Abby Zwerner Followed the Rules. The Rules Failed Her05 Nov 202500:52:14

Send a text

In this deeply personal and emotionally charged episode, Vanessa Jackson steps away from her usual format to examine the civil trial of Abby Zwerner, the first-grade teacher shot by a six-year-old student. This is not a story about politics—it’s a case study in ignored warnings, failed leadership, testing culture, and the trauma teachers are expected to survive in silence. If you’re an educator, this episode will feel painfully familiar. It’s a mirror held up to a broken system—and a call to stop accepting the unacceptable.

Teachers in Transition - Episode 173 - Do You Need Another Degree?27 Oct 202200:09:15

Send a text

Many teachers who talk with me while mulling their career options wonder if they need to return to school for another degree in a new area. Most of the time, my best advice isĀ  "no." You don't need a new university or college degree, even though you may need training in a new area.

If you decide you need training, do your "due diligence" and make sure you get trained with a reputable and/or accredited program.

Consider WHO you want to become in your next career and HOW you can best become who you wish to be professionally.

Teachers in Transition - Episode 172 - The Importance of Taking a Break in Your Routine for Stress Management20 Oct 202200:05:23

Send a text

I just got back from a vacation in Key West, Florida. I have had a visit to Key West on my bucket list for a long time, and given that I had a big birthday coming up last week, I wanted to celebrate it in Key West.

I learned about "island time" while there, and it occurred to me that "island time" was just what I needed. So I slowed down, relaxed, and came home feeling rested and rejuvenated.

Everyone needs to take "island time" occasionally to help manage their stress more effectively. When was the last time you took time away from your day-to-day routine? Think about it and plan a trip for yourself. Take time for yourself. Make your version of "island time" to help manage stress proactively.Ā

Teachers in Transition - Episode 159 - Staying Sane in Insane Times 14 Apr 202200:14:15

Send a text

This week's topic is stress and how to manage stress during some of the most stressful times teachers have ever experienced. In addition to what is going on in their classroom, teachers have to deal with angry parents who are banning books and censoring what teachers can and cannot say. And add to all that, a war is going on that keeps most of us riveted to the horrifying images that words cannot describe.

Kitty struggles to find anything new to say about stress management during the weeks that stress is the week's primary topic. But she has managed to find a new article to reference. It's not just for teachers. It is for anyone living in today's uncertain times.

The article that Kitty references is entitled "How to Stay Sane in an Insane World:Ā  Ten Tips for Reducing Stress During Troubled Times" by Valerie Carter, published on August 23, 2020, and updated on November 9, 2020. Teachers in Transition - Episode 154 - Hard and Soft Skills and Heeding Job Descriptions10 Mar 202200:15:10

Send a text

In this week's episode, Kitty distinguishes hard skills and soft skills and talks about what they are and how they are different. She also recommends that if you are undertaking a job search, start keeping an inventory of all your skills and distinguish between hard and soft skills for use in your resume. Hard skills are those things that you KNOW and can DO. Soft skills are the people skills that, frankly, many employers consider givens these days, but they are still essential and should not be forgotten.

Kitty also mentions that it's important to read job descriptions carefully to don't waste time applying for jobs you aren't qualified for. Don't skip over terms that you don't understand or think you could learn. Employers write those job descriptions because they look for people who have the skills and knowledge to do them. So do yourself a favor and don't waste time applying for jobs you aren't qualified for.

You may also want to take an inventory of the skills you have and make a list. Consider how you need to translate those skills into keywords that a hiring manager or recruiter will understand because rest assured, they won't bother to learn your language.

Play in the field of possibilities as you consider whether a career change is right for you. Maybe it isn't feasible for you to change careers. Then might it be possible for you to change schools, districts, or subject matter?

Listen to hear more about what Kitty has to offer this week on the subject of what is holding you back?

Teachers in Transition - Episode 146 - Interview with Brittany Rotskoff13 Jan 202200:15:05

Send a text

When I have a client who has been successful, I like to share that success. So, today I am excited to share the success of Brittany Rotskoff.

When I first met Brittany during the summer of 2021, she was a young stay-at-home mom who had quit her teaching job because of COVID. She was worried about going back to in-person instruction because she had a baby at home, and she did not want to risk her health or the health of her child.

A National Board Certified Teacher, Brittany was always clear that her career change should be part-time to start because she didn't want to leave her baby too much of the time. She was also very clear that she wanted to work in a museum or library. But she wasn't sure how to make that happen.

She took the Jumpstart Your Job Search Course that I offer, and with the help she gained from that program on how to best position herself for a new job search, and with the help of her sister who helped her with introductions, she has landed a new job as a Part-Time Visitor Experience Associate at the Kemper Art Museum which is associated with Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

The job is exactly what she was looking for. You can hear her talk about it and her job hunting experience in this episode of Teachers in Transition.

If you would like to learn more about Kitty's Jumpstart Your Job Search Program, check out this link on her website https://teachersintransition.com/jumpstart-your-job-search-2-0-program. Teachers in Transition - Episode 142- Why You Should be Job Hunting During the Holidays 16 Dec 202100:12:56

Send a text

It may sound counter-intuitive, but if you are job hunting, you should keep it up during the holidays rather than taking a break during these weeks leading up to Christmas and the New Year. If you want 2022 to be the year of a new job or a career change for yourself, you need to start preparing for it now. Kitty just shared that she saw that it is taking 29 weeks to make a career change these days which is a little over 7 months. You can't afford to waste any time.

Teachers in Transition - Episode 137 - Should You Reframe How You Think about Stress?11 Nov 202100:16:00

Teachers in Transition - Episode 136 - Don't Let Who You Are Define Who You Want to Become 04 Nov 202100:11:49

Send a text

Many teachers feel stuck when they start to think about leaving the classroom. They can't imagine what else they are "qualified" to do, and it makes them feel helpless and even hopeless.

In this week's episode, Kitty urges people to not let who are ARE define who they want to become. When transitioning from one career to another whether it is teaching or any other career, imagine what you would like to do instead and then plot out a way to help you get there.

What you do now does not need to limit you to one particular path in life. Listen to see what Kitty has to say about that.

There are three kinds of stress that you may experience at any point in time:Ā  acute anxiety, episodic stress, and chronic stress.

Since the pandemic arrived, it has occurred to me that we have all gone from experiencing the whole gamut. We've gone from acute stress to episodic stress to chronic stress all at once and we are all experiencing it collectively.

The point is that you should be aware of the different kinds of stress and their effects on your body, mind, and spirit.

This week's episode is about how we respond to stressful events and the harm that chronic stress can cause to the human body and mind.

To assess the level of your stress, take advantage of this free stress management tool:Ā  https://teachersintransition.com/stresstest.
