurance policy?

Most people won't know this, but cyber insurance premiums have gone up 92% in the last twelve months here in the UK.

And one of the problems with cyber insurance is that the insurers just don't have the tools to be able to detect the cybersecurity posture of your business.

So how do they know how good your cybersecurity is?

How do they see and measure the effectiveness of the cyber security measures that you have in place with your IT provider?

One of the things that the insurance industry does understand is that prevention is far better than the cure, because they don't want to pay out on claims.

In fact, the insurance industry hates claims. This is the thing that they try and actively avoid. Claims don't just cost them in paying money - actual cash - out.

They actually cost them massively in the admin and the effort required to process and manage and investigate claims. There's a few key things here that insurers will be looking out for and potentially asking you for. So when...

Do you know your phishing from your vishing or smishing?31 Aug 202200:09:56
What are the different types of hacking your business can be at risk from? mark from m3 Networks explains the 6 different phishing styles to be aware of in your business Do you know all about phishing vishing and smishing?

Phishing, vishing, smishing - all types of cyberattacks that you need to be aware of.

You probably already know all about phishing, and if you don't you can check out our other episodes of Techcess in which we ran you through what those are how they work.

Here you go!

https://www.techcesspodcast.com/how-to-spot-a-phishing-attack-top-tips-for-preventing-social-engineering-techcess/

https://www.techcesspodcast.com/what-is-business-email-compromise-bec-aka-phishing-how-scammers-trick-you-into-sending-them-money-and-how-you-can-prevent-it-techcess-technology-business-success/

But to summarise right now, in short someone sends you a fake email that looks like it's from a credible source in order to get you to click on a link or give away your personal information.

Let's draw on episode eight of Techcess for a quick catch up on phishing...

"So we're talking purely about being able to spot efficient emails and some of the ways that attackers will try and trick you into taking some action or doing whatever is they want you. So the first thing we are gonna talk about is who the email was from. Okay. So focusing on the, from header in your email, now, I just want to say, if you are checking your email on your phone, you quite often do not see the actual email address that the email comes from.

You'll just see the sender's name and that name can be made up to be anything, regardless of who the email address is from. Okay. You wanna make sure if you're on a mobile you'd normally if you click on the email name, it will expand and I'll actually show you the email address that email came from. So that's the first thing to check, and we know that I think it's about 70% of email is read on a mobile phone.

So it's quite a common thing. So make sure you are checking that you can see the phone address on your smartphone or tablet or one of them word device you're using to read your email. So the first thing. Do you recognize the sender's email address? And that seems quite an obvious one, but you know, make sure that the email address is someone that you would normally or regularly communicate with."

If you want you can click here to listen to more of that episode that goes more in depth on phishing:!

The dangers of phishing style attacks

In this episode we wanted you to be made fully aware of the growing dangers of cyberattacks as these hackers and their methods become more sophisticated.

All of these attacks are very common and can be very successful, so it's important to be aware of them and know how to protect yourself.

One of the best ways to protect yourself is to never click on links or respond to messages from sources that you don't trust.

You should also never give out your personal information unless you're sure that the source is legitimate.

And always best to make sure that your computer is protected with antivirus software and a firewall.

Small or medium sized business owner? Oh boy do cyber criminals love you!

Hi, this is Mark Riddell, host of the Techcess podcast.

"Now, I think it's a fair assumption to make that most people, if you ask them, they would say that they don't need to back up their Office 365 data.

They assume wrongly that Microsoft are backing up their data.

Now, there is a few things that Microsoft do to protect your data and they do give you some restore options up to a point.

However, one of the things that Microsoft actually say in their services agreement, it actually specifically says, and I'm quoting this, it says, "we recommend that you regularly back up your content and data that you store on the services, or store using third party apps and services".

So basically what Microsoft said is, look, we recommend that you take responsibility for this yourself.

And this is where the shared responsibility model comes in, which we're going to talk about just in a second.

What are the things that Microsoft actually do to protect your data?

Well, of course, they have redundancy and resiliency within...

Total Coverage Home Wi-Fi for Less Than £15017 Aug 202200:13:29
Excellent coverage across your home for less than £150? mark from m3 Networks explains how it can be done, and how he's done it What is this big wi-fi secret?

Wi-Fi is a technology that allows devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets to connect to the internet wirelessly.

It creates a network in your home or office using an access point, which is usually a router.

You can use Wi-Fi to connect to the internet anywhere in your home or office, as long as you're within range of the access point.

The problem with bigger homes and offices when it comes to your wi-fi coverage

If you have a big house or office, however, you might find that your Wi-Fi signal doesn't reach all corners.

This can be frustrating, especially if you're trying to use the internet in a part of the house or office that's far from the access point.

Fortunately, there are ways to improve your Wi-Fi coverage.

  1. Range extender (Good)

One option is to buy a range extender, which is a device that extends the reach of your Wi-Fi signal.

  1. Mesh network (Better)

Another option is to buy a mesh network, which is a system of multiple access points that work together to give you full coverage throughout your home or office.

This episode is all about the mesh network.

Mark explains what a mesh network is, how it works and why you should give it serious consideration for your home network.

Make sure you grab a pen and paper to take notes as Mark from m3 Networks talks us through the best kept secret in home wi-fi on this week's episode of the Techcess technology podcast.

"Welcome to today's episode of Techcess.

I'm Mark Riddell and I want to talk to you about Wi-Fi.

Now, yes, it's pretty boring, it's pretty dry, but the thing with Wi-Fi is it's great when it works, but when it doesn't work, it's a total pain. It's really frustrating when you have poor Wi-Fi. And a lot of the time people say to me, well, yeah, it's great, I get a Wi-Fi signal throughout my house. But there's a big difference between having a Wi-Fi signal and actually having a signal that's strong enough to actually get any work done. So just because you are connected to your Wi-Fi doesn't mean it's actually suitable to do the tasks that you're trying to do online, especially when it comes to things

"Welcome to the Techcess Podcast. Now, in today's episode, I'm going to be telling you everything that you need to know about SoGEA. Now, SoGEA or S.O.G.E.A, is a new technology that has come into the telecoms market. Now, I always promise here in the show to never talk about technical stuff or use a lot of acronyms and try and make everything that I talk about easily and accessible for everyone to understand.

What does SoGEA stand for?

So, first of all, what does SoGEA even stand for? Right? So let's get the acronym out of the way. So it stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access. And basically what it is, it's a new way of providing broadband access to homes and businesses. Now, typically in the past, you have ordered a line and then had broadband enabled on that line, so there would have been a normal voice phone line and then broadband would be added onto it. But of course, over the years, as more people have relied on VoIP and the use of mobiles even in business, the use of a landline number that's on that broadband circuit has faded away. So nowadays, so many people just have broadband just for internet access. Like, for example, here at home, we have a typical broadband line with fibre to the cabinet service, but we have a line with that service enabled on it, right? And there's a phone number, but we never use that phone number. In fact, we don't even...

Start planning to replace your Windows Server 2012 now!27 Jul 202200:11:59
Is it time you thought about replacing your windows server 2012?  mark from m3 Networks talks us through why we might need to give our trusty old reliable operating system some consideration!

If you're still using Windows Server 2012 (a lot of people are!) then you need to listen to this episode...

Windows Server 2012 has been around for a while (not quite ten years) and it's now becoming officially obsolete.

What's the difference between mainstream support and extended support from Microsoft?

Mark talks us through everything we need to know about the operating system's support options in this episode.

There are different aspects of it that will impact on different businesses, in different ways.

Regardless of the support agreement you have with Microsoft, Mark can talk you through your options. Scroll to find the link to book a chat.

What's going to happen to customer support once the extended support ends?

The burning question.

Will you be left hung out to dry, or will there be options available to you?

Well, Mark seems to think it's something you definitely need to be aware of.

"Well, the most important thing to remember about this is that once it's expired, the product will almost entirely be unprotected by Microsoft.

Microsoft will not release any security, updates and fixes, which means that your 2012 server is a sitting duck effectively."

During this episode of the Techcess technology podcast, Mark explains what we can expect to happen from Microsoft, following their end of life phasing of Windows Server 2012, including:

  • What this move will mean for most Windows Server 2012 users
  • What you can do if you currently still have Windows Server 2012
  • Mark's suggestion for how you can prepare for the changes coming to the Windows Server 2012 software

"Another misconception is that cybersecurity is an expense I can't afford. Fair enough. When you're running a business, of course you want to keep costs down. But the fact is, you stand to lose a lot more money if you take chances of your cybersecurity than if you just get the cover that your business needs in the first place. And when you consider the fact that noncompliance with things like GDPR can mean multi-million-pound fines and carries a thorough risk to your business or reputation, spending a bit of money and protecting your data is actually the smart thing to do.

IT security is an investment, not an unnecessary expense..."

Microsoft is retiring "Microsoft Azure Face AI"10 Jul 202200:01:18
Have you used Microsoft Azure face AI?  It's being retired. This bonus episode is to inform you of the upcoming retirement of Microsoft Azure, their face AI software!

Have you dabbled with Microsoft Azure's facial recognition software?

Facial recognition is an increasingly popular form of biometric authentication that can be embedded into apps with little machine learning expertise.

The features include facial detection and identification, as well as the ability to match against your private repository or identify people by photographing them - all in a seamless user experience without any noticeable lag time!

You could apply this technology for things like introducing new users (who will need proof) access control where identifying oneself means granted permission; authenticating regular customers without having their card scanned each time they come through doors.

In this Techcess Tech Update bonus podcast episode, Techcess Annie will explain how Microsoft is demonstrating true leadership by taking a big decision regarding this software!

"Let's crack on and talk about the top five insights for 2022.

Number 1 – no let up in pressure on security teams

So number one, there has been no let up in pressure on security teams.

Now, while the number of organisations that experienced a successful cyber attack actually dropped a touch from 86.2% in the previous survey last year to 85.3% in this one, the percentage victimised by six or more attacks increased to a new record of 40.7%.

And the number of respondents who think that is somewhat or very likely that the organisation will be successfully attacked in the coming year reached a new record of 76.1%.

So if you don't think that cyber attack is going to happen in your business, the data shows...

When it comes to recording business phone calls, there are a number of benefits that can be reaped

First and foremost, recording calls can help to better your company's interactions with customers.

This is because businesses can go back and listen to past conversations in order to see what went well and what could be improved.

This is just one of the many benefits we outline in episode 47 of Techcess.

If you ever find yourself frustrated with your customer service interactions, record them and replay the recording for staff members.

You'll be able to recognise areas where improvement could occur while also giving employees a chance at self-reflection so they know what's best when it comes to time for them to again take care of clients!

The seven benefits of recording business phone calls coming in to your small or medium sized company which are explained by Mark are these:

Better customer interactions Protecting you from liabilities Promoting best practices Anticipating your customer’s needs Delivery of the best possible customer journey Optimising your customer service workflows Ensuring regulatory compliance

"The benefits of recording business phone calls coming in to your small or medium sized business are huge!"

"In today's episode of Techess, I'm going to be talking about the benefits of recording business phone calls coming in to your small or medium sized business.

I think it's probably fair to say that when it comes to thinking about technology that can really help your business, call recording isn't one of the things that probably springs to mind. Why would it be? I mean, normally call recording is something that you hear when you phone into a call center - you know "all calls will be monitored and used for training purposes", et cetera, et cetera. So how can call recording benefit the average small, medium sized business out there? Well, keep listening on because I'm going to cover a number of areas where call recording can actually help benefit your business.

It's probably not too difficult to guess that the importance of call recording is all about improving your customer service. Because most businesses today understand that regardless of what it is that you do, the importance of excellent customer service is paramount. Because after all, keeping your customers happy is what sets you apart

The danger your business faces if you're under investing in tech!06 Sep 202300:18:33
Is your business investing in technology for operations? No? Oh dear. You need to listen!

You know me as Mark Riddell, host of the Techcess podcast.

But my job is being Managing Director of an IT support company named m3 Networks which is offering a range of managed services.

And a large part of that day job is fielding objections from people who think we're just scaremongering them into buying stuff.

But we don't need to use those kinds of underhand tactics.

We're a healthy, thriving business, with a healthy bottom line, and we work with customers that we know appreciate and understand the importance of IT and technology for their smooth operations.

But there are some business owners and IT decision makers we just can't help because they think we're just trying to sell them new stuff.

So this episode is for you if you're one of the staff members of such an organisation, and you're getting increasingly frustrated with your boss's apparent unwillingness to invest in keeping things running well.

The frustrations of failing tech

We all know the frustration of waiting for a sluggish computer to load while deadlines loom.

The effects of slow technology are even more pronounced when trying to finish tasks before the weekend or a holiday.

I recently stumbled across an article that made some concerning points about the growing number of employees contemplating quitting their jobs due to frustrations with their inadequate technology that impedes their work.

Workers can easily assess whether their employers prioritise technology by its impact on job performance and overall satisfaction.

And they're now voting with their feet.

What you'll learn from listening to this episode of Techcess
  • Workers are quitting jobs due to poor technology
  • There's a connection between employee satisfaction and investment in technology
  • The trend is businesses are investing in higher-end tech for younger workforce
  • Some actual statistics on workers leaving jobs due to inadequate technology
  • How to approach the boss for technology upgrades
  • Key points to consider when requesting an upgrade

overcoming technology roadblocks

While upgrading technology may seem like a substantial financial investment for a lot of small and medium sized businesses, it actually offers numerous long-term benefits.

Waiting for prices to decrease or ideal circumstances may lead to missed opportunities and potential loss of valuable and even vital staff members.

The point of this episode is to empower the employees who desire more efficient tools for their work so they can approach their employers, highlighting the key advantages an upgrade would bring.

You can listen to the episode to hear them in detail, but these include increased productivity and efficiency, potential cost savings, utilisation of newer and better software, improved morale and overall increased job satisfaction.

Not to mention the positive perceptions from clients!

Timestamped Summary:

00:00:00 Old, slow tech reduces workplace productivity. 00:04:10 Upgrade: Time-saving, efficient, and productivity boosting. 00:07:51 Poor customer service reflects poorly on business. 00:13:00 Upgrade tech to avoid inefficiencies and downtime. 00:15:32 Businesses benefit from investing in technology.

Episode transcript

You would have probably already seen the link to the PDF above.

Here's a very quick sneak preview of that transcript in which Mark offers advice to any businesses or individuals who are considering undertaking a cloud migration strategy.

Basically, there are two options.

"One is a shallow integration and this option means you'll move your entire onsite application to the cloud, making limited changes to the servers. You essentially lift your applications and systems as is and move them to the cloud as one. You may hear this being referred to as a lift and shift.

And option two is a deep cloud integration and with this option you modify your applications during the process of migration to take full advantage of the key cloud capabilities on offer. This may be relatively simple or may involve a more sophisticated modification.

Then you need to decide if a single or multicloud solution is best."
